News::The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Preview - The Average Gamer

The Average Gamer got hands-on with a mission of The Bureau: XOCM Declassified. Here's what they learned. The Bureau is now a third-person shooter with tactical elements. Set during the 60s, around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US has been building up their defenses, anticipating invasion by the Russian. Instead, the aliens came and the anti-espionage Bureau was forced to change their focus over to alien research.

News::Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 Review |CheatMasters

avoiderdragon (CheatMasters): Traditional FPS players hate them, but campers are always about, ready to ruin your day by killing you with little effort. Lately however, the act of camping is something that games have started to focus on, mainly in games that are about sniping. There are two big titles that do just this, which are Sniper Elite by Rebellion Developments and Sniper: Ghost Warrior by City Interactive. The first one is set in World War II, while the latter is modern era. The sequel to the latter has been released, and most of it is up for your consideration.

It hasnt been an easy couple of years for the XCOM franchise. Back in 2011 the next step in the future of that series was revealed, a FPS that was heavy on the gung-ho and light on the spirit of the original games. After being off the radar for quite a while, that game has re-emerged as The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. And it might just be the updated game that fans wanted in the first place.

News::Freeware Friday: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

BT writes: This week brought us the announcement of Wolfensteins return and as a single-player only game to boot. Of course, Im glad to see a developer put more emphasis on the single-player side of their product than just tacking on a multiplayer mode, especially after the lackluster package that was 2009s Wolfenstein, but it reminded me of the early 2000s when Wolfenstein was the game that all of my friends were playing in the computer lab when the librarian wasnt watching (for some reason, all of the teachers though that if there wasnt a shortcut on the desktop a program didnt exist). Not Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but its multiplayer/pseudo-expansion: Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Fast forward to today when I remembered something very special about Enemy Territory: its completely free. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, developed by Splash Damage, was originally supposed to be a commercially released expansion for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which had come out less th...

From Strategyinformer.com: "In 2010 what should have been celebration for X-Com fans turned to bitterness as they saw their classic strategy series turned into yet another first-person shooter. I mustve been one of the few who thought the new XCOM looked incredibly cool, with its 50s setting and weird X-Files vibe. 2012 however turned the tables - Civilization creators Firaxis faithfully rebooted the strategy series with XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the shooter disappeared. News::Dead Island: Riptide Review | Bag of Games

Josh from Bag of Games writes "Though the initial, tear-inducing launch trailer may have misrepresented exactly what 2011s Dead Island was hoping to accomplish, theres no doubt that Techlands first-person, undead-filled RPG presented a flawed but satisfying blend of melee-heavy zombie slaying and loot-hoarding goodness to anyone willing to overlook its obvious shortcomings. Unsurprisingly, Techland decided to give the sleeper hit series another chance at achieving the sort of acclaim the first installment failed to receive through the release of Dead Island: Riptide: a subtitled sequel introducing not only a brand new tropical location, but also never-before-seen enemy variations and an extra character to decapitate hungry zombies with. However, even with the addition of new features separating this latest entry from its undead-slaughtering predecessor, Dead Island: Riptide may still induce an overwhelming sense of déjà vu upon those who have already experienced all the first gam...

News::CDG: The Decaying of Video Game Movies

"How we gonna get in there? I got two words for you: Im-possible." We've been showering acclaim (or disapproval) on video game franchises such as Tomb Raider, Super Mario Bros, Resident Evil, Far Cry, and Max Payne for decades now. These franchises have been synonymous with the video games industry, and have also been household names for years. Video game franchises that have been entrenched in media ranging from video games, television, music, comic books, and movies. Even your grandmother knows who the legendary plumbers Mario and Luigi are, doesn't she? And if she doesn't, someone will probably remind her after I've published this article. But is legendary really the right adjective? As you may also remember these franchises as hilariously dreadful video game movie spin-offs. Yes! Who could forget how much of an abomination a movie Super Mario Bros was? Awful movies like these have in a span of two hours tarnished franchises that have deep-rooted legacies decades in the making....

We have a soft spot for any game that gives you a different perspective – after all, that’s one of the magical tricks of gaming, implanting empathy through the direct experience – and we’ve already expressed our delight at this simulation of a baby’s experience in a haunted house.

Yet it looks like the developers are going to make the game even more to Edge’s taste. Since we wrote about it, they’ve announced Oculus Rift support which is looking very good indeed.

We’ll update this story with the link to the public alpha when it goes live.
