News:: You can tip Twitch streamers right from the mobile app

Bits are a staple of Twitch streaming. They're a way to back a streamer if you can't afford a full subscription, or want to offer some additional support. Until now, though, you couldn't easily buy them on your phone -- you had to either go through the web or wait until you got to a PC, by which point it might be too late. That won't be a problem for much longer, as Twitch is rolling out Bit purchases in its mobile apps. If you want to celebrate a streamer's victory, it's now just a few taps away... for an extra fee.

News:: New costumes, history map, and more coming to Fire Emblem Warriors on November 16

Nintendo has announced that an update will be coming to Fire Emblem Warriors on November 16. Much like its predecessor Hyrule Warriors, the update will contain free content available to all owners of the game. All sorts of additions, both big and small, will be included in the update.

I'd say it's more content than what the first major update of Hyrule Warriors contained.

News:: Global missions return for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon

We didn't do so hot with global missions in Pokémon Sun and Moon (at least not early on) but maybe things will turn out better with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. That's right -- the shared objectives are back, and they're once again asking us to collectively do something or other a whole lotta times.

The first of these missions is simple enough: catch 10 million Pokémon by November 28, 2017.

If we can do that, we will earn 2,000 Festival Coins for use at the shops in the Festival Plaza. If we miss the goal, we'll still walk away with 1,000 coins. And in either scenario, if your game is registered with the Pokémon Global Link, you'll get double the number of Festival Coins.

As a refresher, here's how to partake in global missions:

1. Enter Festival Plaza in Pokémon Ultra Sun or Pokémon Ultra Moon by selecting it in your in-game menu, which you’ll find by pressing the X Button.

2. Enter Festival Plaza’s central castle.

3. Speak to the global mission receptionist on the right and let her know you want to participate in the global mission.

4. Remember to return before the mission ends to sync your game to add to the global count! Once you’ve joined the global mission, talk to the receptionist to have your progress sent to the Pokémon Global Link. Also, if you’ve registered your game to a PGL account, simply connecting to the internet while in Festival Plaza will cause your game to sync automatically, sending your progress to the server.

There's a whole schedule lined up, too.

  • November 17–28, 2017: Catch a lot of Pokémon!
  • December 12–27, 2017: Have Fun Mantine Surfing!
  • January 9–23, 2018: Win at the Battle Agency!
  • February 6–20, 2018: Harvest Poké Beans!
  • March 6–20, 2018: Trade Pokémon at the GTS!
  • April 3–17, 2018: Hatch a lot of Eggs!
  • May 1–15, 2018: Get BP at the Battle Tree!
  • June 5–19, 2018: Play in Festival Plaza!

One last thing! Anyone who registers their copy of Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon and uses Game Sync between November 17 and January 30 will score a Master Ball.

News:: There's a new 'demo disc' for PlayStation VR owners

One of the major things Sony got right with the PlayStation VR launch was offering a demo disc as a physical pack-in and a free download. It was a tremendously useful way to get an overall feel for the tech, figure out which if any games caused discomfort, and show virtual reality to friends and family.

As such, I'm pleased to see Sony come out with a second demo disc. It's free to download from PlayStation Network as of today and takes up 15.2GB. There are a few repeat selections, but there are also newer and even unreleased games featured here including next year's mouse adventure Moss.

  • Battlezone (Rebellion)
  • Dino Frontier* (Uber Entertainment)
  • Eve: Valkyrie (CCP Games)
  • Fantastic Contraption* (Radial Games)
  • Job Simulator* (Owlchemy Labs)
  • Moss (Polyarc)
  • Raw Data* (Survios)
  • Rez Infinite* (Enhance Games)
  • Starblood Arena (Whitemoon Dreams)
  • Star Child (GameTrust)
  • The Persistence (Firesprite)
  • Thumper (Drool)
  • Tiny Trax (FuturLab)

(Note: Demos with an asterisk require PlayStation Move controllers.)

I'm keen for folks to try Dino Frontier, a light simulation game about building up a settlement with cowboys and dinosaurs as the Big Mayor. It's one of my favorite PSVR titles to date and it just doesn't come up as much as other worth-playing games like Rez Infinite, Thumper, and Job Simulator.

News:: Grand Theft Auto V is the US's best-selling game of all time

It's no secret that the Grand Theft Auto franchise makes money. Each game in Rockstar's flagship series is a massive critical success, adorned with rave reviews by nearly every gaming outlet, while remaining easily accessible and fun for just about anyone. Massive sales are a given, but just how well do these games sell? Well, Grand Theft Auto V, the latest entry, is now the best-selling game of all time in the United States.

In a news release from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has moved 85 million units, which, in terms of both revenue and units sold, makes it the US's best-selling game ever. The release consistently ranks both Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V as big sources of revenue in 2017, right behind NBA 2K18 and NBA 2K17. Despite Grand Theft Auto V initially hitting the market over four years ago, it still moves more units than more recent titles like XCOM 2

This is big news, but certainly not unexpected. Grand Theft Auto has always been a cash cow, and seeing it become the best-selling game in the States isn't all that surprising. Still, it's fascinating to witness the staying power of such a huge game on the market.

Grand Theft Auto Online has apparently had its most profitable quarter as well, likely due to "recurrent consumer spending" which saw an 84% increase for Take-Two year-over-year. Recurrent consumer spending is essentially microtransactions, and with the release of the infamous NBA 2K18 this year now standing alongside Grand Theft Auto Online, which has made absurd amounts of money from microtransactions, you can begin to understand why Take-Two wants to embed microtransactions into all future releases.

Grand Theft Auto V may be the US's best-selling game of all time, but I wouldn't be surprised if that title is eventually handed off to Red Dead Redemption 2 or the next entry in the GTA series. Especially if Take-Two keeps re-releasing its titles as much as it did for Grand Theft Auto V.

News:: Warner Bros. starts a new label that's dedicated entirely to Harry Potter games

Warner Bros. just cast game-ia labelus appearato. This is the most I've ever hated myself because of a lede.

Portkey is the new Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment label that's dedicated to creating Harry Potter video games. It's said that the games will be developed for both mobile and console. It also seems as though a focus for this initiative will be to tell stories that are tangential and supplemental to the going-ons in the books. Portkey says the games will feature "familiar characters at different points in their lives."

It's important to note that this isn't a studio from WBIE. Instead, it's a label that will seemingly fund Harry Potter games from already-established developers. The first title is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite which is an augmented reality game from Pokemon Go creator Niantic. Portkey promises more reveals are coming soon.

News:: PSVR's latest demo disc is a free download on the PlayStation Store

If your PlayStation VR has been collecting dust for awhile, Sony might have a few reasons for you to jack back in. Starting today, the contents of the demo disc that comes with new PSVR bundles are up for grabs on the PlayStation Store for free. Headlining the offerings are samples of the mousey Zelda-esque adventure Moss, horror offering The Persistence and Star Child, the 2.5D side-scroller from Playful. None of those are out until next year, so if you want to try something brand new, those are good places to start.

News:: Dragon Ball FighterZ gets Hori

If you're in the market for a new joystick after the death of MadCatz earlier this year, then Hori has got you covered for the upcoming Dragon Ball FighterZ...as long as you're a PlayStation or PC gamer and live in Japan.

Featuring artwork of Goku in his super saiyan god form, this new joystick, which will retail for 20498¥ (or roughly $180), looks to replicate the old MadCatz layout and has toggle switches for things like turbo button support. There is an anti-slip mat undercoating and a cover for the top buttons to avoid rage quitting. It will also natively work with the PlayStation 3, should you wish to go back to some older fighting games with a new peripheral.

The joystick will be releasing in Japan on February 1, 2018, which is the release date over seas. US gamers will be able to knock knuckles earlier on January 26, though obviously without a stylish new arcade stick.

News:: Niantic is looking to Harry Potter for its next game

The success of Pokemon Go basically means developer Niantic can tackle whatever IP they want. Since they have seemingly perfected the genre of capturing creatures, why not adapt Harry Potter into a similar experience next? Putting aside that most people don't associate Potter with monster catching, tackling another incredibly popular series is sure to make for a massive hit.

Called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the app will be a similar AR experience to Pokemon Go that will be launching sometime next year. The official description from Niantic reads, "the game will use state-of-the-art AR mobile technology and allow players to go on adventures, learn and cast spells, discover mysterious artifacts, and encounter legendary beasts and iconic characters." It will utilize technology from Ingress, another Niantic app that had people walking around and checking into various real world locations, and be published under Warner Bros. Interactive's new Portkey Studio label (which is dedicated to creating games based on Harry Potter).

You can sign up for more information as it becomes available by heading over to the newly launched website. You can also stare at the logo for the game, because there isn't much else to go on. Niantic is promising more information in 2018, so it will still be a few months before we learn the full details. That should give you enough time to prepare for the inevitable congregation of people shouting spell names in public.

News:: Destiny 2 and its terrible horrible no good very bad ban policy

It's been a while since Bungie has released a game on PC, 10 years to be precise. A lot has changed since Halo 2 came out and by the looks of their current ban policy on Destiny 2, it seems like Bungie is having trouble finding their footing in the modern PC gaming world.

Last Friday, one of our community bloggers Blanchimont posted a message saying that they were banned from Destiny 2 on PC without any warning or obvious cause. They were given no reasoning when the ban was handed down and no chance to appeal said ban. Just bam, out 60 dollars.

News:: Review in Progress: Need for Speed Payback

Growing up, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and Need for Speed: Underground 2 were easily some of my favorite arcade racing games, and Underground 2 specifically has become a fan favorite of the series for many. Since then, I've gone back to revist these games with each new entry in the series, as sadly, the seventh generation of hardware wasn't very noteworthy for the franchise.

But in 2015, we would witness the reboot of the series simply named Need for Speed -- from developer Ghost Games. With a welcomed return to focus on tuning cars, street racing, a large urban open world, and all the while looking gorgeous to boot (despite the weird, boring live-action cutscenes and other notable issues), Need for Speed showed some promise. It could still easily have been expanded upon.

However, Need for Speed Payback comes off feeling like one step ahead and half a dozen steps back, followed up with tumbling down a flight of stairs.

News:: Take-Two is pushing for 'recurrent consumer spending' in all of its games

Games like Grand Theft Auto V and companies like Take-Two have been making bank by giving players the opportunity to continue spending money beyond their initial one-time purchase. That kind of games-as-a-service approach isn't going away in the triple-A space anytime soon; quite the opposite.

Speaking to investors, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that we can expect more of this monetization strategy not just in Grand Theft Auto Online or NBA2K, but, well, everywhere. "There's a lot of room for growth," he said, as reported by Gamasutra. "This is just the beginning."

More to the point: "We've said that we aim to have recurrent consumer spending opportunities for every title that we put out at this company. It may not always be an online model, it probably won't always be a virtual currency model, but there will be some ability to engage in an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board."

This continued push makes sense for publishers with large, active audiences. As part of Take-Two's fiscal second quarter 2018 results, the company noted that "Recurrent consumer spending (virtual currency, add-on content and microtransactions) grew 66% year-over-year and accounted for 48% of total net revenue. The largest contributors to net revenue in fiscal second quarter 2018 were NBA 2K17, Grand Theft Auto Online and Grand Theft Auto V, WWE SuperCard and WWE 2K17, and XCOM 2."

Looking ahead, Take-Two will have Red Dead Redemption and Borderlands 3, two games that require little if any imagination to envision how "recurrent consumer spending" could fit into the picture.

News:: Balance tweaks and Xbox One X support in Injustice 2's new update

The patch notes have been released for the November update for DC Comic's fighting game, Injustice 2. Not only have multiple changes been made to many roster members, but the game's stages have also seen their own balance tweaks.

The patch, which is live on Xbox One now and coming to PS4 next week, also contains support for the recently released Xbox One X console, resulting in higher resolution, better depth of field, and a generally improved visual appearance overall.

Injustice 2
is currently undergoing its PC beta, which ends on Friday. On the same day, NetherRealm Studios will reveal the remaining characters coming to their upcoming Fighter Pack #3 DLC release.

News:: Universal's Dark Universe has been mummified

Universal's Monster Universe, not-so-lovingly called the Dark Universe, has lost its captains and is on hold.

They had a plan. They really did. Universal didn't have any comic book properties, and they didn't want to risk spending a lot of money on adapting a risky book property or something, but they did want a cinematic universe. They saw the success of Marvel and DC (kind of) and they wanted some of that so they looked around their old franchises and decided that they'd take their classic monster movies and turn them into their own comic book universe.

It was... uninspired. Almost no one was excited for it despite a host of massive actors coming on board, a massive advertising campaign that no one paid attention to, and a plethora of desperation. Instead the series sputtered into life with a tacked on ending to Dracula Untold, which was eventually wiped from continuity (even though it was the only continuity at the time) in favor of kicking everything off with Tom Cruise's The Mummy

We all know how that went domestically, and while it pulled big numbers in overseas that can be more attributed to Cruise still being able to do that outside of the US than excitement for the film itself. The truth is The Mummy didn't generate any love for the Monster Universe itself. In fact it probably turned more people against it considering how shoddily put together it all was, and how unappealing the very idea seemed.

All this led to a recent report from THR that Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, the guys captaining the ship over there, have left the project to work on other things that don't involve them being embarrassed. With that the Dark Universe is basically rudderless, and has little direction with no plan other than to lick their wounds and try to figure out a way forward.

"We've learned many lessons throughout the creative process on Dark Universe so far, and we are viewing these titles as filmmaker-driven vehicles, each with their own distinct vision," Universal president of production Peter Cramer told THR. "We are not rushing to meet a release date and will move forward with these films when we feel they are the best versions of themselves."

What's that mean? One option is to head forward by giving the monsters to high profile directors who will do one-off films that don't connect. Basically scrubbing any idea of a shared universe and instead making movies that actually stand on the merits of the character, not the actors attached. I vote this way, as turning these monsters into action stars was never very appealing in the first place. Maybe get a competent director and put together an actually scary Mummy movie. Another option is to reboot yet again (barf).

A third option is to hire Brendan Frasier to come in and save this thing. You all know you want it.

News:: Square Enix want to work 'aggressively' on Switch titles

Square Enix have become the latest third-party studio to declare their intent to push more titles to the Nintendo Switch in 2018. The Japanese developer made the statement during their annual fiscal report.

The studio said that the Nintendo console had a unique positioning against both the PS4 and Xbox One, and is ideal for putting out mid-range titles, which Square Enix wishes to work on aggressively. They also added that multi-platform releases were possible, and the company wouldn't rule out any of its IPs for the platform, including "new ones, currently active ones, currently not-active ones."

It certainly seems that studios are finding it very fashionable to state an intent to work on providing quality Switch games next year. Here's hoping that they all back up their starry-eyed statements.

News:: PlayStation's redesigned phone app focuses on socializing

If you've ever used the PlayStation App on your phone, you know how dodgy it has been since launch. Never mind the dated looks -- its interface was a hodgepodge that was never particularly helpful in any one area. At last, though, it's getting a makeover. Sony has released an overhauled PlayStation App for Android and iOS that not only drags the look into the modern era, but borrows more than a few cues from social networking apps. It's dominated by a Facebook-style "what's new" feed that puts your friends' PS4 activity front and center, and clearly does much more to encourage comments and sharing. Even profiles have a more social look, and you get quicker access to your friends list and notifications.

News:: Judge awards custody of Sonic the Hedgehog to Christian Whitehead (Fauxclusive)

Calling it the easiest ruling he has made in his 37 years on the bench, the Honorable William T. Hershel of San Francisco announced today he is granting full custody of Sonic the Hedgehog to Christian Whitehead.

Whitehead, developer behind the successful and beloved Sonic Mania, was deemed the only parent capable to raise Sonic after the judge played about four levels of Sonic Forces. In his ruling, the judge slammed the gaming community at large for allowing this to go on for so long.

“This is clearly a case of a community recognizing the signs of abuse and doing nothing to stop it,” Judge Hershel’s ruling stated. “Sonic: Lost World. Sonic Boom. Sonic Runners. It couldn’t have been more obvious this was an unfit home for the mascot. It’s as if Sega was begging to have its parental rights stripped.”

Holding back the tears, Sega begged and pleaded not to have its baby taken away, promising to clean up its act and also do something about that fanbase of his. But it wasn't enough for the judge, who ordered the bailiff to immediately remove Sonic from Sega and hand him over to Whitehead.

“The court is only doing what is in the best interest of the character,” the judge explained. “Even though Sega is the biological parent, it’s clear it is unable and frankly unwilling to provide a good home for Sonic where he can grow and thrive. I mean, have you people played Sonic and the Black Knight? If that isn’t a sure sign of an unfit parent I don’t know what is.”

As for Knuckles and Tails, Sega and Whitehead will have joint custody of the pair while the judge ordered Big the Cat be put down.

News:: Destiny 2's raid challenges continue with the Gauntlet

Right now, the main things to do in Destiny 2's PVE endgame are to get level 305, complete the hard mode (Prestige) Leviathan raid, and finish all four of its challenges. So far two challenges have debuted -- the Royal Pools (where you have to have to have one person stay in the middle pool/water area the entire time, giving you one less plate swapper) and the Gauntlet, which debuts this week.

For the Gauntlet, you'll now need to shuffle around more when you stand on a plate to open up the outside ring. In other words, standing on the same plate will fail the challenge, so you need several people to rotate around. With communication it's not that bad, even on Prestige mode.

Next up are the challenges for Pleasure Gardens and Calus, and then the next expansion on December 5. Right now Bungie is being very coy by saying it will include a "raid activity," and not outright confirming a new raid. Anything less would be a disappointment, but given that they used that phrase, I think that's what we're going to feel come December.

News:: Import Review: Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session!

The Taiko no Tatsujin ("Taiko Drum Master") rhythm game series has been around for a while. Since its first entry on PS2, there have been over a dozen of these things on a variety of systems, on top of successful arcade machines. And yet, for most people, there haven't been a lot of opportunities to play this series.

Indeed, this is the second game available in English release since the start of the series, the last one being on PS2. It's not surprising, then, that I never got the chance to try these games before. Having to import a copy be damned, I couldn't ignore such a historical event!

Let's see if the latest entry in this elusive series can keep up the pace.

News:: Two weeks later, top groups are starting to clear Final Fantasy XIV's 'Ultimate' raid tier

In mid October, Final Fantasy XIV's new "Ultimate" raid, The Unending Coil of Bahamut, dropped. Meant for the top of the top (read: you have to beat a raid tier only 1-10% of any given server has cleared to even enter), this challenge is an experiment of sorts to see if Square Enix can keep people interested during "catchup" patches, when a new raid tier is in limbo.

For nearly two weeks, Ultimate went uncleared, but now people are starting to finish it. The below unnamed group cleared it first, but the Free Company (guild) Angered has since cleared, as well as Elysium, Gabagool, and Stardom. As a reminder, this is sort of an all-stars fight with several big bosses from the very first Bahamut-themed raid that debuted in the 2.0 edition of the game several years back. It's a roughly 20 minute battle without checkpoints, and if you mess up, you'll start the boss rush all over again from the very beginning.

Now that clear videos and guides are starting to roll out we'll probably see a few more completions, but the barrier of entry is so high that they're not going to be widespread. Honestly, I love that idea. The journey that the community has taken these past few weeks to collectively clear it for the common good has been amazing -- and I like the idea that players are still going to be theorycrafting it for weeks to come.

News:: SAG-AFTRA approves new deal with video game producers

Actors union body SAG-AFTRA have announced that their members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new deal with video game companies, bringing the year-long strike to its conclusion.

The crux of SAG-AFTRA member's demands pertained to bonuses, with the actor's guild requesting bonuses for games that performed particularly well. This was deemed controversial by the studios who felt that performers would receive further payment after a game's release, whereas programmers, artists and other developing staff would not, causing morale issues and accusations of preferential treatment.

The union also requested more transparency in game context, allowing actors to better prepare for their upcoming roles, particularly where distressing themes are concerned. Other requests include a restriction of time spent performing vocally-stressful roles in a single session, and for better stunt coordination, to prevent the likelihood of injury during motion-capture filming.

SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris issued the following statement: "This agreement is the first step towards streamlining the work our members do in the video game industry. The deal includes significant improvements in the area of transparency and the payment structure ensures that our members are compensated fairly for their work. I am excited for what this means for our members moving forward."

Ten percent of some 7000+ affected union members voted, with 90% in favour of the new proposal, which replaces the former Interactive Media Video Game Agreement. The terms of the new deal go into effect immediately and are valid until November 7, 2020.

News:: Do you think we'll get a Mario Odyssey 2 on Switch?

The dust has settled, and people still like Mario Odyssey 2. It's one of the best-reviewed games of all time, and pretty much every anecdotal tale I've heard has been positive. Also, it's the fastest-selling Mario to date -- yeah, there's probably going to be another Mario sooner than later.

Which kind of Mario will that be though? You have the weird, experimental type of stuff like Paper Mario (which could easily work on Switch, and will probably come in two to three years), the traditional 2D kind of stuff, and the 3D adventures. While nothing is certain (will they keep the New subseries going?), I do think we're going to get a Mario Odyssey 2 in the same vein as Galaxy 2 on the Wii U. This worked out brilliantly for Nintendo sales-wise, and Galaxy 2 specifically is my favorite Mario to date.

The first and the second Galaxy were nearly three years apart, so I'd put money on Odyssey 2 appearing at an E3 in a few years. One thing is for sure though even if Nintendo somehow sits on Mario on the Switch for a while -- it's an exciting time for the console, with developers scrambling to make games for it after realizing it's a hit. Future E3s have the potential to be pretty great.

News:: Android 16 lights 'em up in his Dragon Ball FighterZ trailer

Another all-too-brief trailer has dropped for Arc System Works' upcoming Dragon Ball FighterZ. This time featuring recently announced character Android 16 laying wasted to all and sundry.

As is always the case with this particular series of "character trailers", things are over all too quickly. But we do get to see him dominate the opposition with some wall-bounce grabs and fist-assisted projectiles, before calling it a day with his devastating Hell's Flash super. Clearly Mr.16 is a force to be reckoned with.

The trailer also features the kind of music I expect they play at those clubs in hot countries that obnoxious, sunburned Brits like to populate en masse.

The special Direct presentation for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was quick, but it had a few key details like an overview of several mechanics and the confirmation of a season pass. Oh, and the announcement of a Zelda: Breath of the Wild crossover quest, which will be a free bit of DLC.

Starting this week, players can boot up Breath of the Wild to engage in a new sidequest that will be introduced in a free update. The point of said quest is to "familiarize" players with Rex, the new hero. After finishing it you'll gain access to the Rex costume.

The promotion will work on both the Wii U and Switch, and will kick off on November 9.
