News:: Anthony Marzano's Top 10 Films of 2017

[Ed. Note: We do awards a bit different at Flixist. Most of our writers do not get early screenings or award screeners of movies, which means it isn't easy to see some of the films that only get limited releases in December for many of us. As such we wait a few weeks into January so that we can see everything before we choose our favorites, and then vote in February for the site's awards.]

2017, what a year for films. While it started out looking like we were just going to get endless sequels and creativity devoid superhero movies, all in all, it was a great year for movies, so long as you look past Disney continuing its world domination bid that is. Thanks to the fact that I started writing for Flixist this year I actually kept up with modern releases instead of waiting for them to show up on one of the streaming services. I did miss a few that I wanted to see like The Shape of Water, The Florida Project, and The Disaster Artist but the nice thing about films is that they are little capsules of the time that they were made that we can go back to at any time. So without further adieu, here are my picks for top ten films of 2017.

News:: Amanita Design's silly new adventure Chuchel is out in March

Between Samorost, Machinarium, and Botanicula, Amanita Design knows a thing or two about crafting odd adventure games that are creative, smile-inducing, and easy on the eyes. The studio's latest, Chuchel, looks like a particularly goofy good time. It's due out March 7, 2018 on PC.

Described as a comedy adventure game, Chuchel sees the titular hairball hero and his rival Kekel "facing numerous puzzles and challenges on their quest to retrieve the precious cherry." This trailer is more tone-setting than anything, but the screenshots below show what the game's going for.

Amanita says the iOS and Android versions "need some extra development time." Q2 2018's the goal.

News:: Notmycar is some sort of blend of battle royale and demolition derby

The latest take on the battle royale genre also seems like the most overtly conspicuous. The upcoming Notmycar confines players to the driver's seat and has them hunting down the other vehicles. Equal parts PUBG and Twisted Metal seems like an apt comparison.

However, Notmycar has only been revealed so far as the name and the concept. It's survival-based and full of explosions, but that's all we really know. We haven't yet learned any specifics like how many players will be in a match, what kind of "gear" systems there are (or if they even exist), or how the game will funnel players toward one another.

Heck, we don't even know what the title means. Is it like "Whose car is that? Not MY car!" Or is it like "Oh no, Not my car! Anything but my car!" These are pressing questions that remain unanswered.

We'll get some sort of information tomorrow, though. Notmycar's gameplay debut will take place tomorrow at 6pm Pacific on Dan "Greenskull" Hamill's Mixer channel. In the meantime, anyone who's interested can sign up for the pre-alpha on the game's site.

News:: Nintendo Labo hands-on: Cardboard has never been this fun

Leave it up to Nintendo to get us excited over cardboard. Labo, its DIY Switch-powered cardboard accessory line, seemed like the purist encapsulation of Nintendo's philosophy: "Play" is far more important than having the best graphics. At first glance, Labo seems like a unique mixture of digital and analog gaming that kids will likely love. And based on my brief time with a few Labo kits today, it's something adults will likely have a blast with as well.

News:: Part Two of Monster Hunter: World's behind-the-scenes takes a look at game design

While I probably won't continue to post all of Capcom's behind-the-scenes videos for Monster Hunter: World, this latest entry in the series goes over a lot of concepts that aspiring game developers might kind interesting. Focusing on the design process for the wildly popular hunting simulator, this video even takes a look at how sound design is crucial in creating a believable and inviting environment.

Now I just have to wait for that PC version...I need a hug.

News:: ‘Diablo’ creator’s next game is a 2D dungeon crawler

If you lost hours and hours delving beneath Tristram in the original Diablo, you have David Brevik to thank, who created and programmed the classic action RPG. The veteran developer went on to co-found and head the studio that became Blizzard North, which made the even-more-successful Diablo II. After years consulting and leading studio Gazillion Entertainment, Brevik is returning to dungeons and lurking horrors in his next game It Lurks Below, which he created entirely himself and will launch later this year.

News:: Plants vs. Zombies creator George Fan on past success, future risks, and beers with Edmund McMillen

George Fan is pretty modest for someone who created Insaniquarium and Plants vs. Zombies, two of the most memorable and replayable games ever released. His career has spanned almost two decades, from freaky Flash games to creating a major franchise in Zombies, which is endlessly iterated upon by Electronic Arts.

In speaking to him about his upcoming release, Octogeddon, he fondly recalled his humble origins on a gaming portal that he refers to as an "online version of Chuck E. Cheese," and described himself as a "gnomish tinkerer." I could immediately tell that this is someone who never wants to stop making things.

News:: Colony builder Surviving Mars is March-bound on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Total Recall has taught me many things, chief among them that attempts to colonize Mars are bound to go real bad at some point. It can't be helped. But in the case of Haemimont Games' upcoming building management sim Surviving Mars, we'll at least have the chance to work out the kinks ourselves.

It's all set for a March 15, 2018 launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One courtesy of Paradox. PC players can expect modding tools, and PS4 Pro and Xbox One X owners are getting 4K support.

I'm totally naming my colony "Last Resort." Let's see if they can last more than a week.

News:: Latest ARMS update brings Gallery feature, Tournament Mode, and more

Nintendo isn't quite as done updating ARMS as we might've thought.

A fresh update dropped last night bringing a few new goodies, including a fighting-game-staple gallery full of illustrations to unlock, a few extras for Party Crash, and a special Tournament Mode that unlocks all Arms so you can easily get situated to run your own tourney. There's also a few more fixes.

Version 5.1

  • Added new “Gallery” feature. Unlock amazing illustrations using in-game currency, or by fulfilling certain conditions.
  • Added new badges.
    • Added badges earned when certain pairs of fighters rack up battles together.
    • Added badges earned by repeatedly using each ARM.
    • And so many more!
  • New additions to Party Crash.
    • ARMS Labs have manufactured the ultimate version of Hedlok. It will appear only in Party Crash.
    • ARMS Labs have thought up some new Bonus Periods. Look out for them!
    • If a featured fighter is losing by more than 1000 points in the current lobby, the bonus for using them will increase from 1.5x to 2x. Time for some comebacks!
  • Added “Tournament Mode.”
    • A mode made for tournaments with all ARMS unlocked.
    • When in Tournament Mode you will be unable to play other modes such as Grand Prix or Ranked Match, and you won’t receive badges or in-game currency. Records will also not be recorded.
    • You can switch between Normal Mode and Tournament Mode on the Top Menu by holding in the R Stick and pressing L and R.
  • Fixed an issue where Dr. Coyle’s extra ARMS would not fire correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the Ramram would stop moving in mid-air.
  • Fixed an issue in Skillshot, where the Tribolt would fail to return after punching.

All in all, a pleasant little surprise.

News:: The MOBA bubble just popped a bit, but here are a few that are still left or dominating

Battle royales are the next big thing. For a minute there it was MMOs (around the time when World of Warcraft was hosting its second expansion) and then it was MOBAs. The next-big-thing phenomenon I'm referring to isn't necessarily indicative of success or failure of any given project, just a money-making genre that developers choose to flock to -- even if their long-term goals aren't fully planned out.

Two victims of that rush were definitely Motiga's Gigantic and Epic's Paragon, both of which are shutting down very soon. Before that NCSoft's Master X Master (one of my personal favorites in recent years) shut down after just five months.

Several may have died, but the genre is far from "dead." Here are a few that are still going strong in the order of the year they were released.

News:: Rainbow Six Siege's new co-op mode is infested with some sort of alien zombies

Ubisoft's in the middle of a long tease about a new mode to Rainbow Six Siege called "Outbreak." As we noted last week, it's a PvE limited-time event where players try to fend off some sort of infestation.

While still playing coy, Ubisoft has revealed a little more about Outbreak. The trailer that's embedded above shows a mysterious capsule that crash-landed in the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. (That state is ripe for this kind of thing.) According to a description from Ubisoft, the capsule contained the Apex parasite. The alien organism is now loose and is infecting people and turning them into monster zombie things.

A few other details about Outbreak surfaced too. It'll feature two different difficulties -- Normal and Pandemic. Also, it has three unique maps that were designed for cooperative play. Ubisoft says this means these areas are more open than Siege's competitive maps.

For the full rundown of the new mode, we have to wait until the Six Invitation on February 13. That's when we should learn all there is to know about Outbreak. Then, on March 6, all that's left is to contain the infestation. Can't be that tough, right?

News:: This Kingdom Come: Deliverance trailer should get you properly amped up

There's a reason all the best leaders give incredibly motivating speeches right before plunging into the thick of battle (or at least this is what movies have led me to believe). It's gonna get all those warrior guys completely keyed up to fight. And if it's raining during the speech? Oh man, the other side might as well just retire and save themselves the trouble.

Here's a Kingdom Come: Deliverance trailer that should have the same effect on you. It hits the trifecta of revenge-minded monologue, sweeping environmental war shots, and majestic music. It's like a stat buff. You're more confident for having watched it.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an RPG so there's going to be a lot of talking and relationship-building (this script is said to be twice as long as the entirety of Lord of the Rings). But when you're not talking, you'll be fighting. And this trailer makes you want to fight.

News:: Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia launches April 19

If you've somehow had your fill of Lizardmen and Dark Elves, Creative Assembly's next Total War game is more grounded -- and it's not far off. Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, which revolves around the Anglo-Saxons, Gaelic clans, Welsh tribes, and Viking settlers in 878 AD, releases April 19 on PC.

It's a more focused game that hones in on a "critical moment in history" (hence the new "Total War Saga" titling), and that means a reduced price compared to the full-fledged installments. Thrones of Britannia will run $40. Pre-ordering will knock 10 percent off that price and Creative Assembly has pledged to donate 25 percent of its profits from pre-sales to the charity War Child UK.

As shown in this developer interview, the stylized 2D intro movies for the factions look great.

The studio is also planning a physical limited edition and has shared the system specs.

News:: Crypt of the NecroDancer hops onto Switch in Japan & America today

The official Crypt of the NecroDancer twitter has announced that the psychedelic, beat-heavy dungeon crawler is two-stepping onto Nintendo Switch . The game goes live in the U.S. and Japan today, with Europe and Australia to follow soon thereafter.

The rhythm-action title, developed and published by indie outfit Brace Yourself, first strutted its stuff on PC back in 2015, and has seen releases on multiple formats since. The game features a young adventurer, Cadence, who must journey deep into a series of dungeons to reclaim her heart, stolen by the titular NecroDancer.

All of Cadence's movement and attacks must sync with the game's soundtrack, composed by the acclaimed Danny Baranowsky. Although it can feel somewhat frustrating at first, with a little practice the game becomes an addictive and somewhat transient experience, aided by its excellent score and trippy colour palette. The Switch edition of the game will include an exclusive co-op mode and an extra player character.

News:: Nintendo Labo gadgets can be remixed with 'Toy-Con Garage'

Nintendo stunned the gaming world last month when it unveiled Labo, a system that uses the Switch and some cardboard to make lovably homely little minigames. Reception among the Engadget staff was...mixed. But Nintendo might have nullified a growing concern about the system's longevity with its latest announcement. At a hands-on press event earlier today, the company introduced the Toy-Con Garage, a feature in the Labo's base software that lets users essentially create their own Switch-empowered cardboard toys.

News:: Final Fantasy XV version 1.21 and PC benchmark tool now available

The latest patch for Square Enix's massive Final Fantasy XV is available and the biggest feature it adds is having Aranea as a training partner at camp. For those unfamiliar, she joins the party in chapter seven while Gladiolus is gone and can randomly appear after to help fight daemons. Her role is kind of neat, reversing the standard trope of a villain being simply sinister with no other character traits.

The new patch also includes the ability to jump straight to day or night at a campsite and some new tutorials you can practice. Ignis' costume from his specific DLC has also been fixed so that his hair isn't screwed up. That Assassin's Creed crossover will also be removed with this patch. You can read the full patch notes below.

For people without the console versions and eagerly looking forward to the Windows Edition, Square Enix has released a benchmark tool that will let you know if your PC is up to snuff. There is a specific one for different regions, so you'll need to grab the corresponding one for your language of choice. Considering the recommended processor for 1080p/60 FPS is my five year old Core i7 3770K, I'm pretty sure most people will be able to play this game without an issue.

News:: My god, someone bought a Counter-Strike skin for $60,000

I remember the first time I realized people would pay thousands of dollars for a digital item. I was randomly perusing some news and a report on EVE Online popped up, detailing the various lengths the community would go to for vanity items. That was around the same time as when the hat/skin/trading card economies were taking off on Steam.

This one tops all of that though. According to Polygon, one special skin for a sniper rifle called "Dragon Lore" went for a whopping $61,052.63. This one is "signed" by someone from the prolific eSports team Cloud9, and the sale went down directly after the signing player Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham won MVP at the eLeague Major in Boston.

Why did the skin go for so much? well, "Cobblestone Packages" are restricted to ELeague viewers for one, and this one was a super rare "factory new" (read: it looks pristine in-game) item with a sticker.

To many others, it looks like a golden skin you'd pay 50 cents for in Call of Duty or would have unlocked for free in a shooter made before 2010. Video games!

News:: Arowana Mall map returns to Splatoon 2 tonight

The Arowana Mall map, popularised in the original Splatoon, is reopening for business back in the Nintendo Switch's arena-shooter sequel, Splatoon 2, this evening.

Arowana depicts an empty shopping district, ready for redecoration by teams of trigger-happy squid-kids. The news of its return has been met with raised eyebrows by some fans, who tremble and speak in hushed tones of its chokepoints and bottlenecks, perfect for camp-happy snipers and sprinkler setups.

I never played the original game, so this is news to me, but maybe some of you versed in old Splatoon maps will remember the nightmares that these players are referring to. Regardless, new (old) content is always welcome, and you can expect Arowana Mall to open its doors around 18:00 PT tonight, with Europe and Japan to follow early tomorrow.

News:: CyberConnect2, the house that brought you tons of Naruto and .hack games, has a massive multi-point plan for 2018

CyberConnect 2 isn't screwing around in 2018. Not only has the company's CEO published a 12-minute video detailing their plans for the year, but they've also written a giant missive, filled with info and half-info on what they're doing.

Basically their plan is four-fold, and involves developing more games, publishing, animation jobs, and comics/novels with original stories. Three of their original game ideas are based on the philosophy of "small-scope/short-period development, short playtime, and low-price." They''re also hyping up their in-house developer jam initiative, and their animation studio A5, as well as "mass recruitment" for their company, including calls for their Montreal Studio.

A new Tail Concerto universe (Little Tail Bronx) title was announced, as well as the "schoolgirl steampunk vengeance" Tokyo Ogre Gate, and Cecile, a "gothic lolita witch vengeance" project. Right now all we have is design documents, but all of them look interesting.

I mean, damn! They're going all-out. I'm not sure how wide of an appeal CyberConnect2 will have in the west, but I already have one eye open watching them at all times.

News:: New Dragon's Crown Pro trailer highlights co-op action

Atlus have released a new trailer for the upcoming re-release of Vanillaware's RPG-brawler, Dragon's Crown Pro, which coming to PS4 this Spring.

The game will feature multiplayer co-op both locally and online. Players will choose their favourite hero and then lay out clever strategies in order to optimise the synergy between the chosen characters and their various abilities... or everyone will stand next to the boss, mashing attack buttons, whichever comes first.

The trailer also features a glimpse at the amusing campfire cookery game, whereby your culinary skills will reward you and your team-mates with buffs for the next battle. Dragon's Crown Pro will feature 4K visuals, a fully-orchestrated score, and cross-play support for the PS3 and PS Vita releases.

News:: Nintendo might have more up their sleeve than just Labo

Nintendo's Labo is coming whether you like it or not, and people are pretty damn excited for this cardboard. Naturally, there's probably going to be more on the way, or at least more stuff that could never see the light of day, like many of Nintendo's pet projects.

It's a blink and you'll miss it moment, but Takashi Mochizuki of the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Nintendo is working on "new peripheral hardware devices for the Switch." The comment was provided "without elaboration," but could either involved more Labo products beyond the initial line, or more concepts in general.

Whatever these mystery items might be, the future of the Switch is bright. Nintendo just eclipsed the lifetime sales of the Wii U in under a year. Way under a year, actually.

News:: SNES Classic sales continue to climb, now surpassing 4 million units

As part of Nintendo's quarterly earnings report, The Big N have trumpeted that the SNES Classic continues to bring in the bucks, with the tiny console now shifting over four million units.

The SNES Classic launched in 2017, with two controllers and pre-loaded with 20 great games and also Star Fox 2 (I kid). The retro device has been a smash success worldwide, no doubt due to fact that people have generally been able to find the dang thing. The previously-released NES Classic was a notoriously difficult device to attain, leaving many potential customers frustrated. Plans are to manufacture a new run of the latter console, which should see store shelves this Summer.

By October 2017, the SNES Classic had sold two million units, meaning a further two million shipped just over the Holiday season. I guess it was sitting under many folks' Christmas trees. It's testament not only to the draw of nostalgia, but also to the incredible range of games that was released on the SNES in the early '90s, arguably one of the greatest catalogues in gaming history.

News:: Dragon Ball FighterZ is the fastest selling Dragon Ball title ever

Bandai Namco have released a statement proudly announcing that Dragon Ball FighterZ, which launched last week, is already the fastest-selling Dragon Ball video game of all time.

The team-based scrapper, developed by anime fighting vets Arc System Works, released to worldwide plaudits. The game has already shipped -- and digitally sold -- over two million total units. While I won't ruffle feathers by making comparisons for perspective, that's a helluva lot of copies of an anime fighter, and in less than a week.

More shocking, DBFZ hasn't even been released in Japan and Asia yet. Launching today, it's sure to add many more coffers to the Bandai Namco bank vault. It should also be noted that, like Tekken 7 before it, DBFZ is one of the few fighting game titles to see availability on three major platforms, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The figures thus far are well deserved. Dragon Ball FighterZ is an excellent title. When I first got my hands on it at last Summer's VS Fighting tournament, I was convinced it would be a winner. Now the sales -- the easy part -- is sorted. Keeping the community alive and vested going forward? that's the real battle.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released October 26th. That gives you just under nine months to round up a posse for Rockstar Games' next adventure in the Dead West. News:: Bungie lays out its roadmap for Destiny 2, much of which is Destiny 1 features

Bungie has some catching up to do with Destiny 2. Over time it was clear that they weren't up to the task of supporting it in the short term, so now they're aiming for a schedule that's a little more involved -- say, to the end of 2018.

In a bizarre turn of events many elements that came standard with Destiny 1 years ago, or can be patched into major AAA games in a matter of days with hotfixes, are now "stretch goals" for Destiny 2. The entire roadmap through May has been offered up, which includes Nightfall scoring, party member map screen indicators, unique Nightfall rewards, 6v6 PVP, Heroic Strike modifiers, and a few other changes you can peruse in the gallery below.

As someone with three max level characters (one of each class 335) I'm flabbergasted at how slow this rollout is. Eater of Worlds' Prestige mode isn't coming until May -- a stark contrast to every other Prestige rollout in both Destiny 1 and 2 that averaged around two weeks from the release of the original raid. Even something as simple as a "multi-emote" system is months away.

Final Fantasy XIV, a massive MMO, just dropped the normal and hard mode versions of the raid in the same day this week, and will have another major update under its belt (4.3) before Destiny 2 delivers the May portion of their roadmap. Bungie is a team of literally hundreds of developers -- how are they implementing basic features slower than smaller outfits like Warframe's Digital Extremes?

It's great that Destiny 2 doesn't have a subscription fee (although you could argue that since you need to get the expansions to stay relevant, there kind of is a nominal one), but if people stop playing it and get invested in another more frequently supported game, those players aren't coming back.
