News::Modder Durante has tips to push Dark Souls II's graphics even further

Modder Peter "Durante" Thoman led the charge in making Dark Souls a better-looking game on PC. While the PC port of the sequel is an improvement over developer From Software's last effort, there's room to push its graphics further, and Durante has some tips to make it happen.

Writing for PC Gamer, he's covered downsampling from higher resolutions, how to achieve better anti-aliasing through Nvidia Inspector, an alternate method for ambient occlusion, and using SweetFX to alter the amount of ambient light "to help re-capture a more dramatic mood."

Tweaks, in other words, to get a little something extra out of Dark Souls II. Durante has another article planned that "will investigate the possibilities for and likelihood of more in-depth and game-specific modding." There's no way I'll be able to resist double dipping with the PC version.

News::Design your own ship in Beat Hazard: Shadow Operations DLC

Out of all the places I could play Beat Hazard, I usually play on my phone. Beat Hazard on Steam, however, is packing brand new DLC. The Shadow Operations pack may just change my mind about which platform I choose to play on.

The DLC comes toting nine brand new ships with different firing patterns and abilities, Steam Workshop support, and 16 additional Steam achievements for when you just need something new to accomplish. New ships and achievements aren't the only reasons you'll want to check out the new content, though. You can upload your own images (any .png file) to create your own ships. You mean I can fly around as the Bebop? I'm down.

In addition, the new Shadow Mission system assigns specific quests to each ship, doling out mission stars and ranking you up as you go. You could eventually become Shadow Force Elite, so while you're cranking Daft Punk or Mark Lanegan, consider your true potential. Personally, I play my best games to Capsule or 2NE1, but that's just me.

The Shadow Operations DLC pack is available now for $4.99 and can be purchased here.

News::All New Details on Narrative Exploration title, The Old City

OnlySP: Video games have always attempted some form of narrative. Generally tacked on separate from gameplay, and usually quite bad, telling stories through this interactive medium has rarely deviated from traditional ideas of linear narrative. Only lately have we seen games that attempt to tell story through the unique capabilities inherent in games. The Old City, the upcoming game from Postmod Softworks, is one such project, aiming to integrate story into experiential interactivity and explore deeply philosophical concepts. We talked to Bob, Design Lead and writer, about the fundamentally different approach to the game experience that is setting The Old City apart from its more traditional peers.

News::Life Goes On Review The Adventures of Sir Lives-A-Lot | Twinfinite

Mike from Twinfinite writes, "With modern platformers, the real challenge developers face is preserving that sense of brutal difficulty while preventing the player from simply giving up in frustration. Developer Infinite Monkeys has devised a clever solution to this conundrum: What if instead of being a necessary evil, player death were ESSENTIAL to the players success? Out of that premise comes Life Goes On, and it is one of the smartest and most fun platformers Ive played in recent memory."

Mike from Twinfinite writes, "Viscera Cleanup Detail is essentially a janitorial simulation game, but with a sci-fi twist. The basic premise is that you exist in the aftermath of the epic battle between a video game hero who has wiped out an alien invasion. The threat has been neutralized and everyone is off celebrating victory. You, on the other hand must get to work cleaning up the mess left behind. It is at its most basic level a cross between Super Mario Sunshine and Dead Space."

As somebody who has always been fascinated by this historical era, I'm very excited to see how it will be treated by one of my favorite game series. This popular revolution that overthrew France's decadent nobility, then descended into paranoia and mob rule is an excellent backdrop for a different kind of Assassin story."
