News::Immersive VR Space Experience Cosmonaut Launches Greenlight Campaign

VRFocus - Most virtual reality (VR) space simulation titles pit players in the cockpit of a spacecraft to take part in sci-fi dogfights. That isn't the case with Cosmonaut, a new immersive space simulation title from indie developer We Came From Mars. This week sees the title launch a Steam Greenlight campaign hoping to secure enough positive votes to be approved for sale on Valve's digital PC store come full launch. When it does launch it will feature full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) along with Microsoft's Kinect motion sensor.

Cev from Codec Moments writes: "A couple of months back a game entered the crosshairs that I saw a lot of promise in, at least in regards to taking the FPS genre in a different direction for a change. News::GRAV is a survival sandbox set on alien worlds

I don't know when I'll be in a state of mind to play another "sandbox survival experience," but I do like the look of GRAV and its vibrant alien worlds. The dancing is a nice touch, too.

This is a PC game in development at BitMonster, a studio founded a couple years back by former Epic Games developers (and also a pair of adorable dogs). It ticks off the usual boxes: resource gathering, crafting, modular base building, procedural generation, ranged/melee combat, player versus player but, again, the setting appears to be the defining characteristic.

BitMonster is hoping to push GRAV through Steam Greenlight and release it on Early Access, which I'm sure it'll be able to do in no time -- the game seems like something Steam users at large would be into. They can play it and provide feedback while I wait for the finished version.

News::Hack 'n' Slash Review | Super Clash Gaming

If you ask many gamers one thing they could do in a game that the developer would never find out about, it would probably be exploiting or cheating at a game they just bought. Hack n Slash is just that sort of. The game is a top-down, action-adventure game where your items and weapons turn into tools used for hacking. It made it to the commercial market after Double Fine Productions held an Amnesia Fortnight event in 2012. Amnesia Fortnight is a process that lets people who work at Double Fine make a game in 2 weeks and then present all for voting. Afterwards the top five are chosen for actual commercial release. Hack n Slash was the highest voted one among the public and went to Early Access in May, releasing just a few months ago.

World of Warcrafts Darkmoon Faire world event launched the other day, and it became obvious almost straight away that it brought the distant fragrance of the Warlords of Draenor expansion set to launch next Thursday with it. The week-long extravaganza was probably put out to set the stage for the big WoD launch, and it does indeed do a fine job at that, with its exotic vendors, daily quests, various interesting mini-games and its level 103 world boss.

News::Holy carp, look at this fish!

The makers of Train Simulator have released their next project, a fishing sim, on Steam Early Access. It caught my attention for a few reasons, the first being that the game is way cheaper than I was expecting. Here's why: this initial build of Dovetail Games Fishing is only $6.99 but as more features are added, the price for new customers will increase. Ahh.

With that said, the current game up for sale is in a bare-bones state. There's physics-based casting/reeling with tutorials, challenges, and leaderboards, but what you're trying to catch are "simple practice fish" that are randomly generated and seem to serve as simple targets more than anything. Realistic fish AI will arrive in the next major update before the end of the year.

This line on the Early Access page sums up Dovetail's strategy: "Players should expect an experience that increases over time but that may be unsatisfying, frustrating, or disappointing to begin with. We will only move development of new features forward once we and the Early Access community are happy with the results of the previous stage."

TL;DR: look at that fish!

News::Defender's Quest HD coming as free update

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten is one my favorite tower defense games, right up there with Immortal Defense , but I haven't gone back to play it again. That'll have to change soon -- there's an HD re-release with new cutscene art, sprites, and general improvements in the works.

This new version uses the same engine as Defender's Quest 2 and will be a free update for owners of the original game when it arrives "sometime in the near future." Your progress will carry over and if you somehow prefer the old art (really?), that can be toggled on/off.

Level Up Labs says the HD update will not slow down work on the sequel. "We've hired separate art contractors to HD-ify DQ1, and robustly testing the DQ2 engine against DQ1's data set was already a big part of my job in building DQ2," writes designer Lars Doucet.

Looking forward to both!

News::Ryse: Son of Rome - PC Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes: The months leading up to the release of the Xbox One saw a large number of marketing campaigns showing off Microsoft's next console; one of the main focuses of the Xbox One's launch campaigns was the latest offering from Crytek. Those that have been around a while will know that I was extremely impressed with Crytek's Crysis trilogy on the Xbox 360 as it provided some of the best looking games for the last generation. The next generation of Microsoft consoles was going to launch with Ryse: Son of Rome, Crytek's newest title and designed to show off the power of the Xbox One. While the launch for the Xbox One was not terrible, it did not release to the fanfare that one would expect out of a Crytek title. Now nearly a year after the launch of the Xbox One Crytek has released Ryse: Son of Rome via Steam; is the second coming of the Son of Rome worth the investment?
