News:: The Game Awards will stream live on December 7th

The Game Awards, created in 2014 and produced by Geoff Keighley, is like the gaming equivalent of the Emmys or Oscars. The show airs live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 7th, and you can stream it on more than 16 different gaming and digital platforms. Better yet, you'll be able to vote for your favorite games in "select categories" using Facebook Messenger, Google Search and Twitter DM starting November 14th. Engadget is one of the voting publications this year, and we'll have the livestream posted for you, too.

News:: A Zeonic Front mobile suit and three others are coming to Gundam Versus

Bandai Namco Japan has announced that four more mobile suits will be coming to Gundam Versus as DLC during the month of November for Japan. They will be releasing two at a time in late November, and at the standard price of 602 Yen, or $5 USD when they release elsewhere. As per usual, there is no bundle whatsoever for those that don't want to fork out $20 USD for the entire group.

That being said, the new wave of DLC marks the inclusion of the PS2 game Zeonic Front as part of the roster. Which is a pretty cool surprise addition that few saw coming.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II's first season of free DLC shows promise

I'm anxious to see how Star Wars Battlefront II shakes out. DICE has made some much-needed improvements over the last game but there are plenty of off-putting decisions, too. I like that there's a proper story mode this time, and that the studio is able to cover more of the Star Wars universe. Not having a costly season pass to split up the community is also a step in the right direction.

But then there's the way the game handles player progression. There's the loot boxes. There's all the "recurrent consumer spending" stuff that EA can use to justify giving out post-release content. Earlier today, we got an extensive look at how much Battlefront II's microtransactions will cost. Now, on the brighter and less-headache-inducing side, we're getting a preview of the game's free DLC.

The first content season begins December 5 and will entail not only multiplayer add-ons -- Finn and Phasma, a pair of maps, another vehicle -- but also an extension of the story mode with new chapters.

It all starts with choosing a side. On December 5, you’ll have an opportunity to align with the First Order or choose to fight for the Resistance. Your choice is important, as it will allow you to take part in special challenges that will grant your faction specific rewards.

Things kick into high gear on December 13. Your favorite stormtrooper-turned-hero Finn joins the fight for the Resistance and Captain Phasma steps on to the Battlefront for the First Order. They can be purchased with in-game Credits that week. Whichever faction is victorious in completing the most challenges that week will net a reward as well: a special Crate of high-power upgrades for Finn or Captain Phasma.

New locations and vehicles will also arrive. On December 13, the cinematic content from Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues with a new planetary map: Crait. The Starfighter Assault map of D'Qar will join as well, plus a new hero ship –  Tallie Lintra's RZ-2 A-wing. Poe Dameron’s T-70 X-wing is also upgraded with a new ability inspired by Star Wars: The Last Jedi .

Iden Versio returns. In Star Wars Battlefront II Resurrection, you’ll join Commander Iden Versio during the days of the First Order’s rise to power. These new chapters of Star Wars Battlefront II’s single-player story mode will be available December 13.

Your choice of faction will continue to matter. Throughout December, you'll see your chosen faction's progress reflected in-game, as you fight alongside allies from around the world to swing the tide of battle.

Like I said, I'm anxious. Having all this content for free is great, but not if it comes at the cost of a loot box scheme that sours the multiplayer. It feels like someone made a wish with a monkey's paw.

News:: 'South Park' is ready to do battle on your phone

The Fractured But Whole isn't the only South Park game arriving this fall: Ubisoft and RedLynx have released South Park: Phone Destroyer, the Android and iOS title teased back at E3. Think of it as Hearthstone meets Herbert Garrison: you're duking it out in real-time solo or multiplayer battles using collectible cards that grant special abilities to the show's many, many characters. And it's not just banking on South Park's usual sophomoric humor to reel you in. There's a proper 60-mission single-player story and a rare team dynamic that lets you share cards with friends.

News:: PUBG's desert map is looking better and better

The PUBG team has a new batch of screenshots for the game's upcoming desert map and I'm already brainstorming landing zones and hiding spots. Play enough of a game like this, and you can easily envision how matches might shake out. It's a fun little mental exercise while we wait.

For example, see that fenced-in area in the third image? I'm staying the hell away from there.

I spend a good few hours playing PUBG every week and, to this day, I'm still learning things about the game's one and only map. I can't wait to be totally overwhelmed by this dusty new locale and I shudder to think about how many people are going to stampede onto Steam once the update goes live.

News:: The Zelda Smash amiibo is now a Walmart exclusive, among a few other restocks

Oh you thought amiibo were done? Think again.

Hearkening back to the days of the "Unholy Trinity" of Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit, the Smash Zelda amiibo (who actually launched a month after amiibo debuted in November of 2014), like almost everything else in that early lot, has become a rarity.

But in the past year or so Nintendo has been attempting to restock older figures, peppering in random shipments for scalpers to swoop up for people to grab. The latest one is the aforementioned Smash iteration of Zelda, who is now a Walmart exclusive (and sold out online for the time being).

Other restocks include Smash Link (GameStop), and 8-bit Link (Target). Yep, exclusives are still a thing for amiibo, a whole three years later.

News:: Overwatch's next free weekend includes Moira

Hey, here's another early heads up for you to take in and promptly forget about until our next reminder. Blizzard has scheduled the latest Overwatch free-play event for Friday, November 17 at 11:00am Pacific until Monday, November 20 at 11:59pm Pacific on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

That's all well and good on its own but, notably, this will be a chance to play as the newest support hero, Moira, who debuted last week at BlizzCon and is currently being tested on the PC version's PTR.

The event will consist of "Overwatch's full roster of 26 heroes and 16 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade."

News:: GameStop is running a buy one, get one free Pokemon trading card and collectible sale

GameStop has been running some decent pre-holiday sales events in the past few weeks and one such promotion is a collectible clearance sale where you can "Buy One, Get One Free" on qualifying items. While collectible in itself is a vague word (especially when it comes to GameStop), a quick scan of the eligible items shows trading cards and figurines being the top-selling items.

The top of the list includes various deck sets of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, one of which is a pricey Sun and Moon Elite Trainer Box for $35.97 (so you can essentially get two boxes for this price). You'll also find XY Evolutions, Steam Siege, and Legendary Birds Battle Decks.

In the figure department, The Walking Dead series has eclipsed the Sonic and Link Nendoroid figures. As you browse through the pages you'll invariably see more and more "collectibles" that are probably items you'll find at a suburban garage sale.

Here are some items we think may be worth checking out in this sale:

Trading Card Games

  • Yugioh Movie Gold Boost — $8.97  (list price 39.99)
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game XY Evolutions Deck — $6.97  (list price $12.99)
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game Steam Siege Deck — $6.97  (list price $12.99)
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game Sun & Moon Elite Trainer Box — $35.97  (list price $39.99)

Figures

  • Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Nendoroid Link Figure  — $30.97  (list price $34.99)
  • Sonic The Hedgehog Nendoroid Link Figure  — $30.97  (list price $34.99)
  • Marvel Gallery: Lady Thor 9-inch Figure  — $26.97  (list price $29.99)
  • Marvel Gallery: Lady Deadpool 9-inch Figure — $26.97  (list price $29.99)
  • Marvel Gallery: Spider-Gwen Suit Figure — $35.97  (list price $39.99)
  • Wonder Woman Statue Figure — $35.97  (list price $39.99)
  • Marvel Gallery: Spider-Man Symbiote Suit Figure — $44.97  (list price $49.99)

As with all B1G1 Free offers, the free item is the lower price of the two you're purchasing. The promotion runs through this Sunday, November 12. Discount is automatically applied during checkout, so if you don't see it being applied, the sale has either ended or the particular item you're looking at isn't eligible.

News:: Remembering Dead Space with former Visceral Games members

Gameumentary recently wrapped up shooting one of our upcoming documentaries at Outpost Games in San Francisco, and we've come back with plenty of new stuff to share with you.

A few of the staff at Outpost were key members on the Dead Space franchise, including Wright Bagwell, who was the creative director of Dead Space 2.

We took some time during our visit to speak with former members of the Visceral Games team who worked on Dead Space to reminisce with them about the franchise and the studio itself.

This feature was actually planned before EA decided to shut down the studio on October 17, so we made sure to get their thoughts on the recent closure as well.

The full Outpost Games documentary will be available in early 2018. However, we did come back with more than just footage from Outpost Games. We'll be announcing our last project of the year on Monday which will feature someone rather...famous.

Feel free to follow us on Twitter to stay up to date with what we're doing!

We hope you enjoy the video!

News:: Last season's Rocket League snubs might be this season's favorites

It has been quite the whirlwind year for Rocket League pros Torment, Gimmick, and SquishyMuffinz. It's tempting to call it a Cinderella story, the way they rose to the top of the game in North America. But here's the thing about Cinderella: At midnight, her gown will always turn to rags and her stagecoach will always turn into a pumpkin. This trio has asserted itself as a staple of the Rocket League pro scene for a long time to come.

Heading into the Season 4 RLCS World Championships in Washington DC this weekend, it feels pertinent to detail exactly how the three of them got here. It started with a disappointing flameout in the spring open qualifiers for Season 3. Playing as Iris back then (and as former champion Lachinio starting and Squishy as a sub), they failed to make it past the one-weekend tournament where the eight RLCS teams were determined.

News:: EA acquires ‘Titanfall’ studio Respawn

Despite Respawn continuing to support its fantastic mech shooter Titanfall 2 with new content nearly every month after releasing it a year ago, the game's playerbase has dwindled. In a recent interview, the studio's CEO noted that the game's lower-than-expected sales were due to a holiday release window crowded with huge AAA games like Battlefield 1. He said the game likely wouldn't have any more big content releases coming after August, leaving the future uncertain -- but only for the game. EA, which had published the studio's two previous Titanfall games, just announced that it has acquired Respawn in a deal valued over $400 million.

News:: EA's buying Respawn for upward of $455 million

Vince Zampella and Jason West are back under the banner of a major publisher. The two former Infinity Ward heads were infamously fired and sued by Activision in 2010 before forming Respawn Entertainment. After spending seven years as an independent studio, Respawn's set to be a subsidiary of a major publisher.

As reported by VentureBeat, EA is going to purchase Respawn in a deal that could be worth $455 million. There is $151 million in cash, $164 million in restricted long-term stock grants, and up to $140 million in performance-based incentives. The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Accompanying this news is the revelation that Respawn seems to already be at work on three different projects for EA. The studio is currently developing a third installment in the Titanfall series, some sort of Star Wars game, and an unnamed VR experience. The first two are especially noteworthy. Titanfall 2 was tremendously received last year despite poor sales which are widely pinned on the timing of the launch. And, it seems as if most major EA subsidiaries are going to be responsible for something Star Wars-related.

Zampella has this to say to people who are worried about what toll the acquisition might take on Respawn's games. "My message is we are still Respawn and we are going to make things better. It doesn’t change the future of Titanfall. Only positives come from it, like more resources."

News:: I present to you: The first Destructoid hedgehog

I'm proud to announce we've finally peaked, we've come to the long-awaited destination, we've created a hedgehog. But, not just any hedgehog, the Destructoid hedgehog. Now before anyone decides to leave “name suggestions,” let me be as clear as possible -- he has no name. As the original creator of the Destructoid hedgehog, I can confirm our hedgehog is nameless, as he finds “names” to be pointless.

News:: Here's how much Star Wars Battlefront II's loot boxes and microtransactions cost

Star Wars Battlefront II has a convoluted progression system. There are a ton of different upgrades which are acquired primarily through Star Cards. These are used to modify characters, and even that is multi-tiered and ranges from common to legendary. There are a lot of options.

But, the one constant that everything hinges on is the loot crate system. Players earn credits in-game and can use those to buy one of three types of crates: Hero, Starfighter, or Trooper. Inside those are randomized loot, but they are guaranteed to be one or two character Star Cards, another item (like a victory pose of a vehicle Star Card), and some crafting parts. Oh yeah, you can eventually "craft" lower cards to higher levels.

All of these can be unlocked through playing, as credits are earned after each match. It seems like 200 credits is a fairly standard haul for a single match (not counting cumulative challenges which also contribute credits). A single Hero crate is 2,200 credits; a Starfighter crate is 2,400; and a Trooper crate is 4,000. (Images in the gallery below via GameSpot.)

For those who don't want to grind through multiplayer matches to earn crates, we've just learned the final pricing for Battlefront II's microtransactions. Those use crystals, which are an entirely different currency than credits. Ignoring the 10 percent discount for EA Access members, here's how much they cost: 500 crystals is $5; 1,000 crystals is $10; 2,100 crystals is $20; 4,400 crystals is $40; and 12,000 crystals is $100. They're all available to buy now on Microsoft's store.

While the credit-based cost of crates can seem steep, the crystal-based cost is more reasonable. Hero crates run 110 crystals, Starfighter crates are 120 crystals, and Trooper crates are 200 crystals. Certainly, the crystal price was designed to seem more alluring. At that rate, you can get 60 of the high-tier Trooper crates at the $100 price point.

But, you know, it's your money so do what you want.

News:: Here are a few things you probably aren't going to like when you play World of Warcraft: Classic

As a Vanilla World of Warcraft player who has been present during every expansion, I've seen the game grow and regress in myriad ways.

World PVP eventually became a shell of its former self, "looking for group" functionality (LFG) was added so people didn't need to fruitlessly attempt to find 39 other people to play with, quests were streamlined so you didn't need to access a database to find them -- depending on who you ask these features either "ruined" WoW or "made it accessible."

Here are a few things from Vanilla World of Warcraft that players probably won't be enjoying so much when the Classic edition arrives.

News:: Of course ‘Star Wars: Battlefront II’ is getting 'The Last Jedi' content

Fans of a galaxy far, far away are paying attention to two countdowns leading up to the holidays: The release of Star Wars: Battlefront II on November 17th and the next film in the saga, The Last Jedi, which comes out on December 15th. In a shrewd (but not unexpected) move, publisher EA has announced that the first batch of new (and free) content featuring locations and heroes from the new movie will be added to the game days before The Last Jedi hits theaters.

News:: Review: Monopoly for Nintendo Switch

At one point or another, everyone has played Monopoly. It may have been on one of the numerous console iterations or the various themed board games, but most people have been subjected to the terrors of Mr. Monopoly’s menacing grin. A lot of the fun in Monopoly doesn’t come from its loose interpretation of real estate, but more so how much of an asshole you can be to your friends.

While this Switch port of the “classic” real estate trading game will let you bankrupt your buddies in public at any time, there isn’t a whole lot else this brings to the table. It also has a bunch of performance issues and an insane price that hinder an otherwise decent package.

News:: L.A. Noire's remaster changes button prompts to make Cole less psycho

Team Bondi's L.A. Noire had a very troubled history before its launch in 2011. Numerous delays and completely unacceptable working conditions led to Rockstar Games stepping in to publish the title. Even before that, though, came some subtle script changes that inevitably ruined the end product.

If you aren't up on the history of the title, the original premise for L.A. Noire was that you were playing a cop that doubted everyone. As such, the original three prompts were "Coax," "Force" and "Accuse," and all dialogue was recorded with that in mind. Later, these prompts changed into "Truth," "Doubt" and "Lie," but everything else remained the same. It had the side effect of turning Cole into a psychopath when selecting "Doubt," which has spawned a bunch of memes based on his angry demeanor.

For the remastered release of the game (as Eurogamer points out), it looks like Rockstar is tweaking those button prompts to better reflect the performances. I'm not sure if "Good Cop" and "Bad Cop" accurately reflect "Coax" and "Force," but "Accuse" is certainly more in line with the original intention for the game. It also would make more sense for Cole suddenly going Hulk on that rape victim in case nine.

You can get a quick look at the change in this Switch trailer, though it barely shows the tweak.

News:: League of Legends overhauls their entire cosmetic, leveling, reward, and rune system

Riot Games has shaken up League of Legends many times in the past on a mechanical level, but now it's time to alter the way it approaches crafting, items, and the meta-game of leveling. As part of the pre-season patch 7.22, the entire rune (stat) system has been overhauled, which brings a heap of Champion and item balancing with it, leveling is now uncapped, loot boxes are more prominent, and IP boosts have been removed entirely from the game.

So let's break this down and highlight some of the big takeaways. First off, IP, the in-game currency (compared to RP, the premium currency you need to purchase, which still exists) is gone. Now the earned currency is just merged into Blue Essence (BE), which can be used to purchase items and Champions (but not most skins directly, that still takes RP).

You can also level up indefinitely past the previous cap of 30 and earn rewards, unlocking loot chests along the way (just like Heroes of the Storm). So in other words, other than the rune system that does alter gameplay, none of this matters if you don't have any intention of spending money on League. You can still earn Champions for free with Blue Essence, and if you have a legacy account, you'll unlock 5000 essence after your first game, which is almost enough to buy a new Champion for 6300.

I'm mixed on the changes, but we need more time to see how they settle in. I do like the idea of earning more than before through leveling, and that the new rune system is a lot more user friendly than before.

Twitch.tv, the streaming and social platform popular among video game fans, inked a multi-year deal with Chess.com. The partnership is part of a push to promote both chess streams and major events.

It might sound a bit silly at first, but chess is probably the only good, pure game. It's fascinating to watch and playing chess falls somewhere between PUBG's final circle and asking an attractive human out on the "very stressful things" scale.

News:: South Park: Phone Destroyer is now available and ready to insult Native Americans

If you forgot South Park: Phone Destroyer was a thing, you’re probably not alone.

Announced during Ubisoft’s E3 presentation, we haven’t heard a blip about it since the reveal. A few weeks ago it was added to Google Play’s upcoming games list and today you finally have the chance to download it on iOS and Android. The app is Free-to-Play and I expect many well-written pieces contrasting the microtransactions found here to those South Park famously railed against in the classic episode “Freemium Isn’t Free.”

I have played it for all of ten minutes and so far it’s enjoyable. Phone Destroyer is like other card-based action games found on mobile. You play as the new kid who is always on his phone, called into action by Cartman during a game of Cowboys vs. Indians. Judging by the artwork released so far, that motif will quickly be dropped for costumes and cards that span sci-fi, pirates, fantasy and more.

Each card in your deck has an energy cost and there is an ever-filling energy meter at the bottom of the screen that will let you put new cards into play. Only one type of card can be in play at a time, so no doubling up on Sheriff Cartmans. Cards have different classes including tanks, ranged, and assassin, filling the generic RPG roles we should all be accustomed to by now. Your customizable avatar acts as the home base and if you run out of HP, it’s game over. The gameplay is fun, quick and runs well on my mid-tier phone. Players can either compete against one another in PVP or challenge the AI in the campaign.

Of course, the best thing about South Park is the writing. Even in my brief time with the game there have been some lines that had me genuinely laughing. There’s also a bunch of politically incorrect comments on Native Americans that shouldn’t surprise anybody. It’s a South Park game, we all know what we’re getting into here.

Phone Destroyer requires a consistent internet connection and from what I’ve experienced so far it better be a strong one. When I opened a free pack of cards my connection dropped or glitched or something and I wasn’t able to claim them. Guess that means I’ll be deleting the app and reinstalling it later when I’m not in the signal crushing void known as my office.

News:: Hulu is now available on Switch

Nintendo launched the Switch back in March without a single third-party streaming app. While I was plenty happy to have the hybrid console be a dedicated gaming machine, more than a few people were a little upset that they couldn't stream Netflix or Hulu to the device. While the movie giant is still MIA, at least Hulu is now available to use on the go, at home, in the bathroom, on a boat, with a goat, on a moat...

You'll be able to find the app when the eShop updates (which is typically 12 PM EST). After that, I guess my free time will go out the window. I've been re-watching a lot of South Park and Hulu has all of the old seasons remastered in HD, uncensored and widescreen. It is super fuckin sweet, you guys!

News:: Preview 'LA Noire' Switch gameplay before next week's launch

Excited to try LA Noire on your Switch November 14th? Good, because Rockstar Games has something to help make the wait a little easier: A gameplay trailer of the detective simulator running on Nintendo's hybrid portable/home console. From the looks of it, using touchscreen controls for things like adjusting a cypher or making interrogation choices looks pretty natural, but we'll have to wait until we can actually play it to gauge how they work in the real world. Same goes for motion controls with the Joy-cons. If you were holding out for the HTC Vive version, you'll have to wait just a bit longer. Rockstar recently announced that one is delayed until sometime in December.

News:: Zelda: Breath of the Wild's new free gift involves crafting materials

Nintendo has done a pretty good job when it comes to its Zelda: Breath of the Wild SpotPass-esque news program. It's kept it relevant through semi-regular updates, all of which are accessed in the easy to find News portion of the Switch UI.

As a reminder, this out-of-game News app basically serves as a way for developers to give curated updates on their games (RIP Miiverse), and with Zelda specifically, they're looking at ways to provide free items kind of like a mini-DLC initiative.

This week the new "Tips from the Wild" segment involves armor leveling crafting items, which can be traded into the Great Fairies for upgrades -- Electric Keese Wings and Yellow Chuchu Jellies. Just head over to the app, click the listing, and boot up Breath of the Wild from it and you're good!

Stock up too, just in case the upcoming second DLC utilizes some of those items.

News:: Capcom Cup 2017 will be a three-day event, retains brackets

This December, the best Street Fighter V scrappers in the world will gather in Anaheim, California for the 2017 Capcom Cup. The pugilists will throw down in the culmination of a year's worth of tournament-battling and CPT point gathering.

This year's event will take place over three days, rather than the usual two, beginning on Friday, December 8, with the Last Chance Qualifier being played at the Anaheim Hilton, just outside the Convention Centre. These competitors will battle it out through Saturday, with the Top Eight competing for ultimate glory on Sunday. Registration for the Last Chance Qualifier is open for registration now at smash.gg, registration is $20, rising to $40 on the day. The qualifier is capped at 256 players.

This year's event is also sticking with a traditional bracket system, foregoing the Group Phases, as was originally announced. The Group system was originally planned in an effort to make timing more accurate, involving less standing around and questioning for competitors and event staff. The Capcom Cup team are continuing to look into this as an option for future tournaments.

Once the dust has settled and we have a 2017 champion, then the road to Season Three, and the launch of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, begins, with the updated title scheduled for release January 16, 2018.

I'd also like to take a moment to announce that I, personally, will not be entering the Capcom Cup this year. I lost all my CPT points down the back of the sofa and as such do not qualify for the Top 32. Hopefully someone else will take Juri to victory in my honour. Actually, don't, because she needs some frikkin' buffs next year, badly.

News:: World of Warcraft: Legion's potential last raid, Antorus the Burning Throne, is out this month

Blizzard has finally announced when Antorus, the Burning Throne is going to arrive in World of Warcraft: Legion -- November 28 for normal and Heroic difficulties. All that stands in their way is the heart of the planet itself.

So that's for hardcore raiders to worry about. For casual players, LFR capabilities (read: a simplified "looking for raid" version you can queue into without a group) start on December 5 with the first wing, followed by the second wing on December 19, the third on January 2, and the fourth on January 16.

So let's sum up what's next for Legion before the next expansion, Battle for Azeroth, presumably drops sometime in the fall of 2018. You basically have Antorus Mythic progression or LFR to entertain you early in the year, then the scaling changes are coming for the level 1-60 experience -- allowing you more freedom when leveling alts (alternate characters).

It stands to reason that since Blizzard has been so adamant about supporting Legion more than Draenor that there might be a light raid (like Trials of Valor) in addition to some more story content leading into the new big Horde versus Alliance skirmish. I've been pretty satisfied with how they've handled it so far, so I'm going to be fine with taking a few months off here and there until the next hotness drops.

News:: Overwatch's Moira isn't as OP as they'd have you believe

Overwatch's 26th hero Moira was revealed at Blizzcon last week, and she's been available on the PC's Public Test Realm (PTR) since Monday. I've been trying the vampiric biomancer out since then, and I'll expand on her abilities below.
