News:: Need a good cry? Check out Did You Know Gaming's extended Satoru Iwata video

It's weird to think it's only been a little more than 15 months since Satoru Iwata died. With how quickly news comes and goes in this modern age, it feels like it was years ago. But it wasn't. It was July 11, 2015. I still remember the story we published here at Destructoid and the lovely and beautiful comments you, the readers, posted in it.

I was always fascinated by Iwata during his tenure as the president of Nintendo, and in his passing, was captivated by all the different stories about his earlier years and how his programming expertise saved several of the games we know and love.

He truly was one-of-a-kind, and if you still don't know the legend of Satoru Iwata, set aside 20 minutes for this touching video on his life from the Did You Know Gaming crew.

Both teams came into the day with two wins so far this season, and no one expected either side to easily walk away with another. It was Revival, however, who came away empty handed, losing a hard fought series 3-2 to their mid-table rivals.

News:: What games do you play when you're feeling down?

It's been one year since I moved out of my parents' place and started living with my now wife out in the San Francisco Bay Area. I've had five jobs in the past year, and sometimes, it's hard to get out of bed without thinking dark thoughts like does anyone even really want me or can I really find a satisfying career in this day and age? I think it's no secret or shame that we game for some kind of escapism from our terrible, terrible lives stuck in this mortal coil.

But what do you play when you're feeling sad? Do you cheer yourself up with some kind of head-to-head multiplayer, depriving another person's happiness for your own? Or maybe you grind away at something mentally involving like a survival-crafting game to take your mind off things? What do you play when you're feeling down? Here are just a few of the games I play after I've sunken particularly low.

News:: If VR is the future, I'm stuck in the past

Not too long ago, Oculus Rift founder and guy with a cartoon rabbit's name Palmer Luckey sent out a tweet sharing his excitement for the future of VR:

This came at the end of a couple tweets where Luckey told people not to worry about bad coverage of VR games and technology because the revolution of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality gaming will be so much bigger than a bad review here or there. Since the launch of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, coverage of VR hasn't exactly been glowing. Many feel there aren't enough good games out there to justify the cost and a lot of the promises and ideas presented during the exhaustive alpha and beta stages of development have yet to materialize.

But this has changed leading up to this week's launch of the PlayStation VR. I've heard it referred to as the first mass-market VR headset. With more than 40 million PlayStation 4 owners out there, there are millions of potential customers who could be singing its praises by the end of the year. With its comparatively low entry price and lineup of launch-window titles, the PlayStation VR could be the start of a consistent and positive conversation about VR, instead of the arguably muddled one we've had so far.

It's a conversation I will be unable to participate in because VR simply doesn't work for me. I don't mean that in an "Oh, I don't think it's that cool" type of way, I mean the technology literally does not work for me.

News:: Final round Battlefield 1 digital deals from PC to Xbox One

If you're going to go through the trouble of enlisting early in Battlefield 1, now's the time to do it. In terms of deals here are what's out there: PC Gamers are getting discounts on the standard edition; console gamers can get gift card bonuses with either the Early Enlister or standard editions. If you have an Xbox One and want to pre-load, go with the Microsoft Store who is offering Xbox One digital codes with a $10 bonus gift card.

These Xbox One codes are sent via email instantly and you can begin pre-loading. PS4 gamers, or Xbox gamers with patience should go physical at Best Buy for $10 in Rewards (and a 20% discount for GCU members). PC gamers can get a 25% discount at GMG on the Standard Edition from $60 to only $45.

In new releases this weekend, Shadow Warrior 2 is a rousing success. On Steam you'll see about 95% positive reviews from users. The publisher killed all discounts across the web right up to the game's release, but it's slightly back on at GMG with a 15% discount + 5% off stacking coupon getting the price down from $40 to $32.29.

In other top deals this week two PS4 console deals haven't gotten the attention they deserve on eBay Deals. A new low has been achieved on a brand new PS4 by $20 with a drop to $239.99 plus free shipping (Remember when the PS4 was $400? The robot with the price history database does.). Probably a better deal in the long run is the PS4 Slim Uncharted 4 bundle for $309.99 with two "free" games Overwatch and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain thrown in the mix. If you can't wait the 1.5 months till Black Friday, these are the best bet.

News:: Learn how to make 20 iOS games this weekend for 20 bones

Don't waste another weekend watching Rick and Morty reruns with Doritos all over your chest (full disclosure: I may have recently done this). Get inspired and reinvent yourself as a mobile game developer this weekend. Why buy a game for a buck when you can build it yourself?

Check out this deal: 20 different iOS game-building courses for 20 bucks is now on sale at the Destructoid Store. This is a limited-time sale on a bundle that includes four separate lessons in one package, hosted with no time limit on StackCourses. They're basically giving the courses away so you can try them out. We have more courses too if you get hooked. This is a great one to start with and it's almost free.

Can it be even cheaper? Yes, it can. You can also get $10 off your order if you refer a friend, so that's like 50 cents a course. Ridic.

The lessons are aimed at novice programmers who have never built a game in their lives, and start slowly with simple word and math-based games. By the end of the course you'll know how to build action games with stick figures and ninjas and platforms: All of the classes mimic popular best-selling games you're already familiar with, and example source code is also included. Best of all there's no time limit on the classes, so you can study at your own pace. By Lesson 3, you'll be building your own Candy Crush and Flappy Bird clones in no time! FlappyToid? Flappy Chungus? Dare to dream.

Learning game design is hard but building small little game experiments is definitely the best way to go about it. Just ask Sir Churros, I think he'd approve!

News:: Final Fantasy XIV's exclusive Fanfest fight is simple, but fascinating

Square Enix has been running Final Fantasy XIV trial (read: boss fight) challenges for years now. They held them for multiple Primals, as well as Odin at the first Fanfest in 2014. But this week at Fanfest in Vegas I experienced my first one -- an exclusive trial featuring Proto Ultima, a different take on an existing enemy centered around a 24-person alliance.

It was a relatively straight-forward encounter, but the thrill of getting together and planning a strategy with 23 other people in roughly 10 minutes is what really made it special for me.

News:: You can use the PS VR's cinematic mode to play Xbox One or Wii U games

It turns out that Sony's new PlayStation VR is compatible with any device that features a HDMI-out port, such as the Xbox One or Wii U, albeit in a heavily limited form.

According to a video by Digital Foundry (which you can view below), third party devices such as consoles or PCs will recognise Sony's virtual reality headset as a standard 1080p HD TV. This does mean that while you won't be able to access any virtual reality features with devices that aren't the PlayStation 4, you could easily use the headset in lieu of a television or monitor for your other game consoles or PC.

The image outputted by the third-party devices devices will then be displayed using the PS VR's 'cinematic mode,' appearing to the player as a large 2D screen.

One thing of note is that even if you're not sending video from a PS4 to the PS VR headset, the device must still be connected to Sony's current generation console via the USB port in order for 'cinema mode' to function.

I'm curious to see what would happen if you plugged a PS4 into an Xbox One's HDMI-in port before sending video from Microsoft's console to the PS VR headset. My guess? Additional input lag.
