News:: Alden Ehrenreich is signed on to play Han Solo in at least three movies

We've yet to see Hail, Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich grace our movie screens as young Han Solo, but Luscasfilm (predictably) has a hold on him for the time being. Promoting Solo in an interview with Esquire, Ehrenreich let slip that he is on contract for three films as our favorite scoundrel with a heart of gold.

When asked about how many films he was signed on for, the actor replied:

News:: The 300 Week 16: 2018 Tribeca Film Festival Critic's Notebook (Part 1)

Hey there, gang, and welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my foolish quest to watch 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. I hope there’s something here for you to enjoy and share as well.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival is in progress and runs until Sunday. I've been able to catch 15 films in the opening days. It would have been more, but I needed sleep and time to finish some other work. Jesse Lab and I will have more reviews out by next week, so keep checking back with Flixist and our Tribeca 2018 coverage.

Right now, I am tired, drinking coffee, and trying to finish this before heading in for another long day of movie watching, including three movies at the festival followed by a screening of Avengers: Infinity War.

It's raining, my feet are soaked, and my blazer smells funny.

And so, onward.

News:: For as simple as it is, Dragon Quest VR looks dope

Sign me the heck up for a full-on Dragon Quest game in virtual reality. This month in Japan, VR Zone Shinjuku will offer Dragon Quest VR, an experience that assembles two warriors, a mage, and a priest to fight slimes, drackies, and other assorted monsters leading up to the big bad Zoma.

Based on this short footage captured by Famitsu, the game is more of an enemy-clearing tech exploration than a sweeping RPG, but it sure is pretty. It's easy to fill in the gaps and imagine how immersive this could be as a proper time-hogging Dragon Quest adventure. One day we'll get there.

Dragon Quest VR will be open to the public beginning April 27.

News:: Review: Batman Ninja

While the MCU has dominated theatres for the past decade, DC has been putting out a constant stream of animated movies. Most of their animated movies are adaptations of classic DC stories and if I'm being perfectly honest here, most of them range from being mediocre to outright bad. The problem usually lies in how the stories are adapted. By all accounts, it should be simple for a comic book to be turned into an animated movie, but the animation has usually been subpar, the stories have weird additions and subtractions, and they usually truncate the source material into a shadow of its former self. The fact that DC turned "All-Star Superman", one of the greatest superhero comics of all time, into what was essentially a three-part Superman: The Animated Series made-for-tv movie should be a crime against humanity.

But hark, through the heavens late last year, trailers began to surface of a DC animated movie about Batman being a ninja. Some of you may roll your eyes, but the animation looked solid, it was directed by the creator of Afro Samurai, and featured an original Elseworlds story about Batman and a group of Gotham villains being sent back in time to feudal Japan. It looked interesting, and I couldn't wait to see it.

Now that I've seen it, I can't stop gushing over it. Between Infinity War and this, this is a great week for superhero movies because my God is Batman Ninja a masterpiece of animation.

News:: Xbox implies plans to port some old Halo to PC

Halo is one of the most revered first-person shooters that doesn't have much of a presence on PC. The original, Combat Evolved, was ported to PC in 2003; Halo 2 helped launch Games for Windows Live in 2007. Besides those two, Microsoft has kept mainline Halo confined strictly to its consoles.

In recent years, Microsoft has made a significant effort to blur the lines between Xbox and PC gaming. With the promise that all future first-party titles are Play Anywhere (meaning that they're bought once and players can freely switch between PC and Xbox One versions), we have implicit confirmation that Halo 6 will launch on Windows 10 PC.

However, we might get other Halo games on PC even sooner. Recently, Microsoft shut down community modding project "ElDewrito" in order to protect its intellectual property. It's standard corporate stuff that we've seen a million times. But, the end of Microsoft's statement is surprisingly frank: "As we look ahead, we're very excited about the prospects of an official classic Halo experience making its way to PC." Xbox Head Phil Spencer took to Twitter to specifically call out that quote as something to pay attention to.

It's certainly evident that some previous Halo will be ported to PC at some point. But what? The entirety of the Master Chief Collection (a current-gen remaster of Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and later Halo: ODST as DLC) isn't a bad bet. Alternatively, it could be Halo: Reach -- Bungie's swan song before it moved to Destiny. Or, it could simply be Halo 5

Whatever it is, we know that Microsoft's intentions for Halo and PC aren't exclusively forward-looking; there seem to be plans for past Halos too.

News:: Pro gaming team signs 13-year-old ‘Fortnite’ player

Among the four members making up pro gaming organization Team Secret's new European Fortnite squad, one stood out: 13-year-old Kyle "Mongraal" Jackson. Almost immediately after the team was introduced today, news outlets jumped on Jackson's youth. Even if he may not hold the record (some say the then-12-year-old Jun "TY" Tae Yang was picked up to play StarCraft in 2006, noted Cybersport.com), the Fortnite ace is one of the youngest ever signed to pro team.

News:: Reboot Develop is the most chill game conference

I'm a few days removed from Reboot Develop 2018 and despite a long trip back home ripe for reflection and a more-or-less normalized sleep schedule, I'm still processing the event. Set along the Adriatic Sea in the otherworldly beautiful Dubrovnik, Croatia -- a city quite literally fit for Game of Thrones -- Reboot just closed out its fifth year. It was my first time attending. Hopefully, it won't be my last.

Over the past week, you might have seen some of my coverage from the developer-focused conference. Croteam shared a tease for Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, as did Housemarque for its mysterious new multiplayer game Stormdivers. Hideki Kamiya verbalized his desire to bring the Wii U darling The Wonderful 101 over to Switch. Tim Schafer spoke about his long and winding career, including his creative process. And Yoot Saito revealed an unreleased and never-before-seen Nintendo DS game he was involved with called Mario Motors. Yoot Saito is the best and you can't not love him.

News:: Valiant Hearts director reflects on WWI once more with 11-11: Memories Retold

While at Ubisoft, Yoan Fanise explored World War I to great success with Valiant Hearts: The Great War, a 2D adventure game that felt like a real labor of love. He has since left the company and co-founded his own, DigixArt, out of Montpellier. For his next project, Fanise is returning to that same subject matter.

11-11: Memories Retold is a WWI-set "story-driven narrative adventure" made in collaboration with Aardman (Wallace and Gromit) and published by Bandai Namco. Here's a mood-setting first look:

"From the painted style to the emotional journey we create for the player to revive their heritage, we are pushing the boundaries of what a game can be and hope it will leave a mark on you," said Fanise.

11-11: Memories Retold is headed to PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

News:: The 'Wallace and Grommit' studio is creating an emotional WWI game

Games set in real-world conflicts don't necessarily glorify war, but it's rare that they fully address the horrors of war. For every poignant story like Valiant Hearts, there's many more titles that might only offer token commentary. Wallace & Grommit's Aardman Animation Studios, Bandai Namco and DigixArt want to change that. They've unveiled 11-11: Memories Retold, a narrative adventure about two World War I soldiers who meet under the "most unlikely of circumstances."

News:: As its Kickstarter winds down, The Good Life's prototype is made available

With nine days left and a few hundred thousand dollars remaining, The Good Life's Kickstarter campaign's success seems questionable. The project has all the quirks of a Swery-led project: an outlandish story, nutty characters, and if its prototype demo is anything to go off of, some rough edges.

In what appears to be an effort to drum up additional attention for The Good Life before its second crowdfunding stint ends, developer Swery65 released an early demo for the public. The free download (available here) comes with a note from Swery, stating while there a handful of bugs in the prototype build, he "[hopes] you'll enjoy this chance to visit the world of The Good Life much earlier than scheduled."

The prototype functions as a proof of concept more than anything. The Good Life's elevator pitch revolves around Naomi, a photojournalist, who winds up in a town that seems perfect save for the fact that its residents all turn into animals. It's weird, but the premise is just out there enough to make it sound promising. In the demo, players can guide Naomi through a small section of town and interact with a few villagers, and offer to help them with some small-town drama. One character, for example, recruits Naomi to document an extramarital rendezvous. By searching out the couple, sneaking a well-timed photo, and passing the shot along, Naomi gets to not only be a hero but presumably also break up a marriage. Weird.

It's worth noting that despite being rough, the prototype is rather charming. Naomi's a bit of a grump; almost to the point of being endearing. She's a fish out of water in a town overrun by sheep, and the little tidbits of dialogue present in the demo serve as a nice introduction to The Good Life's fiction. How it all comes together—if at all—remains to be seen. But for now, at least you can download the prototype and see if it warrants a contribution to the game's Kickstarter.

News:: Beyond: Two Souls headlines May's PS Plus lineup

May is looking a little emotional for PS Plus. To build hype for the launch of Detroit: Become Human at the end of the month, Sony is handing out Beyond: Two Souls on PS4 for Plus subscribers. Now everyone can experience the brilliance that is Willem Dafoe in digital form!

Along with Quantic Dream's PS3 swansong, Rayman Legends will also be available for PS4 players. PS3 gamers will be getting Risen 3: Titan Lords and Eat Them! while Vita gamers will have access to King Oddball! and Furmins. This is quite the eclectic collection of games, but variety is always nice. Sadly, I can't say I know much about anything beyond the two PS4 games, though I've heard Risen 3 is pretty terrible.

News:: Bullet Witch's remaster lands on PC today, so let's look at some old reviews

Bullet Witch, an Xbox 360 exclusive from 2007, is getting a PC port today courtesy of Xseed. It's a weird and janky shooter about a witch who's fighting off hell's demons in an apocalyptic America. A press release describes it as "a unique combination of Japanese dark-fantasy aesthetics and Western-style military action."

While I remember Bullet Witch being nothing short of awful, it seems like a prime candidate for cult classic status. I went to Metacritic to make sure I'm not misremembering its reception. Bullet Witch is sitting at a 55 on Metacritic. It was derided, as it has far more negative reviews than positives. However, the majority of critics landed somewhere in the middling range -- 43 thoughtful analyses that can probably be collectively summed up as "meh."

It's impossible to look through scores on Metacritic without your eyes drifting to the often-unfair pullquotes ascribed to each review. Let's single out the ones that feel most like products of 2007:

News:: Earth Defence Force 5 will be headed West this Summer

D3 Publisher have announced that Earth Defense Force 5 will be touching-down in North America this Summer, bringing all the gooey, high-octane action that has become the series trademark.

Earth Defense Force 5, which launched in Japan December 2017, continues the tradition of pitting heavily-armed squadrons against wave after wave of alien invaders, mainly consisting of giant insects and reptilian kaiju creatures. Players can combat the hordes on foot or in a variety of land and air-based vehicles.

No specific date was given for its North American debut, nor was Europe mentioned in D3 Publisher's announcement. But we will, of course, keep you up-to-date as more information becomes available. In the meantime, you can check out an amusing, bizarre preview for the Japanese release below.

News:: Magic: The Gathering Arena reveals economy, draft costs

I've been getting back into Magic for the first time in a few decades, and part of my education has been by way of the Arena beta. As Wizards of the Coast's answer to Hearthstone, the idea is to make Magic more accessible than it is in Magic Online, the popular tool of the pros that's been around since 2002.

As a recap, Arena is currently in an invite-only beta session right now, and up until this point, it's mostly been a way to stress-test and try out various quest, ranking, and reward systems. But as part of the launch of the new Dominaria set (which is also arriving this week in the real, paper form of Magic), Wizards has revealed the actual microtransaction scheme.

In short the game will run on the in-game currency of coins and the premium currency of gems. Gems are sold at roughly 750 for $4.99, and 600 Gems get you three booster packs, or you can spend the entire 750 on one "seven win/three loss" draft event. Draft wins will grant you gems (winning six will gift you 850, or your money back and then some), you'll always get a bonus booster, and you get to keep all the cards you draft.

If you finish all daily quests you can enter constructed (same deck) events for 500 gold or 95 gems in a no-limit situation in the same "seven win/three loss" format. Finally, trading is confirmed to be out at the moment, Wizards claims you can play basically everything without spending money (though there "may" be gem-only events or cosmetics at some point), and there will be one more full wipe before the beta ends -- which is still undetermined. Wizards is also testing game codes in real physical card packs ("either a one card reward and gold or a booster"), but that's only happening in New Zealand at the moment.

Here's the most important tidbit: if you buy any gems during this upcoming testing period you'll get a refund, but only in gems, not cash.

News:: Something's weirdly amiss with this Gal Gun 2 cover sleeve

This week saw the Western release of cult upskirt-shooter Gal*Gun 2, although a weird printing error may leave you wondering what barrel-blazing title you have actually picked up.

First posted by Twitter user @Luke_Balicki, the cover sleeve for the Nintendo Switch edition of Gal*Gun 2 has the artwork for Natsume's steampunk blaster Wild Guns Reloaded printed on the reverse. This is a baffling situation as the two titles aren't even from the same publisher, having nothing in common outside of both games featuring the word "Gun" in their title.

This isn't the first time the Gal*Gun series has had a print issue. The PS Vita edition of Gal*Gun Double Peace was once given the erroneous ESRB rating of "E for Everyone" on its reverse, which I'm sure surprised Pops when little Jimmy started sucking the clothes of wide-eyed anime schoolgirls.

Other players are since claiming to also have the same bizarre goof. Did you pick up Gal*Gun 2? If so, do you have a similar printing error? Let us know in the comments!

News:: Shining Resonance Refrain will arrive in the West in July

Sega has announced that the revamped edition of Shining Resonance, which originally launched on PS3 in Japan back in 2014, is headed to North America and Europe on multiple formats July 10.

Shining Resonance Refrain brings the original JRPG adventure to modern formats, complete with a host of new features and modes. Refrain will feature dual-language audio and the lore-breaking "Refrain" mode, which will allow players to mess around with the canon scenarios to create alternate outcomes.

This new release will include all previous DLC and two new characters; Princess Excella and Dragonslayer Jinas. All in, Shining Resonance Refrain is looking to be the definitive edition of the PS3 original, which is all good considering Western fans never had got their hands on the title.

News:: Loot crates are now illegal in Belgium

Officials in Belgium have determined that loot boxes violate the country's gambling laws and if publishers don't remove them from their games, they face jail time and fines. Specifically, FIFA 18, Overwatch and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive were found to be in violation. While Star Wars Battlefront II was also part of the Belgian government's investigation, EA's removal of the game's loot boxes kept it from bumping up against the country's legislation. In a statement, Minister of Justice Koen Geens said that if loot boxes in the aforementioned games aren't removed, their publishers could be subject to up to five years in prison and a fine of up to €800,000 (approximately $974,926). If children are involved, those punishments could be doubled.

News:: Spider-man gets a pre-order 'Iron Spider Suit' and 'Spidey Suit Pack'

With Avengers: Infinity War coming out Friday, Sony is using the hype for Marvel's next film to promote the upcoming Spider-man game by Insomniac. If you pre-order the game (digitally or physically), you'll receive instant access to the "Iron Spider Suit" once the game comes out. The design is inspired by Infinity War's suit, so it looks pretty neat.

Along with that, there will also be a "Spidey Suit Pack" that includes things like a punk rock suit and some other assorted outfits. If that wasn't enough, you'll also receive extra in-game skill points, a Spider-Drone gadget, a PS4 theme and some custom PS4 avatars!

Here are two trailers to show off the goodies! I'm not really a fan of digital bonuses like this, but at least the pre-order seems to be instant access instead of exclusive access. Hopefully regular customers will be able to unlock these suits in-game.

Still, good news for PSVR owning Rick and Morty fans, as Sony have announced that 2017's Virtual Rick-ality is now available on the PlayStation platform. In the game, players control a clone of Morty, and must explore the universe while performing tasks, guided by nutso scientist Rick Sanchez.

The game has also received a physical release, available as a standard edition for $30 or a Collector's Edition for $50. The latter includes a double-sided poster (featuring an amusing Last of Us pastiche), a tie-in comic-book and one of those soulless Funko Pop figures featuring "Weaponized Rick".

News:: I dare you to not listen to Chumbawamba while watching this Zelda: Breath of the Wild clip

[BoTW] When they get the timing juuuust right from r/zelda

Over a year! 418 days to be exact. That's how long it's been since Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched, and I'm still finding awesome videos. I know I've been saying that a lot lately, and I'm trying to come up with new ways to share the sentiment (the exact day thing took me a bit), but it's still amazing nontheless.

This clip from Zenotha is downright hilarious, as two Guardian Skywatchers managed to somehow pinpoint Link and perfectly stunlock him after a whiffed deflection. Chumbawamba immediately came to mind and inspired this story -- which you can listen to below -- you probably won't thank me but it does enhance the video.

Fun fact: Chumbawamba ended in 2012. That's been your Chumbawamba fun fact of the year. There might be another one in 2020 if people are still making Zelda videos.

News:: South Park: The Fractured But Whole gets Nintendo Switch launch trailer

Ubisoft's unashamedly juvenile South Park: The Fractured But Whole is now available on Nintendo Switch. The publisher has released a launch trailer to celebrate the debut of the RPG sequel on Nintendo's baby.

The Fractured But Whole, like The Stick of Truth before it, sees the player step into the role of The New Kid, who arrives in the Colorado town in the middle of a turf war between rival superhero factions. As The New Kid explores South Park, busting heads and solving mysteries, a bigger conspiracy threatens to tear the town apart.

The game was praised for its redesigned battle system, great soundtrack, character customisation options and No-Shits-Given sense of humor. The Switch port is scheduled to receive the DLC content released for previous platform, but no date has been announced as of yet.

News:: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze seems to check out at 1080p, 60 frames-per-second

Digital Foundry just put Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze to the test on Switch, the results came back positive in favor of the port job.

The original Tropical Freeze on Wii U was 720p60, and the Switch edition upgrades the resolution to 1080p docked, while maintaining a consistent 60 frames. In case you were wondering, portable mode sports 648p according to the report, and the faster load times confirmed in a previous report are reconfirmed here.

Now all that's left to do is wait and potentially re-buy a game that's more expensive than it was the first time around! Man I wish Nintendo didn't do that -- as many people as possible need to experience Tropical Freeze, and a bad pricing scheme only ruins that.

News:: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is getting yet another good patch, more still on the way

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 kind of just keeps getting content. Whether it's part of the paid season pass or not, Monolith Soft is supporting it, and players have been getting trickling bits and pieces here and there like extra blades (read: Pokemon), on top of bigger things like New Game+ additions.

According to Nintendo the support is far from over too, as version 1.4.0 is coming up soon, and will be adding in the Poppi Buster and Telos: RE blades. The latter will require you to beat the game, and will then have a "high" chance of dropping.

I wonder how many people are already on their New Game+ run of this massive 60+ hour RPG? I don't regret playing it at launch one bit, as I have a lot of amazing things to come back to when I get around to my next playthrough.

News:: New trailer showcases Dragon Ball FighterZ's next warrior, Fused Zamasu

Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for their smash-hit anime fighter Dragon Ball FighterZ. The short clip gives us our first proper look at new character Fused Zamasu in action, ahead of his addition to the game's roster.

Fused Zamasu is the result of blending together Goku Black (who himself is a fused character) with Future Zamasu to create an awesome being who is the best of all worlds. The very slight videos sees the character demonstrate his free-flying ability and his devastating "Lightning of Absolution" special.

No release date has been announced for Fused Zamasu to wreak his personal brand of havoc upon DBFZ, but the character is included as part of the game's Season Pass as is expected to cost around $5 purchased separately.

News:: Sonic Mania Plus will launch in July in Japan, costs the equivalent of five dollars to upgrade

For some time now, Sonic Mania owners have been wondering how much it will cost to upgrade their copy of the game to the upcoming Sonic Mania Plus re-release. A new article in Japanese publication Famitsu may have answers.

In the article, which also announces a Japanese release date of July 19, it is stated that owners of the original Sonic Mania can upgrade to Plus for ¥500, which is roughly five of your U.S. dollars, four British Pounds, or one Bison dollar.

Of course, this is no guarantee that the upgrade will cost the exact same price in the West, nor a confirmation of a Western release date, but at least we now have a rough estimate to go on. A new trailer is expected today, so no doubt we'll be hearing more news very soon.

The upgrade will bring all of the Sonic Mania Plus extras to vanilla Sonic Mania owners. These include optimised boss fights, remixed versions of all stages, four-player Competition Mode, a save/playback feature and two new characters: Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

Sonic Mania Plus launches this Summer on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
