News::Upcoming Free-To-Play Survival MMOFPS In Need Of Alpha Testers

The highly anticipated free-to-play survival MMOFPS based loosely around STALKER 2, Survarium, is crying out for alpha testers to help move the game to the next level. The game has already developed a large following due to its heavy focus on survival and instinct over that of typical twitch shooters, but the developers need the aid of players to help the game progress and become the top quality product they want to release.

News::Review: Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 | Stevivor.com

Reviewer Steve Wright writes, "Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is a conundrum of a game. You know all those tense moments in titles like Call of Duty or Battlefield, where youve got to sit high up in a snipers nest and control yourself enough to land that one amazing shot? Well, imagine an entire game of just that. On one hand, its an exercise in patience and trial-and-error and on the other, it might be plain old tedium. How you approach the game is entirely up to you, provided you can look past Ghost Warrior 2s flaws. "I couldnt, for the most part."

News::Hit-Reset Review: Evoland

Hit-Reset.co.uk's Gavin Robertson writes... "Nostalgia is a powerful weapon in gaming, and if wielded correctly can bring both kudos and cash in to a developer. Indie developer Nicolas Cannasse seized on this concept when building Evoland for a Ludum Dare competition last year. Ludum Dare is a community of designers who make games quickly, usually over a single weekend, based on a concept suggested by the community. Cannasses efforts won him first prize, alongside a ton of praise for the idea, so he set about fleshing the idea out with his studio, Shiro Games. The result is a fantastically cute title, steeped in nostalgic charm, that will surely resonate with a very specific slice of gamers."

News::Dying indie developer needs your donations to survive

Chloe Sagal developed indie horror title Homesick but may never develop another game again, as she faces a fatal dose of metal poisoning that may kill her in a couple months if she doesn't have surgery. You can help change this by contributing to her Indiegogo page that is currently $10,000 shy of meeting its goal with 31 days to go.

In her Indiegogo post, Sagal candidly details her current state: collapsing at school, hospital visits, lack of financial support, and struggling to work while doctors tell her she has months to live, not years. With no family support (she says they refuse to support her because her "lifestyle choice" [e.g. she told her mom that she isn't straight]), she needs all the community help she can get:

My time frame for surviving this has lowered from a few years to a few months, with loss of many basic functions due to arrive prior to my passing. I don't have time to futz with the system, right now I just need to get this thing out of me. I am a strong and independent woman, I can handle almost anything myself, but I'm setting this aside, because I do not want to die from this. I never wanted to resort to just donations (as opposed to asking for donations from people who've enjoyed my work), but it's clear that this is the best option I have right now.

News::Looks Like Somebody Is Already Playing Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

News::The first Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon video has arrived

This morning we learned through more leaks that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will be a standalone downloadable title, with an open-world setting, and will have a very heavy '80s vision of the future featuring actor Michael Biehn.

Now even more leaks have occurred, this time involving actual video gameplay thanks to Stick Skills. How someone already got their hands on Blood Dragon to do a video commentary I have no idea. What I do know is that I want this more and more with each "leak."

Part of my is wondering why Ubisoft has yet to officially announced Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Then again, they don't need to hype it up any since we're doing that enough on our own.

News::Retro City Rampage dev's Microsoft horror story

After a shaky relationship that put his career and game on the line, Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano joins Jonathan Blow and Team Meat in talking mess about Microsoft.

After developing RCR for over four years, Microsoft cancelled the Xbox Live Arcade release due to Provinciano publicly stating his issues with the process, Provinciano told Wired. Perhaps this was written in some contract and Microsoft wasn't out of line, but that is much harder to hold on to after what came next.

Provinciano says Microsoft made him go through a long approvals process to get the game back in the pipeline, what followed was an extra six months of negotiations and Microsoft tasked him with hunting down an outside publisher. Not exactly a warm relationship but that's the game industry. It's the last part that is the most damning: When Microsoft released the game, they priced it at $10 instead of $15. Provinciano was told this was a mistake.

On a positive note, Provinciano has found a friend in Sony and PlayStation Network: “Sony’s been incredibly supportive and promoted the game very well. It’s received a generous amount of promotion at no cost to me, from [advertisements] on the PS Store to events such as E3 and even having it playable on kiosks at every Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Future Shop across North America.”

News::Miyamoto explains why Luigi is green and more

GameSpot? Time? New York Times? And now Rolling Stone? Everyone wants a piece of Shigeru Miyamoto! If he's so willing to speak to anyone and everyone, why hasn't he spoken to us yet? We need to arrange a pow-wow as soon as possible!

Though Rolling Stone's feature is titled "Shigeru Miyamoto Shares Nintendo Secrets," a lot of the information within is stuff we are already familiar with. There's talk of "The Year of Luigi" and both released and upcoming games like Nintendo Land, Luig's Mansion: Dark Moon, and Pikmin 3. I guess this is a more of a primer for the magazine's gamer-lite audience than any hard-hitting investigation into the mind of Nintendo's ageless wonder.

Nevertheless, the are a few nuggets that you might not have heard previously, such as the reason why Luigi is green. While developing the original Mario Bros. arcade game, the team ran into technical problems: "One of those constraints was that because of memory limitations, the second character had to be identical to the first character in appearance. And so we looked at that and said, 'Well even if we have the same character, we could potentially change the color of the character.' But again we were limited in the color palettes -- we didn't have much in the way of additional colors that we could use. And so we looked at the turtles in that game. Their heads are sort of skin-toned, their shells are green, so what we could do is we could use the color palette from the turtle on this character." So Luigi was green because the "Shellcreepers" were green, and since he and Mario looked the same, "[o]bviously they must be twins."

Hit the link below to find other tidbits, such as how Miyamoto used Flipnote Studio on DSi to draft pre-game intro movies.

News::Shroud of the Avatar pulls in more than $2 million

Designer Richard Garriott and Portalarium's Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues ended its Kickstarter drive this weekend. It was a success, though we've known it would be for a while now.

The role-playing game doubled its base funding goal of $1 million by bringing in $1,919,275 on Kickstarter and an additional $150,000 and counting through its official site. "We will be listening to [backers] as we go about making the kind of fantasy RPG that I really enjoyed making in the earlier part of my career," said Garriott. "But this is really only the start. We will continue to keep our own crowd funding store open to bring in more funds to help us add even more features to the game."

$2 million might sound like a lot, but it isn't for a game of this scope. Heck, Shroud of the Avatar isn't expected to launch until next year, to put things in perspective. Did you support this one?

News::Mode 7 devs show off Frozen Synapse for iPad

What do you get when you take a popular turn-based indie title and try to bring all of its charm to iPads? You get the latest iteration of Frozen Synapse , from the fine folks over at Mode 7 Games. Don't worry good followers of Android, the devs are working on releasing your version shortly after the iPad version.

Frozen Synapse challenges players to eliminate the opposition through effective planning and utilizing the environment to your advantage. It's clear from the above demonstration that Mode 7 Games put a lot of effort into condensing the UI to better suit the iPad, but that's not they added. The most interesting new addition to the game is cross-platform play across Windows/Mac/Linux, iPad and Android devices. As mentioned in the video, being able to play your PC friends from the comfort and security of your company's bathroom stall on your iPad opens up a whole new world of gaming possibilities.

Mode 7 Games has also stated the Red DLC will be making its way to mobile version; as well as being able to start a game on one device and then pick it up on another or your PC. I've been looking to add more turn-based games to my gaming diet, and I think that Frozen Synapse will surely hit the spot.

News::Developers told Sony to change DualShock 4 controller

Sony put the future of the DualShock 4 in the hands of developers, who dictated changes to the longstanding controller's form and feel. Guerrilla Games (Killzone ) and Evolution Studios (DriveClub ), in an interview with Edge , discussed the pivotal role they played in encouraging Sony to make changes.

Prior to consultation, the DualShock 4 had outwardly curved triggers, the thumbsticks weren't indented, and it relied on accelerometers instead of high-frequency gyros (mmm, delicious). None of these are jaw-dropping changes, but they all contribute to a controller that feels right. As even a great-looking controller can make for a miserable experience if it gets in the way of gaming.

"[Early DualShock 4 prototypes] looked like something that Bruce Wayne would carry," Evolution's technical director Scott Kirkland said, in an Edge interview. "It was very industrial in design, plastic, [and] there were things that would come off. I remember seeing paperwork for the import and export prototype, and you know all of them were handmade and insanely expensive and we felt privileged to be getting these samples."

News::Blizzard buys rights to the IGN Pro League

Blizzard has purchased the rights, assets, and technology behind the IGN Pro League, boosting its existing eSports team for further coverage of Blizzard games.

After the sudden cancellation of the IPL 6 event back in March, the future of the IGN Pro League was uncertain, but the Blizzard deal ensures that it will continue, moving over to become part of the developer’s eSports team.

Blizzard has sponsored eSports events before, most notably the 2012 Battle.net World Championship, where it gave away $100,000 to the winner – one of the biggest prizes in eSports at the time. However, the tournament didn’t receive as many viewers as some third-party sponsored events like Major League Gaming or the League of Legends Championship Series.

Following the release of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, it seems Blizzard is increasing its commitment to eSports. The IPL originally featured games from many different publishers, but it’s unclear whether Blizzard will focus primarily on their own games or allow others in their tournaments. We’ve contacted Blizzard for more detail.

Firmly sat as a mainstay of the EA Sports offerings and giving us all an annual iteration of the most played golf game in the world on all formats. Iteration is of course the key word here as there have been no leaps and bounds within the Tiger franchise for some years now. Sadly the suits at EA threw out the idea of an open world cocktail waitress banging GTA style golf simulation in favour of something far more traditional. eGamer writes: "Evoland is a fantastic advert for indie gaming. Its exactly why I love supporting indie and being so personally involved in it. The game is creative, charming, quirky, unique, highly entertaining and wonderfully nostalgic, and it really is a joy to play and experience. Ultimately it will be old-school adventure fans or those who appreciate creativity and innovation that will find the most to love here, and there truly is a lot to love. Furthermore, a great part of what makes it an exciting prospect is that its concept of evolution has the potential to be expanded and taken to other genres or contexts, which would be awesome to see. For now, however, Evolands is a stand-out title, and an absolute must-play."

News::Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon allegedly not a 360 exclusive

If a recent XBLA listing and multiple platform registration notice is to be believed, the mysterious Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon expansion will not be an Xbox exclusive, and will be also heading to the PS3 and PC on May 1st, 2013.

Although Ubisoft hasn't officially confirmed the game yet, it appears as if a ton of info has been revealed, namely the fact that the game will take place in an open-world, host an "80's VHS vision of the future," and will feature actor Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, and more).

With the online features listed as "Leaderboards," it looks like it won't have multiplayer support, and the game itself will be a completely separate download and not require Far Cry 3 proper (again, if this listing is accurate).

This...sounds absolutely amazing.

PCGMedia dissect EA's Peter Moore's statement regarding the 'Worst Company in America' award. They offer insight as to exactly what is wrong with EA, and why Moore's reasoning is offensive, illogical, and counter productive. Do statistics carry the same weight as a "vocal minority?" And does the success of a 'product' define the quality of a game? Where are EA going wrong, and could it be they simply need to take bigger risks? Why are they merging sub-genres, and letting fans of their small games down?

No, it will never get old. NEVER.

OverClocked ReMixer Joshua Morse has organized a jazz-electronica fusion celebration of Namco's Ridge Racer series. He was assisted by a pair of fine young gentlemen with wonderful first names, Anthony Lofton and Anthony Morgan, and fellow remixer halc also contributed a tasty chiptune track. News::Thatgamecompany’s next game will change the industry, says departing game designer

Former Thatgamecompany game designer Asher Vollmer believes that the Journey studio’s new game could “change the industry in a really positive way.”

Vollmer has left the developer to pursue smaller, more personal game projects, and revealed on his tumblr that although he believes Thatgamecompany’s new game will be important, working on the title left him unhappy and frustrated.

“The New Game they’re making isn’t just something that you can casually abandon,” said Vollmer. “Obviously I can’t divulge any details about it, but… It’s going to be huge. And I don’t mean it’s going to be a long sprawling game, I mean it’s going to be an IMPORTANT game. I genuinely believe it’s going to change the industry in a really positive way.”

“All of this just made the decision [to leave] harder, but the fact of the matter is that I was unhappy,” he added. “I started out loving my job, but as the months wore on and progress continued at a snail’s pace, I started getting more and more frustrated.”

As a leading videogame publisher Activision gets a very bad rap from the core audience. Using their big name projects to finance the more debatable releases, one would have thought that their commercial releases to fund titles for the core audience wouldve been exactly what gamers wanted. However, it seems that rarely do this audience know whats good for them, and thats exactly the case with The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

News::Yarg! Chip Ship is a chip-piano mashup for pirates

Last year, French composer Yoann Turpin released his very first album, Rhythm'n'Bits . It straddled a few lines by incorporating both chip sounds and live instruments for a funk-fusion style inspired by 16-bit RPGs. For his follow-up, Chip Ship , he hangs up the sword and shield, hoists the ol' Jolly Roger, and sets sail on a seafaring journey.

Yoann once again weaves chiptune, FM synth, and piano together, sending the listener to various islands each represented by a different song. But though the hero of this aural adventure may be a pirate, his bountiful booty is not free for all to plunder. You can download Chip Ship from Bandcamp for €7 (~$8.96) or Amazon for $7.99.
