News::Outlast's Whistleblower DLC sure looks unsettling

As much as I like being scared, there's a sense of dread I have to overcome before returning to horror games I've already played through. Perhaps you'll find yourself in a similar situation after watching this effective trailer for Outlast 's Whistleblower DLC. It's out May 6 for PC and North American PlayStation 4, and May 7 for European PS4 at a price point of $8.99.

Whistleblower is set before the core Outlast story -- at least initially -- and revolves around a software engineer up at Mount Massive Asylum. He's understandably not okay with the experiments going on there. According to developer Red Barrels, this DLC will "stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter." Closure: we could use some.

News::Review: Life Goes On

In most games, as in the real world, death is something to be avoided. Often it is a learning experience, but that is used to teach how not to die next time. In Life Goes On, the gameplay centers on death, but its approach is one of utility and necessity. One man may die in order for others to succeed in the future.

As a puzzle platformer, the idea appears a bit shallow at first, but it leverages some great game design tenets to stay fresh throughout the experience. Though it begins with the simple concept of using dead bodies as stepping stones to cross spike pits, it is constantly introducing new puzzle elements to play with across its dense campaign.

Rocksteady helped take an already popular Batman and elevate him even more with the Arkham games, and Beenox has done a fair job of keeping Spider-Man in the limelight under Activision's banner. So with the right developer and a good enough gameplay concept at the center of the game's design, there's a few characters who could really shine with the proper spotlight shown on them within the interactive entertainment market.

News::Daylight Review | Amber Plays Games

Amber writes: "Its fair to say that there is a lack of good horror games around at the moment, nor has a decently made title been released for some time now. Zombie Studios Daylight appears to be bringing the genre back to life again with plenty of genuine jump scare moments, eerie environments and a first-person view of the action. Even so, where Daylight appears to be heading in the right direction with its shock inducing moments, it does fall back on itself with everything else including a rather bland story."

News::Jet Set Radio composer contributing to Hover

Composer Hideki Naganuma of Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future fame has signed on for Hover: Revolt of Gamers , that neat open-world inline skating game. Considering its developers were inspired by those titles and fans of JSR seem to be digging it, that's a good get.

Speaking about the project, which is doing quite well on Kickstarter, Naganuma said "It was love at first sight. Hover has hot graphics and a cool worldview. At first glance, I felt like I'd love to make music for Hover. This feeling's been a long time since Jet Set Radio Future."

Looking ahead, there are stretch goals to double the game's city size and create a Wii U version with asymmetric gameplay. Plenty of time left in the campaign to meet those and potentially more. For now, the plan is to release Hover on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

News::Review: Daylight (New Gamer Nation)

Horror games are officially in "come-back" mode thanks to their success on the PC platform. Games like Slender and Amnesia showed gamers that being scared can be fun and there is a place in gaming for horror. Even Outlast on the PlayStation 4 executed its mission nicely and strengthened the case that horror games are here to stay. Then we have Davlight, a procedurally-generated horror game. Basically, Daylight's base elements are generated on the fly so each playthrough you experience is never the same. This concept works great for action and puzzle games since it keeps gamers on their toes and keeps the material fresh. On the surface, this method of game design should translate well to the horror genre because it would just enhance the random aspects of the game which is where most horror games derive their scares from. However, with Daylight, not everything went according to plan.

News::Gamespot - Fract OSC Video Review

Nick Capozzoli: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture" goes the oft-quoted saying. It's a snide little shiv of an expression: reductive and crude, but I imagine it's good for a messy ambush on a music journalist's ego. Our flailing attempts to render sounds with words can certainly leave something to be desired; take a trip through an audiophiles' forum, and you'll reliably find linguistic gesticulations like "extra bass, insight, and depth of music" being used to justify $600 digital cables. But there's an appreciable skill in capturing the essence of one art in the form of another. That's what makes endeavors like Fract OSC, which seeks to illustrate music within the strictures of a video game, worth the effort of an honest appraisal.

News::Chiptune artist Shael Riley wants to train your ears with new game

Shael Riley (of The Double Ice Backfire) and his pals at ThaSauce Games want to bring music game fans something fresh and unique to the genre, in the hopes it will be picked up by Steam Greenlight. Riley tackled the art, sound, and game design, while fellow developer Chris Motola took the brunt of the programming work. The duo has teamed with gaming site ThaSauce head honcho Doug Arley to help refine their UI. Rather than being a typical rhythm game, this looks to be more along the lines of working with music theory.

String's Theory tasks players with attempting to pick out major, minor, or seventh chords hiding among other notes. It's a form of training the ear to hear the bad note within a chord, and eliminating it. The puzzle/music game hybrid features over 40 levels that look to not only entertain but also help players learn how to hear and understand notes and chords.

As a guy who has always struggled with wishing my ear was better attuned to what notes I was hearing, this certainly appeals to me, and the straightforward interface seems easy to grasp, while offering a suitable amount of challenge as you progress.

Check out the Steam Greenlight page for String's Theory and see what you think.

News::Bardbarian Review | GameGrin

Gaming has advanced so far, so rapidly over the past 30 years that its difficult to find a game that contains something truly, completely, original. Dont get excited, Bardbarian isnt one of those games. What this mobile and PC title does well, however, is take a lot of tried and tested mechanics and blend them into something unusual. That can often be just as effective as something totally new, there are too many examples of that reality. Bardbarian isnt one of those either, unfortunately, but its an ample effort.
