News::Retro City Rampage Wii out Feb 28, includes prototype ROM

Retro City Rampage Wii out Feb 28, includes prototype ROM screenshot

Retro City Rampage for WiiWare missed its January release window, but creator Brian Provinciano has set his foot down and stated that the game will finally arrive next week on February 28. RCR's entire development history has been a long string of delays, so that's not too surprising. It's just ironic that the Wii was one of the first announced platforms but will end up being the last to receive the open-world nostalgia bomb.

But Brian appreciates Wii owners' patience and has decided to make the wait worth their while. In addition to being $10 versus $15 on other platforms as well as compatibility with every single Wii controller configuration, RCR on WiiWare will also include "ROM City Rampage," the game's original prototype ROM before development shifted to from NES to PC. It's essentially Grand Theftendo minus the GTA3 references, and it's 100% NES hardware-accurate!

Those who own RCR on Steam will also have access to "ROM City Rampage," which will be available as a free update day and date with the WiiWare version. Sounds like a pretty cool gift! I'm looking forward to checking it out!

News::Sony talks about possibly re-releasing PS3 games for PS4

Sony talks about possibly re-releasing PS3 games for PS4 screenshot

In an interview with Eurogamer, SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida spoke about the possibility of upgraded PlayStation 3 games that would run on PlayStation 4, similar to what we've seen with all of the HD re-release compilations during this current console generation.

"...Beyond is a big PS3 game loads of people want to play, and The Last Guardian is something I really want to play -- I want to play them on the new console," stated Eurogamer. "Because once that new console comes out, I'm going to move the PS3 to a different part of the room, you know what I mean? So is it something you've talked about?"

To which Yoshida replied: "Yes, so, we've been making some of our PS2 games available upgraded and published on PS3, and in some cases like God of War or Shadow of the Colossus, some people say this is the better version of the original game, so something like that, we find it very satisfying from a development standpoint, and those who create original titles are thrilled to see more people playing their games, because of the update. So I think for some games it will make sense for us to look at, but we are not talking about any more about our titles other than the four titles."

Are there any PlayStation 3 games you would want to get this treatment? Perhaps it will make more sense in a few years, but right now, I don't suspect the initial gap in visual quality to be quite the drastic leap that PS2 to PS3 was. While not the same thing as a remastered game -- I feel like two different concepts were being discussed here -- it would be nice to have applicable PS3 games (like The Last Guardian ) launch simultaneously on both PS3 and PS4 as well.

News::How PS4 Could Overpower a More Powerful PC

E-mpire writes: Some have criticized Sony for abandoning the exotic, custom processors they have usually used in their PlayStation consoles for more standardized "off the shelf" PC parts. They have drawn up comparisons with how much money it would take to buy an equally powerful PC and how capable that PC, and therefore assuming PS4, is using benchmark software. These comparisons are not valid, and this is not a disadvantage for Sony. I'll explain why.

News::Monster Hunter 3 3DS can go online via Wii U workaround

Monster Hunter 3 3DS can go online via Wii U workaround screenshot

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will allow online play on the Wii U version. The 3DS version, on the other hand, is restricted to local play. But if you reeeeeaaaaaally reeeeeaaaaaaally want to take the 3DS game online, it will be possible through a rather convoluted workaround.

During a Japan-exclusive, third-party Nintendo Direct held earlier today, a solution involving the Wii U and a regular ol' Wii LAN adapter was discussed. By plugging in the adapter and installing a packet relay tool, you can hit the net by sort of tricking the system into thinking you are playing the Wii U version. Unfortunately, you won't be able to play a Wii U copy at the same time (remember, cross-platform play is normally allowed), and you can't create lobbies but only join those set up by other Wii U players. But at least you'll be online!

It makes me wonder why the 3DS game didn't have online capabilities from the get-go. The original Wii version had it as do the Wii U version and the upcoming Monster Hunter 4. In any case, this method has only been announced for Japan thus far, though it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to release the relay tool elsewhere.

News::StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm's eSports tools detailed

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm's eSports tools detailed screenshot

Blizzard's Community Manager Kevin Johnson detailed some of the new eSports and multiplayer features fans can expect in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm . New tools include the ability to watch match replays in groups, and a new custom interface for eSports tournaments or video casters that lets them dictate how information is presented.

Players can also watch a reply, and then jump into the replay they're watching to play through the match again. The biggest new feature, though, is the ability to pick up a match from any point in the event of some kind of power failure or connection issue. No more having to start a match all over again, something that's crucial when it comes to tournaments with prize money on the line.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm will be out on the PC March 12, 2013.

New Monster Hunter 4 trailer puts an axe in yo' face screenshot

Capcom has uploaded a fresh trailer for Monster Hunter 4, so that is a thing that you can watch. It's got hunters. It's got monsters. It's got hunters hunting monsters. It's got everything.

Poor excuses for jokes aside, the coolest part about this footage is that it shows off one of the newest weapons to the series: the Charge Axe. Somewhat similar to the Switch Axe introduced in Monster Hunter 3, the Charge Axe can alternate between axe mode and sword mode. While in sword mode, the axe "blade" is detached and used as a shield. In action, it looks pretty badass.

MH4 is still on track for a summer 2013 release in Japan. We'll get our turn eventually.

News::First three Metal Gear Rising DLC packs detailed

First three Metal Gear Rising DLC packs detailed screenshot

As if Metal Gear Rising wasn't packed with enough content already, we now have word on a few extra bits of content heading to the game at some point in the future.

First, there's confirmation of a side-scrolling beat 'em up VR mission that has Raiden going full fisticuffs, in addition to a Dwarf Gekko-centric mission.

The next bit is a DLC weapon called the "Soul Snake Wooden Sword," that has the soul of Solid Snake embedded in it, and speaks Snake's voice when you use it (crazy!) -- it'll come with the VR Mission pack.

Lastly, there seem to be two extra missions involving a playable Sam, one of the main antagonists of the game, and another involving the Bladewolf, Raiden's trusty robot sidekick.

Right now there is no word on whether or not this is PS3 exclusive like the select VR Mission DLC. If you're having trouble with the core game still, check out my guide!

News::First look at Diablo III running on PlayStation 3

First look at Diablo III running on PlayStation 3 screenshot

Blizzard announcing Diablo III for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 was one of the true surprises of yesterday's event for the new console, I think we can agree. In a blog post, Blizzard says it "will be based on the core PC game and feature all the latest updates, including Paragon levels, the Infernal Machine event, Monster Power, Brawling, and more."

Continuing, the company explains: "This version is also being tailored with customized controls, a new user interface, and a dynamic camera perspective..." Four-person online multiplayer with matchmaking and local co-op for up to four players has also been confirmed.

While I have absolutely no intention of buying Diablo III again, I am beyond curious to see how the game transfers over to consoles and what features that were added post-PC-launch actually make the cut. And, for that matter, how about that real-money auction house?

News::Rockman Xover going to Android, accepting boss designs

Rockman Xover going to Android, accepting boss designs screenshot

[Custom boss by Heat Man]

According to various hands-on impressions, we certainly dodged a bullet when Capcom decided to hold off on localizing Rockman Xover. Nonetheless, the free-to-play social title continues unabated in its native Japan, indicating that it must be somewhat successful. I'm honestly quite impressed by Capcom's perseverance -- the company has given this moldy cheese more attention than anything else Mega Man in the last couple of years.

Capcom is bringing the Xover love to Android devices at some point in the near future. In addition, a boss creation contest has been kicked off on Nico Nico Seiga, the art community subsection of the Japanese video sharing site Nico Nico Douga. Through the end of March, users can submit their designs; the winner will have his or her boss included in the game and will also receive a "Battle Memory" card of the boss plus other special in-game cards. Three runners-up will have their designs transformed into "Battle Memory" and also receive special cards, while 21 others will just receive a set of special cards.

Capcom's boss design contests have always been one of the coolest parts about the Mega Man series, even though they are typically restricted to Japanese residents. Xover still looks and smells like ass, but it's cool that Capcom is running this competition.

News::PS4: developers react

It was, of course, simply a precursor to E3 designed to build anticipation for a more in-depth showcase, but Sony’s PS4 reveal was notable for its generous doling out of revelations and game footage. As a result, the company appears to have won over game developers with its savvy, if not necessarily catchy, pitch. Reaction online has inevitably been more mixed, but the general feeling among those who will be creating games for PS4 is that Sony is making all the right noises and, more importantly, fixing past ills.

“It was very encouraging to hear the developer- and consumer-friendly messaging,” says Eidos life president and UKIE board member. “Dumping the Cell processor and moving to a PC architecture with an X86-based CPU with 8GB super-fast system memory is great news for developers, and promises lightning-speed performance.

“The ‘Share’ button should be well-liked by gamers wanting to show off their realtime game footage with their friends. What we don’t know, and need to know soon, is how much will it cost, and the European street date. But overall it was a very positive announcement by Sony and should give everybody a great reason to go to E3 this year.”

Super Stardust and Dead Nation developer Housemarque was a huge advocate for PSN and Sony hardware in the current generation, and, as company CEO Ilari Kuittinen tells us, will continue to be so in the next.

“It was great to hear how focused Sony was on games during the PlayStation 4 announcement,” he says. “The new console sounds really developer friendly, and we believe that this time the console transition is much easier for many developers as you’re probably able to use a lot of your existing technology and tools instead of writing everything from the scratch.

“Having 16 times more memory than PlayStation 3 is also very helpful, and the extra horsepower the machine has can be used for creating new kinds of gameplay experiences that weren’t possible during the previous generation. We’re certainly looking forward to creating awesome challenges for the PlayStation 4 in the future.”

Frontier Developments founder David Braben was similarly impressed, though he criticised Sony’s decision to keep the actual hardware hidden away.

“It was exciting to watch the rollout of PS4 last night, and great to see Sony’s emphasis on developer support too,” he says. “Lack of pricing information is not unexpected at this stage, but I’m quite surprised they didn’t show a version of the box itself – psychologically it feels wrong, and more importantly it makes evangelism for the machine in the media harder.”

From all the coverage today, Sony’s clearly not wanting for column inches. Though Braben’s concerns make sense, the major revision of the hitherto gently iterated Dual Shock controller probably offers enough iconic imagery for now.

Futurlab managing director James Marsden’s highlighted Sony’s apparently more open ethos for its new hardware – an ethos in stark contrast to the more locked-down strategies of its past.

“I thought Sony’s change of attitude toward their platform was most refreshing,” he says. “When PS3 launched, Sony’s firstparty publishing wouldn’t entertain the idea of funding 2D games on the system, let alone quirky indie games. Fortunately that attitude appears to have radically shifted, and bringing Jonathan Blow on stage to talk about his new game was very exciting.

“We’ve obviously benefitted from a great deal of support from PlayStation for our indie efforts, but the message has never taken centre stage like that before. It’s great to see. The support was pretty strong from third parties too; I sensed that those in console game production really want PS4 to succeed, ourselves included.”

As a result, he tells us, FuturLab will be registering for a PS4 licence today. Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen, however, is in less of a rush, but was similarly taken with Blow’s appearance.

“I didn’t even realize [the PlayStation Meeting] was happening till long after it was, if that says anything,” he admits, “And the only thing I saw of interest was The Witness. I thought that was a smart move on their part to get a timed exclusive for it because that games going to be a big one.

“Other than that its not something I’m super-excited about – if it turns out to be hugely popular ill develop for it. Honestly, all the new systems probably aren’t going to be super-exciting seeing as we are just inch worming when it comes to tech at this point in the game.

But what indies want is a strong digital platform that pushes digital downloads and makes it easy for devs to develop for – if the PS4 offers that, then its a good system for indies.”

Sony: 'Digital business is the faster growing business' screenshot

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, speaking to our own Dale North, talked a bit about the role digital distribution plays in today's market, and specifically how it will relate to the PlayStation 4.

"Digital business is the faster growing business" he said. "We do not publish numbers, but every month it's almost a new record that the purchase on Vita is higher than the PS3, because everything is available [digitally]."

He goes on to note the role that brick and mortar will play as time goes on: "As the industry changes, I believe retailers will change their focus as well." This is already true for GameStop, who is pushing digital purchases like crazy and profiting from them.

What the future really holds -- we'll see. But I know a lot of people out there would not be happy with an entirely digital era.

News::Details regarding PlayStation 4 Eye camera device

Details regarding PlayStation 4 Eye camera device screenshot

Something Sony didn't go into great lengths to explain last evening was the PlayStation 4 Eye. The device has two high-definition stereoscopic cameras which will allow the device to triangulate positioning in a three-dimensional space. This allows for motion gesturing, head tracking, and body mapping for direct implementation into games.

It has potential applications for augmented reality games. One cool aspect of having two cameras is one can be dedicated to making the picture look great while the other focuses on recording movement. A second use for the cameras is the ability to take 3D pictures. The device features a full microphone array to cut out noise, tell which direction voice is coming from, find out who is speaking, and focus on that particular person.

Voice recognition could also extend to command features. Sony, however, isn't ready to talk about that just yet and we will know more about the device's functionality in the future.

Get ready to Move. Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed this morning in a roundtable discussion that the shiny little light bar on the back of the DualShock 4 controller is for PS Move-like functionality.

He called the rear, multicolored light an extension of of the PS Move technology, and not just a way for the system and PS4 Eye to identify your player number. While anyone would have guessed this, it's nice to have confirmation.

Yoshida said, "It's an extension of the PS Move technology that we incorporated into the DualShock 4 so that the camera can see where it is."

The Witcher 3 officially confirmed for the PlayStation 4 screenshot

It's official -- The Witcher 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 4. CD Projekt explains that this was in the cards for some time, and not a recent decision: "we were thrilled when asked, several months ago, to be one of the developers who were granted early access to the PlayStation 4."

They also go on to say that The Witcher 3 "will be released in 2014 simultaneously on all high-end platforms available." Is the Wii U "high-end" enough? Does this include Microsoft's new console? We'll have to play the waiting game on those two lingering questions.

I have a lot to say on first two Witcher games, but overall, I really enjoy the lore and the world it takes place in. Specifically, I'm super interested in seeing the actual Wild Hunt in action, as it's one of the coolest events I've ever seen in a game, that was rarely touched in the second title.

News::First Diablo III PlayStation screens surface

Blizzard has released the first screens of the PlayStation version of Diablo III on Battle.net.

The game will be released on both PlayStation 3 and 4, and will be based on the existing PC game – including Paragon levels, the Infernal Machine event, Monster Power, Brawling and a number of other post-PC-release updates.

There’s no clarification yet as to whether the PS4 version will take advantage of its host hardware’s higher ceiling, or be ostensibly the same as its PS3 counterpart, but Blizzard will show the PS3 game at PAX East next month.

The blog post does, however, mention some of the changes being wrought for the console release, including, “customized controls, a new user interface, and a dynamic camera perspective.”

There will be four-player online and local co-op, too. Here’s the first look:

As if the mere mention of Laharl's return with a brand new proper Disgaea game wouldn't be enough to excite me in the first place -- this new Laharl-centric trailer has be yearning to play Dimension 2 .

You'll see a ton of gameplay in this fairly lengthy video, including the Item Sea, combat, some anime cutscenes, and the Dark Assembly. If you can't watch the trailer for whatever reason, I grabbed a ton of screens to check out in the gallery!

What's Flonne doing in a giant destructive mascot suit? I have no idea!
