News::Wargame: Airland Battle Pixel Judge review

Pixel Judge: "The Cold War saw roughly 50 years of enormous military build-up that resulted in pretty much nothing. And while I'm grateful for not being a handful of irradiated ash floating somewhere over Poland or Hungary, it's still a shame that we didn't see NATO tanks tested against Warsaw Pact armor back when it was still modern and crewed by decently trained crews. Apparently, some French guys thought the same when they made Wargame: European Escalation , which focused on some plausible NATO vs. Pact confrontations in Central Europe. The sequel, Wargame: Airland Battle ups the ante and brings the battles to Scandinavia."

News::The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Preview - E3 2013 (NGN)

New Game Network: "The Witcher franchise from developers CD Projekt Red has become one of the better known breakthrough stories of recent times. The original RPG game was met with so much success, it turned out to be one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year. A sequel that followed stayed true to PC roots, but significantly changed the flow of the game and saw the release of console versions as well. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the next chapter in the series, and a supposed conclusion of the storyline for Geralt. We had a chance to see the game running at E3 and speak with the developers."

News::Gunpoint Review - PixlBit

PixlBit | "Its easy to attach labels to games. We want to know if its a first person shooter or a platformer, but sometimes thats a bad idea. We end up sticking games into categories which become their go-to description and dont communicate what a games real essence is. For this reason, Im not even going to try and compartmentalize Gunpoint because that would be doing it a huge disservice. Even though I have no idea what sort of game Gunpoint is, I know its a ton of fun to play."

News::New F-Zero unlikely, Miyamoto unsure where to take series

Mario Kart 8 is extending into a less traditional direction after the somewhat tired Mario Kart 7 , but it appears the future isn't so bright for Nintendo's lesser-known, higher-octane racing series, F-Zero. The Mario Kart series has been plugging away for years, brand recognition in tow, but it's been along time since Captain Falcon has had a game to ply his adrenaline-fueled wares outside of the Super Smash Bros. series.

Speaking to IGN, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto said, "I think where I struggle is that I don’t really have a good idea for what’s new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again. ... I don’t know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero," then trotted out the well-worn "We come to the show and we bring a lot of great franchises and everyone says, 'Oh, well, where’s this game that I want to play? Where’s something new?' I only have so much capacity."

In an Entertainment Weekly piece from 2007, Miyamoto talked about working with outside studios on properties like F-Zero and Star Fox, stating, "Consumers got very excited about the idea of those games, but the games themselves did not deliver." Given how well received and well loved F-Zero GX (developed in collaboration with SEGA) was, I'm going to take this to simply mean the game didn't sell as well as Mario Kart and thus isn't getting the same consideration.

So a new F-Zero won't be coming from collaboration with outside studios (despite this year's amazing Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon being developed by the independent Next Level Games) and, internally, Miyamoto doesn't have any ideas for the franchise. Rest in peace, Cap'n. At least for now.

News::Video: Check out Pikmin 3's bingo battle mode

A Nintendo representative walks us through the 2-player versus mode "Bingo Battle" in Pikmin 3, where you must command your troops to mine resources to match pieces on a bingo board. Resources are limited, so you can block your opponent by mining pieces they need most. This was one of our most anticipated games of E3, and one of the stronger titles in this winter's lukewarm Wii U lineup.

Pretty fun stuff, and while not terribly difficult to explain this is certainly not Candy Crush Saga. You're going to need to find someone who smells Mid-Core or smarter if your trash-talking bingo session is going to be more fun than chilling with grandma at the parlor.

News::7 Future Neo/Post-Apocalyptic Cities Gaming Needs

We have so much future but less settings that to our own home. This used to be handled by adding New or Neo in front of the term and changing the realm itself to be more futuristic and glossy, but maintain the same feel. Examples extend from New New York (twenty seven of them to be precise) to Neo Tokyo in Akira, which brought motorcycles and deadly psychics into the mainstream lexicon. Gaming should take once again from the world around it and provide a few new neo cities, celebrate the future through our own cultural diversity and love of advanced threats and weapons.

News::An extensive look at Battlefield 4's Spectator Mode

Battlefield 4 producer Daniel Matros has a lot to say about the game's Spectator Mode, which was revealed last week during E3. Can you blame him? Inquiring minds must know everything.

"Spectator Mode will play a pivotal role in our support of the competitive gaming scene," writes DICE, "and we also recognize that many players will use it to make great "Only in Battlefield" videos, analyze the game, learn how to become better players, and seeing [memorable] moments in great Battlefield 4 matches. We are continuing to develop Spectator Mode with all of these functions in mind."

In this chat, he runs down a pre-alpha build featuring the different views: first-person, third-person, free cam, and tabletop with picture-in-picture. Watching other people play, particularly in a full 64-person match, should be mesmerizing.

What about would-be spectators playing Battlefield 4 on consoles? "We'll see," says Matros.

News::Hatesnake3D is a surreal kaleidoscope of snake survival

Indie Buskers is a group of developers who participate in game jams to help pay the bills. Rat King is one of those developers, consisting of a two-person team with a pretty diverse portfolio. In the most recent Indie Buskers game jam, Rat King created Hatesnake3D, which is best described by developer Friedrich Hanisch with the following:

You're a space-snake in a box, every 10 seconds your tail becomes a wall, you can use bombs, and the colors are pretty strange. There are other snakes and boxes and wtf

As a product of the game jam, Hatesnake3D was previously only available to supporters, but it is now playable for free on Kongregate. Give it a try for some free, nonsensical arcade action.

News::This Assassin's Creed IV footage is admittedly slick

I'm looking forward to Black Flag in spite of the franchise it belongs to. That's made all the more evident after this well-put-together demonstration out of E3, which really sells me on the idea of a big-budget pirate game even if it means yet another installment of Assassin's Creed.

I'll take what I can get, and if what I can get is seamlessly boarding a ship and taking it off into battle, then that'll do just fine. Interestingly, Ubisoft tinkered with a naval combat multiplayer mode, but things didn't work out. "It's something we tried at the beginning, but we didn't feel we can get it to a good enough level for this iteration," game director Ashraf Islamil told GameSpot.

News::Bethesda: Expecting Fallout info so soon is unrealistic

You know people are anxious to hear about your game when rumors that it was secretly shown behind closed doors at E3 make the rounds. That's what happened to Fallout earlier this week -- the rumor, that is. Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines has since spoken about the inevitable (albeit unannounced) next installment to Polygon, stating: "[Fans] have been clammering for a Fallout game for a long time now. What people need to understand -- whether it is Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane or anybody -- expecting information like that in any short period of time after they moved off one project to the other is really unrealistic.

"We are not into annual franchises -- just trying to spin out a version of our game year, after year, after year -- like, we have never done that, I don't see that it is something that we are doing anytime soon," said Hines. "But that doesn't mean that we are going to take our time and wait six or seven years in between a game that a studio puts out. But these are big games that take a long time and folks need to understand that we have a very certain way of going about things."

While Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim developer Bethesda Game Studios is indeed working on its next game, Hines says making assumptions about the project is a "bad idea." Even if it doesn't end up being a next-gen Fallout , we're all but guaranteed one will arrive eventually.

News::Video: Is Nintendo's holiday lineup strong enough?

Yesterday we spent some hands-on time with Nintendo's holiday lineup for 2013, and talked about their strong core gamer titles for 2014. We saw some very cute and fun games that my family will surely enjoy, and pondered how the hell a salesperson would explain Pikmin 3 to the world. With the PS4 and Xbox One making a huge splash this holiday season it seemed to us that Nintendo was really playing it safe, or was holding something back to announce last minute this Christmas. Nintendo has said it has no plans for a price cut, so could it be a crazy bundle? Something else? Check out Hamza's analysis and let us know what you think in the comments below.
