News::Steamworks made available for all developers

Steamworks, the API that drives Steam’s backend, has been made available for free for any developers that wish to submit games to Steam Greenlight.

By using Steamworks, developers will be able to utilize Steam’s variety of network services relatively easily. By implementing the service, they’ll have access to things like matchmaking, anti-cheat services, and cloud saves. By downloading the Steamworks SDK, they will be able to test all of these services before being accepted into Valve’s store itself.

Now, this isn’t a huge change, as anyone accepted through the Greenlight system is automatically granted access to Steamworks, but it could be a step towards giving developers the option to self-publish on Steam, rather than having to go through the curation process.

We’ve sent word to Valve to ask for more information.

News::Amiga Forever 2013 Review - GamesReviews

From GamesReviews: "After downloading my copy of Amiga Forever, I came across a friend who was so excited for this emulator that hed changed his status to Amiga Forever on Skype. What Id taken as a simple emulator (with a little hype behind it) was actually something that others had supported for years (since 1997), people who had awaited the official release over modern AAA titles. What was it about this pack that got these people so excited? What can Amiga Forever do that other such emulators fail to?"

News::TGS-Bad Bots Review

Bad Bots is a game that features many different styles, mostly focusing on a retro side-scrolling shooter feel with a fun and engaging story. Like most games in this genre there are many areas that are done beautifully, and some areas that are lacking some innovation. The game stars Sam McRae, a mechanic on the Titan Hauler a cargo ship, and to no surprise of the player, must face several bad bots who are programmed to kill all humans! With the story being simple enough, the game is fast paced enough to keep it intriguing. The cutscenes are all done in a comic book style way, which is a great way to show the story with the period, and the writing is clever and witty at times.

News::Kaz Hirai says PlayStation 4 is 'all about the gamers'

Loud and clear, Sony boss man Kazuo Hirai believes that the PlayStation 4 must target core gamers from the outset before expanding for others mind share. Speaking with Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg during a talk at the D11 conference, Hirai stated “I fundamentally believe that the initial market that we need to make sure we appeal to with any new platform … is really the gaming audience ... They will be the supporters of your platform and they will help propel the installed base.”

Hirai confirmed that the PS4 will have non-gaming applications, but says the focus on those will come "after we establish the platform as a videogame platform. For us, it’s all about the gamers.”

These statements of course stand in stark contrast to the recent attitude we've seen from Microsoft and the Xbox One, pushing entertainments apps and TV at the grand reveal of what was supposed to be a gaming console.

Things have been improved and some major changes have been applied to Anomaly 2. In fact, the features that gamers wanted in the previous game have finally come to light in this sequel. Even though Anomaly 2 is comprised of non-stop action, there is still a great deal of strategy involved in completing the available missions. Dont even consider some kind of blitz run because you will definitely lose. Strategy is important to the players survival; you need to know when to be aggressive and when to be tactical with your maneuvers.

James Conrad's review of Skyward Collapse. "God games are fun stuff. Who doesnt want to be God for a day? Do what ever the hell you want, kill all humans or dont, the list of fun activities goes on. Sadly the one flaw with such games is that playing God does get old pretty fast. Theres little challenge to it. Create what you want, then destroy it. See an obstacle, kill it. Its straightforward and after some time can get monotonous. Perhaps that was why the people over at Arcen Games decided to change things up in their RTS-God-Game-Thing, Skyward Collapse..."

DHGF: I think my point of all these numbers Im tossing out here, is that Turbine is not trying to rip you off. Theyve put together two new areas and 10 new quests and then added a bunch of new bonuses and iconic classes for people to play while giving you a good value even if you dont end up using half of what you get. The bonuses arent nearly as good if you dont preorder and I knew a lot of people who regretted not picking up the preorder later when they had to get the whole expansion for Menace of the Underdark anyway or had to wait months for it to show up in the game store. News::Using SCIENCE to learn the effects of killing used games

With all this hubbub over used games and whether eliminating them would be good or bad for the overall industry, it was only a matter of time before SCIENCE was brought in to drop some truth bombs. Professors Masakazu Ishihara (New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business) and Andrew Ching (University of Toronto Rotman School of Management) have closely studied the Japanese gaming market, where pre-owned business is much more significant than it is in the US, and shared their findings in a paper published on December 15, 2012.

Their verdict? Not quite what you'd expect.

Ishihara and Ching found that, all else remaining equal, eliminating the used market would result in a 10% drop in publishers' profits per game. However, if average retail prices for software were to drop by a third across the board -- $40 down from $60 -- publishers could actually see a 19% rise in profits. Of course, the profit increase scenario would only work if publishers agree to a reduced MSRP, the likelihood of which is up for debate.

Ishihara and Ching's study demonstrates that there are many factors involved in used game sales and purchases. Consumers assign value to their individual software purchases, and some of that value is derived from their ability to resell it down the road. Reduced retail prices could feasibly counterbalance the loss of resales.

No matter how you look at it, this is a far more complex situation than anyone could have imagined.

News::Resident Evil: Revelations Review (NintendoWorldReport)

"Revisiting the Queen Zenobia. Resident Evil: Revelations was my most-anticipated game for the 3DS, and I was thoroughly impressed with it last February. When the HD console version was announced earlier this year, I was happy to see that the Wii U would be getting some exclusive content. Now that Ive played through Revelations a second time, I can safely say that those Wii U features arent all that exciting, but more importantly, Revelations is still one of the best post-RE4 Resident Evil games. If you havent played it already, this is definitely the way to do so.I wont go into the core game hereyou can read my previous review for that informationIm just going to talk about whats changed for the console release.", writes NintendoWorldReport.

News::Gone Home, An Interview With Steve Gaynor

Its 1995 and youve just come back home from college. No one is there, your parents and your little sister are just gone. Where they went and why they seemed to be packing the house to move are what youll have to piece together from notes, pictures, and music clues that you find around the house. Welcome to Gone Home. Gone Home is the first game created by The Fullbright Company, a four person team based out of a house in Portland, Oregon. Founded by Steve Gaynor, Johnnemann Nordhagen, Karla Zimonja in 2012 and later bringing in Kate Craig. They have set out to make a game that takes the world building mechanic of finding items that explain the back story in most games (think voxophones in BioShock Infinite) and make that the core of the game.

News::Game of Thrones opening sequence recreated in StarCraft

Using the StarCraft II Cutscene Editor, YouTube user Tolkfan created the video above, which takes us across the continents of Westeros and Essos in a recreation of the opening sequence for Season 1 of HBO's Game of Thrones.

The fictional geography lesson begins with the Terrans in King's Landing, then heads north to Winterfell and The Wall, before finally panning east to Pentos. Bonus points awarded for the dragon-like Zerg near Daenerys's location and the rings in the beginning that were created using an invisible spinning pineapple.

While this isn't quite the coolest videogame representation of Westeros, that music always gets me ready for some good old fashioned political intrigue.

CCC says: "As a long-time fan of the Elder Scrolls franchise, I went into the Elder Scrolls Online both excitedly and tentatively. Sure, I was playing a brand new and entirely unique Elder Scrolls game, but I was also facing the possibility of having the iconic ES gameplay that Id come to love torn away from me and substituted with an amalgamation of MMORPG clichés. As a result, my expectations were a bit pessimistic at times. That is, they were until the folks over at Zenimax showed me an adventure too enthralling to ignore and too engaging to enter hesitantly."

News::Hands-on: The Elder Scrolls Online | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: "The Elder Scrolls Online is in the unusual (and perhaps unenviable) position of having to appeal to two kinds of player fans of the Elder Scrolls series and fans of the MMO. It would be silly to argue against the suspicion that, at a certain point, these two groups must overlap. Its that sweet spot of the Venn diagram that Zenimax is pitching to with its foray into the lots-of-people-fighting-at-once genre. It has already been pointed out that TESO looks to be leaning towards the tried and tested techniques of the MMO, rather than forging a distinct multiplayer world from Elder Scroll conventions, a la the broken yet personable Mortal Online. Having recently had a brief wander in Tamriel, it does seem to us that, as a game, it is certainly more World of Warcraft than Skyrim. Even if it does pay tribute to its forebears in terms of lore and world-building."

News::Double Fine announces Kickstarter for new strategy game

Double Fine made history last year with the Broken Age Kickstarter, bringing in over $3.3 million after asking fans to help fund it. Today, the industry darling developer announced a new Kickstarter campaign with hopes for a repeat performance.

Massive Chalice promises tactical battles similar to those found in X-COM or Final Fantasy Tactics, taking place over the course of many lifetimes. As a result, individual warriors will gain experience, age, and eventually die, but not before leaving behind offspring with similar traits.

As is often the case with Kickstarter games, no gameplay has been shown, but Double Fine's pedigree will likely carry this campaign to success with ease. As of this writing, only minutes after the launch of the campaign, Massive Chalice has already attained over $75,000 of its $725,000 goal.

News::Tim Schafer on battling Kickstarter fatigue – and why Microsoft needs to reach out to indies

Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has criticised studios for using Kickstarter as a source of “easy money”, and urged Microsoft to change its approach to indie developers.

Speaking before the launch of the studio’s new Kickstarter, Schafer explained that his studio has returned to crowdfund its next project because it offers unique interaction between creators and their audience, as demonstrated by the success of its first campaign.

“It’s been such a positive experience for us,” Schafer told us. “The money was great, but it’s also about community interaction and the kind of new era it helped usher in. I wondered if we should do it again and if it’s right to do it again – I didn’t think I could do another Kickstarter until I’d obviously finished the other project I was working on.”

Double Fine veteran Brad Muir is taking the lead this time around, and not only because Schafer wants to concentrate on developing the fruits of that first Kickstarter, Broken Age.

“I think some of the Kickstarters are overcomplicated, or seem to be treating it like it’s a store, or milking it for easy money,” said Shafer. “That’s why we’re putting a lot of thought into this project – it’s not another told timer coming back from the nineties, like me, and not an old game or tried and true licence, but actually a risky and new IP.”

“Broken Age is going to be going on for a while and I wanted to really focus on that. I really feel that there’s a trust between us and the backers and I wanted to finish that before I moved onto something else. But, y’know, that’s only one of our teams here at Double Fine, those other teams could either go back to publishers to fund their games, or they could go to Kickstarter. And because Kickstarter allows us to focus on the games and the fans, that’s really the road we want to take.”

Massive Chalice will be a PC, Mac and Linux title, with other formats to be considered later on. We asked Schafer whether he had had any dialogue with Sony or Microsoft on the subject of bringing his studio’s games to PS4 or Xbox One. “Sony has reached out to us and asked us our opinions about what we’d like to see with new platforms and they’ve been really good with indies – allowing them self-publish and entering into partnerships and stuff like that,” he replied. “Microsoft has been focused elsewhere up until now, I’ve kind of had my fingers crossed that hopefully they’ll change their minds about that because I think it’s really critical.”

“There are just too many options right now for indies as far as publishing goes. Steam is huge, mobile and all of those things are really profitable for indies so there’s too many reasonable and successful alternatives for indies to look towards – we don’t really need to go through the arduous process of acquiring a publisher that we don’t need just to be on a certain platform. I hope [Microsoft] figure it out.”

Would Double Fine ever return to the ‘traditional’ model, we asked? “We still have good publishing partners that we’re working with, but what Kickstarter means is that we only have to work with the good ones – we have other options and we don’t have to take a bad publishing deal any more,” added Schafer. “So as long as we still get good publishing partners we’ll still work with them, but it’d have to be a pretty good deal to compete with what you get from crowdfunding.”

News::Rayman Legends is great, but you already knew that

There aren't many games out there where you just know you're going to buy it after the second you see it in action. Rayman Legends is one such game, and I've played it on every platform it's coming out for now. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and yes, even the PlayStation Vita version which was just announced.

The demos I played were all based on underwater levels like the one you see in the video above. The stealth aspect was pretty neat, as you can't just go running through it without a care in the world like other levels. Then I got to play musical Mariachi Madness stage that was a lot of fun, but super difficult to master.

My hands-on time wrapped up by fighting this giant crazy robotic dragon that's going to require a lot of communication with your friends if you find yourself playing through it cooperatively. Communication in the form of "stop f*cking up and do what I say goddammit!" Trust me, it's fun.

Rayman is largely the same on each platform with some minor differences here and there. The important thing is that they all have wonderful visuals, the gameplay is solid, and the entire concept is so damn charming. Really, it's a no-brainer picking up Rayman Legends when it's released in September.

Book publisher Random House has entered the video game space with its new “narrative gaming experience” Black Crown. The interactive fiction game was written by author Robert Sherman, and is available to play for free.

“Black Crown represents Random House’s ambition to push the boundaries in online storytelling, experiment with new business models and launch a debut author in a groundbreaking way,” said Random House’s Dan Franklin.

News::Sonic has a new control system in Sonic Lost World

I got ridiculously excited when I saw the trailer for Sonic Lost World , but if the "Sonic Cycle" has taught us anything, it's that we should keep our expectations in check lest we disappoint ourselves for the umpteenth time. However, if the gameplay details described by SEGA and IGN's exclusive preview are any indication, many of Sonic's past shortcomings have been rectified.

First, let's get the threadbare story out of the way. Those new characters? They are known as the Deadly Six. Dr. Eggman tried to get them to do his bidding, but like clockwork, they were having none of that. Thus Eggman teams up with Sonic to combat their mutual threat. Don't let this temporary partnership trick you into thinking you'll be getting play time as the fat man himself; as in the past few Sonic titles, the hedgehog will be the only playable character. Others like Tails and Knuckles will make appearances, but they will remain on the sidelines.

Sonic's moves and abilities have been constantly refined for his 3D outings, but Lost World introduces some of the most significant tweaks to the series thus far. These changes come in the form of new speed shifting and parkour systems.

News::GRID 2 Review | CheatCC

CCC says: "GRID 2 actually has a story to tell, which is always shaky ground for the racing genre. Past racing titles have tried to spin us tales about highway bandits trying to retake the road from underneath the governments eyes, or hardcore street racers that dont play by the law. GRID 2 is far tamer than that."

Matthew Sawrey, Thunderbolt writes: You dont need to have seen Indie Game: The Movie to know that independent videogame development is a difficult road to travel. News::Final Fantasy Tactics S trailer shows the battle system

Mobile gamers with Apple products have had access to the original Final Fantasy Tactics for awhile now, though the good, pure, virtuous Android users out there have been left in the cold. Fortunately, the upcoming Final Fantasy Tactics S is coming to both platforms, so we can all finally get our tactical RPG on. Let's watch this trailer in excitement!

The video starts off about as expected, with some Final Fantasy Tactics Advance-style character art, but then the battles are shown and things get a bit perplexing. Is it just me, or do those look like traditional RPG battles rather than tactical RPG battles?

Don't get me wrong; this could still be good. It just seems strange to me to use "tactics" in the moniker, which implies very specific gameplay elements, and then eschew those elements in favor of something simpler.

From Strategyinformer.com: "Surprisingly enough, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded is not the longest game title Ive ever heard. It is at least the Kickstarter with the longest title, as well as certainly the smuttiest. One of the big successes from the Kickstarter boom, this remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry from 1987 (gasp!) significantly updates the creaking title.
