News::Halo fan-made PC MMO, Project Contingency, receives large new update, new info revealed

One thing that many PC gamers will attest to is the severe lack of Halo in their gaming lives (provided they game exclusively on PC). With only the original Halo: Combat Evolved and its sequel, Halo 2, available for PC, and with the upcoming release of Xbox One-exclusive Halo: The Master Chief Collection, PC gamers are sure to feel the pain within the Master Chief-less void in their lives come November 11th. Fortunately, a team of Halo fans and indie game developers have been hard at work on a particularly interesting Halo project for PC called Project Contingency - a fan-made, free-to-play, massively multiplayer online Halo video game that runs on CryEngine 3.

News::Games Asylum | Alien: Isolation review

GamesAsylum: "Auto-saving has made gaming considerably easier over the years. No longer do we have to remember to save progress every few minutes; if we die we simply go back to near where we left off, making the consequences of failure minimal at the most. Thats not the case in Alien: Isolation. This deep space survival horror uses save stations that in some instances at the start of the game, in particular can be far apart. This isnt down to lazy or bad design though. Its actually the opposite when the stakes are high youre more determined not to die, thus making the experience all the more tense. Our most chilling moment came when the Alien was stood right in front of a save station. With a good 15 to 20 minutes of play at stake we hid under a desk with baited breath and sweaty palms, hoping that it would give up trying to discover our location. It wasnt until it climbed back up into an air duct its usual lurking place that we breathed a deep sigh of relief, and...

Yesterday, Alone in the Dark: Illumination went up for pre-order on Steam. The "Eldritch Edition," as it were, with a mildly reduced price, exclusive weapon and character skins, blah blah blah.

Today, Atari is finally showing video of the game.

Sort of cocked up the order there, eh?

Also, you can't call a four player co-op game "Alone in the Dark." I mean, you can, but come the heck on. The creator of the original Alone in the Dark has a new game coming out that you can read about here in a bit. I say buy it instead.

News::Review: Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut - Nlife

Nlife: "With its 2D visuals and seemingly flat environments, Lone Survivor might seem like a simplistic take on the horror genre. Ultimately however, it's under the limitations of this simplicity that the game really shines, leaving just enough to the imagination without seeming too bare. Through the blurred lens of it's admittedly tired pixelated graphics, environments drip with atmosphere, creatures shamble along menacingly, and the search for answers is always compelling. Though it takes some getting used to, partly due to a baffling map system, the psychological horror of Lone Survivor can extend far beyond the confines of the television screen."

News::Resident Evil Revelations 2 Preview - GameRevolution

GameRevolution: As a self-professed under-informed enthusiast of the Resident Evil franchise, I felt criminally unprepared for the hands-on opportunity I got with Resident Evil: Revelations 2 in a recent demo. With PlayStation 4 controller in-hand, I got to check out an early build of the game as it is currently in development with the Japanese market in the lead and a Western release following closely behind. Where the previous Revelations game landed on Nintendo 3DS, pushing an immersive experience in 3D, the game did well on console and the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 platforms take the lead with Revelations 2.

News::Summer Camp is a survival horror game where you can play as the killer

This teaser trailer for Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp isn't much to go off, but the concept -- a third-person survival game inspired by '80s slasher films -- is strong enough that I'm listening.

In this first game, you'll play as a teenage camp counselor alongside other players trying to survive until dawn (as if that means you're truly safe) -- or the killer. That could be good! Or not! I don't recall there being many attempts to recreate the movie genre in videogames.

Breach & Clear developer Gun Media is on point for Summer Camp but the studio is working with special effects legend Tom Savini and Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini. Can't say I have high expectations for the game, but we'll see. Hope it's decent.

News::The Swindle will hack your difference engine in 2015

Size Five Games, previously known as Zombie Cow Studios (the studio behind the twin-stick edutainment STD shooter Privates and point-and-click adventure titles such as Time Gentleman, Please!), has released the debut trailer for its upcoming stealth-action game The Swindle.

Described as a "Steampunk Cybercrime Caper," Size Five's Dan Marshall says he likes to think of The Swindle as "a stealth game for the rest of us." The developer elaborates by adding:

"I suck at stealth games, I have neither the patience nor the disposition to creep slowly behind someone hoping they don’t turn around on an AI's whim. The Swindle is my answer to that – it's in your interest to remain undetected as long as possible on a heist, but being discovered and setting all the alarm bells ringing feels more like an inevitability than a fail state. At that point, the game switches from being a sneaky-sneaky stealth game to an all-out-action race against the clock."

The gameplay hook centers around sneaking undetected into procedurally generated buildings, hacking their systems to drain them of funds and then making a daring escape with all the loot. Your ill-gotten gains can then be used to upgrade your character to take on even bigger and more dangerous jobs.

Marshall's experience with the genre squares fairly well with my own. While I don't dislike stealth-based games, it's encouraging to see the developer acknowledge that the genre isn't a good fit for everybody, and is actively working to strike a balance between stealth and action that will hopefully keep impatient people like me invested in their game.

The Swindle will be going into closed beta in a few months, so, if this is something you'd be interested in taking part in, you're invited to follow @danthat on Twitter for more details.
