News:: The 300 Week 12: I Love Robot Smartphone Dogs

Hey there, you mugs, welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my foolish attempt to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. Hopefully there’s something here for you that you can discuss or check out.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

The first Kit Noir Film Festival wrapped up over the weekend, and I managed to see four of the films. Despite a few technical difficulties during one screening, the maiden voyage went well. Next year’s Kit Noir Film Festival will focus on adaptations of Cornell Woolrich, one of the great pulp writers and a damn enjoyable hardboiled prose stylist. The best-known Woolrich adaptation is Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, which seems like a good candidate for the festival’s anchor film. While not film noir in a classic sense, Rear Window is at the very least noir-adjacent, and one of Hitchcock’s best.

It’s back to the grind for the next few weeks as the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival approaches. Tickets are on sale now. Both Jesse Lab and I will be there. I’ve worked out my schedule for the festival, and assuming I don’t burn out, I should be able to pack a month’s worth of movies into just 10 days.

I will probably burn out.

And so, onward.

News:: 'Doom' is the latest game to get a 4K patch on consoles

The next time you venture a little south of Heaven in Doom it'll have an awful lot more Hellish detail. Developer id Software is pushing out an update tomorrow that'll bump the game's resolution pretty dramatically on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X hardware, up to 4K. Doom uses a dynamic resolution scaler (which explains how it can run on the Nintendo Switch), but at the moment the resolution is capped at 1080p. So, while the game currently looks better on PS4 Pro than base PS4 hardware, it's not playing in 4K. Unfortunately, publisher Bethesda's blog post doesn't mention HDR or what frame-rates the game will run at in UHD.

News:: Bandai Namco introduces Soulcalibur fans to Geralt

Two weeks ago we learned that Geralt of Rivia of The Witcher fame was coming to the highly anticipated Soulcalibur VI as another one of their now almost expected crossover characters.

The introduction trailer showed off just a few of his moves but in a video released today by Bandai Namco, the developers of Soulcalibur VI stressed how hard they were trying to accurately portray Geralt while still making him fit into the fighting gameplay.

News:: WipEout Omega Collection is amazing in VR

It's hard to believe today's PlayStation VR update for WipEout Omega Collection is free.

As opposed to some games that support virtual reality across just a subset of the content or in side modes, here, everything is playable with the headset. WipEout HD, Fury, and 2048 are fully supported. The menus and interface have been fine-tuned. Heck, even the mid-race photo mode still works!

There are numerous comfort settings and camera options that you can switch between during races, and certain levels (you can probably guess which) include a warning the first time you play them.

After hearing early buzz about the patch, I made sure to re-download Omega Collection this afternoon and re-experience these games from a fresh point of view. I feel pretty confident calling it one of the best PlayStation VR titles to date, right up there with Resident Evil 7. The cockpit view in VR is so good -- not just to look at, but to play -- that I'll have a tough time going back to the old standard.

If you give this a shot, I'd suggest warming up on one of the less-intense tracks. Even though I rarely feel discomfort in VR any more, it took me a few laps to find my footing. Save Sol for later.

News:: New video series investigates real-life Yakuza game locations

YouTube content creator Noah Ezrin is taking the time to show us just how faithful the Yakuza series is with its recreations of Japanese locales with a new video series.

Filmed in 2016 but just released this week, the "Yakuza Location Tour" kicks off with part one below, highlighting the real life Kabukicho district and how it compares to the fictional zone of Kamurocho -- the franchise's most iconic area. The full playlist with all 43 episodes can be found here.

The short of it? Sega is pretty close to the real thing in almost all cases. Most of the episodes, including the inaugural one below are very brief, so it's worth checking in if you've been to Japan just to see how your memory matches up.

News:: 'Far Cry 5' review: Destruction and doomsday in America

By Daniel Howley

The Far Cry series is known for dropping players into huge, open-world settings and letting them sew chaos and destruction as they take on each title's menacing villain. But those settings and enemies have always been based in largely poor, tropical areas of the world, leading to criticisms of the franchise serving as a tourism simulator gone wrong.

For it's latest entry, Far Cry 5, however, developer Ubisoft Montreal took the tried and true staples of the series -- massive, explorable worlds and sandbox-style gameplay -- and dropped them in the heart of Big Sky Country: Hope County, Montana.

That change in scenery pays off in a big way for Far Cry 5, which is one of the most stunning titles in the franchise to date. It also allowed for the game's creative team to build a story about a doomsday cult building its own outpost in the middle of the U.S. at a time when the country is dealing with a resurgence in white nationalist hate groups.

But while the narrative initially captures your attention with the charismatic cult leader Joseph Seed, it never truly reaches its potential.

News:: Pokemon Go's April 'Community Event' is a bit sheepy

[Header courtesy of PokeWalls]

Pokemon Go is set to have another community day next month for a chance to catch a particularly rare creature. Not following any common theme, sheep Pokemon "Mareep" will be dotting maps on April 15 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm EDT. Along with finally being able to evolve the woolly wonder, Niantic is also giving trainers extra incentives to get out and walk.

All egg incubators will work four times as fast, meaning 10 KM eggs will hatch in 2.5 KM, etc. Lures will also be active for three hours (basically the duration of the event) and any Flaaffy's that get evolved into Ampharos during the event will learn a special move for battle (which is currently not being disclosed). While that last bit isn't really that special, incubators working that much faster is definitely awesome. If only I had that last week on vacation...

News:: Whoa: The Alliance Alive 3DS cover is also a board game!

Atlus is the master of good packaging. I mean, the company is nearly unparalleled, as they're consistently delivering the goods regardless of how impressive individual massive AAA collector's editions might sparingly be.

That includes this cover of Alliance Alive, the recently released RPG from developer Cattle Call. As spotted by Tiny Cartridge, taking out the slip cover tucked away inside reveals an actual board game, with a rule sheet and everything.

It's a simple roll & move joint, but it brings me back to an era of cross-media board game projects -- like the one that came in the VHS tape for the Gargoyles movie (which was actually just a collective of the first several episodes of the TV show).

If you're curious about the game itself, we have a great review for you to read.

News:: Why is Rogue Legacy's follow-up considered a 'pretty massive failure?'

Rogue Legacy took a lot of people, myself included, by surprise. It wasn't perfect, but as a debut title in the roguelike genre, it was a fantastic experience. Naturally, I was excited when the developers at Cellar Door Games announced they were working on another title, Full Metal Furies, even if it was not like Rogue Legacy at all.

I was also excited when I learned that I was going to be the one reviewing the game for the site. I played it, I enjoyed it, and felt that it earned an 8.5 on our review scale. As per usual, I like to see what other critics have thought of the games I reviewed. Turns out, it didn't even have the four required reviews for a Metacritic score. Currently, it has nine. Two months after release, and the follow-up to Rogue Legacy has less than ten reviews.

How could that possibly be?

News:: LEGO The Incredibles is coming out the same day as Incredibles 2

Following that recent flier leak, WB Games has confirmed the next title from TT Games will in fact be LEGO The Incredibles. The game covers scenes from the original film and its upcoming sequel, and it'll be out for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on June 15, the same day Incredibles 2 opens.

Based on the basic game summary, this sounds like a fairly typical LEGO romp complete with two-player co-op. Every member of the Parr family has their own powers, which they can combine, and they'll set off in a hub world to take on "iconic Super Villains that control the city districts."

If you were wondering when a Pixar series would land a LEGO game, well, there you go!

News:: Level-5 was unsure they needed a Japanese version of Ni No Kuni II because 'it was made for the west'

Well this one was a head-scratcher at first.

Speaking to Dengeki PlayStation, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino explained the creative process behind Ni No Kuni II a bit, noting that it was a western game first and foremost, despite the fact that it's heavily rooted in JRPG genre history. Evidently, at least at first, there wasn't even going to be a full Japanese version of the game. Crazy I know, coming from a Japanese development studio, but Hino explains it best:

"At first, Ni no Kuni II was being developed for overseas, and there was a time where we hesitated on whether we should release a Japanese version. Ultimately we ended up making a Japanese version with high motivation. However, entertainment is all about making things for those who say they really like something and give you money for it. The previous title received many awards overseas, and we decided to narrow down the target [for the overseas audience] and that’s why we made its title [Revenant Kingdom] romanized."

So while the game did end up getting a Japanese "localization" as it were, according to Hino, the game was made from the ground up for westerners.

News:: Sea of Thieves is Microsoft's 'most successful' new IP of this generation

Just over a week after launch, Sea of Thieves has become Microsoft's "most successful new IP of this [console] generation," beating out previous titles like Sunset Overdrive, ReCore, and Quantum Break.

"The worldwide excitement for Sea of Thieves has made it the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation," said Rare studio head Craig Duncan. "Having witnessed more than a million players on launch day, our community continues to grow and now has more than two million players. Alongside this, Sea of Thieves is already the best-selling Microsoft Studios first-party title on Windows 10."

According to Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, the fastest-selling first-party new IP milestone for Sea of Thieves "does not include Game Pass numbers," which is a notable distinction. (The service is $10 per month.) He also added that they consider all games published by Microsoft Studios to be first-party.

In his thank-you post, Duncan added that Rare has been listening to players and urged them to "stay tuned for an upcoming update where we will talk about what we have heard from the community and how Sea of Thieves will evolve based on our vision and player feedback."

I'm happy to see the game catch on to this extent and I genuinely hope it doesn't fizzle out.

News:: Next wave of DLC, The War Machine, announced for Call of Duty: WWII

Activison have revealed plans for the next wave of DLC coming to military-shooter Call of Duty: WWII. The batch of additional content, titled The War Machine, will be hitting PS4 next month, with other platforms to follow at a later date.

Those who enjoyed the dog-fighting section of the main game's excellent Battle of the Bulge section will be pleased to know that they'll be taking to the skies once more, with a new aerial-based War Mode. Those who prefer boots on the ground will be pleased to hear new multiplayer maps are coming in the form of Egypt and Dunkirk.

Zombies is also getting some new content in the form of all-new chapter The Shadowed Throne, which sees our all-star cast of rebels journey into the heart of Nazi Germany, to battle more waves of undead creatures and track down the mysterious Doctor Straub.

The War Machine DLC will arrive in Call of Duty: WWII on PS4 April 10. No date has been given for the PC and Xbox One release, but in the past it has usually been around a month later.

News:: Doom's getting a PS4 Pro and Xbox One X patch

Doom is calling my name and I'm tempted to play through the whole thing again. id Software plans to roll out an update for Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro tomorrow that enables 4K support.

This video is about it for details, so we'll have to wait until the patch is live to know more.

Doom is the type of game I could see myself revisiting every few years without ever truly growing tired of it -- the general feel and speed of shooting and bounding through the levels is that good. I wonder if replaying it will make the wait for a sequel easier or harder. Only one way to find out.

News:: What educators think about Apple’s new iPad

Yesterday's Apple event showed that the company wants to make a serious push back into the education sector. This isn't anything new though, according to CEO Tim Cook it's just the company going back to its roots. The centerpiece here is a "new" iPad, a 9.7-inch tablet with Apple Pencil support that aims to woo teachers everywhere. There's also a redesigned iWork suite that lets students doodle and create digital books within Pages, the Schoolwork app for tracking, well, schoolwork, and a kid-friendly tool for coding AR. Apple is hoping that will be enough to win over schools.

News:: Mighty Switch Force 2 among the actual game rewards Nintendo has added to My Nintendo

While we've gotten a few nudges here and there in terms of My Nintendo, it really needs that big push -- Switch support.

We're still not quite there yet after all this time, as Nintendo is still toying with only providing Wii U and 3DS rewards. This week that list includes Fast Racing Neo (Wii U - 11 Gold Points), Mighty Switch Force 2 (3DS - 50 Gold Points), Whoa Dave (3DS - 40 Gold Points), and Star Wars Pinball (3DS - 50 Gold Points).

All four will be listed until May 23, at which point hopefully Nintendo will get its act together and announce Switch rewards right on the eve of E3. Wishful thinking? How about a Virtual Console with My Nintendo rewards? Wishful thinking still? Rats, I guess more Wii U and 3DS it is.

News:: Games with Gold scores another solid month this April

Xbox Live Gold subscribers are in for another solid month this April. Xbox One owners will be treated to Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and The Witness while 360 owners will be given Cars 2 and Dead Space 2 to keep. Remember, all 360 titles offered with Gold are backwards compatible on Xbox One, so you won't need to bust out your old box just to play them.

While Cars 2 is kind of a dud, every other title is worth a look. Hell, Dead Space 2 is great and The Witness is a classic, so April is looking pretty damn great for people that haven't experienced those titles. You'll find the dates for when each game is available below (since Microsoft can't just make it simple).

News:: Sega has 'various things' to show regarding the Shining series at Fes event

Next month Sega will hold their Fes 2018 exhibition in Japan. Many fans are hoping to hear exciting new announcements from the event, with one Producer possibly hinting the reveal of new Shining projects.

Speaking with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Makoto Suzuki, who is spearheading PS3 remake Shining Resonance Refrain, has suggested that the team has ideas to discuss about the future of the franchise.

"We are doing our best to show various things we are working on with the series at Sega Fes in April," said Suzuki. "After this, please look forward to the enjoyable environments we have in the works between traditional games like this one (referring to Shining Resonance Refrain), as well as titles with various other directions".

That's quite the obscure statement. But regardless, it looks like once Refrain sees its launch on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch later this year, there may be new adventures on the horizon for the long-running RPG series. Sega Fes takes place in Akihabra, Tokyo between April 14-15.

News:: April's PS Plus lineup is taking a trip down Fury Road

Any lineup following last month's PS Plus selection was always going to be disappointing, but at least Sony brought two big games into the mix. Starting next week, PS4 gamers will have access to Mad Max and Trackmania Turbo, both of which are pretty solid and worth checking out. Everything else is where it goes downhill.

If you have any love for Q*Bert and his propensity for cursing, steer clear of Q*Bert Reloaded. I bought it on PC during a Winter Sale a few year back for $1 and I thought it was a waste of money. How you can manage to screw up even an arcade ROM is beyond me, but Reloaded is just a terrible game.

The other titles I haven't really heard of, but a quick Google search for each isn't reassuring. I guess having two good PS4 games is enough, though it would have been nice to make the PS3 and Vita's last year on the service more memorable.

News:: Kirby Star Allies' first major update is out with free DLC characters

We have no idea if Nintendo is going to keep making Kirby Star Allies content, but for now, I'm really enjoying the 2.0 update that went live today.

In short, among small visual fixes and the addition of a new celebration puzzle picture, 2.0 adds in new free DLC characters -- Coo, Kine, Rick, Gooey, Marx. Note that the former three (the trio from Kirby's Dream Land 2) are actually one unit, while the latter two are individual characters.

After updating you'll find them available to recruit in various Dream Fortresses in addition to Bandana Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, and King Dedede. Time to start my third playthrough!

News:: Persona planning Sega Fes stage event to promote dancing games and anime

At next month's Sega Fes event in Japan, the Persona team will be hosting a stage event and live-stream to promote the brand's upcoming dancing titles and anime series.

The showcase will features interviews with guests, including members of the respective game's development teams and voice actors. There will also be musical performances from Persona 5's vocalist Lyn Inaizumi. The event is expected to feature news and video from rhythm action games Persona 3: Dancing Moon Night and Persona 5: Dancing Star Night and the anime adaptation of Persona 5.

For those who can't just hop on a train to Tokyo, a stream will be broadcast live from the event. The fun kicks off on April 15 at 17:00 JST. I'm all for new tidbits and details, but if there's a major announcement, like the localisation of the dancing games, or a PC port of... well... anything, then I think my stolen heart will explode.

News:: Riot revamps EU 'League of Legends' circuit to retain pro players

Riot overhauled its North American League of Legends eSports championship to give pros a better reason to stick around, and now it's mounting a similar effort for Europe. The EU division of the League Championship Series has instituted a slew of reforms that should ensure more sustainable careers, most notably an end to relegation and promotion. There was a lot of turnover when teams knew they could fall from grace -- this lets them spend more time and money on players to create "lasting connections" with fans. In other words, a rookie with promise won't get cut just because their team had a rough first season.

News:: If Nintendo isn't going to port Super Mario Maker to Switch, at least we'll have PlataGO! Super Platform Game Maker

PlataGO! Super Platform Game Maker, which is currently in early access on PC, has a generational-sprawling feel to it. While it has a distinct Euro-platformer look it also sprots several aesthetic alterations, one of which is a straight-up recreation of the Game Boy era.

It makes sense then that the project is going to be expanded to consoles -- and this week publisher PQube announced that PlataGO! will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch in addition to PC later this year.

Switch users in particular might flock to this, seeing as Nintendo isn't keen on moving over Super Mario Maker just yet from the Wii U and 3DS.

News:: Donald Glover tweets entire screenplay for his Deadpool TV show

FX and Donald Glover were going to make an animated Deadpool TV show, until they weren't. The abrupt cancellation of the the show's production was a bit of a head scratcher as Deadpool is pretty hot right now, as is Glover himself, and FX doesn't shy away from doing different things (see Legion). All FX said was that creative differences caused the split, but some speculated that Glover may have been too busy with his myriad of other projects to truly put together the show. Well, Donald Glover does not take kindly to fools spreading rumors about him and has thus released the entire script for the "final" episode of the Deadpool cartoon. Kind of...

Obviously, this is more of a joke than anything, but it's pretty hilarious one. Who knows how much of it was actually from an episode, but the riff on the show's "cancellation" is fantastic. In fact, the entire gag of Tweeting out an episode that comments on its non-existence is the most Deadpool thing to do and makes me sad Glover won't be making the animated series because he clearly gets it.

News:: Broly & Bardock bring the pain to Dragon Ball FighterZ today

Today will see the first roster additions to Namco Bandai's hugely-successful Dragon Ball FighterZ. The first of what is intended to be several waves of DLC features new characters Broly and Bardock.

The mammoth-sized Broly predictably chooses a slower, up-close-and-personal fighting style, although rumblings from those who have already gotten their hands on the Super Saiyan suggest that his damage output isn't quite on the level you'd expect from such a behemoth.

Bardock appears to be much-more of a solid all-rounder, with normals akin to that of his family members. Bardock utilises the element of surprise, having fast start-up on his specials and a Super that dashes-in from long-range, closing the gap on opponents quickly.

You can check out the launch trailer below to see the guys in action in the Arc System Works fighter, which launched at the end of January to praise from fans and critics alike.

News:: Harvest Moon: Light of Hope will arrive on PS4/Switch with co-op, a season pass, and a new character

Like a lot of Harvest Moon or Harvest Moon tangential simulators these days, Light of Hope was released on PC in late 2017 to a mixed response, but ended up settling on "mostly positive" on Steam eventually.

A lot of you probably skipped out on this one, and that patience is paying off as Natsume has announced what the upcoming PS4 and Switch special editions entail -- co-op, a new character named Soleil, and a season pass with more DLC.

Note that said co-op actually involves the other player taking control of Soleil, a "Gem Sprite," that allows them to "grow crops, tend livestock, and gather materials." As for the DLC, the season pass will cover "four pieces of content," which haven't been detailed yet. Light of Hope: Special Edition launches in May for $39.99 on PS4 and Switch, and will also have a separate SKU dedicated to a collector's edition.
