News:: GamersGate 12th anniversary sale: 25% off Resident Evil 7, cheapest Dishonored 2

Twelve years in the digital PC gaming business is pretty impressive by all accounts. Today the Sweden-based GamersGate has turned a dozen years old and is holding an Anniversary Sale. Tons of titles, many of which are recent releases, are at impressive prices.

Unfortunately, this is not a long lasting sale. Many deals from publisher catalogs have less than 24 hours to go, such as the Ubisoft and Capcom titles listed below. If you spot a price you like, we'd pick it up now rather than later - the next time most of these reach these price level should be in the upcoming Spring Sale.

Games that have reached historic new low price, according to our database are: Ashes of Singularity, Dishonored 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, Galactic Civilization III, Steep Gold Edition, Street Fighter V, and Watch_Dogs 2.

News:: Konami makes waifu wars literal with Bombergirl

With Super Bomberman R making its way to the Switch, I had hoped it meant Konami was going to usher in a new age of Bomberman games. But who could've guessed that meant introducing a new series full of buxom ladies? Announced at Japan Expo 2017, Bombergirl is an arcade release with four-on-four co-operative gameplay where teams try to destroy each other's bases.

Konami's description of the title is especially hilarious. Emphasis is my own:

As Bombergirl, not Bomberman, this is an enjoyable new title with new game elements that is not only fun to play, it is also fun to watch.

Based on the block-destroying gameplay of BombermanBombergirl tasks players with destroying the opposing team’s base before the other team in four-versus-four cooperative battles. By adding new game properties such as this, it is not only fun to play, it is also fun to watch. And with the button that pops out at the end, a match of Bombergirl is a sight worth seeing.

By raising strong and cute Bombergirls, you can make use of not only bombs, but various other skills. You can proceed through the match with the upper hand by strategically using skills. Bombergirl will have exciting matches that you can’t take your eyes off until the very end.

We get it, this game has cute anime girls. It'll be playable during the Expo in Japan this weekend, but there's currently no word of a release date. I hope it releases in the West in some form. Cute Bomberman is my aesthetic.

News:: Don't expect to see a new Skylanders console game this year

During a recent call for investors at Activision, an executive of the company has stated that there will not be any new console-based instalments in the Skylanders series released this year.

This means that 2017 will be the first year to see no new Skylanders titles on home consoles since the series' inception in 2011. Although there will be a port of Skylanders: Imaginatorswhich is meant to be somewhat stripped-down when compared to its counterparts on other home consoles, as it lacks compatibility with some of the toys that are still supported on other platforms.

While home consoles won't be receiving any new Skylanders games this year, Activision is still working on a mobile title in the series, with an official release date still forthcoming.

To be fair, this news doesn't exactly come as much of a surprise. About a year ago, during a massive round of layoffs at Activision, the publisher admitted that its then-most-recent instalment in the Skylanders series -- Skylanders: Superchargers -- had underperformed quite dramatically. It would be reasonable to assume that there was a lot riding on the success (or lack thereof) of the then-upcoming Skylanders: Imaginators.

It also needs to be mentioned that back in May last year, Disney shuttered the studio behind Disney Infinity; a series of games that was seen as a significant rival to Skylanders. The rationale behind this decision by Disney was that sales for its toys-to-life franchise were in decline, and it was becoming unfeasible to continue working on new instalments.

News:: No Code and Devolver team up for horror compilation Stories Untold

I'm glad I came across this trailer, because if I hadn't, I might've overlooked Stories Untold.

On the surface, this is a text adventure game, but that simple descriptor doesn't quite encapsulate it, as evidenced by this intriguing teaser. Stories Untold is a "compilation tape of four episodes from the now cancelled series of the same name, including a remaster of the original pilot episode 'The House Abandon.'" Know it? The pilot was and still is playable for free through indie gem collector itch.io.

The developer, No Code, has partnered with Devolver Digital and they're set for a fast-approaching February 27, 2017 launch on PC. I didn't play The House Abandon, but I've heard good things.

News:: The Walking Dead: A New Frontier gets its third episode in March

One of the tricky things about being patient with an episodic series you're midway through is not knowing when the next part is coming. Next month? Next quarter? TBD? No! Not that dreaded acronym.

That's why I try to wait it out until the end and so far, so good on the Telltale front with The Walking Dead: A New Frontier. We are -- well, not me, but maybe you! -- two episodes down given that the December debut was a two-parter. Episode three, Above the Law, is expected to land in March.

News:: Head back to Liberty City in 'GTA IV' on Xbox One

Grand Theft Auto V recently shipped 75 million copies, but if you wanted to play what came before it on Xbox One you were out of luck. Until now. Starting today, Grand Theft Auto IV and its $50 million expansion packs will be playable on Microsoft's latest console. The base game and "The Ballad of Gay Tony" will run you $20 each, while the biker-focused expansion "The Lost and Damned" is $10.

News:: Project CARS 2 locked in for a late 2017 release

Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Bandai Namco have re-revealed Project CARS 2 with a "late 2017" release in mind for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Notice anything different in this trailer?

Along with upwards of 60 tracks and 170 cars, the studio is bringing out expanded weather conditions for the racing sim sequel. Players will have to contend with snow and ice, as well as mud, and there will be new seasonal, dynamic weather effects to keep the place looking nice and pretty.

And for the folks who are way into Project CARS, the sequel will have VR support and can also handle a staggering 12K resolution by "linking three 4K PC monitors together to present a panoramic driver's view." I wonder how much a rig like that would cost. I wonder, and I weep for my aging PC.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that Project CARS 2 will have an Online Championships mode in which you can make and join racing leagues, something Slightly Mad says fans have been requesting. I wouldn't know -- I'm too far out of my element with this style of racer -- but hey, I'm happy for ya.

News:: Sledgehammer's new Call of Duty game has 'traditional combat'

Where do you go from space? From "infinite" warfare? Rather than charge forward and continuously raise the stakes, presumably, you pause, weigh your options, and start heading in the other direction.

In a financial report, Activision said that the next Call of Duty title -- an as-yet-unnamed 2017 release in production at Sledgehammer Games -- "will take [the series] back to its roots."

That statement can mean a whole lot of things, but for added context, Activision chief operating officer Thomas Tippl told investors that Infinite Warfare "underperformed" and "for a portion of our audience, the space setting just didn't resonate." (No kidding!) With respect to this year's Sledgehammer-developed Call of Duty, "traditional combat will once again take center stage," he elaborated.

Finally, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg added that the project was given the go-ahead "over two years ago," and the game's reveal will happen "soon" (though I suspect we're still a couple months out).

News:: The PS4 Kingdom Hearts collection has a Square Enix store special edition

Disney is the king of marketing. It does make a ton of movies, but what really brings in the cash is how much merchandise it hocks. If you go to any of the Disney parks, you'll find trinkets for your park bracelet, those stupid penny machine stamp things, popcorn mugs, and numerous pins. These pins are hugely sought after by collectors and I'm sure fans have been driven crazy by Square Enix including officially licensed pins with the collector's editions of the Kingdom Hearts HD packs.

Well, it looks like fans will have another reason to get ornery: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD Remix on PS4 will have an exclusive Square Enix online store collector's edition. While it doesn't contain all of the neat doodads from the 2.5 Special Edition on PS3, it does have one of those treasured pins. It is also the most boring of the pins thus far, but DISNEY PINS!

Thankfully, this package doesn't cost more than the normal version of the game. If you're already looking to pick that up, I guess you might as well pre-order it from the Square Enix website. If nothing else, you could probably sell that pin for double what you pay for this re-re-release.

News:: Destiny sequel on track for 2017, says Activision

It wouldn't be an Activision earnings call without some quick mention of Destiny 2, and during the company's fiscal 2016 fourth quarter report, there was indeed a note about Bungie's secretive shooter.

Last we heard, the game was on for 2017, and according to Activision, that's still the plan today. "Full Destiny sequel in 2017 to broaden the franchise's global reach, which along with follow-on content plans, sets the stage for growth," reads a bullet point on the investor report. Yep, that's literally it.

News:: How Ethan's sleeves saved Resident Evil

I remember sitting next to my roommate, Silky, at an important meeting. We were probably hungover, maybe a bit high, or that elusive mix of both that's only achievable when you're not yet twenty-five. Our minds were foggy, to say the least, but we tried to pay some semblance of attention.

The reason I remember this meeting so well is simple. At one point, the person in charge started talking about "capital 'p' professionalism." It's a dumb term, like "synergy," that corporate team leaders like to throw out there. The speaker, jazzed up at the idea of us young Professionals doing something important, asked what the most impactful way to make a good impression was. The room was silent until Silky cleared his throat and ventured an answer.

"Dress like you smell good."

News:: Grand Theft Auto IV is out now on Xbox One

Those with some spare time on their hands might feel inclined to return to the alleys and gutters of Liberty City. That's more possible now because Grand Theft Auto IV and its add-ons The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony have all split over to Xbox One through the backward compatibility program.

It might be a tough draw, as GTA IV is considered among the most tedious in the series. Some folks thought it was over the line how the game always urged protagonist Niko Bellic to go bowling.

News:: Hot deal: 25 percent off PlayStation Plus one-year subs

Now through February 10, Groupon is selling off PlayStation Plus one-year cards on the cheap with a $15 discount. For the first time since the holidays a PS Plus card has dropped below the $50 mark.

This is of course a physical card that Groupon Goods is offering, and is not a digital code. That said, delivery is free. With stock limited, we would not be surprised if it sold out before its February 10 expiration date. (As of writing over 5,000 units have been sold).

If your membership is already good for a few months it could still be worthwhile to pick up a card as it's a common practice to stack PS Plus memberships. Tack on the additional 12-month subscription to your existing membership and you won't have to think about renewal in the near future.

Having said that, if you don't bother with any titles that requires an online component (because who needs friends), you can ignore this deal. For those wondering, the current PS Plus "free" games can be found here.

News:: New Baroque-style RPG Greedfall announced, claims choices will matter

Every role-playing game and its grandma claims to change drastically based on decisions made in game, yet almost none of them live up to it. French developer Spiders (The Technomancer, The Testament of Sherlock Holmes) makes a similar claim in its announcement of Greedfall, a fantasy RPG designed using a 17th century aesthetic coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

This darker-toned fantasy will have the typical RPG fanfare of magic and a large explorable world filled with secrets as well as characters to interact with. It will also feature "diplomacy" and stealth mechanics as alternative means to complete quests along with combat.

News:: South Park: The Fractured But Whole is hit with another delay

South Park: The Fractured But Whole has been one of my more anticipated games this year. Stick of Truth was a fantastic surprise, so the fact we'll have to wait a little longer on its hilarious looking sequel really stings. Once slotted for a Dec 2016 release before getting shuffled to Q1 2017, the sequel is now primed for a release in Ubisoft's next fiscal year ranging from April 2017 to March 2018, according to Polygon.

The South Park series is no stranger to delays as Stick of Truth was bumped from 2012 to 2014, so I'm sure the delays are more to deliver a fully fleshed out product than something to worry about. Considering how much writing and effort went into the first game, is it wrong to hope for more? Since there won't be the same level of fun exploring the town as there was in the first game (celebrating almost every season of the series), I'm hoping the sequel still has tricks up its sleeve.

I do hope it isn't a long delay, however.

News:: IO Interactive is developing a new IP

Best known for the Hitman series, IO Interactive has also developed the Kane & Lynch series, as well as one-off titles like Freedom Fighters and Mini Ninjas. According to a new job posting, the studio is now looking for someone who has experience working in Unreal Engine.

After the success of Hitman Season One, it has been confirmed IO will make a second season. So, it appears the developer will be have to split duties to work on Hitman Season Two and this new title. Coming to associate IO with Hitman and to a lesser degree Kane & Lynch, I'm curious as to what it'll come up with. Mini Ninjas was quite different from the rest of its lineup and surprisingly good, but it didn't take off in popularity. I wonder if it'll do something that drastically different again.

News:: Twitch 'Communities' help you find specific streams

Despite YouTube and Facebook's best efforts, Twitch is still the king of video game live streaming. The platform's popularity has given rise to a new problem though: discoverability. When so many different people are streaming, how do you find the channels that suit your particular interests? Enter "Communities," a new type of hub page that users can build around specific games or topics. They can be about almost anything -- speedrunning, comedy, or the joys of Jet Grind Radio. Each community is public and listed in a new Community directory. Streamers can then "target" them so their broadcast appears on the page's "stream wall."

News:: Oculus closes 200 Best Buy demo stations, begging the question 'does anyone want to demo VR?'

Forget the idea of pinkeye and the fear of germs from slipping your head (and hair/part of your face) into a VR headset that's been used hundreds of times, VR has always had a "demo" problem.

When I was first shown VR, it was some lousy tech demo that turned me off. But after strapping in my consumer grade Oculus Rift and spending several weeks immersed in every launch game, I was more than happy with the idea of spending a lot of my time gaming with modern virtual reality. It's just such a massive step up from older technology, but it's a hard sell -- literally, since the cheapest units cost whereabouts of $500 or more, before you even have the hardware to run it.

Where am I going with this? Well, VR is still a niche thing in the consumer circuit, and even though wireless headsets and cheaper subsized pricing is coming, it's not there yet. People are responding to that, as 200 of Oculus' 500 demo stations at Best Buy's across America are closing down for good. Oculus VR calls it a "seasonal" change, but when roughly half your demo stations are gone, there is a problem. According to Best Buy employees that spoke to PC Gamer, some days they don't even have one person who wants to try out the headset.

That's a problem. One among many, if the VR industry is going to force its will upon the public that their way is better. In some ways it is, sure, but I don't like the marketing and the cultist indoctrination approach that many have tried to use.

News:: Civilization VI (and other Civ games) get attractive pricing again

The Sweden-based PC digital retailer GamersGate has launched a Civilization midweek sale slashing prices on Civilization VI to prices we haven't seen since last year's winter sale. The Civ sale really isn't overly comprehensive, but does get you 26 percent off Civ VI and 30 percent off the Civ VI Deluxe Edition.

Civilization Sale

GamersGate has a few other titles on sale like Civilization: Beyond Earth and Civilization V Complete. In terms of a discount, Civ V Complete generally goes on sale for $12.50, so this is slightly better than the usual 75 percent off deal.

Civilization VI has been as cheap as $39.34, so for a non-holiday sale price it's not a terrible time to pounce on one of the most popular games of 2016. The sale ends rather quickly, tomorrow February 10 at 6pm Eastern.

News:: Review: Bleed 2

When Bleed came out in 2012, it was a great throwback to run-and-gun platformers of the late '80s and early '90s like Contra and Metal Slug. The sequel looks a lot better, builds on the foundation established in the first game beautifully, and adds some welcome new features into the mix.

In the original Bleed, pink-haired protagonist Wryn set out to become the ultimate video-game hero by defeating all other heroes on Earth. Her plan worked flawlessly, and she's been enjoying the accolades and adulation every since. But the rest of the world's heroes were the only thing keeping a massive alien armada from invading, and with them out of the picture, the aliens see Earth as ripe for the plucking.

With no other defenders available, it's up to Wryn to beat back the alien menace and save the world. Fortunately, she doesn't have to go it alone, since you can play this game with a friend.

News:: BioWare finally remembers that forcing 'good or bad' choices doesn't work for every game

BioWare used to be a master of nuance. Growing up I'd play their RPGs in awe of their ability to tell a story without having to resort to rote "this is good or bad" moral choices. Often times the outcome was grey, and you'd have to live with it (CD Projekt Red is a master at this now with Witcher 1 and 3). Those dichotomies worked for some BioWare games (KOTOR, with its light and dark force balance), but when overused, they really cheapen the "role-playing" bit of an RPG. Thankfully, they're moving away from "Paragon and Renegade" with Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazine, creative director Mac Walters noted, "What we have now [in Andromeda] is based more around agreeing and disagreeing. The reason I like that is because in the trilogy it’s like, ‘I’m gonna play Paragon,’ and then you know which way you’re moving the stick on every conversation. You don’t have to think about it, because you’re just going to hit Paragon every time. We’ve added in four tones and we’ll talk a little more in the future, but they basically allow other types of characters to express themselves in one of four different ways, and sometimes one of two different ways. And I think that gets back to that more traditional role-playing sort of feeling which is less about ‘do I want to be good or bad,’ and more about ‘how do I want to express myself.'"

I know some people dug the Paragon/Renegade thing, but I'm glad they're hinting that there will be more choices to make in Andromeda. Without resorting to forced "cool and collective/hot-headed" scenarios, we can reasonably expect the ability to have more control over the game's dialogue. The "four tones" thing scares me into thinking it's still going to be a little gamey, but the "two different ways" combination sounds more open than two choices in total.

News:: Review: We Are Chicago

Movies often base their plotlines and characters on “true events” to try and elicit a cheap emotional reaction in audiences. When one learns that the events unfolding before them actually happened to someone, it should become a lot easier to sympathize with a character. Games tend to not do this too frequently.

Sure, we had a period where the World War II setting was basically the only type of shooter being made, but most games take extreme liberties with historical periods and make that distinction up front. We Are Chicago looks to employ real-life scenarios to create a gripping drama about inner-city Chicagoan life. Its goal is to enlighten us to the plight that many people face every day.

Sadly, the end result feels devoid of life.

Messhof, the team behind indie hit Nidhogg, today announced that it's bringing critically acclaimed platformer Flywrench to PS4. News:: Nidhogg creator's Flywrench comes to PS4 next week

Before the crazed fencing game Nidhogg and its divisive-looking sequel (that's genuinely growing on me), there was Flywrench, a game "about piloting an aerobatic ship through the depths of space."

Some of you will know about Flywrench from Messhof's original freeware prototype or the enhanced 2015 PC version, and many more of you will recognize that name as one of the unlockable character cameos in Super Meat Boy. If you're totally out of your element here, just watch this trailer.

Flywrench is coming to PlayStation 4 soon -- on February 14, for $6.99 -- and it'll have 12 exclusive levels, bumping the total count up to an odd 199. Unexpected news, but very much appreciated.
