News::Metro: Last Light Review | Digital Chumps

Digital Chumps: "A solid, true sequel to Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light has some flaws, but they're over-matched by the positives that make Last Light an excellent FPS experience."

News::Sanctum 2 Review | OXM

OXM: "Sanctum 2 does lack refinement in some ways, though. The in-game visuals are a bit rugged, plus the comic bookstyle loading-screen story sequences lack intrigue. An even bigger concern is some environmental glitches: a couple of times, we were knocked back into areas that we couldnt escape from without triggering suicide. While the game feels rough around the edges, the core is so entertaining that such flaws dont dominate the experience. Whether you play solo or with pals, solving Sanctum 2s many challenges proves deeply absorbing."

News::Sonic is a pirate! Covers for Sonic Universe #55

As much as it pains me to say, Sonic and Mega Man's fun times together in "Worlds Collide" won't last forever. But hopefully enough new readers will be ready and willing to stick around for what lies ahead for both heroes.

The first issue of Sonic Universe following "Worlds Collide" will be #55, a high-seas voyage starring Blaze and Marine from Sonic Rush Adventure, along with Amy Rose, Cream, and Sonic the Fighters tag team Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite. This new "Pirate Plunder Panic" arc is a little extra special because it is not penned by main series writer Ian Flynn but rather by frequent Sonic penciler Tracy Yardley! -- mind the necessary exclamation mark!

This isn't the first time Tracy has handled a Sonic story: "A few years ago, I wrote 3 issues of the old Sonic X comic that Archie had published. And I wrote the 'Babylon Rising' story arc featured in Sonic Universe #33-36." But shouldn't he be worried about bringing shame upon the House of Flynn!? "His eye may be ever-watchful, but I don't think he's ever judging," Tracy states. "Actually, he's always been very supportive and enthusiastic when I write stories for the Sonic books. I go to him to make sure I keep the continuity correct and to get his opinion on what I'm doing. Ian really is a fantastic guy."

Oh... alright. And here I pictured Ian as a silver-tongued mogul who manipulates his minions to do his bidding. I may not be familiar with Tracy's past written works, but if he's got the support of both Ian and Archie editor Paul Kaminski, this ought to be a fresh yet fun read.

News::Super Metroid is on the Wii U Virtual Console for $0.30

If you have a Wii U, run, don't walk to your GamePad and pick up Super Metroid on the eShop today for $0.30. A timeless classic, Super Metroid helped cement the franchise as one of the true platforming and exploration greats, and is one of my all time favorite games.

The discount is a result of the Virtual Console anniversary sale, and will feature Yoshi (NES) next, then it will close out with Donkey Kong (NES). If you already picked it up at Club Nintendo recently, your coins have been refunded. European owners, you'll be getting an "optimized 50hz" version of the game rather than the 60hz version.

While you're waiting for the game to download, you can rock out to this amazing Super Metroid medley by Jake Kaufman.

News::Pop Cults - Eador: Masters of the Broken World Review

Richard from PopCults.com writes "To reiterate, Masters of the Broken World is not a bad game, but you definitely need to be a dedicated TBS fan to get into it. I would love to finish the game, and I may revisit it when I have more time, but it requires a lot of time from the player to get into the game. For TBS fans, this is a very good thing. TBS games that engage the player this much are usually well worth the time and offer tons of playability. But the amount of time needed to really delve into the game is what will turn off the majority of gamers, even some TBS fans, to the game. This makes Masters of the Broken World a game that very few gamers will really get into. It limits the appeal to a strongly dedicated gaming niche."

News::A remake of the Amiga's Putty Squad is coming this year

I'm not sure how many of you out there remember the 1992 Amiga game Putty Squad, but an enhanced remake is on the way this year. Specifically, it's coming to the PS3, Xbox 360, Vita, Wii U, (takes a breath) 3DS, and even Windows 8 this Summer. The new and improved Putty Squad boasts enhanced visuals, new gameplay, and free DLC.

I never had the chance to play Putty Squad, but this doesn't look bad at all -- I'll definitely be paying attention when this thing comes out. I'm no stranger to the Amiga in general though, and would love to see more HD classic ports like this in the future.

News::Anomaly 2 Review: Twice as Much Anomalies - Pixel Related

When 11 Bit Studios came out with Anomaly: Warzone Earth a few years back, it seemed as though they had struck upon a formula that would lead them assuredly to success. Refining the ideas in the original release, by the time the game came to the Xbox Live Arcade it was near perfection. Almost unfortunately Anomaly 2 feels less like a sequel and more like a what if scenario, where most of the games aspects have been given split personalities, instead of upgrades. The reason thats only almost unfortunate is that this new game, while distinctly different in several regards, still retains enough of the originals good qualities in other words, this game is really good...

News::Metro: Last Light isnt perfect, but FPS devs should pay attention | ARS

ARS: Yet after calling the game out for its missteps, I still walk away from it pretty delighted by the entire ride. I loved the wild beast battles and the game's constant visual trickery. I endured the slow first third and a few ho-hum plot clichés to get to some serious plot-and-action meat, particularly in a few sequences that borrow both shamelessly and tastefully from Half-Life (you'll see). I rarely threw my keyboard and mouse at anything in frustration, but then I didn't pony up $5 to unlock the game's hardest difficulty as DLC (gross).

PCA:Following in the footsteps of 2010's Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light improves upon the gameplay of its predecessor without destroying what made the series great in the first place: the setting. News::Kairo Review | ComboCaster

Something common in this type of games is the lack of an objective, a line conductor to tell us whether we are on track or not. But it is also showing that these are not really games, but examples of interactive media that give us the possibility to freely explore an environment and the transformations that our actions cause in the world. The world of Kairo is made from several interconnected locations and strange architecture. The story is never explained, is a world about which we know nothing much at the beginning and at the end, which further enhances the mystery that surrounds it. The only goal is just exploring and solving some puzzles. Each room has a puzzle that is usually necessary to solve to continue the game and usually involve manipulating an object in the world of Kairo. It can be something as simple as dragging a block to something more complex such as recognizing patterns, but in general are not very challenging.

News::PluggedIn - Star Trek Review

Games with movie tie-ins don't have a great track record. They always offer a few character elements and a little story action fans can buy into, but they tend to fall short when it comes to the overall gaming experience. So after I broke out my Vulcan ear tips and pinned on my favorite plastic Federation pocket emblem, PluggedIn - I set my phaser to "wary" as I ripped through the shrink-wrap around Star Trek. The sensor readings that soon started coming in let me know that the game does fit snuggly into the newly rebooted Trekkie canon. Everything takes place between the events of director J.J. Abrams' 2009 blockbuster flick Star Trek and his new 2013 Star Trek Into Darkness. Moviegoers will remember that the planet Vulcan was demolished during the last go-round. So here in the game, the emotionless, green-blooded Vulcans whip up a high-tech thingamajig they call the Helios device to help them quickly create a new home.

GamesRadar - Build towers and hope they're strong enough to keep enemy hordes at bay. Thats the gist of a tower defense game, and when 11 Bit Studios released Anomaly Warzone Earth back in 2011, it turned the genre upside down. Instead of building up towers, you were knocking them down. Continuing this tower offense format, Anomaly 2 looks familiar but expands on what made the first one so much fun to play. New units, morphing abilities, and the addition of an asymmetrical multiplayer mode are just some of the reasons why Anomaly 2 is an impressive sequel.
