News::Indie Game HQ Indie Bundle Spotlight: The Greenlight Bundle #3

For Indie Game HQs first ever Indie Bundle Spotlight, Nathan takes a look at the third Greenlight Bundle. Created by Stolen Couch Games, the Greenlight Bundle aims to provide not only awesome indie games at a price of your choosing, but to also help generate traffic to the featured developers Steam Greenlight campaigns. Even though Gabe Newell has reported that Steam plans to bury Greenlight to give developers a fair shot at getting their game on Steam, we still dont have a set date of when thats happening. To that I say, why not show these indies who are still stuck in that process some support! Links for each game will be found below their respective synopses.

News::Ron Gilbert to be keynote speaker at first PAX Australia

Ron Gilbert to be keynote speaker at first PAX Australia screenshot

Aussie adventure game fans are in for a treat this July as it's been confirmed that famed game designer Ron Gilbert will be the opening "story time" keynote speaker at the first PAX Australia. The creator of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, and more recently The Cave , will be at the Melbourne event July 19-21, 2013.

A few regular PAX musical guests are confirmed for the Australian leg -- The Protomen and MC Frontalot -- along with the crew from Rooster Teeth as well as Tycho and Gabe, of course.

When PAX Australia was announced, I was worried that it wouldn't attract many notable figures but Gilbert would be a big draw. I'd love to hear his keynote, especially if he talks about his time at LucasArts developing those early adventure game classics. I could've asked him when he sat next to me at PAX Prime last year, but he seemed really keen on just eating his hot dog.

News::Triumph: Minecraft creator funding Age of Wonders 3, doesn't need a publisher

Although we originally thought Epic Games would be publishing Age of Wonders 3 for Triumph Studios, it actually turns out that the game doesn't have a publisher at all and Minecraft creator Notch, real name Markus Persson, is funding it. Distribution and co-publishing deals haven't been ruled out, but because Notch is such a big fan of the franchise and doesn't have much time to work on publishing it, he's agreed to help fund it anyway.

News::Face-Off: Aliens: Colonial Marines

EG:Given the potential for fitting the Aliens universe into a suspenseful first-person adventure, the firm but fair Eurogamer score for Aliens: Colonial Marines comes as dismaying news, but perhaps we should have seen the fire on the horizon. The signs of development hell are writ large when a game's first unveiling dates back over half a decade and where the studio credits are divided across four separate offices. In this case, we see Gearbox Software at the heart of the game's lengthy span of development, while segments of the solo campaign and multi-player are outsourced to TimeGate Studios and Nerve Software, respectively. The journey towards nailing a final release date has been described by one former Gearbox employee as "a total train wreck" though the jury is still out on the condition of the Wii U version, currently being handled by Demiurge Studios.

News::Before GTA V: 10 Forgotten Features That Were Deleted Pre-Release

WC: It is easy sometimes not to look beyond the finished article and contemplate what might have been had certain features not been omitted from the final product of the game. Indeed, Rockstar Games the publisher behind the ultra-popular open world sandbox title removed several features from GTA games in the past that fans of the title simply never got a chance to experience. These deleted features ranged from omitted vehicles and player skins to the removal of entire characters and mission strands. There were also several fantastic looking weapons that were taken out of games gone by that we never got a chance to wield, and this article focuses mostly on those. Some of these deleted features were never to see the light of day in the Grand Theft Auto universe, whilst others were merely incorporated later in future iterations.

News::Most customers wouldn’t buy console which blocks preowned, warns GameStop

60 per cent of GamesStop’s customers simply wouldn’t buy a console without the ability to play pre-owned games, the US retailer has said.

GameStop’s chief financial officer Rob Lloyd warned platform holders of the potential risk in blocking second-hand games during a presentation at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, reports GameSpot.

“It does not have a big impact on the sale of new product,” said Lloyd. “So that’s why publishers understand how important the preowned business is to them. Sony has said publicly that they don’t intend to block used games in their next console. Microsoft has refused to or has not commented on the rumours that have hit the marketplace.”

Lloyd said that GameStop had conducted some internal research since our next Xbox story broke and, unsurprisingly, stressed the importance of preowned to consumers. In its most recent quarter, used game sales accounted for 28% ofGameStop’s revenue and 43% of its profits.

“Consumers want the ability to play preowned games; they want portability in their games; they want to play physical games. And to not have those things would be a substantial reason for them to not purchase a new console.”

“I think it’s approximately 60 percent of the customers who have said they wouldn’t buy a new console if it didn’t play preowned games,” he added.

News::EA on next-gen second-hand block

Electronic Arts’ chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen has said that the market is moving towards always-on connectivity and that any potential next-gen ban on second-hand games could be a double-edged sword.

Gamasutra reports that Jorgensen covered a range of topics related to the next generation of consoles at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco yesterday.

Responding to questions prompted by our recent story on the next Xbox, the EA exec noted that while the publisher would welcome being able to sell every game full-price, it could damage the wider games buying ecosystem.

“It’s one of these classic double-edged swords,” said Jorgensen. “In one way the used game business has been critical for the health of the retail channel, and having a healthy retail channel is an important thing for us.”

“Would we like to sell everything at full price and not have a used game market? Sure. But I think the used game market’s a little like any other kind of market where it creates liquidity. The fact is, that liquidity benefits us in some fashion. So if someone goes in and trades in a game, there’s a good chance they’re going to buy another one of our games. And so if there’s a liquid market, I think that that’s not a bad thing at all.”

He added that there will always be tension between game publishers’ desire to eliminate second-hand and consumer demand for the preowned marketplace. “I can’t really comment on where the next generation boxes are going to be relative to used games. I will say that the trend in the business is to have that always-on connectivity and connect with a customer, and to the extent that the software identifies a certain customer is going to create some issues going down the road in the used game market. But I do believe that the consumer likes it, and it’s been good for the retail channel.”

From Strategy Informer: "Part Two of our Master Class series looks at Europa Universalis IV. We were each given a country in central Europe to control, although a pool of countries were selected for us in order to ensure variety and proximity to each other. Whilst not as dramatic as the March of the Eagles hands-on session, this could probably be down to the fact that this was the first time any of us had gone hands-on with the code (conversely, many of us had access to preview builds of MotE before the event), and the EU IV hands-on session actually came first, so there was none of the anticipation. BT: I feel bad for Gearbox Software. First they fail to salvage the infamous vaporware that is Duke Nukem Forever after 15 years in development.
