News::This is what a live-action PS1 RPG would look like

This is what a live-action PS1 RPG would look like screenshot

Blue Core Studios, producer of the recent Sonic fan film, has decided to pump out a quickie short that pays homage to PS1-era RPGs, most notably the Final Fantasy series. I think the team was able to perfectly capture the slow, stiff, clunky overworld movements that call back to a time when NPCs were emotionless polygonal freaks and the camera tried desperately to emulate a dynamic movie-like experience.

Hmmm... when I put it that way, I guess very little has changed since then! Zing!

Oh, and bonus points for the totally PC ending.

News::'Rhythmic awareness' required for platformer 140

'Rhythmic awareness' required for platformer 140 screenshot

At first glance, I was ready to write off 140 for its unabashedly simple art style. Silly me. I should know better than to do something like that by now. Nominated for Excellence in Audio at the 2013 Independent Games Festival, 140 is the work of Jeppe Carlsen and Jakob Schmid of Playdead.

While I didn't recognize his name and you likely won't either (yet!), Carlsen was the lead gameplay designer on Limbo , one of the more interesting platformers to go mainstream in the past few years. He did the puzzles for the acclaimed game and 140 is a personal project of his that's been in the works for over two years now.

With this trailer, they've got my attention. Was that a "boss fight" near the end? I'd like to see more where that came from.

News::Fun In The Sun With Far Cry 3 - Criken vs Wild

Eskimo Press: When we're playing games it can sometimes be a lot of fun to think outside of the box and try to pull off stunts that the game designers maybe didn't have in mind when they made the game. It's especially fun to mess around in open world games, as vast worlds are usually a great place to find weird glitches. In a game like Far Cry 3 where you've got plenty of npc's, and a wide range of wildlife, inhabiting the world -- there's going to be some wtf moments

News::IGN - Crysis 3: Giving Meaning to the FPS

IGN - ust how human is Crysis 3 going to be? According to various interviews from developer Crytek, this game will attempt to subvert meat-headed norms in first-person-shooters, and aim straight for the players emotional reactor core. But its no easy thing to give an FPS real heart. Crysis 3 is a violent video game offering apocalyptic fantasies of neo-fascistic corporations unhinged by the grim consequences of tech-timeline chaos-events, thrown together with jellyfish alien incursions and megalomaniacal boffinry. All this is folded into Discovery Channel visions of verdantly corrupted metropolata inhabited by warriors, not so much grizzled by combat, as smelted to mechanistic extremes.

News::This ass is selling 40+ copies of Hyrule Historia LE

This ass is selling 40+ copies of Hyrule Historia LE screenshot

I've got myself a copy of the Zelda series bible Hyrule Historia , and it's as amazing as everyone says. However, for highly appealing ancillary game merch such as art books, I like to splurge a little extra on fancy collector's editions just for the heck of it. I wanted to snag the Limited Edition of Hyrule Historia, which was restricted to a mere 4000 copies, but the damn thing sold out within minutes of appearing on various pre-order pages. Publisher Dark Horse screwed up the allotted shipments so badly that many orders were quietly canceled without any notice to the buyers. It seemed like the only guaranteed way to score an LE was to make the trek to the Nintendo World Store in New York City on the book's release date.

A few days ago, this magnificent bastard with the username Tommy98118 posts on Craigslist that he's in possession of the hotly sought-after tome and is willing to part with it for a hefty fee. But it's not just one book that's for sale, nor two, nor three, nor even ten. This asshole is sitting on over 40 copies -- literally 1% of the entire run of LEs -- and is scalping them like the little rat he is.

The reddit peanut gallery did not find this shady scheme amusing at all. I mean, when all these other honest consumers were getting dicked over by Dark Horse's ineptitude, how did this fucker make out like a bandit? Tommy must have caught wind of all the calls for his head, because he swiftly changed the header image of his listing to show only a single copy of the book. Thankfully, the sleuths on NeoGAF screen-capped his shame before he could sweep it under the rug.

I swear to Christ, some people are the worst.

News::Game Guys review - Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear

To say that the modern-era militaristic first-person shooter genre is over-saturated would be quite the understatement thanks to seemingly annual editions of EA's Battlefield and Activision's Call of Duty, not to mention countless one-offs and also-rans from a number of different developers and publishers. What there isn't a whole of are modern-era rail shooters of any kind. Heavy Fire: Shattered Spear, a new title from publisher Mastiff, is that second kind and it provides a different (yet lackluster) experience compared to its traditional modern-era FPS options.

News::Omerta: City of Gangsters Review | PixelPerfectGaming

Omerta: City of Gangsters is a fantastic old-school role-playing game like the ones we used to play back in the day. There hasnt been a strategy game since the early 90s that can stack up to Omerta. Kalypso Media has brought back the enjoyment of strategy-based games with this release. I havent had this much fun with a strategy game in a very long time. Omerta is divided into two different components a strategy based map overview and an RTS combat system. The strategy portion of Omerta is very easy to understand, yet complex at the same time. The game takes place during the roaring twenties when prohibition existed and alcohol was illegal to possess and consume.

News::Dungeonland Review | ComboCaster

Created by Critical Studio, Dungeonland is a humble dungeon crawler where players face their enemies in search of better loot and treasure. Full of fun, and very little coherence death this little hack and slash with RPG elements have anything but a singleplayer component, which, well, was welcome. At first glance, one might assume that Dungeonland is a game somewhat superficial not have any substantial depth. In fact, this assumption would be fairly accurate. Despite being part of a genre that is known for its deep and complex gameplay full of points to distribute and choice of equipment, Dungeonland never worries about being overly complex. Indeed, that is why the game works so well. Although this is a dungeon crawler by definition, is more a game than a casual Diablo. He renounces the depth to focus on pure pleasure, lack clear whether the formula for the other players, those who really want a Diablo.
