News::PCGMedia - Defiance review

Defiance, as it stands, is a stunningly uninteresting game; cynically cashing in on the popularity of popularized sci-fi games like Borderlands 2 in order to tempt gamers to purchase premium bolt-on content and XP boosts. It is another example of a developer ticking all the boxes, offering the minimum, and throwing together something marketable. This wouldnt be such a bad thing if the game were any good.

News::Animales de la Muerte lives on as a mobile game

Remember High Voltage Software's Animales de la Muerte ? Originally one of the most promising-sounding titles for the then-new WiiWare service, it stewed in limbo for a few years before dropping WiiWare and becoming an XBLA / PSN game instead. Two more years went by and... nothing. Nothing until now, that is.

Good news: The game is not canceled and is set to launch in two weeks. Bad news: It's no longer a console title but a mobile release. Worst news: It's been completely overhauled to the point that it no longer resembles the original concept, and it's been renamed Zoombies -- Animales de la Muerte is the subtitle. It now looks more like Plants vs. Zombies, even if doesn't necessarily play the same. The main characters can't even move anymore!

It could be a good game, but I want to know what the hell happened. Anybody at HVS willing to share that story? In the meanwhile, Animales de... I'm sorry... Zoombies: Animales de la Muerte will arrive on iOS devices on April 18 with an Android version set to appear next month.

Editor Joe Morgan writes, "Defiance. Its rare that such an ambitious project comes along. No, this isnt a game based on the 2008 historical drama starring Daniel Craig. Defiance was designed as a third-person shooter MMO. Even more impressive is its union with the Syfy channels upcoming show of the same name that aims to unite two completely separate forms of media television and video games. News::MTB: The ever-shifting horror world of Daylight [Preview]

MTB: A well-lit show floor filled with thousands of people may not be the best place to try to immerse yourself in a horror game, but Zombie Studios still did a good job with their new title, Daylight. The game promises to be a procedurally generated horror experience; a huge idea if they can pull it off. Familiarity ruins a horror experience, so a second play through or even just another run through an area you died in wont be scary in the slightest. Youve already seen it all before, so theres nothing to surprise or shock you. Daylight is striving to change your experience every time.

News::Bioshock Infinite Review | Games Fiends

Games Fiends writes: "Bioshock Infinite is the type of game that comes along maybe once in a generation it is the pinnacle of storytelling in gaming. The yardstick that all others should be measured by. The game is not perfect. The middle third of the game almost drags it down. That said these flaws stand out because the rest of the game is just so excellent. I cant begin to convey how essential Bioshock Infinite is to gamers. Not just to those that buy it and play it. No. Bioshock Infinite will hopefully pave the way for better stories and storytelling. Like many great books, movies, plays etc Bioshock Infinite asks lots of questions. Presents the player with uncomfortable truths. It doesnt then spoon feed you every answer."

Elizabeth is a wonderfully written character whose interaction with protagonist Booker DeWitt forms the core of BioShock Infinites tale and is all the better for it. News::Warren Spector: AAA innovation will inevitably be limited

No one is going to dispute that the entire Epic Mickey franchise was the Matterhorn of unrealized potential. How much of that was due to developer Junction Point Studio's lofty ambitions versus Disney's demands and constraints, I couldn't say. I will say that the Junction Point team was filled with highly talented individuals, such as studio co-founder Warren Spector. Having spent a day at Magic Kingdom with the man, I can vouch that his passion is 100% genuine.

It wasn't hard to feel bad for Spector when Junction Point shuttered following poor sales of Epic Mickey 2. Legally unable to publicly discuss the matter until after April 1, he finally spilled the beans in an interview with GamesIndustry International. In addition to talking about his experience working under Disney's wing, he also hinted towards his future game development plans and expressed apprehension towards working on AAA projects anytime soon.

Surprisingly, Spector doesn't bear any deep grudge against his former employer and is rather grateful that he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of working for Disney. Despite not quite understanding the tangled bureaucracy of one of the biggest media companies in the world -- "I've learned that I don't play politics very well, that's for sure, and I'm not great with bosses, generally" -- he doesn't regret his initial decision to sell Junction Point to the House of Mouse. But that doesn't mean that working on two massive AAA titles with equally massive teams didn't take its toll.

News::BioShock Infinite Review | Saving Content

Excerpt: "When is the big twist coming? is a question I kept asking myself while playing BioShock Infinite. After playing 2007s BioShock, you undoubtedly have to go into BioShock Infinite with the expectation that there will be a revelatory twist at any moment. Whether that actually comes or not, isnt what makes Infinite special. It is a surprisingly bloody, yet bold, and incredibly lavish and fully realized world that is aching to have you explore everything to its fullest extent. Even if you question eating that hotdog from the garbage. BioShock Infinite is exemplary in the telling of its narrative, character development, the beautiful yet unbelievable city that has been built out of Comstocks dreams. It does exactly what BioShock did for games, is what Infinite does again. Thats igniting conversations regarding the ending, the hidden meanings, and is a great book-end for this current generation of games. News::How a tiny indie studio got noticed by PlayStation

It's obvious Sony is going all out by getting all of the indie game makers they can. They've been getting all sorts of developers on board for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and especially the PlayStation 4. Most of the games we've seen announced for Sony's platforms have been by indie studios we're familiar for the most part, but that's not enough for Sony.

They're even courting the super tiny indie guys, like Muteki Corporation, the makers behind the first Dragon Fantasy and the upcoming Dragon Fantasy II . The original Dragon Fantasy was in development for years, going through a dozen iterations before being dropped.

The game was seemingly done until the creator of the series, Adam Rippon, father passed away. Adam would then go on to rework the game to star his father, and after the first of his homages to retro role-playing titles was released, he would go on to work on the upcoming sequel.

Much to my disappointment, I discovered that the level 25 Terrible Turnip that I dropped 10,000 gold on couldnt be added to my journal because I didnt have an existing level 25 pet in my journal. With four campaigns, multiple playable characters, Mercenaries mode and the all-new Agent Hunt feature, RE6 is positively ripe with content. Gone are the days of puzzle solving in an eerie atmosphere. Now, its all about cinematic action and ultra-linear level design. News::Review: Tactical Intervention

[This post originally ran as impressions on the open beta and is now updated to reflect the full release, which came two weeks later.]

Call of Duty has dumbed down the modern shooter to being about planting bombs, capturing points, and getting headshots. In contrast, Tactical Intervention is a breath of fresh air and feels evolutionary in its ideas -- one could say next-gen, but it'd be hard not to laugh when looking at its budget production values. Dog barks sound like Doom imps and the visuals somehow look worse than anything in Half-Life 2, despite having all the niceties that have come to the Source engine since '04.

Before Call of Duty fever swept the nation, I loved online first-person shooters for the chaos that car combat and hostage encounters can bring. I'll never forget surfing on an airplane wing in Battlefield 1942 or using hostages as human shields in a pitch dark cs_mansion in Counter-Strike.

Tactical Intervention brings back the good memories before FPS were marketable to the mainstream, along with reminders that mods like Counter-Strike weren't born with that layer of polish later achieved.

News::Bioshock Infinite Review | Nerdluster

Nerdluster: BioShock Infinite is a complete and compelling game with a riveting story that promises a "shocking" ending, I can say that it does indeed deliver on those promises. The mystery & intrigue of Ken Levine's writing is still a hallmark of Irrational's many varied games and as such it is a wonder to play through Infinite whether it's your first time or your fifth. It can be said though that this is a game that is much too ambitious especially for a studio that may want to capitalize further on this an award winning series. In wrapping up BioShock Infinite you may find that all of your questions about this "universe" are answered . If this was Irrational's ingenious way to finally leave the BioShock series behind they may have made it possible through the Infinite's ending. It finishes the story arc so much that I can't imagine what sort of DLC they have worked up for the Season Pass they've been selling.

Well I spoke with the series creator Adam Rippon during PAX East and he told me the original game is heading to both of Sony's platforms as well. Dragon Fantasy is expected to run $10, will have cross-buy and cross-save features, and there's a new 16-bit skin added to all the visuals. There will be an option to switch to the original visuals of the game too.
