News::Kinect Put to Clever Use in Puzzle-Platformer Fru

Game Jams are often the precursor for things to come, and Fru, a product of Global Game Jam 2014, just might be the start of something for Microsoft's Kinect. The platform-puzzler by Mattia Traverso and his team of six developers was created in 48 hours and it puts Kinect's camera and motion controller to clever use. See how it works in the demo trailer below:

News::Update: Ubisoft Abandoning Watch Dogs Trademark Was Fraudulent; Not Legitimate

GamersNexus: "The web was just hit with a frenzy of articles about Ubisoft filing an "express abandonment" of its "WATCH DOGS" trademark; we've seen articles and forum posts buzzing about the possibility of an Assassin's Creed rebrand, cancellation, and other nonsense, but we're fairly positive that this isn't anything beyond the usual technicalities that arise when dealing with trademarks."

News::Sexy horse traps in Deception IV's Rube Goldberg machine

I was watching Mouse Hunt the other day expecting it to not hold up since seeing it in theaters in 1997. Remember when a children's film could start with a bleak funeral that ends with a body in a sewer and continue towards more death and failed marriages? Turns out, I still really like Mouse Hunt. Part of my giddiness for its slapstick stems from its delightful Rube Goldberg machines where one insignificant act sets in motion a series of increasingly grander happenings.

Deception IV: Blood Ties is coming to North America (PS3, Vita) on March 25. It's a little like Mouse Hunt, but with less Nathan Lane and more almost naked women. It's more extremely slapstick, too, with this twelve combo trap. A boulder is dropped on the woman, she is set on fire, she's thrust onto a horse and knocked off with a pendulum axe. Good, wholesome family fun.

You'll find more detailed gameplay footage here; the above video is all payoff.

News::Octodad: Dadliest Catch Review | Saving Content

Excerpt: "Moving Octodad is an interesting affair, as youll control the left leg, right leg, and his right arm. You can do so with a keyboard & mouse, and a gamepad like the Xbox 360 Controller or even the recent DualShock 4, with no special trickery for it to work natively. It makes sense given that the game is due to release on PlayStation 4. The gamepad feels the most natural and controlled, whereas the keyboard & mouse felt too loose and imprecise. But that said, Octodads movements can feel wild and varied to the point where you barely feel in control of your actions. That is where some of the hilarity comes from, aside from the dialogue, seeing Octodad move in mysterious ways."

As of a system update going live late tonight, PlayStation 4 owners with an official Pulse or Pulse Elite Edition headset will now be able to use their device with the console. That took a while, didn't it?

With that support out of the way, Sony is now able to talk about a new device: the Gold Wireless Headset. Due early this month for $99, the 7.1 virtual surround sound set will be compatible with PS3, PS4, PC, and Mac, as well as PS Vita via 3.5mm audio cable.

News::Nintendo consoles, handhelds to share a common platform

Following Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's presentation to investors last week, a Q&A session was held and one of his responses -- the one about console and handheld hardware becoming more like brothers -- grabbed our attention. The full Q&A has since been translated and that specific answer is much more informative than the snippet we originally saw.

Asked if last year's organization changes within Nintendo would mean the integration of console and handheld devices into one system, or cost savings associated with resource efficiencies, Iwata said "...we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.

"Still, I am not sure if the form factor (the size and configuration of the hardware) will be integrated. In contrast, the number of form factors might increase. Currently, we can only provide two form factors because if we had three or four different architectures, we would face serious shortages of software on every platform." Iwata cited iOS and Android as examples Nintendo should follow in terms of having multiple devices that share a common platform.

Previously, Nintendo"always ended up developing a system that was completely different from its predecessor," excluding the GameCube and Wii, which had a similar architecture. Under the new plan and with a more integrated R&D division, there will be fewer game shortages during the launch periods of new systems, according to Iwata.

EAs FIFA 14 (-4%) drops to No2 and is less than 500 sales behind. Given the scarcity of releases at this time of year, FIFA 14 will be hoping to re-take No1 next week which would give the title entrance to the small elite club of products that have aquired 10 weeks at No1 on the All Formats Chart (currently 10 titles). The rest of the Top 10 remains pretty much unchanged, with Activisions Call of Duty: Ghosts down 1 place at No3 (+19%), EAs Battlefield 4 down 1 place at No4 (-5%) and Warners LEGO Marvel Super Heroes also down 1 place to No5 (+11%).

News::Were Losing the War on Microtransactions

Hardcore Gamer: We all know that microtransactions are becoming more and more integral to their respective games, convoluting competition and damaging publishing rights, but weve still been able to (begrudgingly and reluctantly) coexist with them. Final Fantasy: All the Bravest was a downright travesty, one of the most manipulative and dishonest releases to come from any franchise. When you have to either wait three minutes to revive a party member or pay real money to speed it up, thats putting up a paywall that literally prevents you from continuing. Youre forced to justwait. All the Bravest was widely panned for this issue alone, earning a number of dubious honors, including places on many gamers and publications worst of 2013 lists. But as much of a wreck All the Bravest is, its not the worst use of microtransactions. Thats very hard to believe, but something has gone lower. A game has made microtransactions even worse than All the Bravest did.

If you're not the type to stay commited to characters for one week at a time (which I'm sure Microsoft is banking on), they're available permanently for $4.99 a piece or $19.99 for the entire season's cast. Spinal was added just last week, and it has to be damn near impossible to kill something that's already dead.

Edge Online: Remember the weird language used by the Dni people in the Myst series? It was a thing of beauty, and added an interesting layer to the game. What I really liked was knowing that the developers had bothered to create it, and had done so with a depth and commitment that frankly made them heroic. But I am a sucker for that sort of thing.
