News:: Band of Bloggers - May Edition

Hello dear friends! It's time for a new theme for Band of Bloggers! Last month's theme of Dragons went remarkably well. We had some phenomenal blogs written as a result and I couldn't be more excited to see where Band of Bloggers goes in the future! Of course, it's still not too late to write about last month's theme as well.

As I pondered what our theme might be for May, I considered many things. I thought about Spring and how it makes me actually want to go outdoors for once (then I go outdoors and I'm allergic to everything). I thought of trees, greenery and fresh air. I envisioned going for: A Walk in the Woods.

News:: Fire Emblem: Genealogy characters headed to Fire Emblem Heroes this week

The next wave of classic Fire Emblem characters are waiting in the wings to join the roster of pocket-battler Fire Emblem Heroes, currently kicking ass on mobile devices.

The roster additions this time around are from the 1996 Super Famicom classic Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. The three new warriors are the Black Knight; Ares, the Thunder Goddess; Ishtar and the... erm... "Yearning Dancer" Lene.

Alongside these new characters comes an all-new story chapter, Hellfire, so you can test out the Black Knight's weaponry, Ishtar's command of the mighty winds and Lene's... sweet two-step? You can check out the motley crew in a new trailer below.

The new characters and chapter will go live on May 10 at 00:00 PT / 03:00 ET / 08:00 CET. Fire Emblem Heroes is available now on iOS and Android devices.

News:: Crossover fighter Blade Strangers adds Gunvolt to the roster

2018 is going to end up as one the greatest years for fighters in a very long time. It started off strong with Dragon Ball FighterZ, a game that could end up being the most popular title at this year's EVO, and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] followed shortly after and SNK has been rummaging through its back catalog to fill up the various digital storefronts almost on a weekly basis.

But perhaps the best are still yet to come. Later this month will see the release of the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, followed by DLC-heavy BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. There's also Soulcalibur VI to remember, SNK Heroines is carving its own path, and, oh yeah, we're getting a new Smash.

If you're thirsty for fighters, 2018 has you covered, but try not to get your fill before trying out Blade Strangers. This crossover fighter from Studio Saizensen was revealed last year and has been quietly building towards its Summer release. It's actually the fighter I'm most looking forward to, and if I wasn't champing at the bit before, a recent tweet from publisher NICALiS has me Googling whatever the hell a 'bit' is.

Yesterday, NICALiS confirmed Gunvolt of Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt Burst fame will be a featured fighter in the game, and he looks awesome.

News:: Bill and Ted 3 is officially official, Keaune Reeves and Alex Winter returning

At Cannes today (yea, Cannes goes lowbrow) it was finally officially confirmed that Bill and Ted 3 is happening. Cue air guitars.

The movie, officially called Bill and Ted Face the Music, has been rumored and tossed around for years now, but it's a full go now with the production company shopping international rights at Cannes, and Orion Pictures distributing in the U.S. Returning as screenwriters are the first two film's creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Dean Parisot, who have us Galaxy Quest, will direct. And that screenplay is done, by the way. This isn't some "they're working on it" kind of thing. The movie is in pre-production. We should definitely see Ted “Theodore” Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq. back on the big screen.

News:: Lessons learned, the infamous Pokemon GO Fest will return to Chicago on July 14-15

Niantic have announced that the Pokemon GO Fest will be making its second appearance in Chicago this Summer. Players can gather in The Windy City (that's Chicago, right?) to make friends, enjoy the sun and, of course, catch 'em all.

It isn't too hard to remember last year's GO Fest, held at the height of the Free-to-Play game's popularity. Unfortunately, it was an unmitigated disaster. No hyperbole. Connections slumped, bandwidth ran dry, bugs arose and stage shows were reduced to awkward fumblings as disheartened, out-of-pocket players rained scorn on the hosts. Refunds were offered, rewards were given out, as well as the ultimate gut-punch of a million dollar lawsuit. It was a miserable affair for everyone involved.

Speaking with IGN, Niantic CEO John Hanke recalled the abject misery of that day "Go Fest was a challenge for us, there’s no doubt," said Hanke. "As the person who stood up on stage and directly faced the consequences of having the technical challenges, nobody felt it more strongly than I did. Particularly with all of you in the press there to witness that with us, and all of my board members, all of our partners… It was one of the most challenging days of my professional career."

Regardless, Hanke and crew plan to right  wrongs with this year's event, which will have a brand new look and a whole new concept, bringing with them experience and lessons learned from more successful Pokemon Go events such as Pikachu Outbreak, which took place in Yokohama, Japan in August 2017. Pokemon GO Fest 2018: A Walk in the Park, will allow budding trainers to take a 1.8 mile stroll across Lincoln Park, with the route dotted with Gyms and Pokestops. This will keep everyone from gathering in a single, localised area and leaving the local bandwidth screaming. Cells on Wheels mobile units will also be used to boost signal strength along the route.

"There are going to be themed areas for the different Pokemon types, so we think we’re going to create a really fun, interesting environment for people to move through, and to really experience the full breadth of that park," continues Hanke. "It’s kind of a long, narrow park, which we’re taking advantage of, so I’m excited about what that on-the-ground experience is going to be there".

It sounds as though Niantic have isolated the major issues that caused Pokemon GO Fest to be such a major failure. Hopefully all of the lessons learned, combined with the global experience gathered in the interim, will ensure that a delightful weekend will be had by A Walk in the Park's attendees.

Pokemon GO Fest 2018 will take place in Chicago on July 14-15.

News:: Review: Batman Ninja

While the MCU has dominated theatres for the past decade, DC has been putting out a constant stream of animated movies. Most of their animated movies are adaptations of classic DC stories and if I'm being perfectly honest here, most of them range from being mediocre to outright bad. The problem usually lies in how the stories are adapted. By all accounts, it should be simple for a comic book to be turned into an animated movie, but the animation has usually been subpar, the stories have weird additions and subtractions, and they usually truncate the source material into a shadow of its former self. The fact that DC turned "All-Star Superman", one of the greatest superhero comics of all time, into what was essentially a three-part Superman: The Animated Series made-for-tv movie should be a crime against humanity.

But hark, through the heavens late last year, trailers began to surface of a DC animated movie about Batman being a ninja. Some of you may roll your eyes, but the animation looked solid, it was directed by the creator of Afro Samurai, and featured an original Elseworlds story about Batman and a group of Gotham villains being sent back in time to feudal Japan. It looked interesting, and I couldn't wait to see it.

Now that I've seen it, I can't stop gushing over it. Between Infinity War and this, this is a great week for superhero movies because my God is Batman Ninja a masterpiece of animation.

News:: Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the Game Boy Color style is just lovely

While it's easy to espouse the merit and legacy of The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, the lesser-beloved follow-up set of Oracle games by Capcom are an underrated pair. While they're not quite as memorable in terms of iconography like the Wind Fish, they manage to iterate nicely while maintaining the same exploration-based spirit of the original NES classic.

The same goes for this mockup of Breath of the Wild, presented by Nintendo Wire. It even brings us out of the initial cave and into the lovely intro screen, followed by a shrine tease that abruptly ends the video. You also get some remixed tunes to listen to -- the two minutes required of you to watch the video is well worth it!

If you'll excuse me I'll be booting up Link to the Past for a quick run this evening.

News:: Funky Kong mode activate! Tropical Freeze riding high in the UK Charts

Cowabunga, dudes! The Switch release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has jammed into the UK Charts, making an impressive second-place debut. Of course, even the awesome power of Funky Kong wasn't enough to keep Sony's mega-smash God Of War from holding a third week in the premier position.

Cumbersome Lego title Marvel Super Heroes 2 also made its way back into the big leagues, no doubt thanks to that scamp Thanos and his cinematic shenanigans. Speaking of movies, Electronic Arts Star Wars Battlefront II also pushed its way back into the Top Ten, as hype builds for the upcoming Solo movie. Props to end-of-days shooter Far Cry 5, which has held fast in the upper tier for some time now.

Elsewhere in the charts, the creative  Nintendo Labo: Toy-Con Variety Kit dropped from last week's number three spot to sit just outside the Top Ten at number thirteen. Microsoft swashbuckler Sea of Thieves also made a break for high tide, pushing up from number seventeen to number eleven.

News:: Warriors Orochi 4 bringing 170 characters to PS4 and Nintendo Switch

Japanese gaming publication Famitsu have posted new details (or any details, in fact) about Koei Tecmo's upcoming sequel Warriors Orochi 4, which was first announced back in March.

The sequel will launch in Japan in 2018, and is coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch (it has already been announced that the game will be headed West later this year). Warriors Orochi 4 will also feature the biggest roster to date, containing a staggering 170 characters. Finally, a new form of special move, known as "Divine Art Actions", is being added to the warriors' repertoire.

At least now fans have something to go on. It's also probably worth noting that, in the past, Koei have been known to add further platforms to a game when it crosses into other territories, so Xbox One or PC owners should keep their hopes up.

Warriors Orochi 4 is currently in development for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

News:: Pour one out for Miitomo, which shuts its doors after today

Miitomo, Nintendo's first smartphone app, is finally closing shop after a little over two years. The app launched with the promise of making your Mii's more interactive and it barely achieved that. While I had some fun with Miitomo, I couldn't tell you the last time I actually logged in to answer some funny daily questions. For any fans, today will be your last day to even take a glance.

As a reminder, basically everything you've done in Miitomo won't be saved. All those answers, cosmetic items, Sidekick Mii's and even Miifotos will be lost. You can back up your photos by saving them to your smartdevice, but everything else is kaput. Even the Miitomo themed Super Mario Run items will cease to be, which is a little odd.

The app will officially cease operations at 12 am PST on May 9, so anyone on the east coast does have a little extra time to tinker with the app. I doubt this will get the kind of send off that the Miiverse had, though.

News:: Review: Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Desolation of Mordor

Middle-earth: Shadow of War surprised me in myriad ways in pretty much every facet of its existence. The large-scale battles involving giant armies actually felt grand in scale, and the mechanical advancements in Talion's locomotion made the game that much more fun to play when it came to moment-to-moment action.

The narrative bits, while still mostly on the level of a QTE battle with Sauron from the first, were mostly take it or leave it affairs. Just when I thought the concept of the noble Celebrimbor from the source material becoming a greedy wraith obsessed with his own Ring of Power was the worst Monolith could do, in comes sultry Shelob.

It was a weird mix of fanservice and an attempt to create an actual tale that could credibly take place in Middle-earth, but for the most part, the second DLC abandons most of that fluff and moves right into the thick of it.

News:: Overwatch currently has a bug that gives you play of the game for murdering gondoliers

Overwatch's Rialto has been out for less than a week and people are already breaking it.

As gathered online from various players, the below gifs showcase the ability to get play of the game (read: the final photo finish-esque clip that shows the "best" play in a particular round) by attempting to murder the innocent, invincible robot gondoliers that pilot the boats of the map's canals. Yep, it's definitely a bug, as these players are shown merely shooting an NPC to get play of the game. You have to give them points of their tenacity.

More than likely this will be fixed swiftly, but it's hilarious all the same.

News:: Review: Nintendo Labo - Variety Kit

You're probably wondering why this review of Nintendo Labo - Variety Kit is so late. Well, it was going to be late from the start, since there was no review copy. So instead of getting my review up the second I completed all of the cardboard constructions and "won" the game, I decided to hold off a bit longer to learn about the shelf life of these toys.

One of the main complaints initially launched at Labo was that the cardboard would be fun to put together, but would fall by the wayside, left to clutter up the house with those tiny, useless toys your kids get on holidays, and the Wolverine action figure they played with once and then forgot about, in favor of a large cardboard box. So I gave Labo some breathing room to see if the mini-games and cardboard Toy-Cons stood up to the rapidly changing attention of a child.

My initial feelings towards Labo still stand, as just that, but after the excitement of construction wears off, your experience may vary.

News:: Monster Hunter: World ships nearly 8 million units, hits Capcom's all-time highest profitability level

Capcom have released their financial report for the fiscal year 2017, which ended March 31. The report shows that, since releasing in January, Monster Hunter: World has shipped 7.9 million copies worldwide.

This amazing figure reresents the "highest level of profitability" in Capcom's history, according to the legendary developer/publisher. "Of particular note," continues the report. "is that the worldwide expansion of the user base due to the game’s tremendous success overseas, in addition to its established domestic popularity, has marked the start of a new era for the brand."

Roughly translated: The suits now consider Monster Hunter a big fucking deal. The report goes on to refer to Monster Hunter: World as the company's "flagship title". This, in the same era that saw the launch of new Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom games.

Elsewhere in the report, Capcom celebrate the success of creepy backwoods shocker Resident Evil 7, which shipped well over five million units. the company also continue to push their dreams of making their presence felt in esports, specifically referring to 2018 as "Esports Year One".

After the troublesome launch of Street Fighter V, and the sad fate of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, there's probably a lot of executives heaving a sigh of relief that they took a relatively niche brand and blew it up worldwide. Kudos to you, Monster Hunter, kudos.

News:: Moss is getting a physical release after all

Every now and then I'm reminded of my time with Moss and the little platforming adventure game cheers me right up. It's had a few months on PlayStation Network to build up word of mouth and really make a name for itself. Now, it's taking that inevitable next step: Moss is getting a physical edition.

At $30, the retail PlayStation 4 version will cost the same as the digital one -- which is good to hear, because there aren't any notable extras. This is the game on a disc in a box. No more, no less.

As for Moss itself, I still think it's an easy recommendation to make so long as you have PlayStation VR. It's a highly polished, adorable, well-designed-for-VR game that's great for kids and adults alike.

News:: Review: HearthStone: The Witchwood

Hearthstone is one of the oldest digital collectible card games (CCGs) around at this point, and certainly one of the most popular. Blizzard's talent for sanding the corners off of dense, crunchy strategy games makes HearthStone a great entry point for anyone new to CCGs. The art, voice lines, and humorous descriptions on the cards help add some levity to a genre that often takes itself way too seriously.

Over the last two years HearthStone has gone through significant changes, removing older card sets from standard play and introducing the "Wild" format where veterans can use all their cards. The developers have also said they don't intend to create any more Adventure expansions, premium add-ons which allowed everyone playing to unlock the same cards. Instead, there will now be three themed card expansions every year which include some Player Versus Environment (PvE) content as a bonus.

The PvE content released so far under this new system has been exceptional, and making it free for all players is a nice olive branch for those who miss the Adventures. But it doesn't wash away the suspicion I get that the game has become much more predatory towards players' wallets, and feels more like a "pay-to-win" CCG than it did in the past. I really don't like the direction the game seems to be taking, but it's so much fun I keep playing anyway. I guess that makes me part of the problem.

News:: Nintendo Switch won’t have a Virtual Console

The announcement of an online service for the Nintendo Switch yesterday raised more questions than answers, it seems. People have been waiting for the Switch Online service ever since the release of the popular console, and with it comes cloud-based backup saves. The news that the subscription fee ($4 per month, $8 for three months or $20 for a year) would also give subscribers access to 20 NES games spurred discussion of whether Virtual Console would be making a return to the Switch. Sadly, it doesn't look like that's the case, but it doesn't mean retro and classic games won't be available on the Nintendo Switch.

News:: Comcast might snag 21st Century Fox from Disney

Breaking news: a giant, evil corporation may outbid another giant, evil corporation to buy a giant, evil corporation. According to Reuters, Comcast is preparing to make a $60 billion all-cash bid for 21st Century Fox, after Disney made an offer of $52 billion for Fox back in December. Comcast had flirted with the idea and that exact figure before.

According to the report, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts wants to go through with the bid—but only if the pending $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner by AT&T ultimately goes through. The fate of the deal, which has been scrutinized over anti-trust concerns, will be decided in June by U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon. Fox previously rejected Comcast's $60 billion bid back in November due to similar regulatory concerns.

It's all corporate politics and shuffling, but despite fears of a monopoly, people at the fandom level just want to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties go to Disney's Marvel Studios, or the distribution rights of the original Star Wars film to go to Disney for a potential full box set—monopoly fears be damned.

News:: 'World of Warcraft' cyberattacker sentenced to year in prison

One World of Warcraft player is paying the price for taking a virtual rivalry too far. A US federal court has sentenced Romanian man Calin Mateias to spend a year in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to launching a distributed denial of service attack against WoW's servers in response to being "angered" by one player. The 2010 traffic flood knocked thousands of players offline and cost Blizzard $30,000 (which Mateias repaid in April) in recovery expenses.

News:: Review: Dragon's Crown Pro

From the dawn of pop culture, fantasy worlds have always been a go-to for adventure. Whether the works of Tolkien, Sword and Sorcery movies, the Fighting Fantasy game-books, or good old-fashioned D&D, it seems every generation has an audience eager for tales of evil sorcerers, enchanted pixies, stout dwarven fighters and beautiful warrior maidens.

Dragon's Crown, which launched for PS3 and PS Vita back in 2013, was a love letter to all of the above, while simultaneously being a celebration of classic gaming itself. Dragon's Crown blends veteran elements of fantasy RPGs with retro arcade action, all daubed in nostalgic artwork instantly recalling metal albums and tabletop gaming manuals of yore.

For a new generation of players, Atlus have polished up Vanillaware's divisive title for release on the PS4. The game has received a visual and aural upgrade to excite veteran fans whilst hoping to hook a whole new generation of adventurers. Grab your sword and polish your helmet, as we return to Hydeland once more, in search of the Dragon's Crown.

News:: You can play as Marvel's Thanos in Fortnite right now

So, this is actually happening.

We reported yesterday on Fortnite's mashup with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and now the event is actually live. If you log into Fortnite you'll find an option for the "Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup" mode. Click it, and you'll enter the typical 1vs100 setup with one catch -- one lucky person can morph into Thanos. "All" you need to do is grab every Infinity Stone then touch the gauntlet and bam, you turn into a boss character.

While this is a very cool gimmick, I can really see the potential in an asymmetrical PVE mode in Fortnite at some point. If the team at Epic can develop some sort of big bad in the narrative (and they can, based on their wonderful design work), seeing a huge battle play out with all players involved would be great -- like an Evolve, but with a larger playerbase.

News:: Part of Resident Evil 2 has been recreated in Far Cry 5, and it's great

People are doing some amazing things with the Far Cry 5 map editor. In addition to the DLC billing itself as a Rambo, zombie, and sci-fi simulator, folks have built anything and everything, including the Lost island.

Well, Far Cry 5 user ZergRex managed to lovingly recreate the intro to Resident Evil 2, calling me the map Raccoon City. It's just the first part of the game, from the explosive start all the way to the Raccoon City Police Department, but it's done very well and uses the zombie-like NPCs infected with Bliss.

Seeing Kendo's gun shop again made me want to just go through Resident Evil 2 all over again, but I could just wait until the planned remake is done!

News:: Wow, Nintendo confirms that the Virtual Console isn't coming to Switch

Nintendo's online system was revealed last night, and it sounds pretty great. In addition to just costing $20 a year and coming with a small buffet of NES games (an additive system), you can opt for a family plan that will run you less than $5 a year. Nice! Except, apparently, this new limited retro plan is the only way you're going to be playing retro games on the system. Yep, no GameCube virtual console is planned as has been rumored since the Wii -- no Virtual Console at all is planned, actually.

Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo noted:

"There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems. There are a variety of ways in which classic games from Nintendo and other publishers are made available on Nintendo Switch, such as through Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo eShop or as packaged collections. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online will provide a fun new way to experience classic NES games that will be different from the Virtual Console service, thanks to enhancements such as added online play, voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app and the various play modes of Nintendo Switch."

So that's pretty clear. The only way right now that we're getting Virtual Console games is by way of compilations and such...like the Seiken Densetsu pack, which was never localized, and....yeah. Instead of going for the dream, like giving us a real unified account system and access to all of the VC games we paid for in the past on the go, we're getting the possibility of repackaged compilations at a premium. Not a great trade.

One interesting angle that not a lot of people have looked at: where does this put the 3DS? It currently runs the VC model, but if Nintendo is saying VC isn't the future, could they eventually bring the subscription service to another platform? Likely not, if the 3DS' destiny is to rot.

News:: Cloud saves are coming to Nintendo Switch this September

Nintendo has finally revealed more details about its long-awaited Switch Online service. In addition to giving you access to NES games adapted for the console, the service will also come with cloud-based backup -- a much-requested feature that will give you access to saves in case you lose or break your device, or in case you buy a new Switch. The subscription service will set you back $4 per month, $8 for three months or $20 for a year and will launch with 20 NES titles you can play either online or offline.

News:: The Linksys router that prioritizes Xbox One gaming is now available

That router Linksys showed off at CES this year -- yes, the one that prioritizes gaming traffic from Xbox consoles -- is now available for purchase in the US. The WRT32XB is the first router designed to automatically detect any Xbox One, including the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X, and put it above any other gadget connected to its network. While it was obviously created for serious Xbox gamers, a spokesperson told us Linksys will roll out a software update this summer that will allow the router to prioritize all gaming traffic regardless of the device, whether it's a console, a PC or even a smartphone.
