News:: Project Nimbus: Code Mirai launches on PlayStation 4 next week

If you thought that you had heard of Project Nimbus before, that wouldn't be wrong. The title was funded via Kickstarter, and prior to its final release was in Early Access on Steam. Last November the game launched in Japan for the PlayStation 4, gaining the name Project Nimbus: Code Mirai in the process. Today developer GameCrafterTeam, alongside publishers KISS Publishing and GameTomo, announced the PS4 version would be launching on April 10 in North America and April 11 in Europe.

You can check out the launch trailer below.

News:: Looks like Spike is playable in Mario Tennis Aces

It's so nice having a Mario Tennis game to be excited about again. Camelot seems to be on the right track with Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch, which is to say that it looks like a full-fledged game with a lot of the things we liked in old Mario Tennis titles and some more experimental stuff, too.

Today, thanks to a family-focused Switch advert of all things, we got a quick peek at a new character in Aces. It's Spike! Y'know, those annoying spiked-ball-throwers that have shown up throughout the Super Mario series ever since Super Mario Bros. 3.? Yeah! Those little gremlins! Just skip to 1:49 in the video.

There's room for quite a few more spaces on that character selection screen, wouldn't you say? It'd be fun to play as the freakishly lanky Weird Mario from Super Mario Maker. Think of his reach!

News:: 'Hitman' games have brighter future thanks to Warner Bros. deal

The Hitman game franchise has seen some tumultuous times lately: Square Enix tried to offload its developer, IO Interactive, prompting the studio to buy its independence. While that gave IO more control, it also left the company more vulnerable if sales fell short. Not to fear, however: IO has signed a Hitman publishing deal with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The agreement should provide some stability, and even gives fans a re-release in the short term.

News:: Steel Rats has a cool new take on motorbike combat

I think I let out an audible "all right!" while watching this trailer for Steel Rats. It caught me off guard.

It's a motorbike combat game set in a 2.5D "action-arcade" world that visually calls to mind Shadow Complex. Playing as multiple members of the titular biker gang, you'll perform stunts, dodge trains, and shred apart killer robots with a fiery and almost buzzsaw-like front wheel. It looks wild!

We're planning to check this one out at PAX East later in the week, so keep an eye out.

News:: The 300 Week 13: Nostalgia? More Like Meh-stolgia, Amiright?

Greetings, earthlings, welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my absurd attempt to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching blockbusters, oldies, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. Hopefully there’s something here for you.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

Another week down, and I'm slightly closer to hitting triple digits. Hoping to get there before the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from Wednesday, April 18 through Sunday, April 29. Jesse Lab and I will be covering the festival once it gets underway, and I should be able to catch a lot of movies (if I don't burn out, 34) during that time.

For the next few weeks, just a reasonable stream of films, with the same mix of old and new. This includes the full filmographies of Lynne Ramsay and Lucrecia Martel in consecutive weeks, a four-hour Chinese arthouse epic, and movie in which John Cena butt chugs beer. Art, people. Art.

And so, onward.

News:: Slime Rancher is wonderful and it's heading to PS4

Slime Rancher is a total cutie. It's a first-person farming simulator about wrangling slimes and it has one of those well-paced gameplay loops that keeps you coming back day after day to tick more items off your mental to-do list. I say that both as a compliment and a word of warning to would-be players.

So far, Slime Rancher has only been on PC and Xbox One. Later this year, it's coming to PS4.

The Vacpack is such a fun toy-like tool. Along with the PlayStation 4 port in September, developer Monomi Park will also have a physical edition of Slime Rancher for both PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: Sea of Thieves update addresses stalemates and griefing

Today's update for Sea of Thieves targets a problem I've run into quite a few times now: stalemates.

If your crew has ever set sail toward a skull fort in hopes of stockpiling loads of treasure, you've more than likely encountered other ships with the same goal in mind. The ensuing chaos of skeletons firing cannons as two or more player-controlled ships clash around an island fortress is entertaining, don't get me wrong, but there can come a point where the skirmish just won't end. You sink them, or they sink you, and then the fallen crew simply respawns with fresh supplies and rejoins the fight.

This is how the developers hope to address that all-too-common scenario (and griefing):

Ship respawn distance - When a ship sinks, we have significantly increased the distance at which the crews new ship will respawn. Ships will now respawn outside of visible view of the ship that sank them. This is in response to lots of player feedback which highlighted that the previous spawn distance was resulting in "griefing" behaviour and stalemates at the forts!

They're also making the teleport-back-to-ship mechanic a little clearer with respect to treasure:

Mermaid Teleport - Pirates will now have to drop any treasure item they are carrying before being able to see the 'Teleport back to ship' option from the mermaid. We saw feedback that players were accidentally leaving treasure behind in the sea, so wanted to make it more clear that when you teleport you leave your treasure behind!

News:: Far Cry 5 is the fastest selling game in the franchise

Far Cry 5 has only been out for a week, but the game has already become the fastest selling title in the Far Cry franchise. Ubisoft proudly shared that sales figures for the game doubled the first week numbers for Far Cry 4, which is really impressive considering the former game also launched on PS3 and Xbox 360. As well as becoming the de facto Far Cry title, Far Cry 5 is also the second biggest launch in Ubisoft history, coming in a close second to The Division.

"Consumer spending" for the game has reached around $310 million, though how much of that is represented by pure game sales is unknown. As well as getting people to open their wallets, Far Cry 5 has also seen a huge turnout on streaming services. Ubisoft is reporting that around 55,000 hours of the game have been streamed on Twitch and YouTube with total views above 117 million. That certainly sounds like a popular game.

Executive producer for the Far Cry, Dan Hay, said, "I'm proud that the culmination of years of passionate work from the team is paying off and that Far Cry 5's experience resonates with so many people. We are humbled by players' reception of Far Cry 5 and fired up to keep growing and supporting the Far Cry community." With how successful the game turned out, I wouldn't doubt we'll see continued support in the coming years (especially with so many Ubisoft games getting "Year 2" DLC).

News:: Talking localization with Yakuza localization producers Scott Strichart and Sam Mullen

For years now, I’ve been a huge fan of the Yakuza series. The first title I played was Yakuza 3 back in 2011 and it took me by complete surprise. It was basically everything I had ever wanted out of a video game, right down to kooky characters and gut-wrenching action moments. It also had an extreme attention to detail in recreating a small slice of Tokyo, a city I’ve always fantasized about visiting.

When the chance arose to speak with the localization team behind the series, I couldn’t pass that up. I had always wondered about how one gets started doing localization or what the process might be for selecting which features get cut. With Yakuza 6 releasing soon, it felt like the best opportunity to have a chat with Scott Strichart and Sam Mullen (producers over at Atlus that handle Sega’s Japanese content). While I wasn’t able to directly talk to them, I did put together a couple of questions that hopefully answers how the localization process isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

News:: Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash getting 'Sunshine Edition' in Japan

Marvelous Entertainment are to re-release their sun-soaked arena-shooter Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash in Japan. The game will be getting an all new edition, complete with new pre-order bonuses.

The Sunshine Edition, which is set for release in July in the East, will include the original game at a discounted price, along with a code to download five exclusive swimsuits for your battalion of jet-wash warriors. The new skins will be available for purchase separately, so no one misses out on the chance to spend money.

The Sunshine Limited Edition also comes with one of those weird-ass mousepads that has giant 3D boobs. We certainly didn't have such things when I was a wee lad. Various outlets in Japan have their own exclusive pre-order bonuses, from posters, to beach towels and tapestries, all adorned with very rude images of the game's cheesecake cast.

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash - Sunshine Edition goes on sale in Japan on July 26 for ¥3,900, or $36, for the standard edition, or a kinda pricey ¥8,100, or $76, for the Limited Edition.

News:: J.J. Abrams had a different plan for Rey's lineage

Arguing about The Last Jedi is the Internet's most favorite thing to do. Half the conversations I have about any movie at all somehow turn into discussions on the film. It's getting kind of tiring... so let's pour a little lighter fluid onto that shit.

During a recent interview, Simon Pegg, who acted in and helped write The Force Awakens, revealed that J.J. Abrams had much different plans for Rey and the mystery of who her parents were, basically saying that Abrams had tossed around the fact that they were important in some way or another.

“I know what JJ kind of intended or at least was being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by the last one. There was some talk of a relevant lineage for her.”

Obviously, Abrams was aware of what Rian Johnson was doing with the screenplay, and other interviews have indicated that Abrams was on board with Johnson's take on things, but it's interesting to see that Johnson's film really did deviate drastically from what Abrams and Disney had planned. The fact that Disney even let him run in a completely different direction with a franchise this important is pretty incredible, and shows some balls in letting their creative leaders actually control the product. It's really interesting to think that Disney  didn't have this all planned out down to the smallest detail or if they did that they let Johnson just blow it all up.

And, for me, that's why The Last Jedi was so damn good. It took the bog standard ideas set up by the fun-but-cliche Force Awakens and flipped everything on its head. Johnson made some bold movies, and they paid off in fantastic ways that make the flaws of the film seem minute.

The real question now is what Abrams will do now that he's back in control for Episode IX. Are we going to veer back toward more traditional Star Wars tales and possibly attempt a retcon of Johnson's work or is he moving forward with a story that's more in line with The Last Jedi?

News:: The Lost Child will be heading West this Summer

NIS America have announced Western release dates for mysterious god-battler The Lost Child, which is coming to PS4, PS Vita and Nintendo Switch in June.

The Lost Child follows occult investigator Hayato Ibuki, who stumbles upon otherworldly forces whilst following the trail of a series of strange suicides in Tokyo. Hooking up with mysterious girl Balucia, Hayato is given a weapon of extraordinary power, and so begins a tale of gods, monsters and the mere mortals caught in-between.

The new trailer (which you can check out below) gives you, frankly, nothing. But the game appears to be a visual novel interspersed with real-time RPG battles. I found no footage on traversing open worlds, or any traversal at all, in fact. Just lots of chatter followed by menu-based battles with a menagerie of weird creatures and fallen angels. It will be interesting to see how the game shapes up once it hits these shores.

The Lost Child launches on PS4, PS Vita and Switch on June 19 in North America and June 22 in Europe.

News:: The Pokemon Sun and Moon anime arrives on Netflix today

The Pokemon anime is still going strong! What was once a "fad" according to some parents is on its 21st season, and is alive and well after its 1997 Japan debut.

In case you're not caught up Netflix just dropped 43 episodes of the first  Sun & Moon series, which ran throughout 2017 in the US. It starts with "Alola to New Adventure!" and ends with "When Regions Collide!", and once again deals with Ash and his crew's adventures.

There's some great episodes in there, most notably the ones featuring Mimikyu, who is a bit more fleshed out in the anime. The 21st season, Sun and Moon: Ultra Adventures, just started airing in the US on March 24, so odds are it'll be another year until we see that one on the service.

For reference Japan is gearing up to host the 21st Pokemon film -- Everyone's Story -- on July 13. It's a semi-remake of the second arc of the anime, much like the previous film of Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You! was a re-telling of the story of Ash and Pikachu.

News:: This War of Mine available to play for free on Steam until April 8

2014's miserable survival title, This War of Mine, is available to play for free on Steam until the end of the weekend. Developer 11 bit studios annoucne the trial in part celebration of their new game Frostpunk, which launches later this month.

This War of Mine is the tale of a group of civilians struggling to survive during a military conflict in the fictional country of Graznavia. Players must make pragmatic decisions and take extraordinary risks in order to provide food, shelter and healthcare for the characters, while protecting them from hostiles such as looters and snipers.

The game was praised upon release for its grim, suffocating aesthetics and unflinching portrayal of the harrows of war on a city's populace. While hardly a fun-time-for-all, This War of Mine is an uniquely-crafted experience of balance, pragmatism and sacrifice. It was also reinvented as a tabletop game earlier this year.

This War of Mine is free to play on Steam from now until April. Should you wish to purchase the title, its price has been slashed by a huge 70% Frostpunk launches on April 24.

News:: Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud is out now on Switch in Japan

Phantasy Star Online 2 just arrived on Switch, but wait! There's caveats.

First off it's only available on the Japanese eShop, which isn't that big of a problem if you have a cross-region account -- though the Japanese text might give you some trouble (this is assuaged with the PC edition's unofficial localization patches). Next, it's actually called Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud, because it's a cloud-based platform that's allowing you to play.

On one hand you don't need to download huge chunks of updates that take up space on your hardware, and you can share progress across the PC, PS4, and Vita platforms. On the other, you can only reach a framerate of 30FPS at best, and lag will really mess with your ability to play -- some Japanese users are even reporting these issues in the east.

Okay so it's been 3000 years nearly six years since PSO 2 launched on PC in Japan, and now it's available on nearly everything but the Xbox platform. Can we...get a localization? Make another Sonic Mania to help pay for it if you have to, Sega.

News:: It's time to talk about mental illness in indie development

This is normal.

Heart pounding, hands shaking, head packed with static. The absolute inability to process what anyone is saying, let alone respond to it. Sitting alone at home -- lights off because you've been inside all day and the sun set hours ago, but your legs have been glued to the chair for just as long -- computer screen glowing. Wanting to be outside but unable to deal with the idea of people, conversation, smiling, pretending. Feeling worthless.

News:: Penny-Punching Princess out now, receives frantic launch trailer

NIS America has finally released action-RPG title Penny-Punching Princess. The colourful adventure, which launched in Europe last week, is now available in North America, with the publisher putting out a fast-paced launch trailer to celebrate.

Penny-Punching Princess sees players in the adorably grumpy role of the titular Princess (and her pal Isabella), whose mad economical skills and wizard mathematical abilities allow her to take down waves of enemies through the power of financial manipulation. When all else fails, you always have the universal language of a good ol' right hook.

It's a really pretty game and a fun experience to boot. I myself am amazing at budgeting and making the most of my dollar, the problem is I just rarely ever have any money to begin with, but at least I can live vicariously through this thrifty lass and her dungeon-clearing ways.

News:: Dark Devotion is a rad looking Gothic platformer hitting PC and consoles this year

Back in 2017 Hibernian Workshop Kickstarted Dark Devotion with a modest goal of €31,796, and it seems to be coming along already.

They've dropped new footage that shows off what they've been working on, which involves a narrative that centers around a "mystical temple," and themes of "suffering, piety, and conviction." I really dig the variety of equipment shown off in the trailer, and the game supposedly has a loot-centric focus in addition to a curse and blessing system that modifies certain game parameters.

They didn't quite hit their April 2018 release goal (who does?) that was initially communicated in their Kickstarter, as Dark Devotion is scheduled to launch "later this year" on PC and consoles.

News:: Minor Monster Hunter: World update fixes Dragon Piercer problem

Capcom have rolled out a small fix to rectify issues caused by the 2.0 update of open-world adventure game Monster Hunter: World. The new patch - 2.01 or 2.0.0.1 on PS4 and Xbox One respectively - should be live right now.

After the game's recent balance update, a problem with the bow's Dragon Piercer attack that caused limitations with aiming when the player was moving rapidly which, given that they probably had a huge scaly giant on their case, was happening more often than not.

Another small tweak has fixed the random order of loadouts, so that your inventory of items and weapons will always appear in a fixed, standardised order on-screen now. The patch notes below tell the whole tale.

News:: Wild Guns Reloaded is coming to Switch this month

Natsume has announced that Wild Guns Reloaded, their re-imagining of the SNES classic, will arrive on Switch on April 17. Since December of 2016 the game has been available on PS4, but it's since moved to PC in Natsume's first foray on the platform.

When it hits the Switch it'll be priced at $29.99, the same price it's currently going for on PS4, and $10 cheaper than the PC edition. It'll come with new modes, including "Beginner Mode," that grants unlimited lives, and Boss Rush: Time Attack, a gauntlet of big bads.

$30 is steep and Nintendo doesn't have as many third party sale opportunities as the PSN, but eventually this one is worth checking out.

News:: Stephen King's The Stand coming to CBS as 10-part TV series

Last summer yielded some hits and misses in ye olde Stephen King adaptation department. Obviously, we had It. Andy Muschietti's adaptation was refreshing, well directed and ideated creatively, and--most importantly--a hit with audiences. It had a modest budget and a hefty box office tally. King properties were hot again. Of course, that was on the heel's of an awful adaptation / continuation of The Dark Tower that bowed in August. No one liked it, and it cost a pretty penny to make and market, especially compared to its clown sibling. Everyone saw this coming. We all know how much people love clowns.

So, the next big thing in the Stephen King adaptation pipeline, outside It's promised part II, is another adaptation of King's epic, post-apocalyptic novel The Stand which ABC famously underwhelmed with a made-for-broadcast-TV adaptation back in 1994. We thought we were getting a movie, but apparently no one learned anything, and now CBS is creating another made-for-broadcast-TV adaptation.

News:: ‘Minit’ is a delightful introduction to speedrunning

I've never liked rushing through video games. I prefer to take my time, strolling aimlessly through the digital brush and marveling at each beautifully-realized world. There's just one problem: I don't have 100 hours to spend on Monster Hunter World or Assassin's Creed: Origins. Still, when I dive into a game I want to immerse myself and move at a speed that respects the time and effort put in by the developers.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang flaunted a Gigabyte Aero 15X at CES as to show how Max-Q tech can make laptops both light and powerful. With the updated 2018 Aero 15X, Gigabyte has shown it's not just about the graphics. It features an all-new eighth-generation Intel 6-core CPU and with a new 144Hz display, addresses the last model's biggest shortfall for gamers. At the same time, it retains the clever design, NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics and huge battery, making the Aero 15X the best lightweight gaming laptop you can buy. That said, there are a host of similar laptops coming soon, so Gigabyte might not retain its crown for long.

News:: WB is now the new publisher for Hitman following the split from Square Enix

In case you forgot, IO Interactive went through a pretty big scare last year. While it remained linked to Square Enix as a subsidiary folded into the company in 2009 (itself folded into Eidos Interactive), in 2017 Square Enix started fishing for buyers for IO -- which led them to purchase their own company back.

It was a happy ending somewhat as the great Hitman reboot was able to continue on, but now as of this week they've saught the help of another publisher to keep the dream alive. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is now stepping in to take over publishing and distribution worldwide for Hitman, and will be the new publisher for the Definitive Edition, which brings with it PS4 Pro and Xbox One X enhancements.

That version, essentially the GOTY edition, will arrive on May 15. If you haven't tried it yet, do it! Most of the game's episodes are great, and at this point you can link them all together for one giant experience.

News:: New announcement to be made during Overwatch League regarding upcoming event

In a new Developer Update video, Overwatch devs Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford have stated that an announcement is set for reveal during during Stage 3 of the Overwatch League, which kicks off later today.

The reveal is apparently pertaining to the arena-shooter's upcoming event Uprising, but more specifically concerns the "Overwatch Archives" concept, essentially a selection of missions based on the histories and lore of various Overwatch characters. Jeff also mentions that "Your favourite Shimada brother" will be getting a new skin and, of course, all of the previously-available Uprising skins from 2017 will be made available once again.

If you want to check out the announcement, it will be made during Game Two of Stage 3 of the Overwatch League, which is scheduled to start today at 16:00 PT. The frenetic multiplayer action can be watched over on the official OWL twitch channel.

The Overwatch Uprising event returns on all platforms on April 10.
