News:: To the surprise of nobody, Call of Duty: WWII is the best-selling game of 2017

If you would have asked me at the beginning of 2017 what I thought the best selling game of that year would be, I would have said, "Whatever the Call of Duty game is." Why? That's easy. Since 2014, the best selling game of every year in the US has been a Call of Duty title. From Advanced Warfare to 2016's good-but-not-great Infinite Warfare, Call of Duty is nigh unbeatable. Hell, Call of Duty has dominated the top spot at the end of the year charts since 2009, only giving up the throne once in 2013 to Grand Theft Auto V.

Yes, Call of Duty: WWII is the best selling game of 2017 despite facing such other platinum sellers as Destiny 2 and an incredibly strong NBA2K18.

News:: 'Battlefield 1' DLC adds aerial-only battles and more next month

DICE and EA have shared much more of what Battlefield 1's new "Apocalypse" DLC entails, and it's good news if you prefer to be a fighter ace than fight in the trenches. The expansion arrives in February, and its highlight is a new Air Assault mode where dogfights and airships rule. Appropriately, there are two air-only maps (London Calling and Razor's Edge). Think of it as you would the Starfighter Assault mode in Battlefront II -- it's about scratching the itch for players who jump into vehicles at every given opportunity.

News:: Fighting games (& DLC) to look forward to in 2018

[The year is 2018. Mankind has fled to the moon. The only things left to look forward to on the Earth's surface are androids and fighting games. So what's there to look forward to in 2018? Here is a probably-not-comprehensive but in-depth look at this year's fighting games, brought to you by Virtua Kazama. ~Marcel]

2017… What a year it was. We've seen a lot of things happened during that year, with the most important one being the release of the Nintendo Switch. The verdict: It sold 10 Million copies in its first year.

News:: Battlefield 1 expansion Apocalypse adding new Air Assault mode

Battlefield 1 is all set to close out its Premium Pass in February with the DLC Apocalypse.

Today, DICE detailed this fourth and final expansion. It's made up of five maps -- two of which are playable exclusively in the new Air Assault game mode -- plus melee weapons like the meat cleaver, six new guns including the Chauchat-Ribeyrolles SMG, an AA Rocket Gun for Assault players (among other gadgets), and the Hansa Brandenburg GI and Airco DH10 aircraft.

You can get an early glimpse of some of this stuff in the gallery below. Apocalypse will introduce new ranks, Service Assignments, Specializations, and Dog Tags. Also, the toxic Livens Projector.

If you missed it, the map Prise de Tahure went free this week and DICE is running a trial for Battlefield 1 that lets non-Premium players access content from the most recent expansion Turning Tides as well as They Shall Not Pass and In the Name of the Tsar. That's running until January 22.

I'm starting to regret not springing for the all-in "Revolution" edition while it was on sale.

News:: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter still holds up

Detective Paul Prospero always starts in that tunnel on those train tracks. Minutes away from discovering an abandoned train, and then seconds away from finding a legless corpse. Prospero's story -- which is really just a retelling of Ethan Carter's story -- is always the same.

We were first introduced to The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in 2014, and we've seen many retellings since then. It initially released on PC, but then a redux launched on PC and PS4. Finally Ethan Carter is on Xbox One (as of January 19), which is probably its final destination.

Even though it's old by video game standards, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter still holds up. It's still a masterclass in environmental storytelling. Some games are cracked by the sands of time, as a genre evolves and leaves them behind. Ethan Carter, with all of its macabre and fantastical and sometimes-seemingly-nonsensical plot devices, doesn't show its age. It's one of the very best of the narrative-heavy and mechanics-light games.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is billed as a mystery game, and that's an easy enough premise to draw us in. Stepping into a crime scene, gathering all the pieces, and reconstructing the order of events is a satisfying and clever means of presentation. But it's the layers to the mystery -- a village gone mad, some sort of occult presence, MONSTERS??? -- that hook us. And then it's the tangential mysteries, like a spaceman running through a forest, that make us love it.

Developer The Astronauts has taken steps to mitigate problems with the original version of Ethan Carter. A main complaint was that the "real" ending forced many players to backtrack across the whole game's open countryside. With the redux, a system was implemented that essentially eliminates any tedious retreading. It's a better game for it.

As for the Xbox port, everything's up to snuff. On Xbox One X, Ethan Carter looks incredible and runs competently. There's also a new free roam mode for taking in the scenery without the grisly details. That legless corpse really mucks up the otherwise picturesque lake.

Free roam is hardly a necessity though, and that means any platform is a fine enough place to play The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It's an enduring and endearing hallmark for immersive narratives. Maybe Ethan's story never changes, but you should really take it upon yourself to see Ethan's story at least once.

[This impressions piece is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher.]

News:: Life is Strange: Before the Storm's bonus episode will tug at your heartstrings in March

The bonus "farewell" episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm will land on all digital platforms and at retail on March 6, 2018. Our UK brethren will be getting their boxed copies on March 9. If you're wondering what these boxed copies will come with, then your decision just got a whole lot messier. Square Enix has put together three different versions for you to choose from, because why not?

The "Vinyl Edition" (available exclusively through Square Enix's online store) will include the game alongside the soundtrack on four records, a CD of the soundtrack, an art book and a presentation box for you to show off. The "Limited Edition" will contain just the game alongside the CD soundtrack. The "Standard Edition" is just for people who want a box to show off.

Each version of the game will have the bonus episode included as well as a costume pack for Chloe, a "Mixtape Mode" that lets you create your own playlist from the licensed soundtrack for the game and Episode One of the original Life is Strange game (which is already free...).

If you pre-order any of the boxed editions from selected retailers, you'll also get figurines of Chloe and Rachel that will make you cry every time you look at them. I can already feel the tears swelling up.

News:: Monster Energy Supercross' track editor is exactly what I am looking for

Monster Energy Supercross The Official Videogame is a mouthful to say, annoying to have to write out every time, and something that has been stuck in my head since I first got my hands on it last year. I’m not usually the type of person who looks forward to sports games that don’t star a fat plumber and yet I can’t get it out of my mind. My brief hands-on in October reminded me of the extreme sports games my brother and I ate up on the first PlayStation. I don’t know if it’s that rose-tinted view of my past or the fact it’s completely different from the genres I usually stick to, but I’m looking forward to this game more than any other sports title since I found out they were making a sequel to Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball.

So when I was presented with another opportunity to test out Supercross before its launch, I jumped at it.

News:: Competitive monster shooter Hunt: Showdown starts its alpha this month

Crytek's bounty hunter monster shooter Hunt: Showdown seems to be flying under the radar, but it shouldn't be. I've got it filed in my brain under "This sounds so promising. Please let it turn out well."

Set in the Louisiana swamps, it's part PvP and part PvE, with up to ten players (solo or two-person teams) competing to track, stalk, and banish monsters for cold hard cash.

"Once the [creature] was hunted, the true madness began," Nick wrote in his preview at E3. "As one teammate started the banishment (and claiming the bounty), a huge fiery spot opened up on the general map and alerted the other teams to the target." Players can kill each other to whittle down the competition prior to this point, or they can wait until the end to swoop in and steal the bounty.

If any of this sounds appealing, you should sign up for the Hunt: Showdown closed alpha.

Cretek will be randomly selecting testers on January 31 to put the "gameplay, balancing, and backend functionality" through its paces and collect feedback. As the alpha progresses, the team plans to add "new weapons, equipment, traits, and ranks."

Further down the road, Hunt will release on Steam Early Access (were you expecting otherwise?).

News:: Second trailer for Tomb Raider movie expands on the plot

When the first trailer for Tomb Raider hit I was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about it. While the film does star the awesome Alicia Vikander it also looked kind of like a hot mess of scenes from the game clumsily stuck together. Now, that can all be down to trailer editing, but it wasn't too reassuring.

I'm not so sure I'm all that reassured this time around either. The second trailer opens up the plot a lot by telling us about Trinity and their quest to do evil things. I actually really dug this storyline in both the games, but in a movie it's just not working for me. Maybe I'm more accepting of cliche when there's fun gameplay to cover it up. Nothing feels all that special about this story in film form. Why rehash the plot of the game anyway? It was already cinematic enough on its own.

I'm hoping for something enjoyable out of the Tomb Raider movie, but I'm just not seeing it yet in these trailers.

News:: Nintendo is doing that awesome 'legendary a month' giveaway for Pokemon again this year

Because of that Pokemon anniversary event last year, I always had a reason to check in and pick up another free legendary. It was a pretty cool feeling and a neat way of keeping the game relevant even for casual players, and it looks like Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are bringing it back.

Starting in February, players can net legendary Pokemon each month. They'll come in pairs of two (and you'll need two copies to get them both), starting with Dialga and Palkia in February from Pokemon Pearl and Diamond at GameStop. It'll run until November, closing out with Ho-Oh and Lugia.

To clarify, this year's promotion will work with four versions of Pokemon -- Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. In other words if you have at least two copies of the game you can net both legendaries in any given month.

News:: Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation showcases new girl Luna

But aren't we all? Following Famitsu's reveal and first look at Luna a few days ago, Koei Tecmo have released a new trailer showcasing the “cool and busty” Luna, who will be making her debut in Dead or Alive Extreme: Venus Vacation, the free-to-play PC game, currently only available in Japan.

The trailer starts off with Luna head down and butt up on a beach, asleep, because of course it does. Followed up with some volleyball gameplay and ending on her love of sweet potatoes...and falling asleep some more.

News:: Age of Empires: Definitive Edition locked in for February 20 launch

Following a delay, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is back on track and now aiming for a February 20, 2018 launch on Windows 10 PCs.

"[I]t was important for the team to treat the Age of Empires franchise with the respect it deserves, so we took the time we needed to get features like attack-move and the improved minimap exactly right, and even added things like an in-game tech tree (how did we survive 1997 without that?) that we hope fans will love," Microsoft creative director Adam Isgreen said of the later-than-expected release.

Besides gameplay updates, Definitive Edition will have rebuilt assets for 4K, LAN play and online play with Xbox Live, a new orchestral score of the original soundtrack, campaign narration for every mission, and an enhanced campaign/scenario editor with the option to share via AgeOfEmpires.com.

The idea is to "[retain] the original feel and unique gameplay that made Age of Empires so special for so many." If you'd like to play before launch, the multiplayer beta is adding participants on January 29.

News:: Humble is selling a Colossal Pile of Attack on Titan manga

I wouldn't call myself the biggest fan of Hajime Isayama's megahit manga Attack on Titan. That's because I've never actually read it, and only seen Studio Wit's anime series adaptation, which I found great-looking but way too shouty.

Thankfully, though, Humble and publisher Kodansha are now giving the likes of me a chance to see what all the fuss is about on the cheap with their Attack on Titan Universe Bundle, which will let folks pay not a lot of money for a lot of digital manga. And it's kind of a lot: 22 of the 24 released core series volumes, plus two volumes each from Lost Girls and No Regrets, spinoff series that follow Annie Leonheart and Captain Levi. The offerings go further afield as well, including 11 volumes from Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, as well as an Attack on Titan guide book, art book, and comedic asides like Attack on Titan: Junior High and Spoof on Titan.

That's a lot of reading material to tide you over until the release of the next game, or the times you're sitting on the can with your phone or pad.

P.S.: The cool picture of Mikasa from the header isn't from the manga, but is art done by ex -Final Fantasy artist Hideo Minaba for a Granblue Fantasy collaboration.

News:: New skins, sprays and icons coming to Overwatch next week

As reported yesterday, new map "Blizzard World" will be going live in Overwatch next week. Alongside the new venue, some funky new skins, sprays and other cosmetic junk is also coming to the online arena-shooter.

The new legendary-class skins are in keeping with Blizzard World's theme of the studio's catalogue, allow some of Overwatch's heroes to play dress-up as characters from other Blizz franchises. These include Diablo-themed skins for Roadhogg, Zarya and Reinhardt, Warcraft designs for Torbjorn and Doomfist, and some StarCraft gear for Orisia and Widowmaker, with the latter sporting an awesome Nova skin.

Blizzard have confirmed that there will be other new skins that have yet to be revealed, rumored to be based, once again, on the Chinese New Year. The new range of Sprays may, in fact, give away the designs for some of these outfits (Note D.Va and Hanzo, for example). Rounding out the new content is a selection of player icons for all heroes.

The Blizzard World map and related update go live in Overwatch January 23.

News:: Nintendo reveals that Minecraft was the number one download on Switch in Japan, plus the overall top 30

Numbers don't lie. Okay sometimes they do, but in this case, they likely don't.

Nintendo has provided a full list of top-earners on the Switch eShop for both Japan and the rest of the world, and it's a pretty interesting set of info. For one, Minecraft is the top-seller in Japan, re-iterating just how popular the now Microsoft-led franchise is even today.

In other regions Stardew Valley took the top spot (man, developer Eric Barone might be the next person who buys a house in Beverly Hills), followed closely by Minecraft, Sonic Mania, and Rocket League. Outside of Snipperclips the entire top five outside of Japan is dominated by multi-platform releases -- something that wouldn't have been possible on Wii U, and denotes a distinct turning point for third parties on the Switch.

Feel free to peruse the full lists below!

News:: Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time dated for the U.S. and Europe

Bandai Namco have announced the Western release date for anime adventure Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time, and it's pretty much a month away, as the game will hit Europe and America as soon as February 20.

The game, based on the popular comedic anime, sees protagonist Akko stepping up her witch game at the Luna Nova Magical Academy when she embarks on a quest to to unravel the mystery behind seven mystic artifacts which threaten to bring chaos to their scholarly world and, worse yet, spoil their Summer vacation!

Akko is accompanied by her pals, the timid, kind-hearted Lotte and the cynical but well-meaning Sucy (whose general expression resembles me, all day, every day) as the trio battle various dangers on the journey to save the school. The game blends traditional RPG elements with frantic brawler action, similar in style to Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown title.

I had the fortune to spend some time with LWA: Chamber of Time last month and although it seemed a little lacking in depth, it looks to be a cheerful, funny and entertaining title. Given that the game features a new storyline, exclusive animation and full voice-acting from the original cast. I think Little Witch Academia fans will get a kick out of taking Akko and co. on their literally spellbinding adventure.

News:: Nintendo Labo: Overpriced or innovative?

Weird Nintendo is often the best Nintendo, or so it is said. After all, two of its biggest successes (the Wii and the Switch) are far from ordinary consoles. Now, with a year of huge Switch sales behind it, Nintendo is getting even weirder with Labo -- cardboard accessories that kids can built themselves and use to immerse themselves in a game's world. So far, Nintendo has shown off a mini piano, fishing rod, robot fighting suit, remote-controlled robot walkers ... and what amounts to a cardboard house with your Switch screen built right into the middle. All of these are controlled in some way by the Switch Joy-Cons.

It's incredibly unusual and rather inexpensive (the initial sets start at $70), but it's also the kind of thing that only Nintendo would dream up. Of course, the company's imagination sometimes takes it to places that don't work as well (Wii U, Virtual Boy, the list goes on). Many of Engadget's editors had immediate reactions to Nintendo's Labo, ranging from disgust to extreme excitement -- here are some of the things we've been thinking in the day since Labo was made official.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Pro League has got a new home. Starting February 13th, the beginning of its seventh season, it'll be streamed exclusively on Facebook, along with the ESL One Dota 2 and CS:GO tournament series. ESL, the company behind the tournaments, says that full English and Portuguese coverage will include a "much more advanced" viewing experience than fans are used to, moving beyond stories, clips and select streams, thanks largely to the success of Facebook Watch.

News:: Watch Cloud and Sepiroth battle it out in the new Final Fantasy Universal Studios ride

Announced months ago, Universal Studios and Square Enix are partnering up to present the "Final Fantasy XR ride," at Universal Japan, among other projects. XR, as a reminder, is code for "VR ride," described as "super real experiences that synchronize the frantic speed and the sense of gravity of a theme park ride with astonishing advances in virtual reality that transport you to brand new super real world through sight and sound, stimulating the six senses."

Now we have an actual look at what this attraction will entail, and it seems like a Mog is operating the whole thing (much like the robot crew in Disney's Star Tours), and you'll be traveling to Midgard, riding alongside of Chocobos, and witnessing a battle between Cloud and Sepiroth. The working title seems to be "Mog Ship: Magitek Observation Guild."

Watching all of this unfold is still wild to me. As a kid I never thought I'd live in a world with Final Fantasy, Mario, and Miyazaki theme park attractions.

News:: European Gamestop sites list Red Faction: Guerilla for PS4 and Xbox One

A selection of European GameStop sites have live listings for PS4 and Xbox One releases of THQ Nordic's third-person shooter, Red Faction: Guerilla, originally released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC way back in 2009.

The open-world adventure game saw players step into the role of hero Alec Mason as he, alongside the titular revolution group Red Faction, attempted to overthrow the oppressive Earth Defence Force who rule over the terraformed planet Mars with frightening militancy. This, incidentally, is not the same Earth Defense Force that battle giant ants in Paris.

This would not be the first time THQ Nordic re-released their back catalogue to the current generation. Previous Red Faction titles, along with the Darksiders games, have also been made available to PS4 and Xbox One in the past. No doubt Guerilla will be following suit, although no release date is specified.

News:: God of War gets an ass-kicking Stone Mason Edition

While there is no confirmed release date just yet, this year will see the return of the beast-punching, head-ripping Kratos, who will return, along with his impressionable young son, to lay waste to mythological creatures of legend in Sony's God of War.

For die-hard fans, a Limited Edition of the new PS4 title is on the way. The "Stone Mason Edition" will include a steelbook edition of the game itself, complete with a digital art book, comic and a dynamic PS4 theme, as well as some exclusive in-game shield and an XP boost. Also included in the set is a cloth map, a dramatic lithograph, a talking keychain, a finger ring and a selection of small carvings.

The centrepiece of the set is a nine-inch statue of Kratos and Atreus engaged in the time-honoured, father-and-son tradition of slaughtering demons. The Stone Mason Edition will set you back around $150, which is pretty hefty, but at least there's some neat gear on offer. There's been no confirmation thus far as to whether the set will be made available outside of the U.S.

God of War is yet to receive a specific release date, but if recent murmurs are to be believed, it is expected to launch on PS4 around Spring/Summer of this year.

News:: As a dad I couldn't be more excited about Nintendo Labo

My son, Asher, was born almost three years ago on February 23, which happens to be my own birthday (send gifts). I've been waiting all these years to play video games with him. I mean, he can watch me play video games right now, and loves when I ride my motorcycle into bad guys in Breath of the Wild, but he doesn't really engage with them yet. This is mostly because his tiny little hands can't really understand the controls.

This kills me. I want to play video games with him, but I also want him to be engaged with that gameplay instead of passively watching -- and eventually having him give up on watching and start having my amiibo battle it out on the floor, while I try to resist telling him that those aren't toys and please stop chipping the paint... Oh god, why do I let him touch anything?

The point is that the tactile is still everything to him, and I kind of love that. It makes me play more as well, ditching the controller to build THE TALLEST LEGO TOWER EVER! I just wish video games could be part of that, and now, thanks to Nintendo Labo, they can be.

News:: The original Disgaea is getting an HD Remake, dood!

Nippon Ichi, the company behind the cult classic Disgaea, announced in a stream this morning that the original game would be getting an HD Remake for its 15th anniversary. For those unfamiliar, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness came out in 2003 on the PS2 and has been ported to a plethora of systems (with the most recent being a really subpar PC port in 2016). Which platforms this remake will be on is anyone's guess, as the company didn't have anything to show off.

They did state that the remake will be ready for a summer 2018 launch and seeing as how the last entry in the series (Disgaea 5) made its way to PS4 and Switch, I think it is safe to assume those two platforms are on the table. I wish there was more to report, but what are you gonna do?

If anything, I hope this new version features more Prinny. He needs some extra love.

News:: Nintendo Labo now available for pre-order at some U.S retailers

Yesterday saw Nintendo raise many an eyebrow with the unveiling of their "New way to play" Nintendo Labo, essentially a range of cardboard construction kits designed to house the Nintendo Switch, turning it into a range of papercraft-style toys.

For anyone who cannot wait to punch out the perforated designs and turn the hybrid console into a... erm... piano, or something, the first two kits in the range are now available to pre-order at various U.S. retail sites, ahead of their April 2018 release.

The Variety Kit, costing $70, allows you to create most of the designs seen in the trailer, such as the House, Fishing Rod and RC Car. Also available at launch is the Robot Kit, which costs a little more at $80 but, to be fair, does turn you into a mech, weakened only by missile fire and light drizzle.

Nintendo Labo launches April 20, and is available to pre-order now from Amazon and GameStop.

News:: Review: Genital Jousting

Gaming is such a strange and wonderful hobby. You can play in recreations of history’s greatest moments, explore alien planets, race in futuristic space craft and now play as a big floppy penis that is trying to insert itself in the ass of another penis. All of the achievements of humankind have been leading up to this moment.

Also, there is a story mode where you play as a dick named John who is trying to get ready for his high school reunion. This is proof enough that we are living in the best timeline.
