News:: Tekken 7 adds the vampire Eliza as pre-order DLC

Every bit of Tekken 7 footage has looked better than the last, but Namco Bandai always seems a bit icky with how much DLC seems to be planned with each of their fighting games. Nevertheless, if the eventual DLC additions look as good as Eliza, I'm game.

If you pre-order Tekken 7 (maybe nab the dope looking collector's edition?), you'll get Eliza -- who first appeared in Tekken Revolution -- the gothic vampire who takes a lot of naps. Her reveal trailer shows off slick dive kicks, and ground projectiles with, if I'm not mistaken, two different distances that don't look easy to deal with.

Tekken 7 releases for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC June 2nd. Just in time for EVO.

News:: EVO 2017 Championship lineup revealed

The EVO Championship is always the hypest weekend for fighting games and this year's iteration of the tournament is going to be no different. Announced on a live stream, this year's lineup has some pretty cool inclusions. Along with the eight announced titles, there will be a ninth game up for a player vote. For two weeks, donations can be made to Generosity for charity and the game with the most money will not only be played on the final day of the tournament, but will include a $10,000 cash prize for the winner.

What's up for a vote? Arms, Windjammers, Nidhogg, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Killer Instinct, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Pokken Tournament, Skullgirls, or Mortal Kombat X. So if you're not pleased with the announced line-up, maybe your favorite game will make it in? I'm personally vying for Arms or Windjammers myself just to get something totally off the wall. As for the rest of the tourney, I'm sure BlazBlue and Injustice 2 are going to be hype.

Here's the full EVO 2017 line-up with the five titles ending on Sunday labeled below:

  • Street Fighter V (Sunday Finals)
  • Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
  • Super Smash Bros. Wii U (Sunday Finals)
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Injustice 2
  • BlazBlue: Central Fiction (Sunday Finals)
  • Tekken 7 (Sunday Finals)
  • King of Fighters XIV
  • Fan Voted Game  (Sunday Finals)

Evolution 2017 Championship runs from July 14-16, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV! You can register here or donate to vote here

News:: Capcom's wasting no time getting to Resident Evil 7's DLC

Resident Evil 7 just released today, and it's getting quite the positive reception. Capcom's not content to rest on its laurels, though. It's rapid-firing the expansions before people have a chance to forget about the game.

Today, Capcom outlined its initial DLC plans for Resident Evil 7. Here are the unminced descriptions of both Banned Footage Vol. 1 and Vol. 2:

News:: Nintendo Switch will also have World of Goo, Little Inferno, and Human Resource Machine at launch

World of Goo was an early highlight on WiiWare, and now, all these years and a far different indie scene later, it's looping back for a launch-day release on Nintendo Switch. Consider me pleasantly surprised.

New Switch owners will also be able to download Tomorrow Corporation's Little Inferno and Human Resource Machine on that same day, March 3. All three games are going to include their original soundtracks by Kyle Gabler in a separate mode "available only on Nintendo Switch."

News:: Godzilla is keeping people from preordering the Switch in Japan

The Nintendo Switch has become a hot commodity here in the United States, and it's no less so in its home country. Japanese fans who've been trying to order the hybrid console through Nintendo's online store have been seeing an error message for the last couple of days, accompanied by a simple drawing of a large lizard attacking Kyoto tower.

The creature bears some resemblance to Toho's movie monster Godzilla, though it doesn't have his dorsal fins. That hasn't stopped fans from calling the creature "Nin Godzilla," a play on the most recent movie, Shin Godzilla. The creature has become quite popular, inspiring fan art, needlepoint samplers, and even an endless runner game where you have to dodge towers and shoot error messages at buildings.

The last Godzilla game on an Nintendo platform was the four player fighting game Godzilla Unleashed in 2007, a Wii followup to the GameCube's Destroy all Monsters Melee. It's unlikely that this sighting will lead to anything more, but it's kind of cool to see how fans' imaginations have been captured by a simple line drawing.

News:: 'Superhot VR' is about to get much more challenging

Superhot VR is an immersive, intense take on an already fun game, but there's no question that it's short when you can run out of things to do in just a few hours. Never fear, though: the creators are preparing the Forever update, which promises a number of good reasons to keep coming back to the Oculus Touch shooter. You can try to beat your best scores in both the usual bullet time mode as well as real time, and face opponents with quicker reflexes. You'll also find a few challenges that ramp up the difficulty if the very act of dodging bullets isn't enough for you.

News:: Here's how your Gen 1 Pokemon will transfer to Sun and Moon

One of the most interesting features promised for the most recent Pokémon titles, Sun and Moon, was the ability to transfer in creatures captured in the eShop versions of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow. Although the Pokémon Bank still hasn't been updated to allow transfers to Sun and Moon just yet, we're finding out a little more about how the transfers will work once it is.

Nintendo of Hong Kong released some details about the forthcoming update, though we still don't know when Sun and Moon will be made compatible. One of the big questions has been how transfered Pokémon would be updated to fit in with more modern creatures, since monsters caught in the first generation didn't have natures, abilities, or separate stats for Special Attack and Defense. According to Serebii.net, Pokémon transferred from Red, Blue or Yellow will have at least three maxed out Individual Values, or IVs. They'll also have a randomized nature and ability, meaning there's a chance transferred Pokémon may have their hidden ability when they enter the Bank. Pokémon that you transfer in this way will be easy to spot, since they'll have a special GameBoy mark that goes in the same place you'd see a shiny star or Pokérus indicator.

In addition to the information about transfers, Serebii reports that the National Pokédex in each of your games will sync up with the Pokémon Bank, listing the creatures that you've seen and caught in each game and merging them with your Pokédex in every game you access the Bank with. This should make it much, much easier to complete a National Pokédex since you won't necessarily have to have all 802 creatures in one place. Of course, that won't stop crazy people like myself from trying to build a "Living Pokédex."

Finally, there were some details provided about how you'll be able to cross-reference information between your various game cartridges. It seems that Battle Points will be able to be stored in the Bank, which will make it easier to save up for rare items. The Bank will also keep track of a multitude of stats including Pokémon captured and eggs hatched across all the games it's compatible with.

It sounds like there are several quality of life improvements on the way, and I'll be happy to finally have a full Pokédex again when this update drops. As mentioned, we still don't have a date other than "late January," but that means the new features should be available any day now. Using the Pokémon Bank isn't especially complicated, but you may want to brush up on how it works using our guide before the patch goes live.

News:: Deus Ex's Breach mode has been released as a free standalone product

While the main attraction in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was Adam Jensen's fight against the Illuminati for the rights of augmented people (or something like that), it's not the only part of the game. There's also a sideshow called "Breach" that adds an arcade twist. Now, you won't need the full Mankind Divided experience to play Breach.

Today, Square Enix broke Breach mode off into its own thing, listing it on Steam as a free and standalone product. It has all the same content as the version in Mankind Divided has; there's nothing held back to appeal to free-to-play sensibilities. It's even getting an update next month to add some new maps.

There are a couple explanations as to why Square Enix did this. First and most obvious, Breach mode already had an egregious wealth of microtransactions. In a way, they kind of overshadowed the rest of Breach. It probably makes more financial sense to get those in front of an audience of non-paying customers in hopes that they'll make small investments. Second, it serves as a trial of sorts for those who want to know how Mankind Divided plays.

This is a fitting move and one that probably should've been made from the get-go. Breach always felt a bit tacked-on to the larger Mankind Divided product. Now it doesn't have to contend with Adam Jensen's travels for attention, a battle it was never going to win.

News:: Injustice 2 beta invites going out

Remember last week when NetherRealm started taking registrations for an Injustice 2 beta? Well, you might want to check your inbox if you signed up, because the first wave of beta invites have just been released.

On a live stream earlier today, NetherRealm confirmed that the beta for Injustice 2 will begin immediately, feature 4 characters, and last a solid month. Not a bad way to get a feel for the game. If you're worried that you haven't received a code yet, don't panic, NetherRealm says it will be sending out more in the near future.

News:: The Banner Saga 3 concludes Stoic's Viking trilogy

Two down, one to go. Stoic has returned to Kickstarter for The Banner Saga 3, the final title in its turn-based strategy Viking series. This $200,000 crowdfunding campaign is meant to give the team "a little more breathing room for development to ensure the game is fully baked before launching it."

"We're still solidly indie, not accepting any investor funding so Kickstarter is still a great way to rally the community to show support for the game, while letting us call the shots on the games we make," wrote the developers. "We're paying for most of the game ourselves, but the funds we're asking for will enable us to take the time we need and bring the band back together one more time!"

News:: New Call of Duty Zombies DLC has Kevin Smith for some reason

I may not be a fan of his films as his nepotism resulted in Yoga Hosers, hands down the worst film of 2016, but I have always appreciated how big of a nerd Kevin Smith is. Along with fighting to direct episodes of shows he loves like The Flash and Supergirl, he also cameos in the dumbest things. Case in point, the new Sabotage DLC map pack for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Along with four new maps -- Noir, Neon, Renaissance, and Dominion, which is a remake of Modern Warfare 2's Afghan map -- Sabotage includes a new expansion to the zombie co-op mode, Rave in the Redwoods.

Set in the 90s and dripping in neon coolness, the new map includes the previously mentioned Smith cameo, the returning stars of Zombies in Spaceland (voiced by Seth Green, Sasheer Zamata, Jay Pharoah and Ike Barinholtz), and a new enemy named The Slasher. It's looking pretty damn neat.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's Sabotage DLC will release for Playstation 4 on January 31st, with an Xbox One and PC release to follow at a later date. It's included in the $50 USD season pass, but can also be purchased on its own for $15 USD.

News:: Come party with Gacucon in Miami at GameWorks Dolphin Mall

Update: GaCuCon kicks off tomorrow night at GameWorks Dolphin Mall in Miami! Here's the info

There's a gaming cruise? Of course there is, don't you think there should be? After all, there's EDM cruises, clothing-optional cruises, psychic cruises, disturbing Cruises, and finally now there's a proper gaming cruise. Essentially, it's a floating convention that sails from Miami with stops at Key West and island of Cozumel. Rarely have I found this type of double-dipping: a tropical vacation and a gaming vacation in one. On the wacky premise alone I've already committed to attending.

News:: 'Overwatch' rings in the Lunar New Year with capture the flag

Shortly after the hit hero shooter Overwatch launched last May, fans were treated to a slew of new character models themed for the upcoming 2016 Brazil Summer Olympics. That was just the beginning of Blizzard's extra content train, as they released more for Halloween and Christmas. Last week, they teased new stuff to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, which all goes live today. Players will be excited for the new skins, but the real win is the addition of a long-awaited capture the flag mode to the game.

News:: Feel the power of love in February's Xbox Games with Gold

February is a month most closely associated with love. Xbox tries to play off this for its next set of free Games with Gold. It succeeds to some degree, but a more easily-identifiable theme might be power. Huey Lewis and the News would be proud of that combination.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is Xbox's token nod at February. It's a cooperative shooter, and the "lovers" in the title satisfies the Valentine's Day condition. But, it's also a game where you obliterate everything and that maybe more squarely makes it about power.

The other three titles are even more power-related. They are Project CARS (horsepower), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Jedi powers), and Monkey Island 2: Special Edition (Voodoo powers). The February tropes fall apart once you consider the other 75 percent of the list.

Here's the schedule breakdown for February's Games with Gold: Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is available for the entire month. Project CARS slides into that mid-month spot and is free from February 16 through March 15. On the Xbox 360 side, Monkey Island 2 is free from February 1 through February 15; The Force Awakens then takes over from February 16 through February 28. As a reminder, all Games with Gold Xbox 360 titles are playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility.

News:: 'Pokémon Duel' brings Pikachu and friends to iOS, Android today

Pokémon Go has a new friend on mobile today: Pokémon Duel is available now, for free, on Android and iOS devices, courtesy of The Pokémon Company International.

Pokémon Duel is a strategy title that plays more like a board game than a traditional Pokémon experience. Players build a party of six Pokémon and move them across a playing field dotted with spaces where the creatures can attack, flank or block their opponents' adorable armies. The first player to reach the enemy's goal wins.

News:: Fan-favorite tactical shooter SWAT 4 comes to GOG

The folks at GOG.com have once again worked their magic to make a classic PC game more easily accessible. As of today, Irrational Games' tactical squad shooter SWAT 4 is now available from the digital distributor for $10, and it even comes with the Stetchkov Syndicate expansion packed in.

For the die-hard fan who's already seen it all and gone back for more, GOG.com held a Q&A with developers Paul Hellquist and Bill Gardner. Asked about the game's sustained appeal more than a decade after release, Hellquist attributed it to the fact you play as a "civilian police officer protecting your city, not a soldier overseas or killing everything that moves," and the environmental storytelling, which left "lasting impressions with fans, like the cultist compound with graves in the basement, or the split-level ranch with the old lady whose son is a serial killer keeping women in the septic tank."

I hope Rainbow Six Siege players give SWAT 4 a real chance.

News:: Here's Resident Evil 7's launch trailer, don't watch it

Right here, embedded directly above this sentence, is Resident Evil 7's launch trailer. There's a little triangle button in the video player that you could click to watch it. I'm going to posit (pause it) another suggestion: Don't watch it.

Resident Evil 7 is very good. It's full of small moments that are each wonderful, and it all adds up to an entire game that is wonderful. Many of those moments are partially shown in this trailer, just two second spurts of fantastic and terrifying things happening. This likely won't ruin the experience for anyone, but it'd be best to not think "Oh, just like in the trailer!" when it happens in the game.

Instead, save this video as a postmortem of sorts, a fitting sendoff for a game where so many creatures are post-mortem. Watch it after you finish as something of an incomplete highlight reel. Think "Oh shit, yeah! That part was really cool!" over and over again until you're tempted to start a playthrough on Madhouse difficulty.

As for us, we've done our own postmortem. Steven, Zack, and I recorded an episode of Podtoid with Resident Evil 7 brand manager Tim Turi where we go in-depth talking and spoiling everything about the game. Be on the lookout for that either this week or early next week. But, like this trailer, it's probably best saved for once you actually finish Resident Evil 7.

News:: The first Battlefield 1 expansion has a new mode, maps, and the French army

We're more than a month out from the first Battlefield 1 expansion, but DICE has begun showing the new maps, mode, and weaponry of They Shall Not Pass. As I said the last time I touched on this stuff, by the time the pack is out in March, I'm liable to cave and get the whole season pass. I can't be helped.

First off, They Shall Not Pass is adding the French army, which, yeah, that's only now happening post-release. There are four maps -- Verdun Heights, Fort Vaux, Soissons, and Rupture -- and another Elite Class, the club-swinging, grenade-tossing Trench Raider. The new mode, Frontlines, sounds particularly appealing. It's a tug-of-war battle over control points that ends in a Rush-style battle.

News:: The developers of 'Alto's Adventure' are building a skateboarding game

Snowman, the creator of ultra-chill snowboarding game Alto's Adventure, is keeping busy lately. In addition to the sequel Alto's Odyssey, it is also working with studio The Game Band for Where Cards Fall and partnering with Australian studio Slingshot and Satchel to build Distant. That's an ambitious workload for a small studio, but that isn't stopping Snowman from announcing yet another new title in development: Skate City. News:: Overwatch's Lunar New Year event is now live

As promised, the new content in Overwatch celebrating Lunar New Year is now playable on all platforms, and you'll be able to earn cosmetic items that fit the theme for the next three weeks. Over 100 new sprays, emotes, skins, and highlight intros are available, including several legendary skins based on the characters in Journey to the West.

The event includes a new game type called "Capture the Rooster," a variant of capture the flag modes found in other first-person shooters. I'd expect seeing these items to be a little more uncommon; I know that I spent all my in-game currency during the Winter event and haven't had much of a chance to build up reserves again. You'll be able to play this mode and earn Chinese  New Year themed aesthetic items until February 13.

News:: Ultra Street Fighter II on Switch will have an arcade standby feature, online ranked play

When an online-enabled game hits a Nintendo console it has the potential to feel like a barebones effort, but Capcom seems to be pulling out the stops for Ultra Street Fighter II on the Switch based on some new information.

First off, it'll have an "arcade standby" mode, which replicates the concept of playing against the CPU and randomly getting challenged by strangers online. It's an optional setting that's been done before, but it's appreciated regardless.

In terms of online play, Ultra will also have multiple opportunities for competitive players. You have PP and BP (Player Points and Battle Points respectively) to govern, as well as wireless local play, and casual/ranked matches. The latter will be broken down further into quick, custom, friend, and lobby matches.

It seems pretty robust! I just hope it sells and those of you who aren't able to buy a Switch can try it out. If it's any good, of course. Rumors point to a near-retail price of around $40, and Capcom is entirely capable of phoning it in.

News:: Yakuza 0 will be getting some free DLC next month

Yakuza 0 is really great. It may possibly be the best Yakuza game released in the West thus far, but there was one strange omission: unlockable costumes. In some of the previous Yakuza titles, beating the game allowed you to select costumes for Premium Adventure Mode and change the look of Kiryu and his pals. Yakuza 5 actually broke that trend, opting to have the costumes relegated to DLC, but Sega wisely bundled them with the Western release in 2015.

For some reason, Yakuza 0 didn't launch with those added costumes. I suppose it isn't the biggest deal as all of these extra bits are being released for free, but it is still strange. Either way, starting today and going until February 14, there will be a new DLC pack released each week with extra goodies for players to grab. This should make my third playthrough a little easier (and probably would have helped with my LEGEND mode run).

Once downloaded, you need to talk to Bob Utsunomiya (the clown) near the CP Shrine in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori. From there, he'll gift you the items and you'll be free to use them. For costumes, you'll have to go to Kiryu's real-estate office and Majima's cabaret club office and change into them. Those may be locked until you beat the game (like they were in 5), but I'll have to check to make sure.

Also, have a look at the launch trailer. It should get you suitably amped up for the game.

News:: Final Fantasy XV will get a free monster encyclopedia update at some point

I'm impressed with just how much there is to do in Final Fantasy XV, even without buying any of the DLC or partaking in the Season Pass.

There's going to be a whole lot more too in the form of free updates, including a monster encyclopedia, according to director Hajine Tabata. When asked by outlet Entertainment Station, if some sort of bestiary was in the cards, he responded, "there are plans. As for when, please look forward to further information."

Well, there you have it! That was simple enough. This is in addition to the alteration of Chapter 13, more playable characters, an avatar system, and extra New Game+ options. It's crazy to think how complete a "Game of the Year Edition" on PC might be years down the line. I know people are up in arms about DLC, and they definitely have a right to be given Square Enix's past (cough, XIII-2), but they've done a stellar job with XV so far.

News:: Don't forget about Mario Sports Superstars! It's coming March 24 with amiibo cards

Sports are cool. Mario is cool. Mario sports games are cool too. The latest entry of the Mario Sports series, Mario Sports Superstars will be releasing on March 24, 2017 in America. It'll release in Europe...eventually in the spring.

For a limited time, you can get a free amiibo card with the game, which when scanned allow you to get "a variety of fun bonuses." Fun, but not so detailed quite yet apparently. To get more you'll have to cough up $4.99 for a pack of five cards. Like Pokémon cards (which is still a thing), you won't know what cards are inside.

News:: After two failures, the third Pokemon Sun and Moon global challenge is on the way

So uh, about those Pokemon Sun and Moon global challenges? We failed both of them.

A number of things could have contributed to this, in spite of the game's monumental record-setting sales. Recently, I mused that a lot of people didn't even know how to access the challenges, as they're buried within menus of menus inside of room inside of a virtual space in the game. There's also the very realistic scenario that a lot of folks picked up the game due to hype, and have no interest in "catching them all" or even beating the story, much less completing esoteric challenges.

So we're left with two failures(catching 100 million 'mons and scanning one million), and a third is on the way. This time we're tasked with simply trading Pokemon through the GTS, though the actual numbered goal has not been shared. It'll run from January 31 until February 14, so we'll get those details soon enough.

I think Game Freak should increase the rewards and make these challenges bi-monthly instead, and you'd probably see a lot of renewed interest. Several people I know only heard of the first two missions near the end of their expiration -- because again, they don't consistently go to the Festival Plaza. Better yet, update the game and have the Pokemon Center announce them and run them through the attendant.

If this one fails, something needs to change.

News:: The Nintendo 3DS is here to stay (for now)

With the Switch fast approaching, you might think Nintendo is ready to give up on the 3DS. Not so. The company has a small, but significant stack of games planned for the handheld in 2017, and it wants you to know about them. In a press release today, the company highlighted Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, which comes out on February 3rd, Mario Sports Superstars -- which now has a release date, March 24th -- and Pikmin, a side-scroller spin-off featuring Captain Olimar and his color-coded friends. A (rather fantastic) Pikachu-themed new 3DS XL is also coming to America for $199.99 on February 24th, following its release in Japan late last year.
