News:: Creature collection adventure Temtem shows promise

I've dreamed of a shared-world Pokémon game since I was a kid, and even now, the shelved thought resurfaces every time Nintendo shows off a new installment. Maybe one day Game Freak will get there. I can only hope. In the more immediate future, Madrid-based studio Crema has announced its take on the idea with Temtem, an upcoming "massively multiplayer creature collection adventure."

Today's video is just a tease leading up to a reveal next month, but I'm listening.

"Catch every Temtem, battle other trainers, customize your house, join a friend's adventure, or explore the online living-world," reads the summary.

While the name Crema might not immediately ring any bells, the team's last project, Immortal Redneck, turned out well. As Chris said in his review, "anyone looking to temporarily transport themselves back through the ages of FPS-dom without making concessions should give it a chance."

Crema plans to run Temtem through Kickstarter on May 29. I'm cautiously optimistic.

News:: Why I still love Final Fantasy XIII

[I am of the opinion that Final Fantasy XIII is a puddle of wet farts...but that doesn't mean you still can't morbidly enjoy wet farts! LaTerry's line below, "I love it so much," is such a bold and amazing statement on how you can really, truly enjoy something despite its faults. And if you can't find the good even in the admittedly rather bad, then you're really going to miss out on some hidden gems. Save your vitriol of the game for another article - just enjoy the jank with us. - Wes]

Before we start, it is important that I admit that Final Fantasy XIII is a bad game. It's a little bit terrible. It has so many problems. Final Fantasy XIII is what Torchman thinks about your waifu. Squeenix made so many poor decisions when making this.

I love it so much.

News:: Sonic and Tails team up in new Sonic Mania Adventures cartoon

Leading up to this summer's Sonic Mania Plus, Sega and writer/director Tyson Hesse have launched a free web-based animated series called Sonic Mania Adventures. The first of five planned episodes made a good impression, utilizing expressive animations and classic game sound effects to deliver Looney Tunes-style hijinks. Part two went up today. As before, I'm really fond of the dialogue-less approach.

The second episode is a bit more straightforward, with Sonic, Tails, and Eggman getting into a tussle that plays out pretty much like you'd expect. Still, it's cute and well-made. I dig these.

News:: Fortnite needs to obliterate Tilted Towers tomorrow

I've never been so invested in something I'm so detached from. Fortnite will begin its fourth season tomorrow, which means that Epic will implement some changes. One of those long-rumored revisions is that Tilted Towers is gonna get blown the fuck up.

This needs to happen. I have played exactly zero Fortnite battle royale matches. Still, through internet-complainers, I know what Tilted Towers is. It's a high-activity, high-reward area that's almost smack dab in the middle of the map. A lot of people jump there. A lot of people die there.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. PUBG, Fortnite's closest competitor, has its analogs in Hacienda, School, and the Military Base. People flock to the best loot, even if that means a realistic chance that they'll be quickly killed. But, the times they come out of those skirmishes alive, they're almost always set up nicely to reach the endgame. It's a viable-but-risky way to play battle royales.

Where Tilted Towers differentiates itself is in the sheer number who jump there every game. It's enough that it can throw off the pacing of the rest of the match. There's a distribution of players that's overly-concentrated on one location, which has the effect of making other areas feel underpopulated. It's literally divisive.

It's figuratively divisive too, though. There's no shortage of social media diatribes exclaiming a loathing of Tilted Towers. But, everyone who jumps there is implicitly endorsing it. Can developer Epic placate both groups? How's it going to be addressed?

For weeks, Epic has teased an in-game catastrophe by adding meteor showers. Players were perplexed by this atmospheric change. Since then, they've become more and more intense. In recent days, those space rocks have hit structures and caused actual damage. Epic's Season 4 promotion has the caption "Brace for Impact!"

The prevalent theory is -- assuming Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck don't save the day -- these meteors are going to level Tilted Towers. Epic will acquiesce to the player complaints. They must. How often are changes to multiplayer games justified through in-game events? Never. The developer simply releases patch notes that say "A new town was added to the northeast corner of the map" and then it is so.

Epic has built a month's worth of speculation out of some increasingly-dramatic meteors. The physical landscape of Fortnite's island will almost certainly look different tomorrow. When it does, Tilted Towers has got to go. That's partially because it'll probably make Fortnite a better-balanced game. But, it's more because this whole meteor tease is too cool of a notion for it to not result in drastic changes.

News:: This cool little Legend of Zelda Rupee light is out today

While most special editions force people to pick up a gargantuan ordeal of a package to get the one goodie you want inside, Nintendo is doing something slightly different for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. It's promoting a new Green Rupee Light either as part of a combo deal for Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition (Switch), set to debut later in May, or as a piecemeal item.

If you're opting to go with the latter strategy the light is out today, which includes both UK and US retailers. As far as the US goes GameStop still has them available, possibly in-store, as of today -- they're $15 each and you can get a quick look at one in the gallery below.

I'm not sure I'm jazzed to play through Hyrule Warriors a third time all the way through (I'm talking leveling up characters and such), but getting a trinket separately is something I can get down with.

News:: Idol Manager is heading to Switch next year after successful Kickstarter campaign

Back in March, Idol Manager made its debut on Kickstarter looking to raise $5,000 by April 26, 2018. As of today, however, the campaign has gone above and beyond that goal, raising a total of $55,332. Notably, it met the stretch goal of a Nintendo Switch version on the final day of crowdfunding.

That said, the developers have confirmed the Switch version will be created after the original PC version has been completed, simply so it won't slow down development. The PC version will be aiming for a December 2018 release window on Windows, Mac, and Linux, while the Switch version will release sometime in 2019.

News:: Video games and all that jazz

Happy International Jazz Day, everyone! And I sure hope it’s happy for you, because there are few types of music as good at making people happy as jazz can. Jazz has a wonderful upbeat quality, favoring major tones and creative freestyling. It invokes freedom, enthusiasm, unpredictability, and liveliness.

So much about this genre creates a similar feel-good spirit as the games we play. It's only fitting that the past couple of gaming generations have been increasingly kind towards jazz, rising to a crescendo of style in 2017. And what better day than today to reflect upon and appreciate the games that did the most to put jazz in the spotlight?

News:: Atari VCS pre-orders will go live May 30 on Indiegogo

The announcement of the Atari VCS was pretty exciting. Here was a seemingly dead company coming back from the grave to re-release its most successful console in 2018. While no one knew if this was simply a modern take on classic hardware, the idea of a new Atari console was just crazy enough to work.

The only thing missing was a release date, or even a price point. Thankfully, Atari has cleared up those last two bits. Just announced today, pre-orders for the VCS will be going live on Indiegogo starting May 30 to the tune of $199. There will be the classic wood grain aesthetic alongside an onyx variant with bundles including both the new controller and that 2600 inspired one. If you sign-up for reminders before May 24, you'll receive some bonus incentives during the pre-order phase.

Atari has also spilled the beans on the tech specs. AMD partnered with Atari to provide a Radeon graphics chip with support for 4K, HDR and 60 FPS playback. There are also other fancy tech things like dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB 3.0. There isn't a mention of what kind of storage space the device will have, but 100 classic games will come built-in to the console.

Some of the games mentioned include Asteroids, Breakout, Missle Command, Yar's Revenge and Gravitar. The press release also makes mention of "a full range of modern titles," which makes me think the VCS is going to be more an Android device than simply an all-in-one retro console. If that is the case, maybe Atari will be correct in its claim of changing the way we use TVs.

News:: Kirby Star Allies developer opens up about the new approach to the world map

I'm happy to see that the reception for Kirby Star Allies has been mostly positive, as it's a great return to console form after such a long hiatus for the series.

Although it didn't monumentally shake up the franchise (it is Kirby after all) it did have a few subtle changes, most notably the larger world map. Speaking to fans by way of the official Nintendo Switch onboard news channel, sequence director Tatsuya Kamiyama explains why they decided on that approach.

Kamiyama states: "A major factor in this decision was the higher resolution on Nintendo Switch, which gave us a wider range of expression and made it easier to show more of the surroundings. Higher resolution meant we could display Kirby better at smaller sizes, so we had lots of space to broaden the scope of the map. With a wider scope, you can see more locations on the screen, meaning that the player won’t get lost, even given free movement."

Explaining further, Kamiyama notes that they tried to make it so the world map had a bigger scale -- "The first time Kirby leaves Planet Popstar I want it to feel like he’s heading out a journey to a wonderful new world.”

When I said it was subtle I wasn't kidding, as a lot of these deliberate choices are easy to miss as you're moving quickly from world to world, but it's nice to hear the justification straight from the designers.

News:: The Xbox Duke controller is officially back

Enough people wanted to see a return of the original Xbox's massive "Duke" controller that the dream has become reality. Xbox designer Seamus Blackley and Hyperkin teamed up to make a new Duke for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, and that product -- the Hyperkin Duke -- is available starting today.

Besides an animated Xbox button, you're also getting bumpers and a 9 ft. detachable USB cable. The Duke will be available at stores like GameStop ($69.99), Funstock (£69.99), and EB Games ($89.99 CAD).

"It's a bizarre experience, to see a joke on Twitter become a real product," said Blackley.

News:: The Call of Juarez series has a new publisher through Techland

Back in March, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger was delisted from the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store and Steam. However, the game has now suddenly returned to the Steam storefront, with a 33% discount to boot.

It would appear this sudden departure and reappearance of the game was due to the rights of the series being acquired by the game's developer, Techland, from its former publisher, Ubisoft. In a press release, Techland Publishing CPO Adam Lason had this to say:

News:: What a Shocker! No, really, it's Shocker in Spider-Man

Shocker is no stranger to Spider-Man video games. Here's a list of every game he has appeared in, often as a low-level early boss. It's not surprising that he'll also be in Insomniac's upcoming Spider-Man.

This morning, Insomniac gave us our first look at Shocker. Judging by the money raining down around him, he's probably robbing a bank semi-inefficiently.

News:: What the hell is Bandai Namco's 'Battle Breeders'?

This weekend, Bandai Namco Japan announced that they have filed a trademark for Battle Breeders. And that's that. No hints, platforms, dates. Just "Battle Breeders".

At face value, it sounds like some form of monster-raising/combat title, so perhaps it's a subtitle for a new Digimon adventure. Alternately, maybe it's a new IP altogether. It wouldn't be surprising to see more monster-capturing games on the horizon, given the incredible success of Capcom's Monster Hunter: World. Perhaps they just wanted the name, but have no plans for it as of yet.

The worst take, which is my own, is to look at the title literally. It's the popular battle royale concept taken to a whole new level, with 100 players gathering together for an en masse baby-making party. Ehhh, that's kinda unlikely, I guess. But it's as good an idea as yours.

News:: Remedy's next game will reportedly be revealed at E3

It's nearly May, and that means the E3 Speculation Machine (patent pending) is running on all cylinders. The less we know for sure, the more anything is technically possible. There's enthusiasm and bright-eyed hope in being left in the dark.

The latest rumor concerns a studio we haven't heard much from since 2016. According to PCGamesN, Remedy's next title will be unveiled at E3. However, PCGamesN doesn't explicitly state where this revelation comes from. The way it's worded makes it seem as if it came from an E3 appointment invitation. It's possible that publisher 505 Games' European PR team was quicker with invitations than the North American PR team.

Despite not really knowing where this report comes from, it's likely that Remedy's next project (currently codenamed P7) will actually be at E3. Remedy has already told investors that it's targeting a 2019 launch for P7. The timeline makes sense in that a one-year marketing and media campaign seems appropriate.

Apart from the release window, we know relative little about P7. Remedy has already said that this will be a new property, so, barring any misdirection, this won't be a full-fledged Alan Wake sequel. Also, it's being developed for "a wider range of platforms," which probably means PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The rest, including the actual title, is a mystery. But, Remedy creative director Sam Lake gave a presentation at the Digital Dragons convention last year that dissected all of the developer's games; most everything that Remedy has done since 2001 has been a character-centric action game with themes of guilt and broken family.

We've contacted 505 Games for confirmation of this Remedy reveal, but didn't receive an immediate response. We'll update this article when/if we hear back.

News:: Magic: The Gathering Arena closed beta impressions

Magic: The Gathering means a lot of different things to different people. For some, it's a highly competitive game where the meta has to be followed and the sideboard is always ready. For others, it's a casual kitchen table game to play when friends are over. Some just use it like a stock market, speculating with card value and complaining when card reprints drive prices down.

For me, the game's associated with a lot of high school memories. My friends and I decided to buy an (awful) intro pack each. Despite a pact to never buy boosters to avoid being overpowered, we all succumbed to the temptation in time. Eventually, we went to Friday Night Magic and prerelease and everything... Until adulthood came along and we had stuff like responsibilities and living in different cities getting in the way. Years pass, and now I couldn't even remember my DCI code to sign up for this closed beta! Thank goodness Destructoid is here to bail me out.

Just as there are so many different ways to enjoy Magic: The Gathering, there are also many angles to consider with its newest digital adaptation. As such, I'll take a page straight out of Dominaria's Sagas and split my impressions of the closed beta into three parts.

News:: You can nab Mini Ninjas for free on PC with some convoluted steps

Square Enix has a brand new website for you to peruse. To commemorate the occasion, the publisher is handing out its "popular" game Mini Ninjas on PC. The only caveat is that you'll need to jump through a crazy amount of hoops to actually download the thing. In typical Square Enix fashion, everything is convoluted with some padded out steps to getting your free game.

Essentially, you'll need to sign up for a Square Enix account, add the game to your cart as normal, enter a discount coupon code (MiniNinjas, which is case sensitive), finish the checkout process and then download the game from your "MY ORDERS" page. So much easier than just putting up a download link for a day. This offer is valid from today until May 15 at 11:59 pm PDT while supplies last and is only available for North and South America.

News:: Sony releases another sound and video comparison for Dragon's Crown Pro

Dragon's Crown Pro, the PS4 port of the original Dragon's Crown, is nearly here, set to launch in the west on May 15. In case you haven't been keeping tabs on it the idea is that it'll not only interface with old versions, but upgrade the original with new 4K visuals and an enhanced soundtrack.

Although we've gotten plenty of chances to see the former enhancement in action the latter has been a  bit more elusive -- until today that is. Sony and Atlus just released two quick 20 second comparison tracks that help you get a better idea of how much effort went into the new soundtrack.

According to Atlus, the Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtrack has been re-recorded with a live orchestra -- and if for some reason you want to listen to the old one you can swap it back. Listen to both the original and redone tracks here on the official PlayStation Blog post.

News:: Psyvariar Delta is headed West on PS4 and Switch this Summer

Dispatch Games have announced that the frantic RE-revamped edition of Success Corporation's arcade shooter, Psyvariar, is headed West on PS4 and Nintendo Switch this Summer.

Psyvariar Delta is the latest iteration of the frenzied game, which attempts to put some meat on the original by way of new features including an XP system, tracked statistics and various new modes and options. These will include a Score Attack and Practice mode, a remixed soundtrack and downloadable new fighters as well as all the features from the previous release Psyvariar: Revision.

Of course, despite all these new additions and tweaks, the intense, bullet-dodging gameplay remains intact. Players will battle against wave after wave of enemies and bosses, creating a colourful and amazing visual experience, even if it does encourage heart palpitations.

Psyvariar Delta launches in Japan on PS4 and Nintendo Switch August 30, and is expected to land in the West very soon thereafter, available in both digital and physical form.

News:: Stardew Valley works great in co-op and you can test it out right now on Steam

I've spent a few hours with Stardew Valley's online co-op mode and, just like that, I'm one-hundred percent back into the farmer life. I can't stress how weird and wonderful it is to see another player running around Pelican Town after you've spent dozens upon dozens of hours playing alone. It's an altogether different vibe, and your daily chores sure go by a lot quicker with extra helping hands.

Stardew Valley is currently holding a co-op beta on Steam. Here's how you can play:

To enable the beta in Steam, right click the game in your library and select properties. On the window that pops up there will be a 'betas' tab. In the text box, type the password for the branch: jumpingjunimos. Then click the 'Check Code' button.

If you've done that correctly, you will now be able to select the 'beta' option from the drop down box. Once you've done that, Steam will start downloading the update.

In co-op, up to four people can team up, each of which will get their own cabin adjacent to the host player's home. The farm itself, money, and world events are shared, but everyone will have their own skills, relationships, and inventories. So if someone clears a bunch of floors in the mines or builds a bridge, you'll all benefit, but you have to upgrade your tools individually. Time no longer pauses inside of menus, and you also can't go to sleep and turn over to the next day until everyone's in bed.

This developer blog post covers the nitty gritty, with instructions on how to back up your save files (this is still a beta, after all) and how to report bugs. A few other important notes: you can scale the profit margin on sellable items so that you don't get rich too quick, players can marry each other, and there's a text-based chat system complete with hundreds of adorable pixel-art emoticons.

The beta build also has some new single-player features, including hats for your horse, a Winter Market Festival, and new character events and cutscenes. I haven't seen this stuff yet (Ray and I started a new save file for co-op and only just got our first chickens), but I'm sure word will get out soon enough.

News:: Here's a quick look at the new storyline coming to Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard is trying something new with Heroes of the Storm. The game has a few years under its belt and much of the lore as it pertains to its combatants is established, bu the time has come to start to explore more of the Nexus -- one of the only original creations from the mega-publisher outside of Overwatch in many years.

To kick all that off Blizzard is launching the "Rise of the Raven Lord" comic, which is a sort of precursor to a big new event called the Dark Nexus. Alongside of the Grave Keeper the Raven Lord is one of the chief deities of the Heroes of the Storm universe, and a short narrative penned by Valerie Watrous helps set the stage for the story to come in a very MCU sort of way.

You can check out a quick preview of the comic below -- Blizzard will divulge more info on the event later today. It all seems like baby steps so far, but if Blizzard can keep people reeled in I'm interested in seeing where this goes over time.

News:: 'PUBG' hackers arrested and fined in China for selling game cheats

Combatting hacking and cheating in online games has taken a serious turn for PlayerUknown's Battlegrounds developer Bluehole/PubgCorp. News:: Mighty Gunvolt Burst just added the protagonist from the first Gal Gun

Inti Creates has been steadily supporting Mighty Gunvolt Burst, the follow-up to their original Mighty Gunvolt experiment, and it's been working out nicely for them. Free updates have added plenty of quality of life upgrades to the game for sure, but the various bits of DLC really changed the game for the better, especially given how differently some of them play.

This week Tenzou is now a part of Burst -- the now-named protagonist of the Gal Gun series. Oddly enough Inti Creates have found a way to make Gal Gun cute, and now have Tenzou running around with the previously included Ekoro the angel.

Other small changes include an increase to 40 total save slots, buffs for Gunvolt and Copen, and various bug fixes.

News:: Nintendo Labo busts straight into the Top Three of the UK Charts

Nintendo's cardboard creativity project, Labo, launched this week and had a pretty good opening run. The Toy-Con Variety Kit landed straight in at the number three spot of the UK charts, while the Robot Kit debuted at number twenty. It wasn't enough to dethrone Sony's mighty God of War, however, which ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

At first glance, Labo has been successful, but not a smash, with news outlets reporting only around 30% of its shipped units sold in its native Japan. However this is a marathon, not a sprint, as Labo as a concept is both an expensive product and a long-haul idea, rather than a new release that needs to go platinum in week one, lest its gets abandoned by the publisher.

Elsewhere in the charts, murder-fest Far Cry 5 held on to its number two position, while Yakuza 6: The Song of Life peaked hard, going from number three to number thirty-nine in one week. The Switch edition of South Park: The Fractured But Whole debuted just inside the Top Twenty at number nineteen.

News:: Lillie, one of the best things to come out of Pokemon Sun and Moon, is getting a figure soon

Good Smile Company does right by a lot of characters when it comes to its figure renditions, and this upcoming Figma is no exception. Next they're tackling Lillie from Pokemon Sun and Moon and her many moods, as well as accessories that include the fabled Pokemon Flutes, Poke Balls, and a Poke Doll.

Strangely there's also an exclusive hand dryer (if you go through Good Smile directly) or a hair brush (if you order through Pokemon Center Online). Now you too can tell Nebby to get in the damn bag and stuff it into the container if your choice.

A price hasn't been confirmed yet but the figure is set to ship around November of this year.

News:: Nintendo release footage of Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion in action

This Summer, Nintendo launch a huge expansion for their popular arena-shooter Splatoon 2. Alongside a slew of new gear, music, maps and the like, the colourful title will receive a single player story mode of sorts, which Nintendo have previewed in a new video.

It's pretty short, to be fair, but we at least get an idea of what the single-player content will entail, as players guide the amnesiac Agent 8 through a hazardous environment, helped out by her pal Cap'n Cuttlefish, and music superstars Off the Hook.

Players will be able to take Agent 8 on 80 new missions, with the grand prize being the ability to play as an Octoling in the game's multiplayer. Splatoon 2 is going through something of a transformative process at the moment, having already received changes last week as part of the game's Version 3.0 update, it certainly looks like Nintendo have a lot of faith in the game and its future.
