Good News: Online Games Are Getting Less Obnoxious

Don't play games online, they say. If you have to play games online, turn off chat. If you have to turn on chat, limit it to your friends list. In the past, if you've wanted to avoid the toxic jerks of online gaming, those have been your guidelines. It feels like that's finally changing.

News::Final Fantasy Agito characters hit Rise of Mana in this crossover event

Final Fantasy Agito , the smartphone game that shares the same setting and characters as Final Fantasy Type-0 , will have a crossover with Rise of Mana . Players of Rise of Mana will be able to fight Final Fantasy staples such as Tonberries, Cactuar, and moogles. Also, Kurasame from Final Fantasy Type-0 will be able to join your Mana group as an ally.

Expect all this and more if you live in Japan, with the crossover starting on July 31 and ending August 7.

If you do not happen to live in Japan, that's too bad. But hey, you still have the Final Fantasy Type-0 HD remake hitting western shores sometime in the next year or so. And that's something worth celebrating.

News::Virtual View Productions Developing 2 VR Titles for 'VR Lounges'

VRFocus - While many think of the Oculus Rift and other virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) as strictly in-home products, some companies are looking to use the technology beyond the home in arcade-like outlets. One such company is Aurora Gaming, which has this week announced an agreement with Virtual View Productions that will see the latter develop two new VR videogames for release in VR lounges across Dubai next year.

News::Digital Devil Saga novels coming to the U.S., so read 'em if you refuse to play the series

A series of books based on the Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga series is being published in the U.S. by Bento Books. There are five books in total which are authored by Yu Godai.

The first book is titled Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner . It will release in hardcover for $24.99, trade paperback for $14.99, and in eBook format for the Kindle at $9.99.

The book has been translated by Kevin Frane and there is a sample of the first chapter available here for free, if you're curious. You can also check out an interview with Kevin here. I can say I've been leafing through an advance copy of the first book, and I recommend picking it up if you're a hardcore MegaTen fan like me.

News::Crypt of the Necrodancer Is the Hero Roguelikes Need

GeekParty writes: "Crypt of the Necrodancer is amazing. The alpha is addictive. The concept is novel. The execution is impressive. I could go on for twelve pages about this game, but allow me to tell you why Crypt of the Necrodancer is the roguelike to watch in just a few bullet points."

News::Man, I wish I were playing Crypt of the NecroDancer right now

Are you playing Crypt of the NecroDancer ? You should be playing Crypt of the NecroDancer.

It's a rhythm-based roguelike in which you hop around dungeons to the beat of music, a novel mechanic that ends up being enjoyable -- not burdensome, as it might appear in trailers -- and keeps the game feeling action-oriented despite the Rogue influences.

And the soundtrack? Quite possibly my favorite music from Danny Baranowsky to date (though you can play NecroDancer to your own music too -- Daft Punk's "Face to Face" works well).

I'll openly admit that I wasn't totally sold on the game's concept before playing, but the execution is there. Whether you want to get in now while Crypt of the NecroDancer is still in Steam Early Access ($14.99; Windows/Mac/Linux) is up to you. Personally, I tend to avoid unfinished games wherever possible, but I feel this is far enough along in development to justify playing now.

It's all-around terrific. Also, that singing shopkeeper!

News::Final reminder: It's the last day to get your free Wii U game with Mario Kart 8

If you ordered Mario Kart 8 and somehow neglected to register your copy for one of the free Wii U games Nintendo is giving out, this is the final day to do so.

Just redeem the code printed on the insert using Club Nintendo, or link your Club Nintendo account to your Wii U before buying Mario Kart 8 if you're getting the title digitally.

The choices are, again, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Wii Party U in North America. Europe is offering those, plus Game & Wario, Sonic Lost World, Nintendo Land, The Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. (What'd you get, by the way?)

Most of you who were going to register Mario Kart 8 probably did so already, so here's a potentially more useful nudge: don't forget to check your status in the Deluxe Digital Promotion if you're a Wii U Deluxe Set owner. You might just have a $5 eShop code in there.
