News:: Super Mario Odyssey breaks two million sales in three days

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that Super Mario Odyssey is a hit. Nintendo always has a bona fide hit on their hands with any Mario game, even the ones on Wii U. No, what is really awesome is that basically 33% of all Switch owners now own Mario's globetrotting adventure. Nintendo announced these figures during its six months financial results conference, which is filled with a lot of boring information about digital convergence and fiscal plans. Its enough to make you fall asleep.

To be entirely realistic, Nintendo hasn't actually confirmed two million sales, but it estimates that Mario has roughly moved around that amount. The plan is to continue the momentum into the holiday season and for the game to be seen, "as an evergreen title that has longevity in the market beyond the holiday season."

Either way, its amazing to see that Mario still has that kind of selling power after 30+ years. I know I've been in love with the character for basically my whole life and I'm sure there are plenty of other people with a similar story. Hopefully this massive push isn't contained to just this weekend.

News:: 'Dota 2' Dueling Fates update includes extensive gameplay changes

Dota 2 is set to receive some major gameplay changes, according to Valve's newly released Dueling Fates patch notes. The update will arrive on 1st November, bringing with it the new characters teased at Valve's International esports tournament in August. They now have names: Donté Panlin, the Pangolier, is a swashbuckling melee hero with the ability to fully negate armor, while Dark Willow Mireska Sunbreeze is a ranged fairy with magical powers that can stun and inflict fear.

News:: Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is coming back on PC

2003's action-adventure title Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is about to pop up on PC, Mac, and Linux by way of THQ Nordic. There's quite a lot going on with these new versions -- more than you might expect from years-later ports of a game most people aren't likely to remember all that well.

Here's what to look for in the enhanced release on November 10:

  • Support for arbitrary resolutions and widescreen (HD, 4K and beyond), native multi-sampling anti-aliasing (MSAA) and anisotropic filtering (AF) for crisp details at 60 frames per second.
  • Rewritten 3D graphics engine in portable and modern OpenGL 3+, based on the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions, supporting volumetric soft particles.
  • Rewritten audio subsystem for cross-platform reverb and realistic distance scaling, together with stereo, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and HRTF sound output thanks to the new OpenAL Soft back-end.
  • Optional support for Xbox-style controllers with force feedback.
  • Plug-and-play; the player can switch between mouse/keyboard and controller during gameplay at any given time.
  • Full keyboard and mouse support. Added support to the interface so that buttons can be clicked and lists can be scrolled. The camera can be controlled with the mouse.
  • The game is based on the PAL version of the original game, fixing the notorious savegame bug of the NTSC version.
  • Fixed several graphical and collision-related issues that weren't previously visible at lower screen resolutions.
  • Restored HD textures, carefully repainted several GUI elements to remove pillar-boxing and cover the widescreen areas while respecting and following the original artwork.
  • No GUI or HUD stretching.

While I lack an affinity for Sphinx having picked it up from bargain bins but ultimately always placed it back down, I will commend THQ Nordic for not just sitting on IPs like this and de Blob.

And, yeah, there's probably an Assassin's Creed Origins joke in here somewhere.

News:: Here's how Ace Combat 7's dogfights translate to VR

The prospect of playing Ace Combat in virtual reality had me glued to news about Ace Combat 7: Unknown Skies for a while there, but I've started to move on as of late. It's been a long time coming!

Today's trailer from Paris Games Week highlights that particular aspect of the game and it's good to finally see more of the PlayStation VR-specific gameplay up and running. Ace Combat 7 will have its own VR missions separate from the story campaign, which isn't necessarily ideal (I'd prefer a Resident Evil 7 situation where it's the same story content in and out of VR) but it could work out fine.

Ace Combat 7 is still on for 2018 following its delay back in May. (The team needed more time "to perfect and optimize.") It's headed to PC and Xbox One as well if you don't care about the VR stuff.

News:: Monster Hunter: World's beta will be exclusive to PS4 and PS Plus

It wasn't enough for Capcom to reveal earlier today that the PS4 version of Monster Hunter: World will be getting exclusive content based on Horizon: Zero Dawn, they also have another trick up their sleeves. The beta for World will be exclusive to not only the PS4, but also PlayStation Plus users.

Running from December 9th to the 12th, the beta will feature three missions that can be played solo or cooperatively. Two of those missions will take place on "The Great Forest" map, which is named for being a forest (duh), while the final mission will feature "Wildspire Waste," a desert like area. You'll be able to hunt the Great Jagras, an Anjanath and an armored Barroth. Neato.

Along with that news comes another new trailer, showing off "The Rotten Vale." I love how suitably large this game looks thanks to the jump to HD platforms. I'm not sure if I'm sold on the art style, but this still looks like a classic Monster Hunter title through and through.

News:: Review: Blade of the Immortal

Takashi Miike is, in the purest sense of the word, prolific. He has dedicated himself to churning out film after film, year in and year out, often with wildly differing levels of success. Sure, it’s easy to look at fantastic works like Audition or 13 Assassins and say the man is a great director, but for every Audition, there’s a shamefully pedestrian outing like Yakuza Apocalypse in Miike’s filmography. Miike has always rode that line between schlock and greatness, and it gives the impression that even he doesn’t know what he wants to create next. He’s unpredictable, and despite how inconsistent his work can be at times, every now and then, a fantastic movie emerges from his twisted brain.

With Miike’s 100th movie, Blade of the Immortal, another great film has been born.

News:: Overcoming Fear... except not really

[LaScary (the artist formerly known as LaTerry) and I have something in common. I don’t mix well with horror games typically. For me, it’s not even the scary stuff that gets to me. I’m fine with that. It’s that dreaded resource management that kills me, and this genre loves to shoehorn that in to everything. I end up stressing out so much over it that I eventually spend more time outside smoking cigarettes than actually playing the damn game.

My dude here took up the call of arms for this month's Bloggers Wanted, and he found himself on the Front Page as a result! There’s still one more day left in the month, so head over to the Cblogs and get writing! - Kevin]

I don't do well with horror games. I can't handle them even if I love the ideas behind them. The only one that I've been able to finish was P.T. and that was only because my brother was also in the room with me. It was just a tech demo!

Some time ago, Alien: Isolation went on sale on Steam and one of my friends convinced me to buy it. We were going to play it at the same time and voice chat while we did. I suspect he just wanted to hear me whimper like a small hurt child, and if that was the case he definitely got his wish. The game starts out fine enough. The opening scenes are free from danger and dread. There's just a bit of narrative build up to when everything goes wrong.

News:: Hellblade will become profitable next month, according to Ninja Theory

Hellblade saw a different kind of marketing push from Ninja Theory. While studio head Tameem Antoniades usually gets himself into trouble puffing his chest and talking about what his fans "really want from action games," he presented a more of a level-headed approach this time -- which is definitely the right way to go, given the heavy subject matter.

Speaking to GamesBeat, Antoniades explains that Hellblade has nearly broken even, a goal they didn't expect to reach until "six, eight, or [even] nine months." He goes on to say that they'll provide a more detailed break down in the future when they reach this goal, so that more developers are encouraged to do similar projects. Antoniades reminds folks that Ninja Theory wholly owns the IP this time as the publisher, so they don't have to kowtow to another entity.

Given that this doesn't even account for the fact that Ninja Theory raised £60,798 on World Mental Health Day for charity, I'd say this whole ordeal has been a success.

News:: Some people are way too good at Mario Odyssey

There's no shortage of impressive Super Mario Odyssey platforming feats making the rounds now that some players have already mastered Mario's cap-centric moves, but this? This shit is bananas. It's my new go-to clip. How good are people at Mario? Too good!

(If you're wary of spoilers, I wouldn't sweat it. The video from redditor MatrixChicken shows a world Nintendo has featured multiple times in its promotional materials, and there's nothing story-centric. It's just one of the game's hundreds of Moon challenges played extremely well.)

As plenty of folks have noted, Odyssey is going to lend itself to some spectacular speedruns.

News:: Kobo quadruples the storage for limited-edition Aura One e-reader

Enthusiasm for e-readers has slowed in recent years, meaning new entrants have to boldly differentiate or they'll fall under the wheels of Amazon's niche-dominating Kindle. Kobo's Aura One, released in August, is unique in the world of devices: It's waterproof, meaning you can finally take an e-reader into the bath, and has softer light for nighttime perusing. Now Kobo is releasing a limited edition of the device with 32GB of storage, quadruple the space of the original -- which is great news for fans of comics and manga.

News:: Sega reveals Persona sales beat Shin Megami Tensei, and other interesting figures

Although Shin Megami Tensei started it all and has roughly 28 total packaged editions to sell, Persona 5's 13 editions have outsold it over the years. Sega has revealed that since 1987 the MegaTen series has sold 7.2 million units, and Persona has peddled 8.5 since 1996. Persona 5 was a huge reason why it was able to take the crown, as it shifted 1.8 million on its own.

Other interesting numbers include Sonic's total sales since 1991 (360 million units/downloads), Yakuza's sales (10.5 million units/downloads across 75 editions), and Phantasy Star (4.5 million Phantasy Star Online 2 IDs). You can view the entire breakdown below.

With Atlus, Sega seems to be doing well for itself. Even if something isn't localized or is received well critically, they still have an embedded audience. While some developers might cancel a series like Etrian Odyssey for example, it's still trucking at Sega.

News:: Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds looks like more of the good stuff

We're a week away from The Frozen Wilds, Guerrilla Games' first and only expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn. Previous trailers have been fairly reserved, opting to focus on the snowy new scenery, but today's video out of Paris Games Week is all about that action, baby. It'll be nice to revisit this world.

Two quick thoughts. Actually, three! First, I would've loved to have all these ferocious machines as toys as a kid. (I was big into Beast Wars back then.) Second, for all the spectacle here, the sound design really stands out to me in this trailer. And third, it's hard to believe Horizon came out this year. It's been such a stacked year in gaming from beginning to end that my mind just can't keep up with it all.

News:: Blizzard is going to make it easier to follow Overwatch eSports matches

Although Overwatch players generally understand what's happening in any given match, the public at large has found that the whole ordeal of watching a pro match can be somewhat overwhelming with so many different moving parts. It's a valid point given that anyone can catch a match on Disney XD or TBS now that Overwatch's popularity has reached massive heights, but Blizzard has proposed a solution -- a few solutions, actually.

According to director Jeff Kaplan, Blizzard will be implementing several features, described as an "eSports suite," which will debut at BlizzCon. It'll consist of an enhanced third-person camera, better replays, a top-down map that 'casters can use to better describe what's happening, a tournament system that will auto-pause for disconnects, and in-game uniforms that highlight which player is on which team.

In true developer update fashion the video below is just Jeff talking about the tools rather than providing an in-depth look at them, but given that BlizzCon is just a few days away we'll be able to see the fruits of their labor soon enough.

News:: Metal Gear Solid V will be updated for PS4 Pro tomorrow

For those of you who are just now getting into Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain through PlayStation Plus, here's some unexpected news: Konami is dropping a PS4 Pro patch tomorrow.

I've yet to come across any specific changes (I suppose we'll find out tomorrow if all else fails), but I have to imagine the update will have more to do with bumping up the resolution than anything else. Performance-wise, this game is already in a good place on the base PlayStation 4 model.

It'd be nice to see Xbox One X support as well, especially considering The Phantom Pain is joining the Xbox Game Pass in November and that'll encourage even more first-time players. I'm super tempted to start up a new run myself, regardless of what the Pro patch does or doesn't do. I miss DD!

News:: ‘EVE: Valkyrie’ studio is shutting down its VR department

While CCP Games is best known for its space MMO EVE: Online, its VR spin-off game EVE: Valkyrie won praise for its immersive (if limited) gameplay. While the studio had begun to break into other VR titles, including the one-on-one competitive Sparc released for PSVR in August, its virtual reality days are done. Today, news dropped that CCP will dip out of VR development for the next few years and refocus on PC and mobile -- which, unfortunately, means shuttering two of its five global offices.

News:: DrinkBox isn't denying that Guacamelee 2 might come to other platforms

Earlier today, DrinkBox Studios revealed Guacamelee 2 during PlayStation's Paris Games Week showcase. It's a feel-good announcement because Guacamelee is one of those rare games that most everyone who played it has some sort of affection for. A sequel is equal parts exciting and not-surprising.

However, because Guacamelee 2 was announced at PlayStation's event, there's an implication of sorts that it'll be PlayStation-exclusive to some extent. So will it be? Uhhh, probably not but maybe! But unlikely! But who knows.

We put this question in front of DrinkBox, and co-founder Graham Smith gave us an expected answer that we'll leave here for posterity's sake. "We're currently completely focused on the PS4/PS4 Pro versions of Guacamelee 2, and aren't announcing any other platforms at this time," Graham said.

That sounds an awful lot like indication that it'll make its way outside the PlayStation family of devices. Guacamelee 2 could very well be a timed-exclusive for PS4, though. Or, Sony might just control the conversation around the announce window. Again, who knows. These types of details usually don't trickle out for a while. It is maybe worth noting that the first Guacamelee released on PS3 and Vita in 2013; it came to Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U approximately 15 months later in 2014.

Anyway, DrinkBox also sent along these two exclusive screenshots to share. They're scenes that you'll be able to see for yourself in Guacamelee 2 on PS4 and possibly other places too.

News:: Splatoon 2's next European splatfest is a battle of breakfasts

Having put the world to rights on the correct way to hang toilet roll, Nintendo's Splatoon 2 returns to Europe this weekend to once and for all sort out the questions that matter. This week: Do you like a warm breakfast, or a cold breakfast?

I guess by "Warm" or "Cold" they are referring to cooked breakfasts, such as bacon and eggs or similar, to a bowl of Cheerios or some other cereal. I find "Warm" to be a really odd choice of term too, because if there's one thing I love, it's slightly-above-room-temperature sausage.

Whether you're a fan of stuffing yourself with trans-fats first thing, or maybe flushing through a bunged-up system with a tall glass of orange juice, be sure to pick your corner this weekend, as the Warm Breakfast vs Cold Breakfast splatfest begins Saturday, November 4 at 16:00 CET.

News:: Assassin's Creed: Origins beats Super Mario Odyssey to the top spot in UK Charts

In the biggest release week that the industry has seen in quite some time, Ubisoft's stealth-sequel Assassin's Creed: Origins has fought off Nintendo's Super Mario Odyssey and Bethesda's Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to take the top spot in the UK Charts.

In a listing crammed with big-budget releases, Gran Turismo: Sport dropped a gear from first place to fifth, whilst previous high rollers Shadow of War, WWE 2K18 and South Park: The Fractured But Whole are slowly being pushed out of the Top Ten. Destiny 2 retains seventh place from last week.

Pour a forty for Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy, which has finally left the Top Ten, where it has been sitting pretty ever since its initial release in June. Well done, Vicarious Visions. Be sure to tune in next week to see Call of Duty: WW2 debut at number one.

News:: EVE Online developer CCP closes Atlanta office as it backs away from VR games

Three years ago, EVE Online developer CCP was a leading virtual reality creator as EVE Valkyrie was pegged as one of the first must-have VR experiences. At EVE Vegas earlier this month, we reported on CCP shifting its mindset away from VR for the first time in years. Today, that has led to significant restructuring within the company.

News has just broken that CCP has closed its Atlanta studio, the team that's primarily focused on VR projects like Sparc. Senior programmer Sigurdur Gunnarsson confirmed this on Twitter, and stated that he's not being relocated within CCP.

Although little information is available about this shuttering, Icelandic outlet Morgunbladid reports what we heard at EVE Vegas: It's because CCP is stepping back from VR. Further, it seems as if CCP is selling its Newcastle branch, which is the studio that led the efforts on Valkyrie. Moving forward, the EVE Online developer is going to focus on PC and mobile games.

It's tough to fully understand the magnitude of this without many details. The Atlanta branch is estimated to have had 70 employees (although that number could be outdated). It seems that layoffs rather than relocation is how CCP opted to handle this. We've been told that somewhere around 100 employees were affected.

We've contacted CCP for comment on the Atlanta studio situation. We'll update this post if/when we hear back. Everyone at Destructoid wishes the best for all the former CCP employees and hope they land on their feet as quickly as possible.

News:: Review: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Do you remember back in 2014, when franchise reboot Wolfenstein: The New Order was first announced? Everyone was furious about the title's marketing campaign, with many gamers taking genuine issue with the gleeful abandon in which the game's Nazi-killing themes were represented.

Oh no, wait, actually no-one gave a shit. It basically wasn't an issue. Roll on a mere three years later and we have folk fuming over such concepts. Nazis have been getting obliterated in Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, et al for decades, no-one batted an eyelid. Yet now, suddenly, we're supposed to start wringing our hands and applying pseudo-intellectual pontification over such matters? What happened?

One of the reasons people cry foul with The New Colossus' marketing is because they see today's climate (in rare cases, perhaps themselves) referenced within it. A climate that may not have seemed quite so contemporary back in 2014. The Wolfenstein narrative is a fictional tale about the successful rise of global fascism. If people want to complain that Bethesda are cheaply "exploiting current events," then how did we let those events become current?

The issue here isn't that Bethesda chose to adapt real-world political slogans, or genuine feelings of civil unrest, in order to sell their wares. Hell, they were making these games years before such slogans were in the public zeitgeist. No, the issue lies with us folk, for allowing such a gross climate to return to a state of prominence, thus being ripe for artistic reference in the first place.

But that's just the tip of this particular political hot potato, another topic for another time, maybe. But right now, gather your arms brothers and sisters, 'cos we got Nazis to smash.

News:: Rocket League's launching on Switch on November 14

One of the most-anticipated multiplayer games for the Switch now has a release date. Rocket League will launch on Nintendo Switch on November 14.

Psyonix sent out a press release today announcing the release date and a price of $20. As confirmed earlier this year, the Switch version will have a handful of Nintendo-themed cars. All console platforms have gotten this treatment; PlayStation has Twisted Metal Sweet Tooth, and Xbox has Halo's Warthog (called the Hogsticker) and Gears of War-based Armadillo.

The particularly interesting facet of the Switch version is that it's the only portable way to play Rocket League. That takes on something of a new importance whenever Psyonix is able to implement cross-platform parties. We only have to wait two weeks to find out what Rocket League on the go feels like.

The Last of Us: Part II is a violent game. At least, that's the message Naughty Dog and Sony broadcast this morning when they debuted a new cinematic trailer at Paris Games Week. By firelight, the captors place a noose around the woman's neck and nearly slice open her own gut -- until one of her allies is caught nearby.
