News:: Screw Raiden, I'm playing as Black Lightning in Injustice 2

When Raiden was confirmed as a DLC character for Injustice 2, I really wasn't on board with the decision. I thought it was a slot that could be better used by one of the superb lightning-based heroes or villains of the DC Universe. Somebody like Livewire, Static or Black Lightning.

Well, looks like I got my wish because while Raiden is coming to the game, so is Black Lightning by way of a premier skin. Take a look at them in action with this freshly dropped trailer.

News:: 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' smashes Steam's peak user record

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has broken another Steam record, and this time it might stick. The battle royale shooter just surpassed Valve's Dota 2 to claim the all-time record for peak player count, with 1.34 million gamers fighting for survival versus a little less than 1.3 million for its rival. That's not bad for a game that was only released in Early Access form in March.

News:: What does the community think of lewd games?

I finished the single player story of Senran Kagura: Estival Versus last week. Last year, I would've never imagined myself playing a game that seems to lean so heavily on selling the game based on stripping the clothing off of anime girls. But, after a few crisis' of faith due to seeing quite a few streams and videos of its gameplay, my curiosity was piqued.

News:: I've been flying through Fugl's voxel world to relax

I often play horror games, and while I enjoy them, they tend to leave me feeling tense and in need of something much lighter to take away the stress. After the crazy WTF-filled ride that was Observer, I was itching for something I could just sit with for a while and relax. Luckily, Fugl launched on Steam's Early Access a couple of days ago and it's been just what I need.

Relaxation is the entire point of Fugl. You play as a voxel bird flying throughout the world, discovering new landscapes and creatures as you glide through the air. The most interesting part of Fugl is that you can shapeshift. Flying past another kind of bird will turn you into a duck, flamingo, falcon, owl, etc. while flying close to another non-bird creature will cause you to take on some of its characteristics, turning you into a strange but cute hybrid.

News:: 'Battleborn' is winding down months after going free-to-play

Battleborn's move to a free-to-play model doesn't appear to have helped its chances. Gearbox has revealed that it's winding down work on the hero-based team shooter as the studio shifts its focus to a "highly anticipated" (but unnamed) project. There isn't any more planned content after the upcoming Fall Update, creative director Randy Varnell says, including skins and balance patches. The servers will stick around "for the foreseeable future," so you can still play -- it'll just remain relatively static.

News:: Super Mario Odyssey will be the first Mario game to get a CERO B rating in Japan

Super Mario Odyssey will be the first mainline Mario game to receive a CERO B rating in Japan.

CERO is Japan's video game classification board. Much like ESRB in the United States, CERO is used to help parents decide what games are appropriate for their children.

News:: 20% off Dishonored: Death of the Outsider and recent releases in Weekend Deals

This weekend we have plenty of September and recent August release on the price chop block for PC gamers, including last Friday's release of Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. The standalone title is an end to what was suppose to be a trilogy, priced slightly lower than a full title given the length of the game. Essentially if you had performance issue with Dishonored 2 before, you'll probably face the same issue here. Otherwise, non-Dishonored fan need not apply.

In recent release camp, XCOM 2: War of the Chosen and Life is Strange: Before the Storm returns to 25% off. Both are Steam key and are also good pick up for fans of the respective series as reviews are favorable and thankfully both also hits the right price point. A Resident Evil franchise sale is being offered at GMG, while conversely some Capcom titles are also offered in the latest Humble Bundle (which is pretty good at the Beat the Average level).

For console gamers, there's plenty of pre-owned copies being offloaded by Gamefly this weekend and you can pick up Prey for cheap at $18 on either the PS4 or Xbox One. Other good titles are Final Fantasy XV for $20, Valkyria Revolution for $13, and Battlefield 1 for $15.

In console hardware, the Nintendo Switch supply seems to have finally caught up with demand as they are now much easier to find online. Currently there are two bundles priced at $379.99, with the Splatoon 2 bundle being available while the Mario Odyssey bundle being a pre-order.

News:: Can you name a better final boss battle than the one in Super Metroid?

I'll always remember the end of Star Fox Adventures  as the perfect example of how not to end a video game. This 25-hour adventure, lightly sprinkled with that classic Star Fox action we all love, goes against everything the game was about in its final moments with a shoehorned Andross battle. An otherwise lightly enjoyable romp arguably ruined by its final moments. Looking back over the last 28 years that I've been gaming, it's astounding how many final boss battles fail to properly wrap up the adventure.

But some do a damn good job of it and that is the topic of this week's Destructoid Discusses: final boss battles. I was very, very close to going with the all-time classic of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island as it remains one of the best battles ever conceived. So that was going to be my answer and I had a different lede written up for it, but I would be lying to myself and you if I didn’t admit that, even after 23 years, the Mother Brain battle at the end of Super Metroid is the best goddamn boss battle in history.

Super Metroid is an exceptional game, one that is perfect in its original form. That game is reason enough why the franchise should be one of the biggest at Nintendo, but for whatever reason *cough* comparative sales *cough* it isn’t. It’s the one that struggles to continue, that honestly doesn’t feel like it has a direction or a leader guiding its future.

Perhaps that’s because it peaked in 1994. It peaked with an amazing opening through a deserted space station, memorable boss battles that were absolutely gigantic for the time, and an ending that, without any words at all, conveyed an incredible amount of story and emotion that just kept punching. Seeing that baby Metroid, all grown up, nearly kill me earlier on only to come save my life as the monster Mother Brain was about to annihilate me is just as emotional today as when I first experienced it at 10 years old.

It’s not the most difficult battle, but it’s the one I’ll remember until I’m deep in the throes of dementia. And even then, I’m sure the rainbow-colored blasts of Samus’ arm cannon will find a way to sneak into my mind and put a smile on my face.

**The following list obviously contains spoilers for the games mentioned. Most are from the prior console generations and none of them are from games released for the first time this year. However, one of the games (the last one) in an indie title first released in 2015 on PC and again for the PS4 earlier this year. Another title is a GBA classic getting a remake on the 3DS early next month. So, if the title of this article wasn't a big enough warning, then this should be.

News:: NES Golf found within the Switch's firmware

Way back in July, I reported that the Switch had some built-in emulation capabilities. Just the other day we got a little more information on what exactly that was.

It appears that all Switch systems contain a copy of Golf for the NES, it even comes with two-player Joy-Con support.
