News::It took seven hours, but Spelunky has a new world record

A Plasma Cannon in 1-1. A jetpack in 1-2. This is the start of a remarkably fortunate Spelunky run.

It's a run that will, at least for the foreseeable future, remain at the top of the leaderboards. Bananasaurus Rex, known as being the first person to complete a solo eggplant run, has set the new world record score: $3,105,850.

This went down live on Twitch earlier today and when I tuned in at around the six-hour mark, he was only just destroying the last remaining bits of the City of Gold. If there's one word I'd use to describe this playthrough, it's thorough. The sheer skill of Rex shines through in his calm, collected style of play despite all of the obstacles and pressure he faced. Well done!

News::Titanfall Preview by The Black Panel

The Black Panel writes: Two years after his acrimonious split from Activision, Vince Zampella is preparing to unleash his latest creation. The Call of Duty mastermind has left behind the familiar battlefields of the Modern Warfare series in order to roll the dice on a different kind of shooter. A multiplayer only experience, Titanfall takes place on a war ravaged world, a world dominated by hulking war mechs and their impossibly spry pilots, a world in which firepower is the most valuable currency. After delving into Respawn Entertainments beta test, The Black Panel came together to discuss 2014s most anticipated release.

News::Kiefer Sutherland says he worked on new Mortal Kombat

This is one of those stories that you come into with a confused look on your face and leave a moment later with that exact same puzzled expression. Speaking to IGN about voicing Snake in Metal Gear Solid V -- a role he's been working on for "over a year" -- actor Kiefer Sutherland said "I did Mortal Kombat, and that's such a huge game, but it's so not like [MGSV]."

The big news here is obviously the existence of a new Mortal Kombat, sure -- after the last one, we're hungry for another installment -- but I can't figure out who Sutherland would even play or why he'd be a top pick for the gig. Is getting someone like him not overkill? (No disrespect, MK.)

News::Hardline 009: The end of Irrational, Twitch Plays Pokemon

Technical issues be damned! Hardline is back and this week I spoke with Hamza Aziz, Steven Hansen, and Dale North about the closure of Irrational Games and forming of co-founder Ken Levine's new, significantly smaller studio; the Doom beta; Harmonix's musical first-person shooter Chroma ; the Twitch Plays Pokémon phenomenon; and The Order: 1886 .

And then we started pitching game ideas to one another, including a Metroidvania bowling game and a stealth dancing title. It got real stupid, real fast.

News::PlanetSide 2 just got a big makeover

PlanetSide 2 is looking a little different today. Here's what's new. The Amerish revamp sees a number of performance optimizations that makes the overall object count and polygons per object more optimized. There's new base layouts too, and facility satellite outposts have been converted into stand-alone outposts.

The Lattice System has been implemented, which will optimize map flow and repositions outposts. Lastly, nine new outposts have been added, and original outposts have been redesigned to reduce spawn camping and increase room for vehicle battles.

PlayStation 4 users can expect this same content once the shooter is released on Sony's console as well.

News::Here are the games in the PAX East Indie Showcase 2014

PAX East 2014 is only 49 days away, and as has been the recent trend, it will feature an increased focus on independent games. Featured in this year's PAX East Indie Showcase are six titles, all of which are playable on phones. The games that made the cut are:

The most interesting of the bunch looks to be Framed (pictured above), which features comic book panel shifting to rewrite stories. Also particularly noteworthy is Duet, which appears to have a little in common with Pivvot , but also promises a peculiar narrative in addition to the twitch avoidance gameplay. Also, this is the second time today that Wayward Souls has shown up; just earlier it was announced as part of the Indie MEGABOOTH for GDC.

News::GaymerX2 Kickstarter met its initial goal in only 2 days

GaymerX2, the world's only gaming convention focused on LGBTQ communities, launched a Kickstarter to fund their July 11-13 event two days ago. They were looking for $10,000, but managed to beat that (it's at $12,683) in just two days.

Last year, over 2,300 gamers attended GaymerX, so they're coming back with an even stronger second year. Guests this year include BioWare lead writer David Gaider, Gordon Bellamy, John Scalzi, Mattie Brice, and many more. Their special guest is WWE Superstar Darren Young. Superstar game music composer/arranger (and dear friend) virt will be playing in the Saturday night concert.

And while I'm not a guest in any way, yours truly is also planning to attend.

Though the goal has been met, there are still plenty of stretch goals to conquer. For example, $20,000 will add a cosplay party!

News::Download GameMaker Studio Standard Edition for free

Normally, the Standard Edition for GameMaker Studio costs $49.99 but for a limited time, it's available for free. After downloading, just register an email address and you'll be sent a key.

Also through March 2, 2014, the upgrade to GameMaker Professional Edition is $35, down from the usual going rate of $99.99 -- "simply enter your Standard license key when checking out," according to YoYoGames. Of course, it's the modules that start to add up, but this free version is still one of those offers where there's really no reason not to grab it while you can.

When I think of GameMaker success stories, I think of Derek Yu (Spelunky), Tom Francis (Gunpoint), and Jonatan Söderström (Hotline Miami) -- these three rocked it. In time, you can too.

News::Trainfinity transforms tablets to train tracks

Watch this. It's a teaser for Trainfinity , a game developed in 48 hours during the Nordic Game Jam last week. A local cooperative multiplayer game, tracks run in three lanes from one player's tablet to the next while trains begin to run on the tracks in both directions at increasing frequency. Players have to communicate with each other to prevent collisions and derailments along the line.

The design is simple enough that anybody who can operate a tablet should understand it, a major plus for a party game. Hell, you could probably sell this as a team-building exercise in how it rewards effective communication with your neighbors. I'm a big fan of this idea and hope it sees further development.

ESOHut Writes: "I am one of a very lucky few who has beta access to ESO. Now with the gloating out of the way, I can carry on with my report. Lets begin at the beginning. After the game has started, you feel the overwhelming sensation you get from an Elder Scrolls game. The character creation screen feels like a proper TES game, only better. The graphics, the navigation, the different options to mod you character are fantastic. I love creating characters in any game and take my time doing so, but I found I was rushing the whole thing just so I could get the game started. So I havent had a proper look around all the different options on there, and there is loads."

MKGaming - "Back in the late 80s a ninja hit arcades, his name was Hiryu and the game was Strider. Players had to battle across a series of maps chopping down enemies and defeating bosses along the way. Fast forward to 2014 and Strider is back, this time developed by Double Helix, who recently developed the Killer Instinct reboot. Its hard to tell whether or not the new Strider is considered a reboot but for arguments sake, the story in the 2014 version mirrors the 1989 version."

News::To Evolve or not to Evolve?

IM PLAYIN takes a look at Evolve, the up and coming FPS / Survival game from Turtle Neck and 2K Games. "When I made the change from 360 to Playstation, there was one title I thought I really would hate not to see again, and that was Left 4 Dead. I had spent hours, if not consecutive days, on the game. With a great deal of that time being played as a part of the now IM PLAYIN crew. Yes, I know if they had brought out another one it would be available on PC or possibly the previous gen, however, not having a good enough spec rig, I didnt want to even go down that route. And now being a next gen sucker, I would find it difficult to warrant buying it for my previous console. So I made the change accepting that. Now I couldnt be happier with the recent news of Evolve, and boy does it look sweet, both in game play and in the graphics department."
