News:: The 300 Week 15: One Hundred Down, Two Hundred More to Go

Hey, compaƱeros, and welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my imprudent attempt to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. I hope there’s something here for you to enjoy and share as well.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

You guys, I have hit 100 movies.

It’s a testament to the incredible film programming in New York City that I saw a lot of stuff in theaters and yet missed out on so much more. If it wasn’t for MoviePass, independent cinemas, and excellent repertory programming, I wouldn’t have hit triple digits at this rate. Here’s a shout-out to my go-to theaters. Thanks for being awesome.

The next two installments of The 300 will be dedicated to coverage of the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, which kicks off tonight and runs through April 29th. Jesse Lab and I will be reviewing many of the films screening at the 17th year of the fest. Be sure to visit Flixist for the next three weeks for all of our Tribeca Film Festival coverage.

And so, onward.

News:: May's Pokemon Go community event is a little fiery

Following on from April's sheep specific event, May's Pokemon Go community day will feature the fire starter Charmander as its main focus. On May 19, Trainers will finally be able to evolve into a Charizard thanks to increased spanws for the cutest little flame lizard known to man. Just like with the past events, any Charmeleon's evolved into Charizard during the event will learn a special move for battle.

You'll be able to take to your local parks from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm PST and receive 3x the stardust for catching Pokemon as well as have a chance to buy a special Community Day box from the in-game store. Shiny Pokemon seem to have a higher spawn rate during these events, so you'll also be likely to get a shiny Charizard before the day is done. The benefits aren't as pronounced as they have been for past events, but I'm happy to finally be able to find Charmanders in the wild. CT really sucks for any non-basic critters.

News:: The Binge Log: Japanator's Guide to Spring 2018 Anime

It's time again for another batch of anime to hit the tubes, which means it's time for another installment of the Binge Log, our seasonal roundup of impressions and hot takes on all the latest Japanese cartoons.

As in previous installments, below you'll find a big ol' list of Spring's newest series, and, where applicable, the thoughts Destructoid and Japanator staff had on what they've seen so far. This Spring seems to be bringing a heavy lineup of big-name sequels and adaptations, including a new Sword Art Online spinoff, the latest installments of powerhouses like Food Wars! and My Hero Academia, and even many a veteran anime fan's white whale: a brand-new series based on Full Metal Panic!

Now, this isn't an exhaustive list of the frankly absurd amount of anime series being debuted this season, but it's definitely a rundown of the shows we've watched so far or otherwise felt the need to comment on, along with some quickie info on where you can begin your spring otaku journey! Head on through to see what we thought, and sound off on what we cruelly forgot to keep an eye on this season!

News:: Russia's Telegram ban is causing problems for Twitch

According to multiple reports on Reddit and Twitter, Twitch has been blocked in Russia to some extent. This comes a day after the country's state communications regulator finally managed to silence the secure messaging app Telegram. To do so, the nation blocked IP addresses owned by Google and Amazon -- the latter of which owns Twitch.

News:: Final Fantasy XIV's Eureka is a step in the right direction, but more work needs to be done

Although the Eureka zone of Final Fantasy XIV arrived roughly a month ago, it's taken me a really long time to process just how I feel about it.

Billed as a return to old school Final Fantasy XI sensibilities, the landscape has drastically changed as the players took control of the activity. What was once thought to be an enemy-after-enemy chain grind became a notorious monster hunt train.

Let's take a look at how it all went down and where Square Enix can go from here.

News:: Dynamite Headdy is coming to blow up your smartphones

When I saw the PR e-mail from Sega about Dynamite Headdy joining Sega Forever, my mind went to straight to Decap Attack. I have no idea why, but for some reason I've confused the two games over the years. Anyway, you can now download Dynamite Headdy for free on your smart device of choice and get to puppeteering your way through multiple levels of zany platforming.

This is Treasure's (Sin and Punishment, Ikaruga) third game for the Genesis following Gunstar Heroes and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure, with many claiming this to be one of the top ten games on the system. I've only briefly played it in the Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3, but I might just have to sit down and give it a more thorough look. It does look very colorful and is highly unique, even for this day and age.

The free download is add supported, but you can pay a $1.99 fee to remove them. As with other Sega Forever ports, this game features cloud saving, leaderboards and bluetooth controller support, which should make old school players very happy.

News:: EA is reportedly working on a Battlefield battle royale

Battle royale is the hottest video game trend right now, and it seems like everyone wants in. Just one day after it was reported that Call of Duty may be getting a battle royale mode, there's rumor that Battlefield might too.

GamesBeat is reporting that developer EA DICE is currently prototyping a battle royale mode for Battlefield. It's allegedly still early in development, so it's not clear exactly how EA's attempt at battle royal would work; the conventional formula is that 100 players drop onto an island and fight until only one person (or one team) remains.

What's even more unclear is how EA might choose to implement battle royale. GamesBeat's sources make it sound as if EA doesn't intend to have the mode ready by the time Battlefield V launches later this year. Instead, EA might patch it in sometime post-launch. Or, this is something that could be released as a standalone product. (Alternatively, this is just a prototype at this point, meaning it could be scrapped altogether or transferred to another EA property.)

EA has declined to comment, most likely because it hasn't even formally announced Battlefield V's existence yet. However, it was GamesBeat that originally broke the news of Battlefield V in early March, which EA has never necessarily denied. The fact that GamesBeat seemingly has reliable sources combined with the way that everyone's bending over backward to create a battle royale mode means that this report is probably spot-on. It's just entirely too likely.

News:: Yakuza 6 launch trailer prepares the Dragon of Dojima for his final showdown

This week sees the Western launch of Sega's Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. For over ten years we have watched protagonist Kazuma Kiryu defend the weak and the innocent with little more than a stoic demeanor, a sharp suit and a nearby bicycle or ten.

Sega have released a final "accolades" trailer, singing the praises of this week's PS4 release with a selection of soundbites taken from its many positive reviews. These are set to a fast-paced montage of the ex-Yakuza in action, be it kicking ass and taking names, or throwing darts and diving into the ocean for a spot of fishing.

I've loved every one of these titles. They're all the frikkin' same, but that's besides the point. You grow to love the city of Kamurocho and its inhabitants, rather than tire of it. From saving puppies to cooking noodles. From starting up a photo blog, or solving a 20-year-old murder mystery, to fighting tigers in an underground palace. The series has filled me with excitement, drama, joy and laughs. Thus I will likely become a silly wreck at Yakuza 6's finale, however events transpire.

Here's to the Dragon of Dojima, it's been an amazing journey.

News:: Just look at some of these good superpowers in LEGO The Incredibles

Marvelous, amazing, unbelievable, awesome -- these are some of the synonyms for incredible that I considered using in the headline. When you're writing about The Incredibles, the word incredible is kind of off the table. I eventually settled on "good" because, despite what you've heard, I am not a wordsmith.

But just take a gander at some of the neat stuff going on in the first LEGO The Incredibles gameplay trailer. Stretchy Mom turns herself into a raft. Fast Boi runs across the water. StrongDad gets shirtless.

All of it looks like it'd make for a fine Pixar film, but it also looks like it'd fit perfectly in a LEGO game. That's probably a good sign. If this is the first in a series of Pixar LEGO games, I'm not sure there could've been a better starting point than The Incredibles.

News:: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer is bananas

I wasn't a huge fan of Jurassic World when it first came out, but I can tell you that I liked that fact that it ended with t-rex, a raptor, and a genetically modified dino fighting it out in an obvious homage to early Hollywood monster movies. Once that happened I knew that they were ditching the pseudo-science thread of the originals and basically going all out monster movie, and it let you frame the movie in a slightly better light.

Well, if the conclusion of the first film was a hint at the franchise's direction than the newest trailer for the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is basically shouting it. We're in full monster movie territory, folks. Giant sea creatures taking out helicopters? War mongering corporations designing super dinosaurs? The return of plucky dino sidekick Blue? All we need now is a giant monkey. We've left the behind the very basic attempts to be somewhat realistic of Jurassic Park, and we're in full commitment to something entirely different. This is Jurassic Park via Godzilla, not Michael Chrichton.

And I'm kind of all for it? Is that bad? This just looks like some crazy fun, and no I'm not just saying the because The Goldblum, hollowed be his name, is in it.With my expectations re-calibrated to giant monster movie, I'm actually looking forward to this.

News:: King of Fighters XIV 3.01 hopes to fix Cronenberg-esque body horror issue

An awesome new update recently brought balance changes and cool new characters to SNK's fighting title The King of Fighters XIV. Unfortunately, it also brought a nightmarish bug to some on the receiving end of Robert Garcia's command grab.

As you can see in the images below certain fighters, such as Chang and Nakoruru, would momentarily morph when hit with the fast-kicking grab attack. Despite the comical side-effect of making these characters look like extras from Brian Yuzna's Society, SNK have thought it best to put forward a patch eliminating the issue.

Alongside the bug fix, Update 3.01 will also tweak issues pertaining to the new characters, including fixes to hitboxes, move whiffs and other glitches. Superfan @frionel26 has listed some of the translated patch notes on their twitter. As of yet there is no scheduled release date for Update 3.01.

News:: Konami and Pro Evolution Soccer lost the exclusive rights to the UEFA Champions League

For the past 10 years, there was only one place for an officially-licensed video game recreation of the famed UEFA Champions League tournament: Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer. That's set to change in some capacity.

UEFA announced today its 10-year partnership with Konami is coming to an end. When the real-life Champions League concludes in May, the long-running agreement granting PES exclusive rights to the Champions League will also end. Konami senior brand director Jonas Lygaard commented "We will shift our focus into other areas. We will continue to explore alternative ways UEFA and Konami can continue to work together, as our relationship remains strong."

There are two key players in the soccer video game market: PES and FIFA. It'd be reasonable to infer that EA Sports might very well swoop (or has already swooped) on the Champions League license. An alternative possibility is that it could be featured in both series this year.

Whichever way you look at it, PES lost one of its most substantial advantages over FIFA. And FIFA fans have to be thrilled about what that means for FIFA 19.

News:: Call of Duty: WWII begins new Blitzkrieg community event

Activision have unveiled a new community event for their hugely-successful shooter Call of Duty: WWII. The Blitzkrieg event, which is live from now until May 8, brings new weapons, modes and other content to the game's multiplayer.

First up is "new" map HQ, which all of you will recognise at it is, obviously, WWII's multiplayer hub now transformed into an actual battleground! The HQ now has its own playlist, but is limited to Free-For-All, Prop Hunt and Gun Game modes.

Six new weapons have been added to the game's jam-packed arsenal. These include the ITRA burst rifle, the classic M2 Carbine rifle, the Sterling sub-machine gun and the bolt action Type 38 sniper rifle. For Inglorious Bastards fans, a common or garden Baseball Bat has been added for those close encounters. Grisly.

Finally, new game mode Ground War, which pits teams of nine players against each other  has gone live. Given the higher playercount featured in these battles, Ground War is limited to the larger maps, to prevent things from getting a little too cosy.

You can check out the new trailer below to see the new content in action. Call of Duty: WWII is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

News:: Old school-tinted shooter Immortal Redneck is coming to Switch next month

Immortal Redneck came out last year on PC and hit PS4 and Xbox One several months ago, but the jury was still out on the "TBA" Switch edition. Well wonder no more, as developer Crema has confirmed that the Switch version is set for a May 10 release.

Given its procedural roguelike setup, it's going to be a great fit on Switch. Before you yawn at the concept note that Immortal Redneck is a fantastic ode to old school shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament, with a fun locomotion system and a host of weaponry.

I've already gone through it on two platforms, but I think Switch will be my focus going forward for this one because of how quickly I can get runs in on the go.

News:: The end of Konami’s Champions League partnership isn’t great for PES

The battle between the Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) and FIFA franchises has raged on for years over which gave the superior soccer/football experience. But Konami's deal with the UEFA for a virtual Champions League mode in its games gave PES an edge over its rival. So today's announcement that the soccer organization is ending its 10-year partnership with Konami might be dire news for future PES titles.

News:: Interested in Fist of the North Star? Yakuza 6 wants to know

Today is a good day to be a fan of the Yakuza series. The delayed Yakuza 6: The Song of Life finally releases internationally, with Yakuza Kiwami 2 to follow later this year. However, it's been hard to overlook the elephant in the room, which is the absence of news about Hokuto ga Gotoku, the Yakuza team's upcoming game based on the legendary Fist of the North Star series.

As players have been starting up their brand new copies of Yakuza 6, they've been discovering a new survey that has come with the game, which ends on a question we all know the answer to: Are you interested in Fist of the North Star?

News:: Accidental Sonic Mania update reveals details on Sonic Mania Plus

Some of Sonic the Hedgehog's UK fans turned on their PS4s yesterday to find a new update waiting for them in beloved 2017 release Sonic Mania. The patch, which apparently wasn;t supposed to go live, tweaked certain features in the platformer, likely intended for the upcoming Sonic Mania Plus re-release.

First and foremost, all stage transition now include their own cutscenes, as opposed to just some of them. One of the game's bosses has also been revamped entirely (I won't name names for spoilers, but you can find out who in the link below). In addition to these changes, the Time Limit can now be switched off in the options menu and unlockable abilities - such as Insta-Shield - can now be used in conjunction with your save games.

There seems to be some confusion as to who did and didn't receive this update, so it's likely shouldn't have rolled out, at all, for anybody. Regardless, at least we get a sample of the changes that await us when Sonic Mania Plus finally launches, for reals, later this year.

News:: The Master Chief Collection will be getting Xbox One X support, among other things

Ever since the launch of the Master Chief Collection in late 2014, 343 Industries has been busy with updates to its compendium of Halo titles. With the launch of the Xbox One X, you'd have figured 4K support would've been immediately available for Microsoft's premiere franchise. Coming this summer, just that will be added to the MCC, further making that Halo 3 backwards compatible update seem odd.

343 isn't stopping at just upping the resolution, though. Among the many changes coming to this compilation include improvements to the dire matchmaking service, LAN support and even HDR color. The biggest has to be the "Intelligent Install" system, which should theoretically let you install only the bits of content you want to use. Now you can just skip out on the campaign modes and get to the real Halo action.

Here is what is coming in the first retail update, but the blog post over on Halo Waypoint has a much more thorough explanation of what 343 is planning:

News:: DeNA: 'World of Demons couldn't be done if it wasn't with Platinum'

PlatinumGames' first ever mobile game, World of Demons, was just revealed. (Well, its first mobile game outside of the Japan-only RPG Lost Order.) Both the developer and publisher DeNA have one clear goal with this project: To make this feel like a trademark Platinum action game despite it being on touch controls.

In an interview with DeNA producer Andrew Szymanski, he explains to us how he sort of headhunted Platinum. "I don't believe there's another developer on earth who can do this style of action game," Szymanski tells us. He continues: "Their name being in the credits and their logo being on the startup screen, do I think that will have some impact? Sure. There's a userbase that likes [Platinum's] work. But it's really important that this game stands on its own as a concept. I see the benefit of the collaboration and what they can bring to the table in terms of their development prowess. It's not just about a studio name to me. This game wouldn't exist without Platinum. This game couldn't be done if it wasn't with Platinum."

News:: World of Demons is Platinum's first stab at an action mobile game

If there's one consistent thing that Platinum has proven in the 10 years since it was founded, it's that the Osaka-based studio knows how to make one hell of an action game. For its next project, Platinum is venturing into unknown waters to prove it's the best at action regardless of platform.

As part of a collaborative partnership with DeNA, Platinum is developing a mobile game titled World of Demons. It's a somewhat-traditional take on its Japanese influences, as it features samurai battling yokai (demons and monsters) -- all with a paintbrush strokes contrasted against wood blocks aesthetic. However, even as good as it looks, our time with World of Demons always came back to one point: Platinum found a way to translate its action sensibilities for touch devices.

News:: Persona Dancing titles reveal male cross-dressing DLC along with downloadable Theodore and Lavenza

In an article in Japanese publication Famitsu, Atlus revealed screenshots of two more characters coming to their groovy Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night games. Also featured is some neat cross-dressing gear for the male cast.

Theodore and Lavenza are featured in Persona 5 and Persona 3 respectively as Velvet Room attendants, assisting Igor and the protagonist in the creation of new Personas, as well as doing boring shit like data entry and arranging the cupcakes for staff birthdays. Probably. Either way, they won't be standing aside in the new rhythm-action games, and will be getting their groove on along with everybody else.

Speaking of "everybody else", other pictures in the article show of a range of cross-dressing DLC for the male characters of both games. These include a cute schoolgirl outfit (complete with Lady Ann's hair) for P5's Ryuji, cheerleader gear for P3's Junpei, and P5's Joker in crazy getup that's reminiscent of This is the New Shit-era Marilyn Manson.

P3's protagonist gets a maid's outfit, which is lovely, but there's still no sign of the P3 female protagonist. There's still time for her to show up to the ball before (or after) release, because if one thing's for sure, these games are certainly not shy on the ol' DLC.

News:: PSA: Raikou and Entei distribution events are running this month for Pokemon Sun and Moon

In four days you can grab yourself a shiny (well, we can't really use that turn of phrase freely in Pokemon as it means something completely different) new legendary Raikou or Entei if you're a 3DS Pokemon player.

The distribution event runs from April 22-29, and will be held at Target stores (a change of pace from the typical online distribution or GameStop requirement). All you need is a copy of Pokemon Ultra Sun or Moon for Entei, and Pokemon Sun or Moon (OG) for Raikou. Read: Entei is linked to the Ultra series, and Raikou is exclusive to the original pair of Sun and Moon games.

I'm already imagining lugging my Switch over to a retail location for the next iteration. It'll be fun finding a new use for it!
