Did you install Linux on your PS3? If you can prove it, Sony owes you $55. If not, but you still owned a PS3, they’ll give you $9. It’s all part of a settlement from a case over the removal of the PS3's “Other Operating Systems” feature.

News:: Friday the 13th pushed back to 2017, but adding a story campaign

Friday the 13th is known for bringing bad luck. Today is Thursday the 13th and it brings news about Friday the 13th that's not necessarily bad, but definitely important.

On the game's Kickstarter page, publisher Gun Media revealed that Jason's teen-slashing antics are being pushed back from the fall of 2016 to the spring of 2017. The delay is seemingly due to standard game development stuff; it just needs more time in the oven.

However, the bigger news is that developer IllFonic is adding a single-player campaign to Friday the 13th. The story mode is currently set to launch in the summer of 2017, a few months after the multiplayer fully rolls out. Little is known about the campaign right now, like whether you play as Jason or a camp counselor trying to survive.

Other details to trickle out of this update are: Tommy Jarvis will be a playable character, Packanack Lodge will be added as the third map, and there will be offline AI bots. But, it's the story campaign supplementing the asymmetric multiplayer that's most exciting. The idea of that squashes any disappointment about a delay.

News:: Battlefield 1 has a playable pigeon sequence

Pigeons are mostly a garbage bird. They're rats with wings. They exist to further crowd the streets of big cities and to carry disease. Also, they love to suddenly fly at your face, making you flinch like you're the asshole. Pigeons are usually bad.

That is except when they are good. Pigeons have a storied history of being used in war to deliver messages. They'd often complete their mission despite being wounded. In fact, they were so reliable that the Germans trained hawks to kill pigeons during the Franco-Prussian war. Pigeons are so good at wartime stuff that they sparked an entire bird-related counter-offensive.

EA DICE pays tribute to these winger warriors in Battlefield 1. During a mission called "Through Mud and Blood," a British tank crew is trapped in the mud and surrounded by enemies during the Second Battle of Cambrai. Things look awfully bleak until one of the troops releases a pigeon.

That's when Battlefield 1 gives the player control of the pigeon. As you can see in the video above, it's about a minute of tranquil soaring and soothing music juxtaposed against the war-torn French countryside. It's not complicated and it's not skillful, but it's effective.

Afterward, Battlefield 1 presumably gets back to giving the player control of the more ghastly parts of war. All the shooting, all the explosions, all the killing. But, just for a moment, it recognizes one of the unsung heroes of past wars. Even if they suck today.

News:: Listen to the Civilization VI theme from 'Baba Yetu' composer Christopher Tin

Christopher Tin, who brought us the Civilization IV theme "Baba Yetu" and won a Grammy for it, is back composing music for the strategy series. His theme for Civilization VI is called "Sogno di Volare" (the dream of flight), and here he is speaking about its creation ahead of next week's game launch.

Amusingly, Tin says this "Euro-centric" piece of music passed a very specific test. "The other way that I know I'm onto something good is my wife will come into the room and say, 'I like this!' Because if I'm writing crap music, or only so-so music, she'll just stay out in the living room. She won't wander in. But when you get the unsolicited feedback from someone, where they voluntarily come and say 'Oh, this does it for me,' then you know you're onto something."

News:: Steam is overhauling its support for PlayStation 4 controllers

Steam is slowly assimilating every control method into its ever-expanding core, and it's just as well. While Xbox controllers were king on PC in terms of ease of use, the DualShock 4 has slowly been climbing the ranks.

During its "Steam Dev Days" conference in Seattle, Valve also unveiled some more advancements for DualShock users. Soon you can basically customize it as heavily as a Steam controller by way of the Steam API, which includes gyro and touchpad adjustments. Based on the mockup, it looks really sleek.

I still prefer the Xbox One pad for basically everything but fighting games and precision platformers, but this is a nice concession if you happen to like perpendicular analog sticks.

News:: Resident Evil 7's 'Kitchen' demo is out now on PlayStation VR

Just in time for the launch of the PlayStation VR (yeah, it's out today, expect lots more coverage outside of what we've already provided) comes the "Kitchen" demo for Resident Evil 7. If you're picking it up you should find it already included in the 40-ish GB demo disc, but for those of you light on space, it can also be installed individually.

To be clear, this "demo" is mostly non-interactive, lasts several minutes, and has almost nothing to do with Resident Evil in general -- it kind of just sets the new tone they're going with this time. It's also not the same one from E3, if you've already played that -- in fact, it's the third, after "Beginning Hour" and "Lantern," the latter of which debuted at Gamescom.

Resident Evil 7 is still set for a January 24, 2017 release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A recent advertisement hinted that its VR capabilities would be exclusive to PS4 for "12 months."

News:: Review: DoDonPachi Resurrection

I've talked in the past about game preservation, and I can't stress enough how important it is. While many pine for "the old days," and are somewhat blinded by impartial nostalgia, there are a lot of incredible works in our past that need to be remembered, studied, and enjoyed for years to come.

Pretty much all of Cave's catalog, including DoDonPachi Resurrection, falls into that purview.

Last week in San Jose, California, thousands of mostly youngish white guys attended Oculus VR’s third annual developer’s conference. Over three days in the San Jose Convention Center, attendees milled from one talk to another and hit up parties with open bars and plenty of food. VR demos were on offer in the hallways, and Mark Zuckerberg gave a keynote speech where he talked about the future of virtual reality and demoed Facebook’s social VR app. It was all about what you’d expect, save for one notable absence: Palmer Luckey, the 24-year-old founder of Oculus VR, the company that makes the Oculus Rift headset, was nowhere to be found.

News:: PC Game Developers Say Anti-Piracy Tech Would Make Their Game Worse

“We don’t believe in DRM, and we don’t like DRM,” two of the developers behind the new game Shadow Warrior 2 recently told Kotaku in an e-mail, when we asked them about their game’s lack of anti-piracy protection. DRM, of course, refers to digital rights management or anti-piracy systems that are widely used to keep people from stealing games and other software. “We don’t believe it works,” they said. “Nor that it’s good for the players.”

News:: Steam will soon natively support PlayStation 4 controllers

While it's been possible to link a DualShock 4 to a PC to play Steam games, the functionality has been provided by third-party apps, not the companies themselves. Luckily, that will soon change, after Valve's Jeff Bellinghausen confirmed to Gamasutra that the game company is working to include native support for other gamepads, starting with the PlayStation 4 controller.

News:: Buy Civilization VI, get 20% off another upcoming triple-A title

If you're a Civ fan pondering buying a copy of Civilization VI, the bad news is that the pre-order deals have dried up as Firaxis puts a halt to discounts across the web. The good news though is that retailers are getting a bit creative to incentivize pre-purchases.

As of writing, Green Man Gaming is offering an interesting proposition when you purchase a copy of Civilization VI Standard or Deluxe with a minor 5% off discount. As a pre-purchase bonus, GMG will offer you a unique 20% off coupon code good for select upcoming triple-A games.

New Civilization VI Pre-Purchase Deal

Titles such as Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition are now as cheap as $37.43 after stacking instant savings with the unique code. Here are some of the titles that qualify and their price after coupon:

  • $37.43 - Battlefield 1
  • $37.43 - Dishonored 2
  • $42.39 - Titanfall 2
  • $42.40 - Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  • $56.31 - Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition
  • $38.40 - Watch Dogs 2 (and its Gold/Deluxe editions)
  • $39.43 - Steep (and its Gold edition)

If you pick up this Civilization VI deal from GMG, it would only make sense if you are planning to get one of these other games listed above. While the genre is decisively different, the lowered price on any one of these is quite enticing. (E.g., this is probably one of the only places you can pick up the overpriced Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition at a reasonable price of $56.)

Pre-purchasing Civ VI at GMG, whether the Standard or Deluxe, will net you the bonus Aztec Civilization Pack. The Steam key will be delivered to your email inbox or you'll be able to find it in your GMG account order history page. Pre-load details have not been revealed yet, but GMG will be sending keys out during the pre-load period as per usual.
