News:: Retro-bit brought brand-new Sega accessories to CES

While Nintendo's 'classic' consoles have soaked up much of the retro love lately, Sega fans do have something to look forward to. The last booth I stopped by at CES 2018 was one of my favorites, as Retro-bit showed off new officially-licensed accessories it's releasing for Sega consoles later this year, including (but not limited to) Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my hands on any of these controllers to see how they match up with the originals, but it's nice to see them upgraded with modern capabilities like USB and Bluetooth.

News:: Satisfy your Go Nagai cravings with the new Mazinger's limited U.S. screenings

If there's one thing I love about 2018, it's seeing more anime based on Go Nagai's works. Devilman Crybaby came out on Netflix recently, and Mazinger Z is getting a new movie. In other words, we might be seeing the second coming of the '70s.

Speaking of super robots, Viz Media and Toei Animation are holding a two-day Mazinger Z: Infinity showing in select U.S. theaters on February 11 and 12. As a person who's seen and read a few of Go Nagai's stuff, it's amazing to see the film get this sort of treatment.

Of course, the best part about this screening is that more people will get exposed to Ichiro Mizuki's (a.k.a. the Aniki of Anisongs) music. Since the movie takes place ten years after Koji took down Dr. Hell, I'm curious to see if it'll be accessible to newcomers. While it might not surpass Yasuhiro Imagawa's (G-Gundam and Giant Robo: The Animation's Director) take on Mazinger, there's still a chance that it can capture the franchise's exciting feeling.

If you're interested in watching the film, you can head here to see if there's a showing near you.

News:: Splatoon 2's first Splatfest of 2018 reaches its conclusion

This weekend saw not only the first Splatfest of 2018 take place, but also the first global Splatfest in some time. Players worldwide battled it out on Nintendo's arena-shooter Splatoon 2, in a fight which saw Pearl's love of the Action genre take on Marina's penchant for Comedy.

After a day of colourful carnage, Action cleanly won the vote, taking 58% of the public poll. Comedy, however, pulled itself back into the game in both Solo and Team play, scoring a narrow 51% in both modes. Thus, Comedy takes the final victory 2 - 1. I guess the power of laughter should never be underestimated, even when compared to an uzi-wielding Chuck Norris' flick.

Marina is probably pretty damn stoked to win the first Splatfest of 2018. Perhaps this could be a reversal of fortunes for the funky octopus, who came in second place to Pearl over the cumulative course of 2017. It will be interesting to see whether she builds momentum over the coming months, or whether her adorable gremlin buddy will maintain dominance.

Splatoon 2 is available now on Nintendo Switch.

News:: David Cage can't be homophobic because Ellen Page

As a gay, there is nothing more infuriating than when critics and the press praise a straight actor for playing a gay character. Unless he is being teabagged and fisted on camera, that shit ain't brave. That's just a guy doing his job. By the way, maybe if Armie Hammer was getting fisted and teabagged on camera, people would have gone to see Call Me By Your Name.

But second to that is the argument that you can't be homophobic because at one point in your life a gay was in close proximity to you. That's the position Quantic Dream founder David Cage is taking following a trio of articles accusing the studio of being of a toxic workplace. As reported in Le Monde, Mediapart, and Canard PC -- side note, don't click that last link unless you have a container of eye bleach nearby -- Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumière, Quantic Dream's co-CEO and CFO, are facing a variety of accusations including overworking staff, overlooking racist and sexist jokes including 600 crude Photoshops, and inappropriate behavior.

Le Monde -- the only paper without a paywall -- interviewed 15 former employees about their experience with the company. While Cage's work ethic is almost universally praised, his management style is not. In February of last year, an IT manager for the company was sent a cache of 600 Photoshops featuring employee faces pasted onto sometimes sexist or homophobic imagery, the earliest of which dates back to 2013. Also, there's some Nazi stuff thrown in there because of course there is.

Cage and de Fondaumière told Le Monde they only saw the images considered funny even though they were cc'd on emails containing a link to the folder with all of the questionable material. Le Monde spoke with Cage at Quantic Dream where he argued the company is not a "rugby locker room," which sounds like a play on that "locker room talk" nonsense we had to deal with in 2016. The best part of this entire piece comes directly after that when William Audureau, the article's author, notes that just behind Cage is a picture of a dick with balls dropping a fart.

Perhaps most damning is two employees recounted an incident where Cage was viewing security camera footage of a burglary and he turned to an employee of Tunisian descent and inquired if he was related to them.

News:: Weekend deals: GameStop 4 used games for $10 and Humble's Winter Sale

It's a three-day weekend for most people in the US (apology in advance if you're not getting Monday off) and there's no better time to scroll endlessly away on the web, basking in capitalism delight. If you've passed the holiday sales hungover, then this respite from our weekend deal hiatus may just be what the doctor ordered.

This week we're spotting tons of sales event with GameStop continuing with their popular pre-owned game sale where you can pick up 4 used games under $4.99 for $10. It's the same set of titles you've seen before and about 3,000 titles qualify. Most are of the old platform variety, though there are a dozen Wii U and PS4 titles, along with about sixty Xbox One games.

In Winter/New Year sale land, both GOG and Humble Store are continuing the PC digital game sale frenzy. If you missed out on Steam Store's Winter Sale because you were in a cave somewhere during much of December (just like us!), Humble Store's sale is essentially Steam Sale redux. GOG's New Year sale is slightly better in our opinion as we're spotting quite a bit more new historic low titles. In either case, check the links to both sales event below for a price breakdown on noteworthy picks.

Finally, in the hardware department, GameStop is offloading a number of pre-owned Wii U system starting at $139.99. You'll find a Wii U 32GB system with two games for $139.99 (Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed); or the better bundle for $169.99 with Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario 3D World; there's also a console-only Wind Waker themed for $139.99 but we feel this is a moot deal given no games are included.

News:: The real-life places that games made me want to visit

TV programmes, films, books and games give us the opportunity to explore distant worlds without even having to leave the comfort of our own bedrooms; they also allow us to see representations of countries and towns that we wouldn't be able to visit in person. Intercontinental travel is still as expensive as hell, and a lot of people still don't own a passport, since they don't anticipate being able to venture beyond their home country any time soon.

I have never left the European Union (well, that will change next year...) I moved to Germany from the UK three and a half years ago, so I probably do have the desire to travel pumping through my veins, but the farthest afield I have travelled from my hometown of Rotherham is a holiday to Lanzarote when I was two years old. As a youngster, my parents were nervous about long-distance flights, and as a 26 year old, the funds for my dream holiday sadly need to go towards other more pressing matters, such as saving for a deposit.

But games that do the globetrotting for me are adding to the list of places I would visit if I won the lottery. Who knows? Maybe if interest rates become anything less than godawful, I will be able to plan one or two of my dream vacations in a few years' time. So, here are the games that have wanted me to get out of my armchair and pop down to the travel agent's office.

News:: Kirby's coolest copy ability is clearly Doctor

We are a couple days out from the launch of Kirby Battle Royale, a game that could very well be Kirby’s final appearance on the Nintendo 3DS. It's a bit sad, like an end of an era, but the wait won't be too long for the pink puff's next adventure in Kirby Star Allies on the Switch. The game looks gorgeous and the new Artist and Spider copy abilities will be extremely fun to experiment with. In fact, they could be absolute fan favorites, but they and any other possible new abilities will have to be pretty amazing to surpass my favorite Kirby power.

See, I’m a simple, simple man. That’s why my parents pinned mittens on my jacket well into my 20s. For the longest time, my favorite Kirby copy was Parasol. It is simple, adorable and extremely useful. Somewhere in storage, I have a little plush Parasol Kirby because it’s so darn cute and now that I think about it it's the only pink thing I own. And that’s how it was for most of my years playing through Kirby games: I would seek out the Parasol copy ability and try to ride it through so much of the game as I can. Then came Planet Robobot.

After Triple Deluxe, I actually told myself I wasn’t going to pick up Robobot because it just looked like the same game again. I ended up getting it brand new for about $15, figuring I’d get to it down the line. That line turned out to be six months later when the lights went out during a rainstorm. So I couldn’t play my Wii U or PSTV, leaving me with just my 3DS. Figuring the lights would be on quickly, I popped open Planet Robobot planning to spend about 20 minutes or so playing it until the power was restored. It actually took an hour for PG&E to get it working again, plenty of time for me to fall head-over-heels for Doctor Kirby.

I had to correct myself the first time I saw Kirby in his Doctor costume because I thought it was more a scientist. I still do, but I’m not going to let an incorrect name stop me from talking about Kirby’s best copy ability.

Let’s start with the look. A lab coat, glasses and a head mirror (Really? The best term we can come up for that is “head mirror?”) combine for one frickin’ cute costume. And while I like the pill bottle concept art design more, Doctor Kirby’s look gives him the appearance of the world's cutest meth cook. Then there are his attacks. Kirby bashes with a clipboard, syringe, and pills that he tosses around more freely than Dr. Mario. All of that would be enough to make him my number one, but it’s the science kit maneuver that puts it over the top. With his beakers and test tubes, Kirby can whip up three different special attacks or a healing concoction that can be saved for just the right time.

Cute, powerful, and multi-functional, the Doctor Kirby copy ability is better than anything else the series has given us and there is nothing the Destructoid staff can say to make me change my mind.

News:: Review: Mom Hid My Game!

She hides the game because she loves you. She wants you to grow up to become a lawyer or doctor, certainly not someone who plays video games. Mom Hid My Game! isn't simply a game, it's a life lesson we should all take into consideration while playing it.

Originally developed and self-published by hap Inc. in the form of Hidden my game by mom 1 and 2 for mobile devices (yes, this is how they were titled, yes, you should go play them -- they're free and I can't recommend hap Inc.'s library of mobile schlock enough), Kemco gives us a culmination and sort of greatest hits from those two games with Mom Hid My Game!

News:: AGDQ 2018 draws to a close, raises over $2.2 million for charity

The curtain has dropped on Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 (AGDQ). Once again speedrunners from all over the world descended upon Herndon, Virginia to play hundreds of great (and not so great) video games, in order to raise money for charity.

Over the week, donations have poured in from across the globe. Viewers could enter competitions to win exclusive prizes and vote on in-game variables, such as save file names or narrative decisions. When the digital dust cleared seven days later, the grand total stood at an amazing $2,262,818,19. The incredible sum, which beats last year's total by some $40,000, will be donated toward the tireless efforts of the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Over the week, players smashed games ranging from AGDQ veterans such as Super Mario World and Metal Gear Solid, to modern classics, including an wild run on Resident Evil 7 and the event's finale, held on Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Video of all games has been archived and can be accessed from the event's Reddit page.

Congratulations to everyone who was a part of AGDQ 2018, whether player, presenter, tech crew or donator. You should all be very proud of your inspiring efforts and amazing results.

The next event, Summer Games Done Quick, will take place in Minnesota from June 24 to July 1 2018.

News:: Ben Heck's mini pinball game: Integrating IR sensors

The team is laser-cutting, CNC-routing and designing another PCB this week. Tune in as Ben uses Autodesk Eagle to design an infrared ball detector for the mini pinball build instead of relying on mechanical detectors, which should help keep costs down. Not all the design work has gone well, though: Felix finds he has to address issues with the main control board. What PCBs have you designed? Any difficulties you've encountered? Let us know over on the element14 Community.
