News::Rumored Titanfall beta set for February 14

Xboxygen is reporting that Titanfall will see a beta on the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 from February 14 to February 19. The beta will be exclusive through Zappos in France, and GameStop in the US along with other possible territories.

The reception to Titanfall has been quite the sight to see on Destructoid, and in general. This is really one of those games that you have to experience firsthand to truly show how this isn't just another formulaic first-person shooter.

News::League of Legends sees 27 million people playing DAILY

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that League of Legends sees 27 million playing the MOBA daily. DAILY! This more than doubles the 12 million counted back in October 2012. Over 7.5 million people play the game concurrently at peak hours too, an increase of 50% from the 5 million last March.

It definitely helps that the game is free-to-play. Still, that's a crazy amount of people playing every day.

News::Teslagrad Review | Combo Caster

The most striking aspect of the presentation is Teslagrad nonverbal way it communicates with the player. No single sentence read or write throughout the game. It is a complex story, a baby is delivered in a home one stormy night by fugitive father, before leaving the house years later, hunted and chased all the way to a mysterious tower. This is where the player sees the history of the tower, the city and its inhabitants gradually revealed through pictograms, and even small puppet theaters.

News::Leaked presentation shows Left 4 Dead 2 in Source 2

Famed NeoGAF leaker CBOAT has posted a screencap of what appears to be a Valve slideshow presentation detailing Source 2. The PowerPoint shows Left 4 Dead 2's plantation level rebuilt in the new engine and one of the slides, shown above, is clearly visible. Compressed, but visible.

I don't believe this necessarily backs up Left 4 Dead 3 as something which exists, however that is likely a game we will one day get to play. The leak is the first we've really seen of Source 2 in quite a while, though, and I'm ready to hear more from Valve -- whether that be about the engine, the next game, or probably both.

News::King removes Pac-Avoid, talks IP policies in open letter

"At its simplest, our policy is to protect our IP and to also respect the IP of others," King wrote in an open letter about intellectual property that serves as the company's response to criticism it has faced for trademarking the word "Candy" in the EU and attempting to do the same in the US, opposing Stoic and its Viking role-playing game The Banner Saga for using the word "Saga," and allegedly cloning a web game five years ago.

The letter and its defenses are about what you'd expect based on prior statements made by King, however it did admit that publishing Pac-Avoid, the one accused of being a clone, was a mistake. "We have taken the game down from our site, and we apologize for having published it in the first place. Let me be clear: This unfortunate situation is an exception to the rule. King does not clone games, and we do not want anyone cloning our games."

As for the trademarks, King says "We're just trying to prevent others from creating games that unfairly capitalize on our success" which, trademark law being what it is and King's specific trademarks being common words, means that King is unfairly hindering the success of Stoic.

"We've been the subject of no little scorn for our actions on this front, but the truth is that there is nothing very unusual about trademarking a common word for specific uses. Think of 'Time,' 'Money,' 'Fortune,' 'Apple,' and 'Sun,' to name a few." Thing is, the game isn't Candy. It's Candy Crush Saga. And I think many of us realize how ridiculous a system it is. Even if what King has done is commonplace, you can't blame us for not feeling sympathetic.

News::SteamOS and Steam Controller - Everything You Need To Know

When Valve revealed their ambitious SteamOS plan last September at LinuxCon 2013, many of us in the gaming press weren't quite sure what to make of the announcement. This wasn't simply another game maker looking to enter the heated console wars dominated by names like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, but rather an attempt to bring PC gaming, oft the realm of bedrooms and game rooms, into the living room. In the following months, Valve has slowly trickled out more information on SteamOS, and the revolutionary Steam Controller that was designed to be used with it. While there are still some unanswered questions, Valve's vision for the future of PC gaming is becoming clearer, particularly with the big unveiling of their new Steam Machines (which we covered in detail here) earlier this month at CES.

News::Here's some tantalizing info on the Legend of Grimrock 2

Legend of Grimrock was a nice surprise, a defiantly old-school dungeon crawler brought to modern systems with a fresh coat of paint. Details on the sequel have been scarce but now a big blog post on the official site has shed light on what to expect. It looks like developer Almost Human is expanding on the core game but moving the location to a whole new area, the island of Nex.

It'll be interesting to see how the island setting is built into the dungeon crawling gameplay, as I'd imagine being able to see the sky might diminish the sense of claustrophobia I got from playing the original Legend of Grimrock. Still, some variety in the scenery would be welcome. The story in Legend of Grimrock 2 will be new as well without carrying over from the first game so this might make the sequel a great jumping-in point for new players.

There's also going to be a tweaked skill system, new puzzles and totally reworked enemy AI. A new playable race will also make an appearance which has me raking my brains for a suitable fantasy race that could be added. My bet? Dark Elves. Still no news about a potential release date but fingers crossed Grimrock 2 arrives this year.

News::Insurgency Review | MMOGames

The First Person Shooter (FPS) genre is one that has stagnated over the past few years, coming up with fewer and fewer interesting games, and what seems like an almost endless parade of modern or realistic shooters, realistic being code from gritty, grey and teeth-grindingly boring. Insurgency, the first full release by developers New World Interactive, is the followup from the highly successful Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat mod for Half-Life 2 and is a realistic shooter. No, not one of those realistic shooters, an actual realistic shooter. It has realism and all of that other boring stuff that gets ignored by the others in this procession, all of which will be described in this, my Insurgency Review.

From Strategyinformer.com: "The Dark Eye is an extremely popular tabletop fantasy role-playing game in Germany, in the style of Dungeons & Dragons and their ilk, so its odd that the only games which have been made out of it are Daedalics adventures Chains of Satinav and Memoria. News::Review: The Banner Saga (DarkZero)

Dom from DarkZero writes - "I love strategy RPGs. Its an addiction that started back in the PlayStation era - from Final Fantasy Tactics to Front Mission 3, from Disgaea to Valkyria Chronicles (that reminds me that I still need to play Jeanne d'Arc), I would like to think Ive played most of the major entries in the genre, so I was happy to see that the Kickstarter campaign for The Banner Sagas first episode was successfully met back in April of 2012 by quite a margin. What made me even more interested in the game was that this indie developed title by Stoic, a small company made up of ex-Bioware employees, was in fact a strategy RPG. There aren't many indie titles that fall into this category, which made me even more excited to see what could be done with the genre when a developer isn't tied to a big publisher."
