News:: This Pokemon Gold and Silver launch trailer brings back the memories

It's funny to think that of everything the 3DS has going on as of late (Fire Emblem Echoes, Ever Oasis, Samus Returns, and next month's Mario & Luigi), it's the impending Pokémon Gold and Silver eShop releases that are most likely to have me digging out the handheld and playing until my hands cramp.

This launch trailer hits me hard. As a kid, I got a Game Boy Color and Pokémon Silver on the same day, right before our family was about to go on a road trip. What a combo that was at that age. I played the whole way, and to this day I still associate Lake of Rage and red Gyarados with my mom's old minivan.

I have so many fond memories fused to these games. Friday's gonna be such a nostalgic day.

News:: Vanillaware's 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has my attention

Vanillaware and Atlus have teamed up for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, "a departure from the studio's traditional fantasy style." While I still can't pin this one down after watching the TGS 2017 trailer -- more gameplay would've helped! -- it has mechs and it's directed by George Kamitani, so, yeah.

That ominous music leaves me feeling anxious, especially since 13 Sentinels is described as having a "bleak" world. Look for it to grace PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita sometime next year.

News:: Wine-making sim Terroir looks delightful

Confession: I spent a solid 10 minutes researching terms that wine enthusiasts and sommeliers use to describe alcoholic grape juice. I don't drink wine unless it comes in a cardboard box and up until today, I thought everything Paul Giamatti said in Sideways was made up. But no, turns out that words like "herbaceous," "lifted," and "heady" aren't just for high school stoners; wine folk use them too.

Despite the fact that all of my wine purchases include a slappable bag, I'm keen to check out Terroir. It's a sleek-looking management sim about owning and running a wine estate.

News:: No Heroes Allowed returns this October

The wacky dungeon strategy series What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord!? was my absolute jam on PlayStation Vita, and it's a pleasant surprise whenever a new entry is greenlit. No Heroes Allowed VR is coming up next, and while it's a niche proposition, I'm personally excited as hell.

It's the same monster-breeding, ecosystem-managing format but translated to 3D. The last PSVR game I played, Dino Frontier, nailed the diorama-like sensation of virtual reality. I hope this will too.

I like to think that I keep decent tabs on PSVR releases, but even I had forgotten this game was in the pipeline. Hopefully Sony makes some more noise about it before the mid-October launch.

Also, I had to quadruple-check that I didn't inadvertently write "No More Heroes VR."

News:: 'It's not porn, Mom! It's a JRPG!'

[Ricky Namara absolutely nails that feeling of paranoia I get every time I go into a game store and look at box art while looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody thinks knows I'm a pervert staring at particular titles. My mother still probably thinks I'm a pervert from watching me beat Metal Gear Solid 3 while being chased by a robot with a bikini-clad chick on the back of the bike driven by my one-eyed Snake. Even typing that out felt dirty. My main man Ricky got featured on Destructoid by writing a kickass blog. Write one for yourself, and see as your perversion is splayed out for the [m]asses! - Wes]

My love affair with JRPGs began with Chrono Trigger on a cold winter afternoon in 1995. I was a young, bright-eyed kid on an exchange student program experiencing the U.S. of A. for the very first time in my life, and my host family owned an SNES that their kids barely ever used. One of their kid's friends brought over "this game with a kewl box art" that he impulse-bought, but both were quick to lose all interest over it, for what they told me later was the massive amount of, "talky-talky bits."

I asked them if I could play the game if they weren't going to play it. They said they didn't care before rushing outside to play like normal kids. I picked up the controller, restarted the game, and pressed the button for "New Game" before succumbing to its warm, gentle, lover-like embrace.

News:: Title says it all: A Certain Magical Virtual-On coming to PS4 and Vita

Excluding console ports, the last new Virtual-On game was released by Sega in 2003. After 14 years we have word of a brand new one coming to Japan for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on February 15, 2018.

Announced during Sony's pre-TGS PlayStation press conference, A Certain Magical Virtual-On will be a crossover of sorts with the A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun franchise. Strange, but hey why the fuck not?

News:: Rumor: Netflix app is ready for Switch, awaiting Nintendo's approval

When the Nintendo Switch launched, it lacked several apps and features that had been mainstays of not just the Wii U, but pretty much anywhere people could play games. One of those absent apps was Netflix, and given the portable nature of the console, fans and critics alike were puzzled why Nintendo was trailing behind the competition with the absence of the app. Thankfully, Nintendo seems to have finally caught up.

An anonymous Netflix sales representative unveiled today that the app for the Nintendo Switch is "locked and loaded" and only requires approval from Nintendo before hitting the eShop. This information comes via GoNintendo user KamehamehaX, who is the claimed Netflix representative and source for this story.

Neither Netflix or Nintendo have confirmed the report at the time of writing this story.

News:: Now all 'Overwatch' players can visit Junkertown

At Gamescom last month, Blizzard teased fans of its hero shooter Overwatch with a new map: Junkertown. The escort map across the post-nuclear Australian wasteland was opened up to PC test realm players a week later, but now it's live on all platforms for all players.

News:: Video Review: Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

Rise and shine, indeed. I did a lot of that over the weekend, almost at noon each day since this game kept me up until 6:00am at one point (as I didn't want to stop playing until the trial had ended, and some of these last over four hours). As a newcomer to the series as well, I didn't know what to expect going in, and some of the writing made me do a double take. However, by the time I was editing the video review for this game, I knew for sure next weekend I would be crawling back for more.

In the future though I'll be sure to pick this up on PlayStation 4 with the other games so I can get the full experience. With that said, as some of you may know, our own CJ Andriessen wrote the review and played it on PlayStation 4. Meanwhile, I captured all the footage you see in the video review on the PC version of the game, and if you're on the fence about which version to get -- let me violently shove you off the fence to the PlayStation 4 side.

News:: Phil Spencer is movin' on up at Microsoft

Xbox head Phil Spencer has received plenty of praise over the past few years for the way that the Xbox One has changed under his leadership. It's not just external parties who have taken notice. Microsoft just rewarded Spencer in a big way.

Spencer was just added to Microsoft's Senior Leadership Team, a 16-person group that's made up of executives and board of directors members. Apart from his increased influence over decisions, it's said that Spencer will now report directly to CEO Satya Nadella. Before, Spencer reported to Terry Myerson, who is the executive vice president of the Windows and Devices Group. The promotion also comes with a title bump from "head of Xbox" to "executive vice president of gaming."

While Xbox is still under the Windows and Devices Group banner, this change emphasizes Microsoft's video game-related efforts by giving a seat at the table to the head of gaming. It also underscores how the Xbox brand encompasses both console and Windows 10 now.

With a company as big as Microsoft, it's reasonable to think of video games as a small fish in a deep revenue stream. Spencer's appointment to this select group serves as a reassuring notice that Xbox isn't a relative afterthought. It also acts as a Hall of Fame induction of sorts for Spencer, as this appointment cements him as one of the best leaders Xbox has ever had.

News:: GOG has another huge sale, and we have 460 games to give away

GOG's really making a splash in the PC sales market. Steam normally has this area cornered, but GOG has earned a reputation for itself lately for throwing big and relatively-frequent sales events. Another one is underway right now.

GOG's Big Deal Sale began yesterday, and it features more than 200 games that are discounted up to 90 percent off. The full list is available here. It's too many to individually list, but GOG made a point of noting that there are "historically low prices" on Little Nightmares ($11.99), Galaxy of Pen and Paper ($12.69), Tacoma ($15.99), Aragami ($7.99), Sudden Strike 4 ($37.49), 80 Days ($3.39), Obduction ($17.99), and Rebel Galaxy ($4.99).

To help promote the occasion, GOG is giving us 460 copies of games to give away. Here's what's up for grabs:

News:: Review: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition

I've been a huge fan of Rayman's revival period. After the Rabbids spun off into their own universe (which even got big enough to crossover with Mario recently), and Rayman fell into relative obscurity, I was extremely delighted to play through Rayman Origins and its even better follow-up, Rayman Legends.

After only playing it on the Wii U, I was curious as to how well Legends' GamePad-centric mechanic translated to its ports and even how it played on the go. Luckily for me, a "definitive" version of the title collected all of the content spread across multiple ports and sought to deliver the best of both home and portable worlds.

Too bad it only really nails half of each.

News:: Master Chief will finally grace a Nintendo console via official Minecraft skins

It may have taken 16 years to happen, but Halo's Master Chief will finally be playable on a Nintendo platform, though not necessarily in a way that fan's have wanted. Due to Microsoft going all in with their "Better Together" updates for all versions of Minecraft (minus Sony), the "Halo mashup pack" will soon be coming to each iteration of the immensely popular game.

So, in some weird way, you'll get to use a rival console's mascot on a Nintendo platform and potentially kill Mario with him. When are we going to see a Smash Bros.-esque game that is simply titled Console Wars? I think that would be a riot (maybe literally). Either way, this is pretty neat news; maybe we'll even get to see Mario grace the Xbox One in the future. That would definitely blow people's minds.

News:: City Shrouded in Shadow adds Mechagodzilla, Evangelion Unit-00, and more anime titans

This Disaster Report follow-up sure it loaded with a bunch of wild monsters. Now it just got a bunch more announced via the weekly issue of Famitsu magazine. They are Mechagodzilla, Unit-00 and Unit-02 from Evangelion, Griffon and Abraham from Patlabor, and Dada from Ultraman.

Seems just about anything is on the table anymore. I won't be surprised if they announce Tetsujin-28, King Kong, or Demolition Girl next.

News:: New 'Wolfenstein' trailer is a reminder to always fight fascism

Nazis are the perfect video game enemy because they have zero redeeming qualities. It's something the Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus development team at Machine Games knows and the marketing department at publisher Bethesda Softworks is keen to capitalize on, especially given the current political climate. Watching the latest trailer, it's hard to not feel like it's a direct response to Donald Trump's "violence on both sides" statements regarding Klansmen, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and their counter-protesters from Charlottesville last month.

News:: Take an odyssey over to the Humble Store to grab Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee for free

Oddworld was the biggest damn thing back in 1997. I still remember being in elementary school and being jealous of kids with a PlayStation. As dark and gruesome as some elements may have been, Oddworld was captivating for its excellently paced gameplay and surprisingly detailed narrative. When eventually getting my own PlayStation, I somehow missed out on Abe's Oddysee, so I've still never managed to experience this game first-hand.

That will soon change! Thanks to the Humble Store finally wrapping up their "End-of-Summer" sale, you can now nab Abe's Oddysee for the low, low price of free! They'll even throw in some free Mudokon Pops to sweeten the deal! *Mudokon Pops not included*

News:: Neko Atsume making its way to PlayStation VR

It's Tokyo Game Show week and that means waking up to a bunch of energizing little news nuggets. This morning, for me, it was Neko Atsume VR. The cat-collecting mobile game is coming to PlayStation VR next year and even though I've had my fill by now, I want everything to do with this new title.

Will it live up to what I'm imagining? Probably not.

But if the PSVR game nails the aesthetic and lets you pet your feline hoard, I'm in. My cat usually hops in my lap when I'm playing VR games, so that's going to be freaky with Neko Atsume.

News:: Time to wreck Nazi heads in Wolfenstein II's new NSFW trailer

A new trailer hit the airwaves today for Bethesda's first-person shooter sequel Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. It looks like absolute, wanton, gun-toting carnage.

All-American John Cena-type B.J. Blazkowicz is back in action, teaming up with a band of rag-tag resistance fighters (again) with a plan to take down the Nazi regime, who have overthrown Manhattan, in the only way they know how, by dual-wielding hot lead in harm's way.

The trailer introduces us to a few new characters, as well as giving us some chaotic in-game action, along with a few glimpses at the game's blackly-comic tone. Bethesda employee Pete Hines once described the upcoming title as "Fucking Bananas" and, based on this preview, his in-depth observation may prove quite astute.

The NSFW trailer (naughty words, violence and even some nookie) can be seen below.

News:: Ana is one of the most fun characters to enter Heroes of the Storm

More Overwatch is coming to Heroes of the Storm. Some of you didn't even want one more character, but lo and behold, two are coming on top of a new Volskaya battleground. It's inevitable when the former is so massively zeitgeisty, but I truly think that every Overwatch hero has translated very well into the MOBA arena.

But it's not just about translating those heroes, the HotS team needs to ensure that they're battling power creep and keeping all of the roles in check. "We won't take a year to add more supports into the game," a Blizzard representative told me during a recent interview. Well, if they're anything like Ana, that's fine with me.

News:: Dead or Alive gets an all new waifu for upcoming Venus Vacation

The Dead or Alive series is introducing a new character for the upcoming PC browser title Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation. The weekly edition of Famitsu reveals Misaki will join the girls on the beach when the free-to-play title hits Japan later this year.

Marie and Honoka were the previous two newest characters (excluding characters from other franchises) and quickly became the face of the Dead or Alive series, appearing in every game since their introduction via DLC to Dead or Alive 5. Thus you can likely count on Misaki appearing in future installments (still waiting for Dead or Alive 6 over here), though I hope they give more hair options. The pony-tail on one side is cute, but it triggers my OCD.

News:: YouTube's Twitch-like subscriptions are available to any channel

YouTube just stepped up its efforts to compete with the likes of Twitch and Mixer. As of today, YouTube Gaming's sponsorships (read: paid subscriptions) are open to any eligible creator. So long as you run a gaming channel that's enabled for livestreaming, can earn money and has at least 1,000 free subscribers, you too can ask viewers to pay a monthly fee (now $5) that unlocks custom emotes, immunity to chat slow mode and participation in sponsor-only chats. Naturally, this also means hooking into the third-party tools that game streamers take for granted, such as StreamLabs (for notifying you when there's a new sponsor) or a sponsors-only Discord chat.

News:: Review: Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

Did you know Danganronpa’s Junko Enoshima was named the most popular video game character to cosplay as by Guinness World Records: Gamers Edition? It’s true, even if the publication’s description of the game as a “fight club overseen by a robot bear” isn’t exactly correct. Junko, with her mess of a personality and easily replicable style, has become an international icon for fans of the series. Perhaps more than the Monokuma mascot, Junko is everything we love about Danganronpa: she’s the personality, the mystery, the murder, the mayhem and the despair, all rolled into an eye-appealing package we can’t help but look at.

In fact, we never want to look away. In the immediate aftermath of the carnage of every killing game, we cry out for more, never fully satiated by what the series has given us thus far. We demand more characters, more killings, and more mysteries, and Team Danganronpa continues to abide, this time delivering with Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
