News:: Good God the Detective Pikachu amiibo is huge

When I read that the Detective Pikachu amiibo that accompanied the game was huge, I sort of brushed it off. But after obtaining a figure from Nintendo today, I was in pure awe at the size of this plastic rat.

Adorned with a great map aesthetic base, the great mouse detective commands other amiibo to halt in its presence, as only the massive green Yarn Yoshi figure can top it. As a reminder this toy will run you around 30 bucks, and unlocks in-game hints for Detective Pikachu.

Expect our review of the actual game next week.

News:: Nintendo releases official stickers for Japan's Line app with sound effects

Line! Man I miss Line. Going to Japan and using it, when basically everyone you meet has it already installed and stocked with tons of stickers was great. It's also great that a ton of publishers, Nintendo included, continue to support the platform with cute images and the like.

I was always a big fan of the Splatoon stickers but now there's another kid on the block -- arguably a year late -- Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This line of stickers for Line are a lot like the ones that already exist by default on iOS, but these make noises.

It's the little things. I just want an excuse to use Line again (insert crying Zelda sticker here).

News:: Ghost Recon: Wildlands update features new classes and maps

Open-world sicario-shooter Ghost Recon: Wildlands is still chugging along its dusty trail, and is getting its fourth major update since its original release one year ago.

The new download, which arrives today, will bring three new classes to the game. Trappers help provide recon assistance and can set hazards to bring down patrolling enemies. Guerillas are a support class that can provide cover via smokescreens delivered from flying drones. Finally, Stalkers are stealthy operatives who can mark the opposition without them even knowing that they have been spotted by the enemy.

Alongside the classes. Wildlands will be receiving two new maps for the game's Extraction mode: The Refinery, a huge cocaine lab located in Bolivia, and Cliffside, looking out over the tranquil but deadly home-territory of Santa Blanca. The patch will also bring a selection of bug-fixes and engine tweaks to the game's current build. Full details on these changes can be found right here.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

News:: You can now change your appearance in Monster Hunter: World

My character in Monster Hunter: World more or less turned out as intended, and I haven't grown tired of his look. But that day will come, I'm sure of it. Maybe it's already here for you. If so, consider this a friendly little PSA: you can alter your hunter once for free, and the voucher to do so is now available.

The one-time-use voucher will let you change your hunter's gender, physical appearance, and cosmetic appearance. It will not let you switch your name, your Palico's name, or your Palico's appearance.

If you're feeling confident in your character-designing abilities, just follow the appropriate link below. Capcom says it will offer "more vouchers for purchase at a later day," so try not to rush.

News:: Sega has started teasing a new Sonic racing game

Following recent rumors about a new Sonic racing game, Sega has begun teasing what looks to be exactly that -- a Sonic-centric racer with an "R" in its logo just like Sonic R for Sega Saturn.

Based on the teaser clip, Sonic and co. will drive vehicles in this outing.

It sounds like the game won't be the direct follow-up to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed that I've been dreaming of, but I'm of course willing to give it a fair chance all the same.

News:: Xbox One X packing in Sea of Thieves for one week

Microsoft is continuing to pack in new games with Xbox One X for a (very) limited time.

Rare's multiplayer pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves releases on Tuesday, and at select retailers, it'll be digitally bundled with Xbox One X ($500). The promo runs from March 18 to March 24.

As a reminder, the game can run at native 4K with higher-res textures and shadows on Xbox One X.

There's also an Xbox One S bundle containing a 1TB hard drive, a digital copy of Sea of Thieves, one month of Xbox Live Gold, and one month of the Xbox Game Pass. That's out March 20 for $300.

News:: Track-painting racer Trailblazers is worth watching

Trailblazers won me over with its simple but intriguing concept. It's a three-on-three futuristic racing game in which you'll paint the track as you race and gain boost while riding over your team's color. Today, we've got another look at the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch-bound game.

I don't think this will blow anyone away, but it looks like a neat take on the genre, for sure.

Trailblazers is due out in May on all platforms and, once again, I have to commend it for having local support. It'll be playable in two- and four-player split-screen as well as six-player online.

News:: Sonic Mania Plus releases this summer with two new characters

This afternoon at SXSW, Sega announced Sonic Mania Plus, an expanded version of the hit throwback platformer coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this summer.

Sonic Mania Plus features Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel as bonus playable characters, a new Encore Mode that'll give existing players another reason to go through Sonic Mania again, an expanded four-player Competition Mode, and a 32-page art book. Physical copies will cost $30, and the new content will also find its way to digital owners via an update (with pricing TBD).

I don't know how much the rest of you care about reversible cover art, but the Sega Genesis-style box alone makes the physical release super tempting for me. Thirty bucks isn't bad at all.

News:: Review: Assassin's Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs

Assassin's Creed has spent more than a decade flirting with post-release content concepts that are out-there enough to sell. There was an alternate timeline where George Washington was an evil tyrant. There was a whole add-on that revolved around first-person Animus platforming. We even got to murder as Jack the Ripper.

These are always novel. Assassin's Creed has always been about twisting history to fit the whims of a video game's story. These offshoot DLCs push that to an extreme, taking advantage of their tangential nature as carte blanche to try something wild. They usually work in an entertaining-but-forgettable way.

The latest one, The Curse of the Pharaohs, is the best yet.

The British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) have listed their nominations for their 2018 Video Game Awards. The ceremony will take place in London next month, at an event hosted by comedian and video game fan Dara O'Brien.

A lot of last year's fan favourites are up to win the creepy-ass golden mask, with games including Cuphead, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Super Mario Odyssey, What Remains of Edith Finch, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Life is Strange all nominated in various categories. As the awards is Britain-based, the flag is being flown hard for titles such as Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, The Sexy Brutale and Monument Valley 2.

News:: Shovel Knight permanently discounted on Switch/PC if you own Specter of Torment

Yacht Club Games managed to deliver two amazing DLC campaigns on top of an already stellar core, and it has one more left for us still (and three amiibo to release).

While we wait for that King Knight-helmed "King of Cards" expansion Switch owners have a bit to celebrate over, as the studio is now permanently discounting the game for those of you who already bought Specter of Torment.

As a recap, the Switch originally launched with Specter of Torment as a timed exclusive, leaving those buyers in a precarious spot if they wanted to re-buy the original all over again. Now they can pick up the Treasure Trove edition (read: GOTY/Premium/Ultra) that comes with everything for 40% off. This deal also extends to Steam, GOG, and Humble Bundle on PC.

I don't know who this applies to as most of the people I've spoken to already own Shovel Knight in some form, but for those of you who were holding out, it paid off.

News:: Splatoon 2's weekly weapon is the heavy-hitting H-3 Nozzlenose D

It was recently revealed by Nintendo that once Splatoon 2 gets its 3.0 update, the weekly weapon may be ditched in favour of monthly batches of weapons instead. For now though, it's business as usual, and a new weapon joins the arena-shooter's arsenal tonight.

The H-3 Nozzlenose D is this week's tool of the trade. It is a variant on the L-3 Nozzlenose, instead substituting speed for attack power. It has good range and fires in stacatto, three-round bursts, capable of splatting an opponent in fast order. This new "D" variant comes equipped with a Suction Bomb sub and an Ink Armour special.

Splatoon 2 fans have been inundated with info over the last fortnight, from details on the upcoming X Rank, to new features and gear from next month's Octo Expansion, as well as the arrival of new maps and weapons. All of which lends credence to the fact that Nintendo still have a lot of faith in the colourful team-shooter.

The H-3 Nozzlenose D goes live in Splatoon 2 tonight in North America, whihc Europe and Japan following early tomorrow.

News:: ‘ARK: Survival Evolved’ brings dinosaurs to your phone this Spring

Open-world survival game ARK: Survival Evolved was one of the bigger early access games back in 2015, eventually launching a couple of years later on PS4, Xbox One and Steam and gathering 13 million players in the process. Now the title is coming to mobile devices as a free-to-play game. Publisher Studio Wildcard promises the same online experience as the PC and console versions, including a massive island to explore, more than 80 dinosaurs to tame, crafting and building features and multiplayer tribes to join.

Developer War Drum Studios (Bully, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Max Payne Mobile) launched a closed beta for ARK today (iOS-only for now), with a full launch set for later this Spring on both iOS and Android.

News:: WTF is Destructoid? Today we celebrate 12 years of madness

Gather 'round Papa Niero, it's that time of year to tell our best story: The story of how Destructoid came to be as a video game community. Most of you already know the story, so please humor us as we enlighten the new people just recently discovering us. Oh and that's Lyle Rath in the helmet, there's no way I'm at skinny and metal. Maybe 12 years ago. How time flies, eh? I'm pushing 40 now and it's still such a pleasure to do this. It's still my favorite thing in the world, I can't picture myself doing anything but being your publisher.

Before I get into our back story, I want to thank everyone over at @EGLXofficial for having at their gaming expo. Just like them, we Voltron'ed-up with the Enthusiast Gaming family and it was one of our best years ever. We've lived long enough to go from a bunch of dorks who wouldn't be allowed into a gaming convention to becoming part of one of the biggest video game networks in the history of the Internet. In fact, when we add up all our sites we reach over 100 million unique readers a month. That's insane! These guys really get it and I'm very happy to be working with them.

So how did we get here? WTF is Destructoid?  I wrote a little something for our EGLX convention trade show magazine which I'll share with you here.

News:: A look into a dude who has spent $70,000 on Fate/Grand Order

Sometimes, when I'm out and about, insanely bored, and don't have the dexterity to play a normal game, I'll start up Crazy Taxi Tycoon on my phone. It's a simple game, for a simple man like myself who just wants to tap at my screen until I earn a crazy boost and can hear "All I Want" from The Offspring.

Thankfully, it's also something I've maybe only ever played for a few minutes at a time and I've never even spent a single cent on it. However, for 31-year-old Daigo, Fate/Grand Order seems to take up every spare moment -- and potentially -- every spare dollar he has.

News:: Dragon Ball FighterZ currently has the most entrants at EVO 2018

August 3 will see the Evolution Fighting Tournament 2018 return to Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Once again, the best fighting game players in the world will gather to battle it out on all of the top digital slapfests of the day.

EVO organiser Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar sent out a tweet yesterday, featuring a list of this year's main games, ranked in order of entrants thus far. Currently, Bandai Namco's anime brawler Dragon Ball FighterZ has the most entrants, followed by Capcom's Street Fighter V and then Namco's Tekken 7.

Bringing up the rear are Smash titles Melee and Wii-U, followed by Arc System Works' Guilty Gear Xrd and the unreleased BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle are next. NetherRealm's DC Comics fighter, Injustice 2, rounds off the list.

Of course, there are still months to go until everyone squares up, and EVO notoriously has a burst of sign-ups in its ultimate hours. Still, its cool to see Dragon Ball FighterZ making such an impact on its EVO debut, in what is proving to be a punch-up so popular, that even Producer Tomoko Hiroki is stepping up to throw down.

EVO 2018 takes place in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, between August 3-5.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II is changing loot crates and revamping progression next week

It's been a long time coming, but DICE has detailed its progression overhaul for Star Wars Battlefront II.

There are a number of changes planned for March 21. As of that date, gameplay-affecting items can only be earned through gameplay. Players will earn XP (and, in turn, skill points) for their individual classes, heroes, and ships that can be used to unlock or upgrade Star Cards. As EA puts it, "progression is now linear." Everything you've unlocked up until now will still be there after the update.

As for the dreaded loot crates, they're still in the game, but in a different capacity. Crates will no longer contain Star Cards, and they can't be bought; instead, they'll be earned from logging in daily, clearing milestones, and completing timed challenges. These new loot crates will come with "Credits or cosmetic items, such as emotes or victory poses, but nothing that impacts gameplay."

With these changes in mind, you might be wondering where the microtransaction hooks are; they've gotta be in here somewhere, right? As expected, EA is pushing the cosmetic angle. Beginning in April, Star Wars Battlefront II will offer "new looks for your heroes and troopers directly by using either Credits (earned in-game) or Crystals (available to purchase in-game and through first-party stores)."

All in all, I'm happy with these changes and wish they would've been there from the get-go. There's a detailed FAQ over here that's worth a look if you still play Battlefront II or are thinking of returning. One interesting note: "All Star Cards and Weapons are going to be unlocked, at the Epic level, in Arcade mode so you can try out the best combinations and help you identify how you want to spend your Skill Points."

News:: Dota 2's massive International tournament moved to Canada

In case you haven't been paying attention to one of the biggest eSports tournaments of the past seven years or so, Valve has been running Dota 2's International event for a while now. It kicked off in Cologne, Germany back in 2011, and every subsequent year it's been held in Seattle in either July or August.

That changes in 2018 though, as Valve has moved the tournament to Canada. It'll take place on August 24-25 in Vancouver, so if you're planning on attending get your passport sorted now! Tickets will go on sale on March 23 on Ticketmaster's Canadian branch, and will run you $125 CAN for the first four days, with the finals ticket priced at $250.

It's great to see Canada get some love! Seattle is one of my favorite places in the world, but spreading Dota 2 around is probably great for the game.

News:: '#WarGames' is the 'Rosemary's Baby' of interactive cinema

The line between film and video game is blurring. Much of this has to do with the shifting ways we consume media: Our screens are smaller, more personal and imbued with interactivity. They're meant to be tapped, swiped, clicked and pinched, and we expect the images under the glass to respond to every prod. We're pulling these screens closer and closer to our bodies, teaching them to respond to physiological output and unconscious gestures, until eventually, they'll simply be a part of our anatomy. Everything will be interactive.

News:: Former PlayStation CEO Jack Tretton is forming a company to assist the indie scene

Former PlayStation head-honcho Jack Tretton has announced plans to start up a new company, with aims to provide both financial and managerial assistance to small studios on the independent circuit.

Interactive Gaming Ventures will use Tretton's industry knowledge, network and economical/financial resources to help smaller developers get their projects onto the market. Surprisingly, Tretton, who announced the company in an interview with Business Insider, has also stated that IGV will not own the rights to any game that it helps publish.

"Our interest is really in the game itself," said the former PlayStation President. "We invest specifically in the game itself. The developer owns the IP, the developer controls the actual process of developing... We'll provide financial support with milestones, when the game ultimately goes to market, we'll take a percentage of the income in return for our investment. It's really more of a royalty-based investment."

Tretton obviously has more than enough know-how to help struggling developers get their wares out into the world. The Boston-born marketer was VP of Sales for Activision in his formative years, before joining Sony in 1995 and having a hand in the original PlayStation. Tretton would be named President of SCE in 2006, succeeding Kaz Hirai, and would go on to lead the brand through the new millennium, before stepping down in 2014.

News:: 'Battlefront II' will finally make in-game progression fair next week

Electronic Arts' long, awkward nightmare over Star Wars Battlefront II's multiplayer progression might finally be over. With next week's patch, dubbed the "Progression" update, EA promises that Star Cards (power-ups) or any other item that impact gameplay will only be earned through gameplay from here on out -- not via paid loot crates. Previously, EA had adjusted and removed some of the pay-to-win aspects, saying that eventually real-money transactions would return.

News:: Review: Super Seducer: How to Talk to Girls

One of the great things about art is its ability to surprise you. Most people know what they like and don’t like, but every once in a while there is some piece of entertainment that comes along and blows away expectations. You think it’s going to be awful because of the trailers or the cast or whatever, but when you actually take time to experience it, you find that initial impression did you a disservice. This art you thought you’d hate is actually something that strikes a chord with you, teaching you a valuable lesson about not judging a book by its cover.

But enough about Deadly Premonition, let’s talk about Super Seducer.

News:: Starcraft favorite Fenix is the next Heroes of the Storm character

As announced during a talk at BlizzCon 2017, Blizzard is slowing down a bit when it comes to Heroes of the Storm hero releases. While the original cadence for the last few years has been "three to four weeks," our last hero, the warden Maiev, dropped on February 6.

Fans were so used to the original schedule that they've been pining for a new hero tease or announcement of any kind, and as of this week the publisher has acquiesced with a small clip for Fenix of Starcraft fame. As a reminder, Fenix is a zealot of the Protoss, a great warrior and friend of Raynor who was injured in battle. He was then given another chance at glory in a Dragoon vehicle, which is shown off prominently in the teaser.

There's a lot of speculation as to whether or not his Dragoon form is a passive that triggers when he dies, an ultimate, or his permanent form, but we'll know more soon enough as Fenix presumably gears up to enter the PTR.

News:: Start the weekend with Futaba and Fuuka in new Persona Dancing trailers

The St. Patrick's Day weekend brings a big party atmosphere to a lot of cities. Two of Persona's cheeky gals are already getting the festivities started in these new trailers for Atlus' upcoming games Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night.

The two videos feature Persona 3's somewhat-shy Fuuka Yamagishi, who forgets her typical reserved nature to start throwing shapes on the dance floor. Persona 5 is repped by computer whiz-kid Fuuka Sakura, who, quickly and easily, became one of the game's most popular and beloved characters within the community.

The nerd gurls aren't alone in their respective trailers, however, as they are eventually joined by the comical Junpei Iori and conflicted school-prez Makoto Niijima. Lovely stuff.

Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night
and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night are set for release in Japan May 24 on PS4 and PS Vita. A box set, which includes Persona 4: Dancing All Night, will also be available. We are still yet to receive word on a Western release.

After researching more than 60 gaming mice, testing 12 with the help of four panelists, and playing over 50 hours of Overwatch with them, we've concluded the Razer DeathAdder Elite is the best gaming mouse for most people. Our panel testers preferred the DeathAdder Elite for its simplicity and its comfort through extended gaming sessions, which isn't surprising considering previous models of the DeathAdder have been our picks for years.

Here's a recap of what's been confirmed for Kingdom Hearts III so far in terms of worlds: Tangled, Toy Story, Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc., Hercules, Twilight Town, and Yen Sid's Tower. We also know that "no Final Fantasy worlds" are in. For a nebulous "2018" release that's not too bad in terms of info, but a new leak might have given us more insight if it's correct.

News:: New Infinity War trailer drops as tickets go on sale

Get hype, people.

Avengers: Infinity War is barrelling towards us like the damn hulkbuster, and with this new trailer it's hard not to get goosebumps. This is our best look yet at Thanos in action, and features a heavier dose of Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and Gamora. What's insane is that you can still ask where half the prolific cast is, and all of that missing cast would be headliners in any other film.

We should also give credit where credit is due: Alan Silvestri's Avengers theme is right up there with some of John Williams' classics. Its hard not to hear the them as the Avengers A comes on the screen and not feel like you need to go see this movie right now.

Whatever your feelings about Marvel's films, you gotta respect what they've done to pull this together.
