News:: Blizzard previews the year ahead for Overwatch

Fresh off his marathon yule log stream over the holiday break, game director Jeff Kaplan is back with a recap of the last year for Overwatch and what's coming up in 2018. "We are well along the path on [introducing the 27th hero]," he says, adding that there are "some great new maps in the works."

Kaplan doesn't delve into anything particularly out there or unexpected. The topics discussed today are more of a continuation of Blizzard's work over the past year, so don't expect any big reveals yet.

With that in mind, here's what he touches on:

  • The team will continue fine-tuning competitive play with fixes and tweaks with each new season. "As the year goes on, we want to evolve our plan for what competitive play looks like over the long term of Overwatch," according to Kaplan. That could mean it will eventually "take a different shape or form," but that's "still to be determined."
  • The "next iteration" of the lore-based Uprising event. "We have a lot of really big ideas."
  • Finally, "a ton of new content" will be added to the basic (non-event) loot boxes.

News:: Microsoft stops selling the Xbox One Kinect adapter

You knew Kinect peripherals weren't long for this world when Microsoft stopped producing the Kinect in October, but it's still a sad day. The company has stopped making the Xbox Kinect Adapter that lets Xbox One S, Xbox One X and Windows PC users attach the depth-sensing camera without the presence of the original Xbox One's proprietary port. Microsoft wants to focus its efforts on "higher fan-requested gaming accessories," a spokesperson told Polygon. In short: there wasn't exactly rampant demand for an adapter to support a peripheral that had effectively been declared dead.

News:: PUBG Corp is looking to bring the hit game to 'every platform'

In a recent interview with InvenGlobal, the CEO of PUBG Corp, CH Kim, laid out some of the plans the team has for the future of the franchise. Yes, that is correct; franchise. PUBG isn't going to stay as just a game if they can maintain the popularity around the title.

The first interesting bit, though, concerns PUBG eventually coming to other platforms. When pressed about whether or not a PS4 version is in the works, Kim stated, "As it’s going to be an exclusive title on Xbox One for some time, we’d like to focus on completing the Xbox One PUBG for now. If we have the opportunity, the final goal would be to launch the title on every platform." A Switch version would actually be pretty awesome for this game, despite the console probably dying after a single round.

The biggest reason that PUBG isn't on a rival platform (apart from the timed exclusivity for Xbox One) is that Sony doesn't have an early-access style storefront. "Early Access on Steam and Game Preview on Xbox One are like pre-release," Kim stressed, "so they don’t have a restriction on quality. However, PS is very strict about this. There were cases where a game took 6 months more to launch even when it was already completed." I suppose this is ignoring the deluge of garbage getting on Sony's storefront (Life of Black Tiger), but seeing as how those games are "finished," I guess Sony just won't allow early-access style content.

As for what the company may eventually grow into beyond this game, Kim shared, "I’d like PUBG to become a universal media franchise based on the game. We want to take part in diverse industries including Esports, movies, drama, cartoons, animation, and more. In fact, we received a couple of love calls from a number of developers in Hollywood and Netflix. Our dream is to build a new game-based culture through various ways like this, and have the lead of that culture."

As groan inducing as that sounds, it looks like we haven't seen the last of PUBG. Hopefully all of these distractions from the main title don't lead to a dip in quality going forward.

I’d like PUBG to become a universal media franchise,” CH Kim, the CEO of PUBG Corp. [InvenGlobal]

News:: StarCraft's Firebat is playable in Heroes of the Storm

The veteran Firebat joins the game as a ranged warrior who can spread oil on the battlefield, charge forward with jet propulsion, and even call in an air-dropped bunker that teammates can clamber into.

He's playable now through January 8 on the PTR leading up to his release in the live game.

News:: Arc System Works looking forward to new year, will hold anniversary event in 2019

Anime fighting game developers Arc System Works have released a video sending gratitude and good wishes to their fans at the start of 2018, which is set to be one of the company's most successful years in some time.

In the light-hearted, slightly goofy vid, ArcSys CEO Minoru Kidooka, COO Daisuke Ishiwatari, and Development Director Toshimichi Mori, thank fans for their support throughout 2017 and speak of the company's growth from a small, three-person studio to the industry giants behind such titles as BlazBlue, Guilty Gear and Persona 4: Arena. As part of the company's 30th anniversary, ArcSys will hold a celebratory "festival" in May 2019, although no details are given as to what this event will entail.

2018 is set to be a grand year for the studio. Having recently opened offices in the U.S, ArcSys will no doubt be preparing for the release of the fantastic Dragon Ball FighterZ on January 26, while continuing work on crossover title BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, expected to release later this year.

News:: Microsoft stops production of Kinect adapter needed to use Kinect on new Xbox models

Microsoft has officially delivered the coup de grâce to the Kinect. Even though the Xbox division has placed an increasingly diminished emphasis on its motion control peripheral in recent years, the final step in separating entirely happened today.

Microsoft confirmed to Polygon that it has ceased production of the Kinect USB adapter. This device is necessary to use Kinect on Xbox One S and Xbox One X models. Only the original Xbox One featured a dedicated Kinect port on the back of the machine; the console revisions only have standard USB ports that require the adapter to use Kinect.

Because of the port changes, Microsoft ran a promotion through March 2017 where it offered a free Kinect adapter to anyone who had an original Xbox One, a Kinect, and an Xbox One S. For anyone who didn't meet that criteria, Microsoft also sold the adapter at a price of $40. However, as Polygon notes, it hasn't been available for months now. The only means of acquiring one is through third-party sellers, and most of them are asking several times the original price.

In the confirmation, a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon "After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10" and added that the adapter "will no longer be available." It's less of a surprise and more of an inevitability. Still, long time coming as this was, today is the day we have final confirmation that Microsoft has divested itself entirely of Kinect.

News:: Nintendo's shooting for 20 million more Switch sales for the next fiscal year

Nintendo Switch: People seem to like it! It appears as if Nintendo will rocket past its first fiscal year sales projections. Investors were originally told that Switch sales were estimated at 10 million in its first 12 months at market; recent reports indicate Nintendo has already hit that mark with three months left in the fiscal year.

On the back of a strong debut, Nintendo has even loftier goals for the Switch's second year. Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told Japanese newspaper Kyoto Shimbun (and as reported by WCCF Tech) that the forecast for Switch sales in fiscal year 2018 is 20 million units. That's a substantial increase over the projected 14 million it'll end 2017 with.

However, this number goes hand-in-hand with the news that Nintendo plans to manufacture a minimum of 25 million Switches in 2018. Even though the adoption rate feels healthy, it's quite evidently hamstrung by production limitations. Nintendo expects to both make and sell a heck of a lot more Switches next year.

News:: What video reviews do you want to see this year?

Last year, without sounding too obnoxious, was the start of a new era for the Destructoid YouTube channel. In July of 2017 we'd see the birth #babyfingers and Lyle McDouchebag's new show Pregame Discharge. However, it was also the return of video reviews after myself more or less taking a crack at them.

So, since September last year, me and a few fellow Destructoid writers have collaborated to bring you video reviews on a month-to-month basis. But, admittedly, the video team outside of Pregame Discharge isn't exactly large. So far, it only consists of me, Enthusiast Gaming's Eric Weichhart, and a closet full of skeletons...

News:: King of Fighters XIV to be supported in 2018, the 40th anniversary of SNK

King of Fighters XIV didn't make the splash that SNK intended in the pro scene, but they still seem proud of it nonetheless. In addition to a massive visual overhaul they've also peppered in various bits of DLC, worked on the netcode, and provided various fixes and the like since its August 2016 launch.

The folks over at 4Gamer decided to check in with Yasuyuki Oda, Game Department Vice Manager and 1st Studio Producer for SNK, who stated that things were going swimmingly with the series and that this year, XIV will be getting a new update on top of a 40th anniversary celebration of SNK as a company.

Oda lays out his plans for 2018, stating: “Thanks to everyone, in 2018 we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the SNK brand. On the game side, we have new title releases and announcements for both consoles and apps (I cannot say anything yet!), and we are also planning to update The King of Fighters XIV, which is available now. First, the King of Fighters manga will start on New Year’s Day! We are also preparing 40th anniversary commemoration goods, which will be gradually released mainly through the SNK Online Shop. Please look forward to SNK in 2018!”

Sure thing. Now if I could just find more people to play it with locally.

News:: Reddit reunites man with lost Nintendo Switch

Last week, a Reddit user lost his Nintendo Switch while partaking in some International travel, but was reunited with his beloved thanks to some honesty, luck and that hive of humanity, Reddit.

Reddit user "Pizzaboxman" (or "Juan"), lost his Switch unit after it slipped from his bag on a bus between connecting flights at Frankfurt International Airport. After boarding his plane and realising the console was gone, Juan was pretty damn blue, as you would be. Upon arrival in Madrid, Juan posted about the missing console on Reddit, asking if anyone had found the Switch, noting that this method of regaining it had a "0.000001%" chance of working.

Amazingly, he was contacted in only a few hours time by user "itchybun" whose friend had indeed found the little lost console. After correctly answering numerous questions in order to ascertain that the unit was in fact his, it has been confirmed (via an interview with Kotaku) that Juan will be meeting up with itchybun's pal to get his 55-hour Breath of the Wild save back... Oh, and the device it's attached to.

News:: Sumo Digital has acquired the EVE Valkyrie studio

New year, new beginnings. Late last year, CCP Newcastle, the studio primarily responsible for EVE Valkyrie, was set to be sold off by CCP. Now, on the first business day of 2018, we know where that team will land.

Sumo Digital announced today that it has acquired what was formerly CCP Newcastle. It's the fourth studio for Sumo Digital; three of them are in the UK and one is in India. No financial details about the transaction were shared, but 34 employees are making the switch and Owen O'Brien will remain in charge of the Newcastle branch.

Even though Sumo Digital isn't quite a household name in video games, it's the type of developer who has played a support role on a bunch of titles. Recently, it has done work on Hitman, Forza Motorsport 7, and LittleBigPlanet 3 (as well as developing and self-publishing Snake Pass).

However, it's the near future where Sumo Digital will likely receive its most recognition to date. It's one of four developers at work on Crackdown 3, and it's the sole studio (that we know about) that's tackling Dead Island 2. There's big stuff on the horizon for Sumo Digital. Now 34 former CCP employees are along for the ride.

News:: Super Mario Odyssey is now one of the fastest-growing games in the speedrunning community

Mario games are just plain fun to speedrun. Super Mario 3D World quickly became a favorite of mine, but I also partake in plenty of side-by-side speedrun contests with a friend in pretty much every game in the series.

Every 3D iteration has that special spark, but Super Mario Odyssey spurred tons of people into action since its launch. Although it may not seem like much, Odyssey just logged its 1,000th speedrun submission within two months, making it the most submitted game to date within that timeframe. It's also currently the most active game right now on the site (right behind it is Super Mario 64, even still!).

As I've said Mario games really have an impact on the community, as the two most popular speedrun titles of all time include Super Mario Sunshine and 64.

News:: Fortnite's new limited-time mode quietly enters the ring

Fortnite is getting a new, limited-time game mode that involves silencers! Running from January 5th until the 8th, the mode (called "Sneaky Silencers") will force players to utilize stealth tactics over brute force to score a win. All traps will be disabled, weapons will be restricted to silenced SMGs and pistols and the bush disguise will have an increased drop rate, so you'll have more chances to get your bush game on!

There will be a new pistol in chests to coincide with this mode. It will only drop as an Epic or Legendary gun, so you won't see it that often. The gun will arrive on January 2nd to get people for the game mode. Your Fortnite client won't require an update, according to Epic, so you'll be set to go when the mode enters rotation.

News:: The best mobile games

Mobile gaming has come a long way. Over the past few years we've gone from simple distractions like Snake, Words With Friends and Doodle Jump to full-on narrative experiences crafted specifically for Android and iOS devices. What's more, at least a few traditional console game developers have shifted entirely to mobile at this point, and, in a bit of a reversal, they've ported their games to consoles. By 2012, game-design toolsets like Unity and Unreal made a charming indie designed for mobile devices indistinguishable from one you'd play on a PlayStation or Xbox. As such, for the purposes of this list, we're focusing on games that have been released within the past five years.

News:: Shenmue III is allegedly still on track for 2018

A game as big as Shenmue III has a lot of moving parts. Several studios are working on the project and helping it come to life alongside of Shenmue father Yu Suzuki and his team at Ys Net, and that includes Shibuya Productions -- a company that's handling marketing and publishing alongside of Sony.

Its president and founder, Cedric Biscay, has also recently confirmed that Shemue III is still on track for 2018, noting that the year will be great "with the [release] of Shenmue III on PS4 and PC," teasing "many other surprises" that may or may not have anything to do with Shenmue.

As a Kickstarter project people are right to worry a bit -- especially given how many of them have failed, gone under completely, or delivered a shoddy product -- but with so many moving parts and so much optimism, I think we will end up seeing this in 2018, even if it's in December.

Details have emerged about the Japanese Special Edition for Sega's dramatic war sequel Valkyria Chronicles 4.

The "10th Anniversary Memorial Box" comes with a 72-page book, featuring art from all titles in the series. The 10th Anniversary set will retail in Japan for around ¥13,000 -- roughly $120 -- but there is unfortunately no news as to whether the set will be localised for the game's release in North America and Europe. Valkyria Chronicles 4 launches in Japan March 21 on PS4, and on the Switch in Summer. It will follow in the West on PS4, Xbox One and Switch sometime later in 2018.

News:: Doom SNES was built with a 'hacked-up StarFox cartridge'

Randy Linden has seen some shit.

He's worked on Dragon's Lair, the infamous Home Alone and Where's Waldo NES, the emulator Bleem, and even Doom SNES. Gaming Reinvented caught up with him recently to allow him to share a few development stories around the campfire, and one in particular that called to me was his journey to create Doom on the Super Nintendo.

Seeing it as a challenge first and foremost, Linden and the team crafted the development hardware from a "hacked-up StarFox cartridge," mostly so they could utilize the SuperFX chip. The process also involved splicing both modified SNES and Amiga controllers, and a lengthy toolkit that had to be written before development even began.

Linden notes that due to the ROM size they nearly filled up the cart as best they could (there were 16 bytes free in total), but were unable to include as many levels at they'd like. He also reminds us that SuperScope, Mouse, and XBand modem support were officially supported. While a lot of people assume Nintendo would have been hell to work with on this fairly violent project, Linden recalls that as long as the blood wasn't red, they were good.

Hearing backstories like these fill in the gaps between my visit to the local video store and popping a game into my console are among my favorite parts of my gaming experience.

News:: Nick Valdez's personal picks for best games of 2017

I took so, so many Ls this year. I mean, the world did overall but 2017 was particularly unkind to me in a bunch of ways. There's no need to unpack all that stuff right at the intro, but you should know going in that the choices I've made here are pretty much a reflection of the life I led this past year.

Point of all of this is, at least the games this year were pretty damn good. I couldn't really think of a "top" contender, but I do wish my list included some of cooler selections I've seen other folks post online. I'm a pretty simple person to please with less and less time available, so these five games here were what I could remember playing and loved almost every minute doing so.

News:: Hideaki Itsuno says his new project, which could be anything from Rival Schools to Devil May Cry 5, is 'now under climax'

Hideaki Itsuno is so prolific that it's tough to list all of his accomplishments. He's worked on the Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma series, as well as Power Stone, Rival Schools, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and SMT: Nocturne. Right there you have some of the all-time greats, and his first project since 2013 is almost ready to be revealed.

Since last year he's been buzzing about it, but 2017 came and went without a word from Itsuno. Addressing the wait, he took to twitter to announce: "Happy new year! I am sorry that I can not present a new project last year. The development of the project is now under climax. I am making a great game so please expect it."

While this would normally be an innocuous sort of update, the fact that this project is in its final stages is interesting as hell. If it's already near complete we could see a major announcement with a soon-ish release date as they polish it up.

News:: 'Need for Speed: Payback' to add online free roaming mode

EA and Ghost Games know Need for Speed: Payback got a rather cold reception on launch, and they're continuing to rehabilitate its image -- in this case, by bringing back a feature from the previous game. The creators have revealed that they're adding an online free roaming mode to the game sometime in 2018, echoing a feature from the 2015 Need for Speed release. You can technically roam around now while waiting for a lobby to fill up, but this should let you drive to your heart's content.

News:: Zelda: Breath of the Wild re-enters the Top Ten of the UK Charts

Looks like a lot of people unwrapped shiny new Switch consoles this Christmas, as the following days saw adventure title Zelda: Breath of the Wild leap ten places to re-enter the UK's Top Ten. Splatoon 2 also made Top Forty re-entry, now sitting at number 21.

Apart from this development, it was business as usually for the Top Five, which didn't budge an inch in the week between Christmas Day and the start of the New Year. Super Mario Odyssey managed to haul itself up another spot, while racers Gran Turismo: Sport and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe pushed back into the big leagues.

As January high-street sales come into effect and Christmas gift vouchers do the rounds, not much movement can be expected in the Top Five until 2018's first heavy-hitters -- namely Monster Hunter: World and Dragon Ball FighterZ -- arrive on the scene.

Regardless, given this week's sales boost for Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda: BOTW, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2, the UK clearly just got a bevy of new Switch owners.

News:: Ico, Shadow of the Colossus director potentially teases his next project

If you haven't been keeping up with Fumito Ueda, he's been a pretty busy man. Over the course of a decade and a half he directed Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, a pedigree worth retiring over.

He's still at it though, and after leaving Sony he's back with his independent studio genDESIGN which is presumably crafting its first game. This teaser by way of the studio's official website might be our first look at that project -- an image that contains a girl on an altar (possibly a princess of some sort), and possibly a beast (or just a hairy giant man).

It's not much to go by but it seems like Ueda hasn't lost his touch, and is still content with getting weird with dreary backdrop to augment said weirdness. I wonder if it'll be a little more confined this time now that they don't have the backing of a major studio. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a five hour downloadable joint.

News:: New Splatoon 2 weapon to celebrate Japan's 'Kakizome'

A new weapon has turned up in Nintendo's multiplayer shooter, Splatoon 2, added to celebrate Kakizome, a Japanese tradition based on writing calligraphy at the start of the new year.

The Octobrush Nouveau has been released for January 2, typically the day when Kakizome celebrations take place. The new tool is a variant on the Octobrush from the original Splatoon (which was also released in alignment with the Kakizome). This new variant comes equipped with Beakon sub and Tenta Missiles Special.

News:: CES 2018: What to expect

It's January, which means that Las Vegas, or the bit that pretends not to be Las Vegas for tax reasons, will play host to CES. The Consumer Electronics Show is the event that kicks off the technology world's annual calendar, and 2018 will see thousands of companies descend upon Nevada to show off their wares. Many will claim to have the solution to whatever problem you may have, but we'll be on the ground to peer through their flashy promises.

If last year's CES had a theme, then it was an attempt to broaden its horizons beyond smartphones, tablets and TVs. Technology companies have mined every last drop of good ideas from the traditional gadget world, which is why many chose to try something new. Our Best of CES winners from last year included a smart bra-style breast pump, a self-balancing motorcycle and smart tech that will help farmers. CES will set the tone for the next year in technology, so while we make our way there, here's a quick run-through of all the things we're likely to find in the desert.
