News::Four Sided Fantasy does both sidescrolling and screen wrapping

Way back in the day, most side-view took place on a single screen at a time, and often moving off the edge of one side caused the player to reappear on the other. (See: Joust, Asteroids, Mario Bros.) Then Super Mario Bros. came along and revolutionized platformers by introducing long, continuous levels and a camera that followed every step of the way.

Four Sided Fantasy leverages both of those 2D camera ideas, putting the player in an expansive world, but with the unique power to freeze the screen and use old school wrapping to go places that would be otherwise inaccessible. The idea was explored in designer Logan Fieth's previous game The Fourth Wall, but Four Sided Fantasy will have an expanded scope and more work put into the visuals, which make beautiful use of color.

Four Sided Fantasy is currently running a Kickstarter campaign with an initial funding goal of $35,000. It is also seeking approval on Steam Greenlight.

News::RefleX Review [Capsule Computers]

Christopher Chu from Capsule Computers wrote: RefleX is the second chapter to one of the most beloved Japanese shooting trilogies, The Tale Of ALLTYNEX. The game seamlessly provides a great shooting experience through the usage of intense gameplay, interesting mechanics, and strongly crafted levels. The title is well-known around the world as one of the best indie shmup titles, and that recognition is well-deserved.

News::DYNABOT: The Robo Marble is About to Change the Endless Runner Genre

"Im kind of surprised that Sega hasnt made a decent Sonic game in the endless runner genre. Wait, no Im not. Sega has seemed incapable of capturing the particular magic that made the original games work, and now, it may be too late. Thats because I just watched the trailer for DYNABOT: The Robo Marble, and I think Sonic would face some heavy competition in the genre even if Sega could put together a decent game now. Now, I typically do not care about endless runners one bit. Not. One. Bit. Still, I decided to give Dynabots trailer a look, and Im pretty happy I did. The game looks really solid, taking a lot of the ideas I liked in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and applying them to the endless runner genre. The platforming looks good, and the neat loop-the-loops, upside down tracks, and enemies all give it a bit more variety than Im used to seeing from the genre..." I've seen quite a few people sigh at Hearthstone's recent iPad port rollout, because currently the game is only available in a select few regions, leaving a couple of major countries out of the loop (like the US).

But it's actually pretty easy to download it on your iPad in minutes, using a simple region change method that you can do entirely within your device.

News::The Last Tinker: City of Colors Preview Charming Beauty I The Koalition

David Jagneaux of The Koalition writes: The word "charming" gets thrown around a lot lately when describing indie games - usually in the form of a thinly veiled insult. "Oh yeah, the game was pretty fun I guess, it got boring quickly, but it was really charming!" Everyone's guilty of it: you know the game is made by a small team, and it's a lot better than anything you could ever do, so even though it isn't that great of a game, you throw out a vague word that can be construed as a compliment - charming.

News::Review: Betrayer

Awash on a beach amidst scattered boxes and waterlogged wood, Betrayer drew me into its chiaroscuro world immediately. Behind me was a blinding, blown out whiteness and an impassable expanse of sea. Ahead of me was intrigue, a mysterious red figure on the horizon, and a state of discontent.

Oh, it starts out strong, before I ended up feeling, well, betrayed. The unsettling, moody sense of exploration began getting replaced by typical, "gamey" systems and way more first-person shooting than I was hoping for. Betrayer is frustrating for its flashes of brilliance undermined by a death grip on conventions.

News::Hardline 013: Amazon Fire TV, heists coming to GTA, and too much PAX?

Did I end the last episode of Hardline by saying we'd be back a week later if we weren't murdered and left in a ditch somewhere? And then we went two weeks without a follow-up?

Well, we aren't all dead -- just on the inside -- but we did bring on Destructoid contributor Brett Makedonski and Hardline producer Bill Zoeker to fill in for this recording.

Topics this week include April Fools' Day bringing out creativity for 24 hours, the Amazon Fire TV, Uncharted writer Amy Hennig joining Dead Space maker Visceral as creative director on an untitled Star Wars game, Square rethinking its JRPGs, Phil Spencer becoming head of Xbox, GTA Online adding heists, game jams gone wrong, and whether or not a fourth PAX is worthwhile.

Unfortunately, we've had some temporary technical issues getting this week's episode on YouTube, but we didn't want to make you guys wait for the podcast version. For the audio-only episode, you can subscribe on iTunes and RSS, or download directly here.

News::Losing my VRginity to: Simulation!

There are many different views on the potential uses of virtual reality (VR). Its rebirth as a modern experience lead by in-home entertainment is just one opportunity, but there are many more that have had a great deal of exposition already. The out-of-home experience, including that of the traditional arcade format, is an area which has made strides in bringing VR technology to a mainstream audience that would otherwise have been impossible, and KWPs Kevin Williams has been instrumental in this process.

News::Impressions: Luftrausers makes too much sense on the Vita

Luftrausers is perfect on the Vita in the same way Vlambeer's Super Crate Box was perfect on the Vita. It's "perfect for the Vita" because it's a great game. While either title, with their minimal arcade sensibilities "make sense" on a portable (with buttons) for their quickness, you're not likely to play Luftrausers for just ten minutes on your commute.

You're more likely to miss your stop because you mashed "up" to launch, craving one more run. This time you'll do better. This time you'll kill that blimp.

News::The best stuff on Destructoid this week [4/5]

[We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.]

Yes, I missed the last two weeks for various reasons, but the checks are in the mail and I'm trying to make it up. Please don't take my baby from me. She's all I have. This every other weekend thing is already depressing enough. I can tell she hates coming over, too, away from her friends and her regular everyday life, but what am I supposed to do? Give her up?
