News::Video Game Face Off: Call of Duty vs. Doom

Alex from DC writes: What was the fairest way to compare two franchises a generation apart? How could you honourably put the two side-by-side without delving so far into the abyss that the entire exercise became irrelevant? How on earth could you possibly determine a fair winner?

News::Machines at War 3 Review on CalmDownTom

Machines at War 3 presents itself in two main stages of play: Building and Combat. Building is the slow, meticulous process of designing and developing your base to become the perfect impregnable fortress, whilst combat provides a fast paced alternative where quick thinking will see you through to success.

News::Halfbrick's Fish Out Of Water out on April 18

Halfbrick, makers of hits such as Fruit Ninja , Jetpack Joyride, and many more, are set to release Fish Out Of Water this week on April 18 for iOS devices as a universal app. Their latest title sees you flicking an assortment of sea creatures as far as possible in the ocean. There will be various types of fish you have to flick, all while dealing with random weather patterns.

We fingered these fishes back at GDC and quite liked Halfbrick's latest mobile title. The Australian company has yet to steer me wrong with their titles and I'll be picking this one up for for $0.99 once it's out.

News::God game Reus hits Steam, GOG.com, and more in May

After following Abbey Games' promising Reus for a while now, it's great to hear that the 2D god game has secured a not-too-distant release date and a fair few launch platforms. Come May 16, 2013, it will be accessible from platforms like Steam, GOG.com, Desura, and GamersGate.

Reus centers around giants who can cultivate and indirectly influence humanity. The trailer above gives the sense that this will be a laid-back experience, but we all know how these situations end; someone's leaving in a body bag.

According to Abbey, "the game is shaping up to what we want it to be. Also, all things considered (mostly empty bank-accounts), we feel the timing of May is quite convenient."

News::Gamespot- Age of Empires II: HD Edition Review

GS:The appeal of Age of Empires II: HD Edition is readily apparent. After all, the original Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and its expansion are so beloved that there is still a healthy modding and multiplayer community devoted to the game. This is an impressive feat for a real-time strategy game that came out over a decade ago, especially when you consider that the official multiplayer matchmaking service was shut down years ago. A prettier version of AOEII with easier multiplayer matchmaking and mod support (via Steam's servers and Steam Workshop) is a solid idea. Unfortunately, Hidden Path's HD edition of Ensemble Studios' classic RTS suffers from a variety of bugs and missed opportunities.

News::First chapter of Soul Sacrifice released as a demo

Yes, the first chapter of Soul Sacrifice is what makes up the demo released today on PlayStation Network. As if that weren't reason enough to give this disturbed third-person action game a try, save files are compatible with the full Vita title; transferring your data over will unlock the exclusive Spirits' Heart item for summoning a stone golem. And we both know you like stone golems.

As covered in the PlayStation Blog post, multiplayer functionality for ad-hoc and online play is also featured, though the online option is restricted to those who play prior to Soul Sacrifice's launch on April 30, 2013. After that point, only single-player and local multiplayer will be accessible.

"We knew that cutting out a small section of the game and saying, 'Isn't this part fun?' would not show the users the full potential of the game," said designer Keiji Inafune. "We figured that it wouldn't make sense if the users could not have the 'I want to play more' feeling."

News::On the grid: GRID 2 multiplayer integrates RaceNet

Integrated statistic tracking and social networking features with videogames is no new concept, even in the racing genre, but the road warriors at Codematers look to be adding a lot more to their RaceNet with the upcoming release of GRID 2 .

RaceNet does have many features found in most of its contemporaries; easily viewable player and race statistics, global leaderboards, and weekly challenges for players, to name a few. One of the most interesting and unique features that the feature has to offer is uploading videos to share with friends and rivals alike, along with a comment system in place for some nice cordial conversation with your fellow racers.

I think that the addition of uploading race videos is a fantastic feature, especially for racing game fans. You can relive the glory of your victories or study the moves of your opponent in order to get the upper hand. Oh, the cars look nice too.

News::Battlefield 4 head dismisses motion control as a ‘gimmick’

Motion control is a ‘gimmick’ that won’t be implemented in Battlefield 4 because it adds nothing to the game, DICE executive producer Patrick Bach has said.

Bach also suggested that other companies have been “throwing money” at the studio to implement motion control in its games, but it has resisted.

Motion control is expected to play a large role in PlayStation 4’s next-gen offering through the use of DualShock 4 and PS Eye, and Microsoft’s next Xbox is expected to ship with a new, improved Kinect camera. But it’s not part of DICE’s plans with its next-gen shooter, says Bach. “We are not interested in things that don’t make the game better,” he told us. “There are a lot of gimmicks – people throwing money at us – ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing’. No, it doesn’t make the game better.”

“We are extremely open to innovation, but if it’s a gimmick, there’s no point unless it adds value to the player. Touch screens used to be a gimmick, because no-one could get it to work until iPhone came out and used it right. It adds to the experience, and now everyone is doing it. To us it’s the same with motion control and perceptual gaming in general; if it adds, great. If it’s a gimmick, ignore it.”

Battlefield 4 was revealed at GDC 2013 – you can watch the 17 minute reveal video and read our first impressions of the title through the links. Bach was speaking as part of a Battlefield 4 interview to be published in full later today.

News::Tekken helped this MMA fighter learn some moves

Uriah Hall is a rising middleweight MMA fighter and part of his success can be attributed to, of all things, Tekken . This latest episode of Vice's Fightland follows Uriah as he describes how Tekken helped with his training.

"I’d go into practice mode and have the computer just spar me back and forth almost like regular training. I would just keep playing until I see something that I'd do or I like, and I would just pick up on it. And for me, I don't know, visually it was almost like my body just adjusted to it, so when I started to spar moves that I would see it would just come back, like that. It was just something I couldn't explain.

“Every time I would see a cool move on Tekken, I would just practice it till I got good at it. And when I do it in training they'd be like ‘what the hell is that!’”

Obviously he didn't become an expert just by playing Tekken alone, more that some of the moves he would see were adapted into his brain. Like Taskmaster. He's a real life Taskmaster, everyone.

Be sure to watch Uriah knock a guy out with his spinning kick right after his Tekken talk too. Just brutal!

News::This past weekend's Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Double XP event is extended until Tuesday

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Double XP weekend event that was originally scheduled to end this morning will be extended until early Tuesday. The even allows fans to earn twice as much experience while playing the popular first-person shooters multiplayer mode on all systems. A likely reason for the Double XP events extension is due to the Xbox Live connectivity problems that gamers experience over the past weekend. Since many Xbox 360 players would have thus been unable to take part in the Double XP weekend, Treyarch has extended the event into the week for all systems.

News::Ubisoft publishing randomly generated frantic platformer Cloudberry Kingdom this spring

The two-man dev team over at Pwnee Studios has revealed that its randomly generated platformer Cloudberry Kingdom will be heading to PS Vita later this spring. And it's all thanks to Ubisoft. Cloudberry Kingdom first captured the attention of the gaming public when it appeared on crowdfunding site Kickstarter last year. By that time, however, the Pwnee Studios duo (Jordan Fisher and TJ Lutz) had already been working on the project for three years. Apparently, that's how long it takes two dudes to develop an algorithmic level design system capable of making an infinite number of "insane Mario levels".
