News:: A big, dumb Star Fox Zero and Guard retrospective: Two years later

[Zalno recounts the two years since Star Fox's apparent swan song on the Wii U released. People like me, who hold out unlikely hope for the regaled-but-troubled series to someday return in good form. Unlike how Zero panned out, which was rather unfortunate. Still, seeing as it was Star Fox's last major entry, it's worth revisiting the game so that we can hopefully look to the future of Star Fox. ~Marcel]

I originally planned to have this blog out last weekend, which would've been two years to the day Star Fox Zero was released in Japan. Unfortunately, I was a bit pre-occupied and missed the boat. Better late than never, I guess. Can you believe it’s been only two years since Star Fox Zero was released on the Wii U? Two years since the first entry in the much beloved Star Fox franchise in a decade was released. Two whole years since said game was met with a resounding “ehhhhhh” by fans and critics alike. But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.

News:: 'Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon' summons 8-bit 'Castlevania' charm

Japanese developer Inti Creates has lifted the lid on Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon at this year's BitSummit -- an annual, Kyoto-based celebration of the finest indie games. Curse of the Moon is a classic 8-bit follow-up to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, originally promised as a Kickstarter reward if certain stretch goals were met.

News:: The Final Fantasy VII Remake will allegedly be released by 2023

While it's far from confirmed, I think we all could have expected that the Final Fantasy VII Remake is nowhere near done.

After hearing that the project has switched hands at least once and the team is basically re-imagining the entire premise, now, according to a behind closed doors conversation between producer Yoshinori Kitase and development lead Naoki Hamaguchi at the Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary celebration event, we have a guesstimated release window. It's...drumroll...2023, the 35th anniversary of Final Fantasy. Hamaguchi seemingly finds this unacceptable, so the team is working to have it out earlier, but that could be a very probably reality.

The transcript was obtained by someone attending the event, and we've reached out to Square Enix to corroborate the statement (and if they could have been referring to "all of the episodes" in this episodic release), and to get a possible updated release window. For now, that window could be "by 2023." If they don't offer a comment we'll probably get some sort of update during Square Enix's pre-recorded E3 video.

I think I speak for a large portion of onlookers by saying: "2023 is fine if it's done right, and could possibly get rid of the whole episodic angle."

News:: Breath of the Wild's Master Works will be heading West with a new title

Released late last year in Japan, Breath of the Wild - Master Works was a collection of design documents around 2017's smash hit that included art work, developer interviews and a whole lot more. It basically followed in the vein of things like Hyrule Historia and Arts & Artifacts, just with a focus on a single game instead of the whole franchise. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics, that book is now heading West under a brand new title.

Dubbed Breath of the Wild - Creating a Champion, the book is currently up for pre-order on Amazon (US and Canada) with a price of $39.99/$53.99 CDN. The official description for the book reads:

News:: The best moms in video games

Last week I served up a list of some of the worst mothers in video game history. Bad moms are pretty easy to pluck out of this medium of entertainment since they're so infrequently depicted in a positive light. That being said, it wouldn't be right to let this Mother's Day go by without also compiling a list of some of the best moms video games have to offer.

Full disclosure: a few of the moms that came to mind for this particular list are from pretty recent titles. That being said, there are some spoilers for both God of War and Yakuza 6 towards the bottom of this list so proceed at your own risk.

News:: My mom is awesome except for that one time she tried to murder us all with Kirby's Avalanche

I don’t say this nearly enough, but my mom is the absolute best. She’s simply wonderful. She’s easy to shop for, she doesn’t have time for any of that emotional bullshit, and she always knows how to make her kids feel special. For my 18th birthday, she drove for more than an hour to get me an Arby’s roast beef sandwich paired with McDonald’s french fries because she knew that was my favorite meal. On a completely unrelated note, I’m now obese, pre-diabetic, and stuck eating broccoli five days a week.

What I love about her most is how she’s always been supportive of my hobbies. I’ve been a gamer since before I started school. For every birthday, Christmas, and occasional Easter, she would be there with a new video game for my brother and me. When I was 15, she and my Dad surprised me with Dreamcast and my own television, breaking me free from the constraints of a shared console household. When I joined Destructoid, she was so excited after I told her what it was until she found out what it pays.

Through thick and thin, happy days and severe depression, she’s been there for me, supporting the crazy ideas I have that I’m far too lazy to actually take seriously. I know she would never, ever hurt me; except for that one time she tried to kill us all with Kirby’s Avalanche.

News:: Gaming through the years with my mom

For kids growing up in the ‘90s, it was pretty rare that your parents would ever play video games. Sitcoms had jokes about, “The Nintendos” and media around the time demonized the medium, making it seem like a child’s plaything. I never really understood that mentality, especially since both of my parents played video games. This is a Mother’s Day article, though, so I’m going to focus on a bunch of the gaming memories I have with my mom.

News:: Review in Progress: Conan Exiles

Mention "Conan the Barbarian" to me and I'm more likely to think of a certain redheaded late-night comedian in cosplay than I am to think of Robert E. Howard's iconic savage. Similarly, talk to me about "survival games" and my only real point of reference would be quite a bit of time spent with DayZ back when it was a janky ArmA II mod.

While this means I might not exactly be the most qualified person to tackle Funcom's new open-world survival game based on Conan's Hyborian-age adventures, I can tell when I'm having a good time, and that's definitely been the case with Conan Exiles so far.

News:: Monster Hunter movie, starring Milla Jovovich, goes into production in September

From the star-studded pages of Hollywood-mag Variety, Constantin Films have announced that the movie of Capcom's suddenly-favourite-franchise Monster Hunter will begin production this September.

Directed by game-movie mogul Paul W.S. Anderson - of Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat fame - the Monster Hunter adaptation will start shooting in Cape Town, South Africa at the year's end, with a budget of around $60 million. Anderson is credited as writer and director, as the idea has been a passion project of his for some years now.

Also on board to star in the film is one of Anderson's regular faces, Milla Jovovich. The Ukrainian star previously played Alice in the Resident Evil series, and is also known for her roles in Luc Besson's sci-fi epic The Fifth Element and vampire flick Ultraviolet.

News:: Boss Golf has all the charm of the '90s 'Tycoon' games

"Tycoon" style games used to be all the rage in the late ‘90s. After Rollercoaster Tycoon proved the formula was popular, various knock-offs flooded the casual PC market and made it incredibly easy to pick up a tycoon game for your preferred hobby. I distinctly remember things like Ski Resort Tycoon and Airport Tycoon, but one of the better riffs that appealed to me was Sid Meier’s Sim Golf.

I had been introduced to the sport of golf from a friend of mine and seeing it combined with that particular gaming craze was too much to pass up. In true Sim fashion, the game let you create your own golfer and then set them out on a course hand made by you. I remember creating some devious courses, with lots of sand bunkers and stupidly placed ponds that would have caused even Arnold Palmer to curse a blue streak.

While tycoon games haven’t exactly disappeared over the years, their prominence has diminished. We’ve seen pseudo-come backs with Planet Coaster and Parkitect, but where is the "Golf Tycoon" title? Enter Boss Golf, a game currently in alpha that looks to recapture the glory that was Sim Golf for a new generation.

News:: 'Destiny 2' puzzle leads to a real-world reward

Bungie is well-known for including cryptic references in its games, but it's not often those references lead to real-world gains. A massive team of gamers investigating an area in Destiny 2's new Warmind expansion decoded an elaborate cipher puzzle that, in the end, produced a message with geographical coordinates in upstate New York (conveniently, near the home of Warmind developer Vicarious Visions). That, in turn, led to a very tangible prize that included not only coins (one for each person who visits), but a life-size replica of the Valkyrie weapon from the game -- the only example you'll find outside of Bungie and Vicarious Visions.

News:: Valve switches on Steam Controller's mobile connection in beta

Valve's latest beta client activates the Steam Controller's Bluetooth Low Energy function -- a necessary feature if you want to use the gamepad to play on a mobile device in the near future. If you'll recall, the company recently announced that Steam Link will be able beam games to the dedicated iOS and Android apps it's releasing during the week of May 21st. That means you'll soon be able to play on a phone, tablet or TV, so long as it's on the same 5GHz network as the host PC or it's connected to the computer via Ethernet cable.
