News:: Arcade racer Onrush seems like a total riot

I've had Onrush filed away in my mind as a frenetic off-road arcade racer from Codemasters, and it is that, but there's more going on than expected at first glance. The vehicles have classes, my friends.

As shown in today's video, everyone has their own abilities and characteristics. Some cars can blind opponents, while others leave behind a trail of fire. Certain vehicles are able to drop boost pick-ups for teammates, and some can disable drivers' boost by ramming into them. The classes also build their "Rush" meter in various ways; Blade gets it from doing flips, but Vortex earns it from barrel rolls.

I was pretty much on-board with Onrush back when I thought it was a standard arcade-style racer, but these extra layers should make for a longer-lasting experience. Here's the full class lineup:

News:: Xbox is adding Discord functionality, but not for voice chat

Discord has supplanted all other PC chat services to become the current standard-bearer for online gaming. Soon, it'll expand its horizons to console functionality.

Microsoft revealed today that it's in the process of integrating Discord into Xbox. By linking Discord and Xbox accounts, people will be able track their friends' activity while on either platform. The example Microsoft gives hypothesizes that someone might look at their Discord friends list to see someone playing Sea of Thieves. So, they hop on Xbox Live and join their buddy.

However, there's a substantial limiting factor: This integration doesn't include any sort of audio chat. Xbox Live parties and Discord chat aren't compatible in any way. That's disappointing considering that Discord is the go-to for online gaming voice communication for many people. But, Xbox needs to keep its platform secure, and granting full access to third-parties flies in the face of that notion. Microsoft has made significant strides to meld the PC and Xbox One experiences for its audience -- as long as those experiences stay within the Windows 10 ecosystem.

News:: Sea of Thieves' new update changes a little and fixes a lot

The rough-and-tumble waters of Sea of Thieves are getting a bit more hospitable. Well, not from other players. They'll still kill you right dead. But the game itself keeps getting more and more polished.

Rare has released update 1.0.5 for Sea of Thieves. There isn't a single change to really latch onto. Like, the same shanty won't play twice in a row anymore, and interface screens fade in now. That's quality of life stuff -- not the sort of thing that significantly changes the player experience. (Rare does also mention that new cosmetics for clothes, weapons, items, and ships are coming soon.)

This patch does have its share of fixes and improvements, though. Each bulletpoint is a minor frustration melting away. All the exact details of the 1.0.5 update are listed below:

News:: Noctis and pals are heading to Minecraft with a Final Fantasy XV skin pack

Thanks to Square Enix, Noctis now takes up so many different forms that it's getting hard to keep track. From his normal boy-band-hair-inspired self in the base game, ranging in various resolutions, to multiple games such as Tekken 7 and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, to even his chibi form in the Pocket Edition or animated form in the anime series.

Now, he's becoming extra blocky, as he's making his way to Minecraft with the Final Fantasy XV skin pack and he's bringing his boys with him. Going for $2.99 on the PlayStation Store, this new skin pack contains skins for over a dozen characters and is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC versions of the game.

Now you can have Noctis on practically any device you want him on! How terrifying.

Indie platformer Fox N Forests will be launching for all platforms (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Mac and Linux) on May 17, 2018. I demoed the game at PAX this year and walked away pretty impressed, so definitely count me in for checking this out. News:: 'Destiny 2' Warmind add-on puts a horde event on arctic Mars

Bungie had teased that the second DLC for its sci-fi shooter Destiny 2, named Warmind after the game's humanity-defending mega-AI, would come out May 8th. In a livestream today, the company finally released details. In addition to a brand-new area in Helles Basin, Mars, players get a new public event and tweaks to almost every exotic in the game, plus a slew of other changes.

News:: Home is where the hub world is

Platformers make up many of my fondest gaming memories, ranging from oldies like Super Mario Sunshine to newbies like A Hat in Time and Rayman Legends. There are many things I love about them, such as speedrunning through obstacle courses and reacting against fast-paced hazards and enemies. Heck, recently I rambled about how strongly I want this genre to stick around (the answer is "a lot"). But somehow, most of those platformer memories always trace back to one particular activity: messing around in a hub world by jumping aimlessly.

It’s strange, because I never purchased these games expecting to waste time like that. Yet every now and then I feel compelled to revisit my favorite platformers for no purpose other than to bounce around and press buttons for their own sakes, because I remember enjoying that so much. And it’s no secret that I’m frequently driven by accomplishing arbitrary objectives. Why would I of all people love neglecting such objectives so much?

The straightforward answer is it means the controls are just that much fun, and by proxy, the rest of these games are fun too.

News:: Death Road to Canada's console ports have been delayed in wake of Toronto tragedy

Death Road to Canada was supposed to be getting Switch, PS4, and Xbox One ports tomorrow, but a recent tragedy in Toronto, Canada has prompted developer Rocketcat Games and publisher Ukiyo Publishing to indefinitely delay the title. Managing director of Ukiyo, Paul Hann, stated, "We feel it would be deeply inappropriate to launch the game at such a time. We would like to express our deepest condolences to everyone affected by the tragic events in Toronto."

For those unaware, a man in Toronto yesterday (April 23) drove a rental truck onto the sidewalk and struck a number of pedestrians, killing 10 and leaving 15 more injured. While not deemed an act of terrorism, the man's motives have yet to be determined.

Even though Death Road to Canada makes no references to aggravated assault, the game's title is eerily similar to the events that transpired. I can definitely understand wanting to delay this release instead of having it be highlighted on the digital storefronts during the grieving period for the victim's families.

News:: Frostpunk release-week deals as high as 25% off

It's a great week for fans of strategy games as a number of higher-profile titles release today including BattleTech and now Frostpunk. Both titles are sitting pretty on top of the Steam top-seller list, with the steampunk city builder Frostpunk presently at the #1 slot. Brought to you by the developers of This War of Mine, 11 bit studios' latest title is well received by both critics and player (though it appears if you're a Chinese gamer on a Chinese language Windows OS you may be in for some technical difficulties).

Priced at only $29.99, Frostpunk isn't going to be a huge commitment for early adopters - and it can be significantly cheaper thanks to the wonderful world of PC games digital retailer. We've spotted two solid deals on Frostpunk for release week.

Frostpunk Deals

  • Frostpunk at GMG (Steam) — $22.49  (list price $30)
  • 25% off coupon on this page (login required)
  • Or use GMG22 for 22% off

Both retailers are selling the same Steam key of Frostpunk, though regional pricing may differ (translation: we didn't bother checking the price outside of North America). The Fanatical SUPER6 code only takes 6% off but did not apply to this game previously as it excluded pre-order titles. For GMG's deal, the best discount of 25% off is hidden behind a login gate, but since you'll have to create an account to checkout anyways this probably isn't a huge barrier.

For those with technical difficulties (even if you're not a Chinese user) and Windows 7 or 8, make sure you install the latest Visual C package and everything should be kosher for Frostpunk.

The download size for Frostpunk is a modest 4.7GB, so even if you're buying today you should be able to play soon - provided your Internet isn't stuck in a '90s speed limit.

News:: Dark Souls Remastered will offer a discount to PC owners of original port

When Dark Souls Remastered was announced for PC, a lot of players were a bit annoyed at the lack of a discount for existing owners. Dark Souls 2 had offered a similar pricing structure when Scholar of the First Sin released, so why were PC players being asked to pay full price for a new version that did the exact same thing as the DSFix mod? Bandai Namco has finally cleared up that issue and announced that a "loyalty" discount will be available on release.

The bigger piece of news is that the currently available "Prepare to Die Edition" will be removed from Steam once Remastered comes out. While previous owners will still be able to install that version, any newcomers will be limited to this newer port. I don't have an issue with that, though I am a bit worried that some of the changes in this remastered port might ruin the original art design.

News:: Destiny 2's new Mars expansion Warmind looks all right

On a stream today, Bungie and Vicarious Visions detailed Warmind, the Mars-centric expansion for Destiny 2. It's due out in just two weeks -- on Tuesday, May 8 for $20 -- and spans a few key additions.

There's a new horde-mode-like endgame activity called Escalation Protocol, which has players teaming up to survive waves of Hive forces and, despite the simple premise, sounds like something I could really get behind as a lapsed player. There's another Raid Lair, dubbed Spire of Star, set on the Leviathan. And there will be more strikes -- including a timed exclusive on PlayStation 4 ("until at least fall 2018") called The Insight Terminus; in it, guardians will break into a Vex tomb on Nessus.

News:: Battlefield 1 ceases monthly updates in June, but there's still maps and modes rolling out until then

In a new post on their official blog, Battlefield developer DICE have announced that will be bringing an end to the monthly updates that have been rolling out for Battlefield 1 since the game first launched, way back in October 2016.

Although the final update for the WWI shooter will arrive in June, DICE have still assured fans that the fun's not over just yet. Maps from the game's They Shall Not Pass expansion are slowly being rolled out to all players, beginning with "Rupture," which is free to all players now.

June will also see new mode Shock Operations. This 40-player battle will follow the standard Operations procedure, but limited to one map, ideal for those players who just want to jump in for a quick bout on en masse warfare. This mode will be playable on maps "Giant's Shadow," "Lupkow Pass," "Zeebrugge," "River Somme," and "Prise de Tahure." Players can play Shock Operations on these maps regardless as to whether they are Premium Pass members or not.

So, it seems like there's still plenty of life in the old dog yet. Battlefield 1 continues to receive fun new content, at least for the foreseeable future, while DICE no doubt continues development on the next entry is this long-running series.

News:: Discord comes to Xbox for integrated chats

Discord added an SDK to make it easier for friends to jump into each other's games and even added Spotify integration, but the service has stood on its own as a scrappy alternative to much bigger fish like Xbox Live. News:: The Capcom x Sega PlayStation Humble Bundle is a great collection for Sony fans

If you're a penny pinching console gamer and are looking to score a bunch of great games, this latest Humble Bundle is right up your alley. Spanning all of Sony's PSN supported consoles, Capcom and Sega are offering up a huge amount of classic games for under $10. What's more, going up to $15 sees you nab two modern classics, both are which are completely worth $15 on their own.

The tiers are all listed below so as not to confuse anyone. The bundle will be running from now until May 8 at 11:00 am PST. It will be available only for North American PSN regions (United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Paraguay, Honduras, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Nicaragua).

If I didn't already own 90% of this, I'd jump on the $15 tier without batting an eye. This is quite the deal and you'd have to be crazy to pass it up.

News:: Test your hostage negotiation skills in ‘Detroit: Become Human’ demo

Detroit: Become Human is out at the end of next month, but you can get a taste of it today. The PlayStation 4 exclusive has a demo out today on the PlayStation Network Store (where else would it be?). It might look a little familiar if you've been paying attention to the game, too, centering on the hostage negotiation scene from the game's E3 debut two years ago. Last year, press at the show got to go hands on with this section, searching a glitzy Motor City high-rise apartment for clues and evidence before dealing with a rogue robot nanny holding a gun to his charge's head.

News:: Gungrave VR Complete coming soon in Japan, western release still on track

In case you haven't heard yet, Gungrave has risen from the dead in the form of a PSVR game. It launched back in December exclusively on PS4, and now it seems to be doing well enough for itself that it's warranting a full physical edition this summer.

Launching in Japan yet again Gungrave VR Complete Edition is a bundle of the original game, as well as a new mode (Episode 2) and various patches included on-disc. Again all of this is slated for Japan-only at the moment, but a western release is in the cards at some point.

While I doubt it's going to offer anything special from a VR perspective, as a big fan of artist Yasuhiro Nightow's work, I'll be giving it a shot.

News:: Tacoma lands on PS4 in early May

Fullbright's sophomore effort, Tacoma, was an (inter)stellar take on non-linear storytelling aboard an abandoned space station. Soon, a whole new platform's audience will have the opportunity to unravel the whereabouts of the Tacoma crew via in-game augmented reality.

It was revealed today that Tacoma is releasing on PlayStation 4 on May 8. This is approximately nine months after initial launch on PC and Xbox One in August 2017. Those who are keen to pick up the PS4 version immediately will get a slight discount.

Also, this port comes bearing a little extra. Fullbright has put together a commentary mode (likely similar to the one that Gone Home had) that features more than two hours of developer insight. Other platforms won't feel left out, though. The commentary will be added to the PC and Xbox One versions of Tacoma as a free update.

News:: Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is coming to Nintendo Switch

At the Nexon Developer's Conference in South Korea, developer Arc System Works announced that their classic anime fighter Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is to be reborn on the Nintendo Switch.

GGXX A Plus R originally launched in Japanese arcades back in 2013, before eventually being ported to the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PS Vita. It was the final game of the XX series, featuring one last overhaul and re-balance of the game's roster, HUD and battle mechanics.

No further information was revealed at the conference, so we don't have a launch date, or any announcement of a worldwide release. In a nice tribute, the Switch release will include the Korean-exclusive soundtrack of Guilty Gear XX #Reload, which was composed by musician Shin Hae-chul, who passed away in 2014.

News:: Battle royale pioneer 'H1Z1' comes to PS4 on May 22nd

PS4 players don't have many major choices for battle royale games: there's Fortnite, of course, but you won't find PUBG or up-and-coming games like Radical Heights. All that is about to change in a month, though, as Daybreak is releasing H1Z1 (the title that arguably started the battle royale trend) an open PS4 beta on May 22nd. It'll remain free-to-play with purchasable cosmetic items, but will pack new progression mechanics to keep things quick, including the pacing of the gas (the zone of death in battle royale titles) and airdrops.

News:: Speedrunner sets new world record with New Super Mario Bros. collecting no power-ups in the process

Mario games are pretty fun to speedrun. They generally take almost no time to get started (the one in this very article only takes 35 seconds for the opening cutscene to end), and allow for a large degree of freedom -- 2D or 3D -- in how you approach them.

That's fairly obvious with this new run by MyLittleWalrus, who speeds through New Super Mario Bros. in just 30 minutes and 37 seconds. If you ever wanted to see the entire game from start to finish but never got around to it, now's your chance.

The thing is, he did it without picking up any power-ups, allowing him to set the new world record "Low %" run by nearly an entire minute. That also means he can't get hit as he stays in small Mario form the entire game, and only dies when he needs to, to save a few precious seconds skipping ahead with tricks like checkpoint triggering and warping.

Well done!

News:: Wolfenstein II gets explosive Nintendo Switch trailer and June release date

Bethesda have finally announced a release date for the Nintendo Switch port of last year's smash-hit shooter, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. The game will be available for the hybrid console June 29.

Wolfenstein II, by MachineGames, tells the ongoing tale of B.J. Blazkowicz and his band of revolutionaries as they attempt to overthrow The New Order, along with one of The Right's most merciless commandants, Frau Engel. The game was praised for its cathartic chaos and well-dramatised cutscenes, as well as the twists and turns of its bat-shit crazy storyline.

Bethesda also released a new trailer to help stoke your hype fire. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus launches on Nintendo Switch June 29. It is also available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

News:: Sonic Mania hits over one million downloads worldwide

In the latest issue of Famitsu, which also confirms the inevitable release of Sonic Mania Plus for Japan, it has also been revealed that Sonic Mania has reached a new milestone of over one million downloads worldwide.

Here's hoping Plus only furthers this success and sends a clear message to Sega on the direction fans want the series to be taking. That said, personally, I'm still of the mindset that we can easily have both classic and modern style releases.

Although Sonic Mania was fantastic, I'd still love to see another crack at the Adventure formula -- just as long as it doesn't end up like Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

News:: Splatoon 2's huge Version 3.0 update brings new gear, new rank, balance changes and much more

Today sees Nintendo's fun arena-shooter Splatoon 2 updated to Version 3.0. This new patch is preparing to roll out the red carpet for the game's upcoming Octo Expansion, releasing July 31.

As for today's patch, it's a doozy. Version 3.0 adds an entire new tier to Ranked Multiplayer, Rank X, as well as making hundreds of tweaks and fixes to gameplay in general. Weapons and stages have gone through an entire re-balancing process. Changes have also been made to the game's Salmon Run, Splatfest and Spectator modes. Finally, an array of bugs have also been stamped out across the board.

This is absolutely the biggest overhaul the game has seen in sometime, and is expected to shake-up the multiplayer and redefine the game's meta. As previously mentioned, Today's Version 3.0 patch lays the groundwork for the upcoming Octo Expansion, which will bring new characters, gear, maps, single-player content and more. It's an exciting time to be a squid, now or a kid, now.

Splatoon 2 Version 3.0 patch notes can be read below. For further information on weapon and stage re-balancing, check out the official Nintendo update page right here.

It's been a long time in coming, but the Nintendo Switch adaptation of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is (almost) here. Bethesda has announced that the Nazi-punching sequel will be available on June 29th for $60. You'll generally know what to expect, and that's likely to be a good thing. News:: A revamped version of battle royale H1Z1 is coming to PlayStation 4 next month

“Battle royale” is a ubiquitous term in the gaming media right now, constantly finding its way into headlines as more developers and publishers jump on the bandwagon, hoping to find the same success afforded to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite. We’ve heard whispers of EA and Activision getting into the genre with Battlefield and Call of Duty respectively, potentially joining projects by Boss Key Productions and however many mods of existing games there are out there. They’ll also join H1Z1, the game Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene consulted on before moving onto his own project.

If you haven’t heard of H1Z1, or you completely forgot about it, it’s hard to blame you. Since September, two games have dominated the conversation, turning the Daybreak Game Company title into something of a distant third-place competitor. But it predates both PUBG and current king Fortnite. It had a rocky Early Access launch in 2015. A year later it was announced the game would be split into two separate projects: Just Survive and the battle royale King of the Hill. That moniker was later dropped and now the mode is simply known as H1Z1.

After three years of Early Access, it officially launched on PC in February and went free-to-play -- an arguably necessary move that pissed off some of its Steam buyers if reviews are to be believed. Next month, the game will make the jump to console with an open beta on the PlayStation 4.

News:: Review: The Swords of Ditto

Stop me if you've heard this one before: A young adventurer washes up on the shore of some mysterious land—perhaps an island under the curse of a wicked magician—and winds up battling evil to save the day. Sound familiar? It should. And if that's the case, then don't expect to be surprised by first few minutes of The Swords of Ditto. But keep playing, because what at first seems like a trite take on a well-worn concept reveals itself to be a charming-as-hell game with a voice and style all its own.

The Swords of Ditto is an easily-digestible action game distilled through the lens of youthful adventure. It's warm and funny, with adorable characters and an imaginative world that feels like the playable version of a Saturday morning cartoon; this is a game that will make you smile plenty of times.
