News::Kickstarter-funded Yogventures Cancelled, Shows Why Gamers Should Be Careful With Kickstarters

DSOGaming writes: "Kickstarters have been popping up like mushrooms lately, giving gamers the choice to back up a project that at least looks and sounds interesting. However and as weve already claimed gamers should be aware that some projects may never see the light of day. Yes, some may sound cool, others may sound original, and others may be innovative for their times. The thing is, there is no guarantee that the developers will meet their goals."

News::Divinity: Original Sin Review | OnlySP

OnlySP: Are you sick of games holding your hand as they walk you through a completely linear experience? Are you tired of being told how to jump or move the camera around despite there only being a few buttons on a controller? Are you looking for a game more akin to the old Infinity Engine games like Baldurs Gate and Planescape: Torment that drop you into a world and tell you to explore? Well have I got a game for you. Divinity: Original Sin from Larian Studios is the next installment in the Divinity series of CRPGs and it doesnt insult the players intelligence by forcing them through lengthy tutorials or by giving them a quest objective marker. You enter Original Sins fantasy world with nothing but your wits, your weapons, and the clothes on your back the rest is up to you. If this sounds intriguing to you, then you should be excited, because aside from a few rough edges, Divinity: Original Sin delivers a really refreshing, old-school experience.

Zac Elawar of Capsule Computers writes: "Crimsonland is a HD remaster of the original that began life as a student project, and kicked indie developers 10Tons Ltd into gear back in 2003. After more than a decade, Crimsonland is resurrected on Steam, but also makes its début on the PlayStation 4, both with updated graphics, new assets, design tweaks and added content. Its also a cross-buy title on PlayStation platforms, with the PS Vita version hitting PSN soon."

News::Early Access Belongs on PC, Not Consoles

"Early Access" has become a buzz phrase this week in gaming. Steam already offers this program, allowing developers to release early, work-in-progress versions of their games on their store. This may spread to consoles in the near future, as Sony is considering an early access program and indie developers have asked Microsoft to follow suit as well. Is Early Access right for the console environment? Gamnesia author Ben Lamoreux delves into the subject inside.

News::Sony's gamescom press conference set for August 12

Sony's gamescom press conference will take place on Tuesday, August 12 at 7:00 p.m., says Videogamer.

There's no indication of what to expect at their media event, but my experience is that they always bring plenty of announcements for the show. Last year, a pile of indie games, a Vita price drop, a PS4 Europe launch date, and several other news bits came with their presser.

Destructoid will be at gamescom this year to play the new games, smell the odors, see the sights, and drink German beer.

News::Shovel Knight Review | CheatMasters

Avoiderdragon: There have been so many tributes to the gaming of yesteryear through indie releases over the years that it has started to get tiring for some. They would usually be some sort of reinvention or reinterpretation of an old genre like a platformer, adventure game, shmup, puzzle game, or so on; which is then topped off with some sort of 8-bit or 16-bit sprite graphics that is either faithful or merely a modified version, as if theyre placeholders for the real thing. Many of them turn out to be modern classics, but a lot of them also turn out to be either mediocre or straight-up duds.

News::Habitat Early Access Impressions: It's Out of this World | TwoDashStash

Earth has been overrun with nanites, destroying human civilizations and devouring the natural resources. The only way for mankind to survive is to flee into orbit with every bit of junk, debris, and national monument that Earth Command can strap a rocket on to and have space engineers build makeshift habitats for the remaining human population. Thats the story of Habitat, but lets face it, were not here for the story. Were here to crash rocket-propelled school busses with flaming dinosaur heads into floating amalgamations of the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower; afterwards, we might consider saving the occasional refugee.

News::Divinity: Original Sin Review | CheatMasters

Avoiderdragon: Whenever an old genre gets some sort of HD remake of a classic, its almost always seen with the rose-colored spectacles of nostalgia, so it has proven itself and its flaws are already well-known. But when its an original release, theres none of that except for longtime fans of that genre. But being able to objectively critique such a game means that its technical and elements must be taken into consideration without pointing out the outdated feel of the gameplay since thats a moot point. That seems to be the case with this particular title, which has been getting quite a bit of attention lately.

News::Forget Retail: Destiny Digital Guardian Edition Pre-Order Is The Best Bang For Your Buck

Joel Taveras of DualShockers writes, "If youre excited for Destiny, youve already pre-ordered, and youve got your money down on one of the more extravagant retail editions, you should take a step back and get a good look at the physical bonuses and figure out if its something you can live without. Because when it comes down to the actual content in the game, theres nothing extra. Remember, you can always slide that pre-order money on to another release at your local retailer, as Im pretty sure theres other titles releasing this fall that you can use that extra $10 or $60 on. If youre going deep with Destiny, the Digital Guardian Edition is the best bang for your buck."

Abyss Odyssey is the kind of game that only an indie developer could make. News::Pixel Boy and the Ever Expanding Dungeon - PC Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes: Boasting procedurally generated levels, RPG-like leveling elements, crafting, and a sense of humor, Pixel Boy and the Ever Expanding Dungeon is very difficult to explain. Fans of Hotline Miami will likely be on-board with Pixel Boy, however, the game is far more accessible to a larger age group due to Hotline Miami's obvious adult overtones. A top-down semi-twin stick shooter action RPG with psychedelic colors and lighting and an electronica soundtrack, Pixel Boy fits into a genre of its own. Giant Box Games is taking and building on some of the most addicting styles of gameplay, and mashing in not only terrible puns, but about every other gaming fad from the last few years (which is not a bad thing)

News::Will This Be The Last Generation Dominated By The Games Console?

IM PLAYIN asks if this is the last generation dominated by the games console, and if the new technologies, like the Oculus Rift, will be popular enough to change how we game. "Over the past two decades, there have been a plethora of games consoles that have come and gone, some rather unceremoniously, Im looking at you Dreamcast. The only ones that have truly stood the test of time are the consoles by Nintendo and Sony, though Nintendo definitely seem on the way out after the somewhat frosty reception for the Wii U. Microsoft have been in the game for a while, though not as long as Sony or Nintendo. The PC, however, has always been there. Nowadays PCs are getting faster, more powerful and cheaper. Plus, there are an absolute tonne of games available on the PC that arent available on consoles (and very few the other way around). Steam is giving PC gamers fantastic deals on relatively new games, plus some developers are even giving early access to players through Steam, so that th...

News::Paranerds: Glitchspace Early Access Analysis

Serving more as a proof of concept at this time than anything else, Glitchspace proves to be a uniquely intriguing combination of elements. Puzzle games are far from rare in this day and age, fewer still which feature the protagonist carrying a gun-like item in a stark white environment thanks to Portal, but then you start to see just what makes it stand out so much. Combining together first person platforming with mathematical equations and logic tasks, it sounds on the surface like a fairly generic release. Then you get into exactly how it handles these elements. Rather than a single game, the entirety of Glitchspace plays out as if it were two separate titles, one hidden inside the other, and occasionally intersecting at specific points.

"Shovel Knight is one of those games that comes around every now and then that gets me hyped up to play video games. There are varying reasons why this happens; sometimes its the developers strong desire to make a good game that is extremely apparent in the games final form, other times it is an idea that is so fresh and ingenious that it transcends the horrid regurgitation cycle that plagues modern game development, other times still, happen for reasons yet unexplained to me, I just tend to gravitate to a game without any comprehension of whether the game is actually going to be good."
