News::EuroGamer - I do care for a next-gen medieval RPG with no fantasy

EuroGamer - Daniel Vavra has a magnificent beard and a DayZ T-shirt. He's squashed in a window on my screen, his image beamed direct from from his Warhorse studio in Prague. In another window is streamed a live demo of his new game Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Remember that next-gen medieval role-playing game with no fantasy that so captured people's attention in December? This is it. And it's beautiful.

News::Cyanide Studio Announce New IP Styx: Master of Shadows

Despite their hit and miss nature when it comes to their games, Cyanide has an affinity when it comes to dark fantasy. Having adapted a number of tabletop titles in the past, including Games Workshops Blood Bowl, theyre similarly familiar with the more cartoonish or trope subverting side of fantasy games. As such, between the synopsis and screenshots the recent announced Styx: Master of Shadows sounds like something well worth looking into.

News::GamesBeat: Might and Magic X: Legacy resurrects a classic franchise but conjures boredom (review)

GamesBeat's Jay Henningsen: Might & Magic X: Legacy certainly did remind me of fun times I had in the past with earlier entries in the series. I even had fun for several hours. But once the nostalgia wore off, it served as a stark indication that many of these design choices should have been left in the past with its predecessors.

News::Nidhogg - As We Play - Expansive DLC

Games have evolved into massive, expansive worlds, with incredible attention to detail, subtle features and intelligent characterization. Looking at the worlds created by the likes of Bethesda, Crystal Dynamics, Irrational Games, Naughty Dog and others, one would be forgiven for thinking that bigger is always better. Yet the early days of gaming offered something much lighter. It doesnt get much more basic than Pong and even the likes of Donkey Kong and Pac-Man had simple ideas but immense replayability. Arguably, thats something the modern day game lacks. No matter how many New Game + or difficulty sets you add, one playthrough is usually enough to satisfy most people. Its fair to say that many modern games lack a long-term hook and rather are a showcase for developers to try to bring this industry more in-line with movies and TV with the quality of narrative and set-pieces. And thats fine, but every once a while, its important to be reminded of where we came from....

Metal Arcade: Jason Bakker writes: Assassins Creed Liberation was originally released for the PlayStation Vita in 2012, and for the most part it was successful at shrinking down the familiar franchise formula to the Vitas small screen. GamingLives takes a look at the much-talked-about point-and-click adventure from Double Fine. "Admittedly, while I found myself stumped on a fair few occasions, I never felt like the answers stumbled into the dreaded realm of developers logic solutions that only make sense through a garbled line of reasoning that only the person writing it could conjure. One or two puzzles came close to garnering that sentiment, but that label would soon disappear when you actually thought about the solution; they would make much more sense in retrospect, rather than leaving you wondering how that conclusion could ever be reached."

Metal Gear Rising, the Platinum-developed game from a year, is well made for what it is, but is extremely short, even against Platinum standards. Thats arguably the biggest knock against the game, but also a bit of an asset as well. Metal Gear Rising (Im ignoring the stupid subtitle) is a good game, but has one or two issues that hold it back from being an amazing one.
