News::Metro Redux screenshots showcase graphical improvements

Deep Silver has released a few more screenshots of Metro Redux , the remaster of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this summer.

The package (also available individually) represents a great way to get into the series -- particularly the first game. Visual and gameplay improvements from Metro: Last Light are being carried back into Metro 2033 Redux, as detailed here. Last Light Redux will also look nicer, include all DLC, and have new features like "check watch" and "check inventory," though the cosmetic upgrades won't be quite so dramatic in comparison. At $24.99 per game, I might just bite.

Also, modes: there's a bunch of 'em. Ranger Mode for both titles returns, removing the HUD and increasing the difficulty. Then there's the choice to play with the 2033 Survival or Last Light Spartan play styles -- the former has limited resources, tougher AI, and slower reloads; the latter is more action-oriented and streamlined, with plentiful resources.

News::It's Slime time: Household items to add some Dragon Quest flair to the home

You may not know this about me, but Slimes are one of my favorite things in the wide world of gaming. I've got this adorable little pair of earbuds, a plush Slime, a keychain, and even the PlayStation controller, but I need more. Until I get the tattoo I'm planning on someday, I can fill the void in my life with one or all of these Slime products for the home.

You've got Slime ice trays, a Slime glass, and a Slime hourglass all up for grabs, household items that belong in any Dragon Quest fan's domicile. Shame they're Japan only, but if you really want to buy one, I'm sure you can find a way.

News::Watch Dogs Review | Coin-Op TV

Overall Watch Dogs is extremely fun most of our complaints and hiccups out the interface and game were easily forgotten once we got an hour or two into the game. Watch Dogs also has a nice stealth mechanic in which you can use security cameras to navigate the area before tackling enemies something were anxious to see more in future games. The multiplayer/online element of Watch Dogs is a novelty and with limited fun factor but definitely something to praise the developers along the way.

Watch Dogs Uplay and Season Pass Issues Fixed?

It looks like Watch Dogs might be getting past one of its launch woes. A note sent to me on my PS4 in the "important notifications from PlayStation" part of my inbox indicates that problems with the game's season pass have been fixed. Ubisoft also Tweeted this afternoon that "authentication" issues have been resolved, presumably making PC gamers' lives easier.

News::Reading Rainbow wants to fly to consoles like PlayStation and Xbox

Confession time: Ever since the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter was announced earlier this week, we've been looking for a reason to write about it. It's a formative relic of our youths, how could we not want to discuss it? With the inclusion of a new stretch goal, that opportunity arises.

After being quickly funded for the initial $1M, Reading Rainbow's now aiming for $5M. If this becomes a reality (it's currently closing in on $3M), Reading Rainbow will be available on more platforms and in more classrooms. Gaming consoles (specifically PlayStation and Xbox) are one of these platforms that's being targeted.

This Kickstarter just keeps finding ways to grow. It's lofty to think it can go twice as high, but frankly, it can go anywhere -- including Sony and Microsoft's videogame consoles.

News::How Rocksteady and Warner Bros. tamed Batman

AWESOMEoutof10's Fraser Brown takes a look at how Rocksteady and Warner Bros. Games turned Batman into an easy to digest action hero. "Rocksteady and Warner Bros. have tamed Batman, making him simple and shallow. His weaknesses have been almost entirely removed, his utility belt is a Pandoras box that can tackle anything and his foes pose primarily physical threats. The Dark Knight and his realm have been boiled down into easily digestible trope-filled experiences that are easy to dip in and out of. Systems replace meaningful exploration of what it really means to be Batman. The counter system, detective mode, experience points these things make Batman just another video game action hero. Stripped of his vulnerability and complexity, all that makes him stand out is his kinky black costume."

News::1001 Spikes also hitting Wii U, 3DS on June 3

We heard the PS4, PS Vita, and Steam versions of 1001 Spikes were coming June 3. Which is great and all, but I know a number of us were going to hold out for the game on Wii U or 3DS -- no need to! Nicalis has confirmed those releases are also happening on Tuesday.

What gives? Apparently, a few issues with these specific ports were found at the last minute -- but the company has decided to release 1001 Spikes as is anyway and update the game as soon as possible rather than delay. "Nintendo has assured us that an update could be issued within a couple of days of release to knock out those bugs," said Nicalis. "...we don't plan to leave our Nintendo fans behind on a game they've been patiently waiting for."

Not a great situation to be in, but assuming these aren't serious bugs, that decision is understandable. In better news, 3DS players who own any of Nicalis' previous games -- VVVVVV, NightSky, Cave Story, Ikachan, or Grinsia -- can save $5 on 1001 Spikes, bringing it down to $10.

As a fan of the original Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes, Tuesday can't come soon enough. I haven't been paying too close attention to the new cast of characters, so 1001 Spikes should be a pleasant surprise. Up until the point at which it's death after death after death. It's inevitable.

News::Watch_Dogs May Hurt PC Gaming

CCC Says: "A few weeks ago, I conducted an experiment. A friend of mine was given 3,000 dollars to buy a brand new gaming laptop. We decided to try and match one to current gaming spec, and we used Watch_Dogs as our measuring stick. Unfortunately, we were in for a bit of a harsh surprise. We literally couldnt find processors or graphics cards good enough to meet the recommended specs for the game. Our only choice was to include multiple discrete graphics cards working at once. We decided to try again with a desktop and had more success, but we still had to drop way more money than we wanted to."

Hardcore Gamer: For the entirety of the last console generation, first person shooters were the most popular and most prominent genre within gaming. Shooters on consoles had been steadily gaining popularity ever since Halo: Combat Evolved first came out back in 2001, but it wasn't until Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007 that shooters became the clear-cut most popular genre in the gaming mainstream. Call of Duty 4 didn't only launch the series and shooters in general to a new level of unprecedented success, it also ushered in the dominance of the modern military shooter, which would last for the entirety of generation seven. But is it fading in generation 8?

Robert Workman (Prima Games): In Ubisoft's Watch Dogs, you play a high-tech hero (or villain, depending on your reputation) looking to take advantage of Chicago's ctOS system, all in the name of getting even with the criminals that killed your family member. Throughout the game, you'll be able to unleash high-tech havoc with the push of a button. However, as original as the game is, it actually has quite a bit in common with Ubisoft Montreal's hit series Assassin's Creed.
