News:: Here's the first trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition on Switch

As we learned last week, we're getting a "No, really this is actually the final version, we promise" re-release of Hyrule Warriors on the Switch. Nintendo even went so far as to call it "The Ultimate Version of Hyrule Warriors." Can't get much more definitive than ultimate.

Now we have the first trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition courtesy of Koei Tecmo. It's in Japanese, but it gets the point across. It cuts to a bunch of characters and features all the frantic sword-swinging we'd expect.

As for actual details, the Nintendo mini-Direct was the best place for that (here's a time-stamped link). That's where we found out that Definitive Edition has every map, character, and mission for both the Wii U and 3DS versions including all DLC; that it's 1080p in TV mode; that it has two-player split-screen support; and that there are exclusive Link and Zelda Breath of the Wild outfits.

However, maybe the most important thing about this trailer is that it seemingly corroborates the supposed release date. Although Nintendo has only pinned this down to a Spring launch, a press release went out in Hong Kong that had a March 22 date attached to it. The end of this Japanese trailer also indicates March 22. So yeah, it's probably coming out on March 22, at least in Asian territories.

If the trailer and all that info isn't enough for you, check out this Definitive Edition game page on Game City's site. It has that Hyrule Warriors aesthetic that you crave. If you're curious how certain Dtoid editors feel about this, Jordan just told me "I feel like they own my soul and I'll have to play this for 200 hours." I know for a fact that he put about that much time into the Wii U version. I might have to break his Switch. It's the only way to set him free.

News:: How to massively improve Nintendo's games

[Ummm, excuse me, Nintendo is a publicly traded company first and foremost, we must make as much money as possible. ~Marcel]

How to Make Nintendo Games Better:

Nintendo have undoubtedly had a great year with the roll-out of the Switch and several great games. Not only did they over-perform on their sale expectations, but also made several great games to launch their newest hybrid console.

News:: ‘Skullgirls’ relaunches on mobile as developer ditches publisher

Stylized fighting game Skullgirls came out for mobile in May of last year. It was developed by Autumn Games and initially published by Line. Now, the developer has decided to part ways with the publisher and go back to being independent. As a result of this transition, the developer launched a new version (basically Skullgirls 2.0) and shut down the old one (now called LINE Skullgirls) on the App Store and Google Play.

News:: Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the latest game to get a special PS4 console

It seems with any new game coming out in Japan, there is a themed PS4 console to go along with it. If you're a fan of Valkyria Chronicles and are eagerly awaiting the upcoming 4, why not import this garish looking beast? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

This model is a PS4 Slim and it comes in 500 GB (33,480 yen) and 1 TB (38,480 yen) variants. You'll also (obviously) get a copy of the game with this bundle alongside a PS4 theme to show off to your friends. This console will be available the same day as the game, which comes out March 21 in Japan.

News:: Super Troopers 2 gets a new red band trailer

The original Super Troopers remains one of my favorite comedies of all time. It strikes a perfect chord of raunchy, slapstick, and joke-driven comedy that still makes me laugh until I hurt even after watching it multiple times over the years. With that in mind, I obviously cannot wait for the sequel, despite comedy sequels rarely living up to more than just callbacks and rehashes.

Thankfully the new trailer that was released for Super Troopers 2 today isn't completely made up of rehashes, which gives me hope. I could continue going on about the movie and the general concept of comedy but you aren't here to read my words so watch the trailer and enjoy!

Super Troopers 2 releases on April 20, 2018 because of course it does.

News:: Darwin Project's open beta is worth a look for battle royale fans

Darwin Project didn't leave much of an impression on me back at E3, but now that the multiplayer survival game is running an open beta for the weekend, I figured it was due another look.

Set around the post-apocalyptic Canadian Rockies, it's a deadly reality show in which 10 players compete against each other and their harsh environment, laying traps and trying to stay warm.

"In other games, the most fun part of the experience is when you're fighting other players, but this represents less than 10 percent of the match," says writer Vance Musgrave.

To keep the action flowing throughout the match, Scavengers Studio gives players a few tools to see what everyone else is up to. A few examples: player-made fires are highly visible, footprints can be tracked, and harvested resources leave clues that temporarily reveal the player's position on the map.

There's also Mixer (and planned Twitch) functionality built right into the game's core design. Stream viewers can place live bets on individual Darwin Project players, and the eye-in-the-sky Show Director can actively help or hurt participants. "He/She is the host and master who controls the arena with nuclear bombs, zone closures, gravity storms, and the power of their voice."

Some interesting ideas for the increasingly-crowded battle royale genre, to be sure.

The open beta is live on Steam and will continue until Sunday, January 21 at 9:00pm Pacific. Scavengers Studio plans to go through Steam Early Access and bring Darwin Project to Xbox One.

News:: Review: Den of Thieves

We all know January sucks for the most part in terms of movie releases. Studios are either pushing their Oscar hopefuls out wide or dumping the things they couldn't release the rest of the year. It's a rare case when a January movies are rarely something to get excited about, but January movies are something different from just bad movies. A January movie isn't just awful, it's lost. Often aimless and pointless, it finds its way into the only month that will accept it. Maybe it isn't even a "bad" movie, but just kind of has no point.

In that way Den of Thieves couldn't be a more January movie: a film that seems completely devoid of any point or true effort. It's a movie with famous people in it, but it's unclear why it exists at all. It makes no point and does nothing special. If a movie was ever to define January movies this would probably be it.

News:: We Happy Few hit with a minor delay so the developer can rearrange part of the story

Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. We Happy Few, a game that's almost finally finished, needs just a little more time for developer Compulsion Games to get everything just right.

In a video update today (embedded above), Compulsion announced that We Happy Few is content complete, meaning that all of the narrative and gameplay stuff is done. But, it's delaying from April 2018 to summer 2018 because the developer isn't happy with the first few hours of the game.

We Happy Few's story takes place over the course of three different characters' arcs. As Compulsion explains, the studio isn't happy with how Arthur's arc plays out (sounds like someone hasn't been taking their Joy pills). As such, Compulsion is taking a few extra months to rearrange those story moments so that everything moves in a more engaging way.

Simultaneous to this update, Compulsion and publisher Gearbox have made an interesting business decision. Back in August, the Early Access price of We Happy Few was raised from $30 to $51. Compulsion reasoned that this was the expected price of the final game. Fans responded that $51 is too much for an unfinished title.

Now, Compulsion is offering a refund to anyone who bought the game on Steam regardless of how long they've played it. Additionally, starting on February 1, there won't be an option to pre-purchase We Happy Few on Steam until much closer to launch. Compulsion says this decision was made because "We won't be offering any additional Early Access updates beyond August's 'Life in Technicolour,' [and] we think having this labeled Early Access and charging the price of a larger game caused more confusion than we had hoped."

Big day for We Happy Few -- a delay and a new refund policy. Both in-game and out, Compulsion's whole routine is trying to keep people happy.

News:: Gravel's arcade approach reminds me of off-road racing's heyday

I want, for a moment, to tell you about the absolute worst time I’ve had while gaming. Well, I actually wasn’t gaming. I was chilling out max and relaxing all cool with a buddy of mine for what I thought was going to be some kickass Cuphead time on his Xbox One. While we eventually would get to that near-masterpiece, the first 45 minutes of my visit was spent looking on as he tweaked every goddamn tweakable part of his 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee in Forza 7.

I’ve played Forza, Gran Turismo, and Project Cars, and while they’re all just stunning to look at, I just don’t care for racing games where I have to pay attention to that many minute details and make minuscule adjustments all in hopes of improving my lap time by as much as three seconds. Hell, I barely tolerate the customization options in the last Mario Kart. Call me a filthy casual, but I believe racing games are at their best when I can just pick a car and get my ass on the track. That’s what I like and that’s what Gravel is looking to deliver when it launches next month.

It’s been a while since we last talked about Gravel and I was surprised when the Square Enix representatives on hand for my hands-on informed me its launch was just over a month out. Given it was supposed to launch last summer, maybe I shouldn’t have been too surprised.

News:: Check out a few really pretty minutes of Granblue Fantasy PS4 gameplay

Despite being one of the biggest names in Japanese gacha gaming, Cygames' RPG Granblue Fantasy doesn't seem all that well-known outside the otaku scene. That's to be expected, given the game is theoretically Japan-exclusive. This status quo is one that Cygames has opted to keep to for some reason, despite the game being playable internationally (via browser) and having a fully-integrated English localization available.

Whatever the motivation for keeping the main Granblue game in relative obscurity, I hope they don't sleep on pushing Granblue Fantasy Project Re: LINK across the pond. Announced long ago and being developed by Platinum, whatever Re: LINK ends up being called is looking really pretty, as evidenced by some direct-feed gameplay footage below.

First aired at Granblue Festival (yes, they have their own con), the footage shows character Katalina strolling through a picturesque town, encountering fully rendered 3D versions of generic NPCs that in the main game are just 2D cutouts. Party members Percival, Rackam, and Io are added to the party for a big fight against a large boss, showing off the action flair Platinum are known for. Notable is how closely Re:LINK adapts the style of the main game, from the font of the damage numbers to their attempts to emulate the vividly colored special effects used by art director Hideo Minaba. Even the gameplay feels informed by the source, featuring a "Chain Burst" special effect that triggers when the party unleashes their ultimate attacks in quick succession.

It remains to be seen what the rest of the game will be like outside the combat, but at this point I'm kind of excited by the prospect this janky browser RPG get a treatment befitting its popularity. I just hope I don't have to roll the dice again to see if I can play my favorite characters.

News:: Play the backup dancer in Hatsune Miku VR

Hatsune Miku's second foray in virtual reality is your first chance to dance alongside her. Whereas Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live put you in the crowd for one of her concerts, this new venture is more about mimicking her moves.

Degica Games has revealed Hatsune Miku VR which will release in "early 2018" on Steam VR for both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. There are eight songs and two difficulty settings planned for launch, but the developer notes that more tracks will be added post-release. Hatsune Miku VR will have English, Japanese, and Chinese support (among other unlisted languages that the developer simply lumps together as "and more").

Unlike other rhythm-based Hatsune Miku titles, this one makes use of VR controls. That means no standard d-pad and face buttons to lean on. You're gonna have to dance just like her. No pressure but she's, like, really good.

News:: Technos' legendary brawler Double Dragon available now on Nintendo Switch

HAMSTER take another step toward their goal of releasing 800 classic arcade games with one of the most recognisable names of all-time: Double Dragon, which launched this week on Nintendo Switch.

Released by Technos in 1987, the scrolling brawler is a oft-mentioned memory by those who recall converging in dimly-lit arcades to guide brothers Billy and Jimmy through the mean streets, beating down members of the Black Warrior gang, on a quest to rescue kidnapped buddy Marion.

I repeat (ad-nauseum) that I was fortunate enough to grow up in the arcade era. I spent most of my formative years pumping coins into countless games, many of which I still revisit today. I do have fond memories of Double Dragon, but I personally don't think it holds up well today. The genre would be perfected in following years with games like Final Fight, Vendetta and Violent Storm, all of which stole the template of the Technos' classic and markedly reworked it.

Undeniably, Double Dragon is absolutely a trend-setter and a genuinely iconic title, more than deserving of a place in the arcade Hall of Fame. Today, it still has a cool soundtrack, fun visuals and pulls on serious nostalgia strings. This re-release features local co-op, so you and a chum can play through a legitimate slice of video game history.

Double Dragon is available now on Nintendo Switch, priced at $8.

News:: 2018's biggest Super Smash Bros. tourney is officially supported by Nintendo

Genesis has been a Super Smash Bros. eSports staple since 2009. It kicked off in the San Francisco area every few years (2009, 2011, 2013) before taking a massive hiatus, only to return in 2017 and announce dates for 2018.

This year things are really looking up. The tournament organizers over at Genesis have announced that this year, they're officially partnering up with Nintendo of America as a sanctioned event. Nintendo has had a cagey history with eSports, but with pushes for Splatoon and even ARMS, they've lightened up a little (the same goes for streaming and the like with their Nintendo partner program).

Just like last year 2018's tourney will be held in San Jose, California, and will feature Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U alongside of six other games.

News:: Here's a ridiculous trailer for Metal Gear Survive

We're in the midst of the Metal Gear Survive beta. How's it going so far?

While I haven't had time to play just yet, I have to admit, I like what I'm seeing of the wave-based co-op survival title strictly in a dumb-fun-with-friends sort of way. This game probably shouldn't exist, but it does, and there's seemingly some joy to be had if you can take it for what it is. (Assuming the inherent always-online requirement and microtransactions don't sour the whole thing.)

As Ray puts it, Metal Gear Survive is "like Dead Rising on that Fox Engine crack."

Also, quick aside: I'll be amazed if Konami doesn't eventually add a battle royale mode or explore that in a separate spin-off. Metal Gear Solid V's mechanics and gunplay would lend themselves so well.

News:: Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg stepping down from role in March

Activision Publishing's CEO Eric Hirshberg will step down this March, after a eight-year stint within the role, a run that has seen the company through multiple million-dollar releases.

Although no reason was given for Hirshberg's departure, a statement from Activision spoke of his "strong leadership" and that his stepping down would leave the industry giant "in a strong position for growth". Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick also praised Hirshberg's leadership skills, adding that "we will all miss his creativity and tenacity very much".

Of his time with the company, in which he oversaw the publishing of Call of Duty, Destiny and Skylanders titles, Eric said serving with Activision was "an honor and a thrill," and that he had "nothing but appreciation for Bobby for giving me this transformational opportunity, and also for having the vision and conviction to champion a creative person for a leadership role on this scale.”

Eric Hirshberg's contract concludes March 31, 2018. Activision is currently seeking his replacement.

News:: Exclusive: Here's a first look at the Gears of War General RAAM origin story comic

Gears of War is still a powerhouse of a series. The latest iteration, Gears of War 4, was released not too long ago in 2016, and just got a massive 4K overhaul for the Xbox One X. It's also spawned a board game from Fantasy Flight, novels, a potential film, and comic books.

The latter set of merch is particularly interesting, as they've been exploring various facets of the universe that the game hasn't touched, which includes a brand new series focusing on the origin story of General RAAM -- arguably the biggest villain in Gears of War's 12 year history. This new series is set to debut next week with its first issue, penned by Kurtis Wiebe of Rat Queens fame and illustrated by Max Dunbar, who has worked on some incredible Transformers art

It'll run for several issues, and culminate in June with a trade paperback containing the entire tale. Like most of the work dedicated to the Gears universe it's on-brand so far with plenty of ultra-violence. Although the over-arching COG narrative kind of waxes and wanes for me, I'm always interested to delve more into the story of the Locust Horde. Over the years they've developed a highly detailed backstory, chronicling their religious hierarchy, society, and their transition into the new enemy of the series, the Swarm.

Feel free to peruse the gallery below for a sample of the first few pages and the cover art.

News:: Takayuki Yamada returns in another silly Monster Hunter: World advert

Sony Japan have released another commercial for Capcom's upcoming Monster Hunter: World featuring their regular advertising star, Takayuki Yamada. It is suitably daft, in keeping with previous ads.

There's currently no subtitles for the sixty-second spot, but it hardly matters, given the crazy physicality of the Lulz on display. Yamada, looking dapper as always, does his best impression of some of the gargantuan creatures players will be tracking, once the open-world adventure drops next week.

News:: The latest Dynasty Warriors 9 trailer showcases good old fashioned open world screwing around

It's strange to think of Dynasty Warriors 9 as a chill game where you wander around the wilderness, find items and gather wood, but here we are.

This newest video from Koei Tecmo shows off a bunch of open world activities, including fishing, meandering around villages and the wild, and vendor items. I know a lot of people don't "get" Warriors/Musou games, but for me, they're therapeutic. Adding resource gathering, pandas, camping, and other recreational events only amplifies that.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is due out on February 13 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in the west. In Japan it's just arriving on PS4 on February 8.

News:: Terrible future volleyball returns as Power Spikes II gets re-released

HAMSTER have added another '90s Neo Geo arcade to their increasing catalogue of titles, with non-classic Power Spikes II now available for download on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

I've previously made mention of how, throught the early '90s, SNK were besotted with the gimmick of "Future Sports", which essentially translated to "just add cybernetics". 1994's Power Spikes II, sequel to Super Volley '91, is no exception, and sees such themes pasted onto the world of pro-volleyball.

Players can choose between regular volleyball, with eight teams from around the world competing for International glory, or enter into the new "Hyper League", which takes place in outer space (of course) and features teams such as the Iron Fangs and Turbo Force. Also included are special spikes to enable players to literally wipe their opponents off the court. A poor-man's Johnny 5 shows up to referee.

Power Spikes II is Not Good. It has a pointless 2D viewpoint and, outside of spiking, plays at a slow, monotonous pace. There is zero room for tactical, precise aiming when your entire team exists on one plane. For these and other reasons, it was slated hard on its original Neo Geo release. Deservedly so.

News:: The German game ratings board's cleaning crew almost threw Nintendo Labo in the garbage

Nintendo Labo is basically a combination of cardboard and software designed to spur the creative spark in all of us. Unless you mistake it as literal cardboard and almost throw it out.

This story from the German ratings board (USK) is chuckle-worthy -- according to a tweet from the board, their cleaning crew almost threw out the sample Nintendo had sent. Translated, the tweet states, "Finally we can tell the story, when we had the latest Nintendo hardware, it was almost dumped by the cleaning crew as waste paper. In the past no one would have believed this story, anyway."

I'm not sure what to think about Nintendo Labo yet. I mean, I can dig the idea of marketing STEM concepts to kids. It's been a pretty widespread trend the past year with a handful of startups, so it makes perfect sense why a major player would be getting in on the fun.

But! This is Nintendo we're talking about here. The inventor of the Game Boy Printer, and the Wii Vitality Sensor. I had to read droves of articles about how the latter would "change the industry forever," until it was silently canceled four years after it was announced. Labo seems like a more concerted effort, and pre-orders are even up right now, but if it doesn't take off I can see Nintendo canning it.

News:: The 52 Gal Deco arrives in Splatoon 2 tonight

Hello. It's Friday, so you must be here to see the latest hand-cannon to be added to the colourful world of Nintendo Switch shooter, Splatoon 2. Today sees the release of the .52 Gal Deco.

The .52 Gal is a mid-range weapon with a relatively slow fire-rate, compensated by it's high damage output. This glossy Deco equivalent comes with the same specs, but an all-new loadout comprised of a Curling Bomb sub and a Sting Ray special. The latter should at least provide some substance for those troublesome long-range encounters.

As usual, North American players can expect the .52 Gal Deco to go live in the game this evening, with Japan and Europe to follow tomorrow morning. Happy inking. Squid-kids

News:: Pour another one out for the Wii U, the Nintendo UK site removed it to make room for Nintendo Labo

The Wii U didn't just get discontinued, it has been dying a continuous death for the past year or so.

A number of remakes have been announced for the Switch, to the point where almost the entire Wii U first party lineup seems to be slated for it, but this extra nail in its coffin was particularly funny to me. As someone has pointed out, the Nintendo UK website has utterly erased the Wii U's existence from the map.

Previously it was designated directly under the Nintendo Switch icon on the front page, but now that spot is reserved for the newly announced Nintendo Labo project. It doesn't even seem to have been moved to the "Misc" section.

News:: Nintendo Labo kits receive UK prices and release date

Cardboard fans of the United Kingdom rejoice! Nintendo have released details on when you can get your hands on their intriguing new Switch game/accessory/peripheral/thing, Nintendo Labo.

The U.K (as well as Europe) will see both the Variety and Robot kits land on their shores April 27, exactly one week after the U.S. release. In terms of cost, this surprisingly isn't the usual case of just switching the dollar sign to a pound symbol, as both kits will see a slight price adjustment.

The Robot kit will have a £70 price-tag, whilst the Variety kit runs a tenner cheaper at £60. The Customisation kit, which allows you to add stickers and designs to your creations, will retail for £9. In keeping with its U.S. counterpart, Amazon UK now have pre-order pages open for all three sets.

When I was a tiny kid, like, seven years old, I built a robot suit out of cardboard boxes. I went out in the garden wearing it, and my neighbour, a grown man, laughed at it and mocked me. Still hurts...

News:: Patch 4.2 coming later this month for Final Fantasy XIV, will heavily focus on Final Fantasy VI

Square Enix dumped a ton of info on Patch 4.2 for Final Fantasy XIV in the early morning today, just 11 days before it's actually scheduled to arrive. It's called "Rise of a New Sun," and will see a number of alterations to the housing market in addition to the standard new dungeons, story quests, trials, and raids.

A new set of trials is confirmed, focusing on "The Four Lords" -- Jade Stoa and Byakko have been highlighted, which draw from the lore of Chinese constellations. Ninja, Red Mage, Bard, Dragoon, and Samurai aren't getting any real changes, but tanks are getting shaken up the most as Dark Knights and Warriors are getting buffs, and Paladins are getting damage nerfs. A hard remake of The Fractal Continuum dungeon is coming, as well as the all-new Hells' Lid. A Crystal Tower Training Grounds PVP map is also in the pipeline.

Perhaps one of the biggest shakeups is housing. Six new wards are being added to each area, which can be purchased on week after 4.2, allotted to Free Companies (guilds) first with specific plots. Then personal housing will come "at a later date," with the restriction of one private and one Free Company estate per world, per service account. That's a pretty huge move to circumvent hardcore gil farmers from buying up entire wards. To prevent controversy, a new housing website is being built to explain the entire situation so people know what's up.

News:: Taiwan ratings board lists Wild Guns: Reloaded for Nintendo Switch

That pesky Taiwan Games Ratings Board is at it again, listing yet-to-be-announced video games to the world. This time, it is the turn of Wild Guns: Reloaded, the revamped edition of Natsume's 1994 SNES title, Wild Guns.

Wild Guns was an arcade shooter in the vein of classic coin-ops such as Cabal. The game allowed one or two players to run and gun their way through numerous Steampunk-themed levels, taking down mechanised outlaws and anachronistic weaponry, way before Will Smith ever stepped into the Wild Wild West.

Wild Guns: Reloaded, released for the PS4 in 2016, features new characters, enemies, music and stages as well as incorporating support for up to four players. It was ported to Steam just last year, so plans to move it onto the Nintendo Switch, currently a haven for retro-styled titles, is a no-brainer.

There is currently no official confirmation, price or release date for frantic bullet-fest. But we will keep you informed if and when such news is available.
