News::Best Shooter of 2014

gamrReview's Zach Frimpong: "Even gamers who don't enjoy modern shooters must admit that 2014 was a genuinely good year for the shooter genre. The diversity seen in the genre this year greatly surpasses that of previous year. We saw the resurgence of over-the-top, mind-numbing action with Wolfenstein: The New Order and Far Cry 4, greater speed in the genre than ever before with Titanfall and Sunset Overdrive, and, overall, a greater emphasis placed on fun before anything else. Our faith in the shooter genre has been waning for a couple of years now, but 2014 has redeemed the shooter genre in our eyes."

News::Shroud of the Avatar Trailblazes Future of RPG Community Involvement - Richard Garriott Interview

GamersNexus: "Shroud of the Avatar, even though still in a pre-alpha build, has pulled together a community that seems every bit as passionate as the most rabidly loyal modder communities. This isn't surprising given that Lord British has ruled over his people with a fair and just hand, regardless of what those bitter people on the Serpent Isle claim, since the release of Akalabeth back in 1979. Industry legend Richard Garriott returned to the Fantasy RPG scene around the same time as counterpart space-sim legend Chris Roberts started his campaign, both designers opting to take a crowd-sourced approach to content creation."

News::PlayDevil's Game Of The Year 2014 Awards

PlayDevil's writing team have posted their Games of 2014. Want to know what they are? Read on to find out. Here is a snippet: "Many of the biggest games were noticeably delayed into 2015; and 2014 was somehow even worse than last year for games shipping in completely broken states, and then took even longer to fix (if at all, in the case of Halo: MCC and most noticeably DriveClub, which I personally doubt will ever come to PS Plus at this point). And I wont even mention the vitriol and politics that has plagued the internet in the latter half of the year. But, on that depressing start, 2014 was not a write-off year either."

First, a quick thank you to Destructoid reader lunarwhale for bringing this Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels speedrun to my attention. I naively thought I'd watch a minute or two, tops, right before going to bed, but ended up sticking through to the trippy Fantasy World finale. No regrets.

While this isn't the most impressive speedrun to come out of Awesome Games Done Quick 2015, it has something better: heart. I grinned every time GameJ06 commanded Bowser to "jump!"

If youre looking for something to keep your hands busy while watching TV, I can think of few games better suited than The Witcher Adventure Game. In fact, I would advise that you play it this way, because there isnt really enough here for the game to hold your interest by itself.

Video Game Pre-Order Bonuses Are Getting Stranger Every Day

Pre-ordering video games is, in general, a Very Bad Idea, as we've learned from the likes of SimCity, Battlefield 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Assassin's Creed Unity, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and many many more. So these days, video game publishers have to get a little more creative when it comes to getting you to blindly buy their games.

Uncharted 2’s Museum Level Sucked

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was an immediate game-changer when Naughty Dog released it in 2009. As a high octane love letter to Indiana Jones and the 1950s adventure serials that inspired it, it set an ideal expectation for the adventure genre — never give the player an opportunity to breathe. Every objective must serve the plot, every visual must impress. Every gunfight must be organic and unique to its setting, and spring from the context of the narrative, rather than simply exist for its own sake.
