News:: Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in construction for PS4 and Switch

Here I was just lamenting the need for more Dragon Quest in my life and who should come to my rescue but the only company capable of doing so with this particular property. During a live stream, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in the works for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The sequel will add cooperative play, gliding mechanics and the ability to swim underwater.

The live steam is still going on as I type this up and I've embedded it below. You can catch the DQB2 footage around an hour and 10 minutes into it. I will update this story with more proper footage once it becomes available.

News:: Science and henshin heroes collide in Kamen Rider City Wars

Whenever evil raises its ugly head, a hero will rise up to kick them in the face. To an extent, this is the Kamen Rider franchise's main premise. As the next show, Kamen Rider Build, prepares for its debut in Japan, its star is joining forces with his predecessors in Kamen Rider City Wars, the series' upcoming game for iOS and Android.

At the moment, we only know about the title focusing on the Riders protecting a city from danger. There's also a registration campaign where people can earn Hero Stones and a card of Kamen Rider Den-O Sword Form's Rider Kick when the participant count reaches a certain number. While it sounds like a generous offer, I found it weird for them to not give players the main hero from the 2007 series about trains and time travel.

Most importantly, City Wars won't force people to risk their lives in the real world while they face actual monsters. This makes Bandai Namco a nicer company than Kamen Rider Ex-Aid's Gemn Corporation.

With cards being one of the title's features, I'm curious to see how they'll incorporate Build's science-themed abilities in the final product. Also, my desire to play a new All Kamen Rider beat 'em up game for Switch and/or 3DS has gone up.

News:: Dragon Quest X logs off the Wii, and onto the Switch, this November

I got into the Dragon Quest series far later than I should have. If was the Wii/DS era and the first game that did it for me was Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. It's a game I still consider one of the 10 best I've played. After that sunk its hooks into me, I had to try out every Dragon Quest game imaginable. And I did. Through the DS, Wii and 3DS generations, I purchased every game that bore its name.

Unfortunately, there are DQ games I may never be able to play, either because Square Enix didn't bother to localize them, they're trapped on a region-locked console, or because the text is so important to the experience there is no way I could enjoy myself without being able to understand what is happening.

Dragon Quest X, the MMO entry in the series, is one of those games. In the past, it's been trapped on region-locked consoles, as well as Windows, but on November 16 it comes to the very much region-unlocked Nintendo Switch with version 4.0.

News:: Random-ass thoughts about controllers

[Mr. Bradshaw takes us back in time to the distant past, before the Nintendo Switch released, in order to compare the pros and cons of the modern controller design. The year was 2016 and there were three major consoles locked in an eternal war for our affections/money. One of them got the affections, one got mostly ignored, and the other had an extremely annoying light bar...

P.S. We've decided to start resurrecting some older blogs that may have gotten overlooked the first time around under the tag Who Let The Blogs Out! If you come across any potential candidates, feel free to make a nomination by sending an email to tips@destructoid.com - Kevin]

I thank my lucky stars every day that we have video game controllers like we do. No, the perfect controller hasn’t been decided as of yet, but the talent that is out there is really something to behold. I hope you’ll join me for this in-depth look at where we are in the whole controller game.

News:: What's keeping you busy during this slow summer season?

Things have been a little slow on the blogging-about-video-games front, which works out okay now that we've got shows like Red Rocket League and The D-Team up on our new Dtoid Fight YouTube channel, but makes for some scattershot podcast episodes. This latest one runs a gamut of topics; you might just find one you like.

Steven Hansen, Brett Makedonski, and Ray Porreca talked about frozen pizza, the short-lived tenure of The Mooch, and why Steven approves of the use of anabolic steroids. Eventually they got around to talking about one video game, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

As usual, the episode rounds out with some listener questions and an instance of SATPOTPAQ, which focuses on animal knowledge this time. No Hot Dish this week, but next episode should have one!

News:: Breaking down why Breath of the Wild is highly overrated

It's been just over five months since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild opened to a landslide of perfect scores from the media at large. I was beginning to think we as a gaming community had gotten past hyperbole, but many have been quick to declare this the best Legend of Zelda game, the best open world game, and the overall best game of all time.

It's a given that it will win numerous game of the year awards considering the love affair the press has with this game. This has even prompted Nintendo themselves to suggest all Zelda games going forward will be "open-air" like Breath of the Wild. Enough.

News:: Expedition is a tabletop RPG on an NES cartridge

A few months ago, my friends and wife and I got together for a game of old school Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve played every edition to come out since, but there has always been something appealing about the more chaotic, unorganized nature of the early iteration of the game. It feels more raw, less reliant on a strict adherence to a clean, perfected ruleset. It was a blast; I rolled the dice freely on the table for everyone to see, and death was permanent creating a ton of tension you don't normally get while hiding behind a DM screen. The entire party managed to survive the first couple of sessions more or less unscathed, though badly beaten down, but we haven’t had the time to pick up where we left off since. And I have forgotten where I was leading them, being fairly bad at keeping good notes, and what the point of the whole adventure actually was in the first place.

The problem with the tabletop experience, especially when roleplaying, is that you really do need to be consistent. Getting a group together and having a game ready, even if you improvise a lot is generally a lot of work, and my wife and I are pretty busy people. So when I was perusing homebrew NES games and discovered Expedition by Mega Cat Studios, I was stoked.

News:: The Zelda Symphony last night was great, but these costumes stole the show

Last night, as is my yearly tradition, I attended the Zelda Symphony concert. It's my fourth year going and my first not in Southern California. Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco is a choice venue for the show -- much better than the Dolby Theatre I went to last year -- and my seats were some of the best in the house.

Sure, I had to sit next to this wonderful Zelda fan who spent the show crying because she was so happy to be there, but I was also near Matt Hofstad and Danielle Cuellar. These two, pictured above and below, absolutely knocked it out of the park with their Majora's Mask inspired ensemble.

News:: NieR: Automata invades Spelunker World in a cutesy crossover

If you're down for some bizarre crossovers that don't really make sense, then its time you booted up the free-to-play Spelunker World on PS4! From now until August 24, you can get costumes based on NieR: Automata for use as playable characters. You'll be able to don the attire of Emil, 2B, A2 and what looks like another variant of 2B (forgive me, I'm not familiar with NieR).

News:: Review: Namco Museum

Namco really does have quite the selection of classics in its library. That would probably explain why it has released far too many "collections" over the years. This newest one hits the Switch, which already gives it the added benefit of being portable. It can be hard to turn down classics on-the-go, even if you've played them hundreds of times before.

Namco Museum also comes with Pac-Man Vs., a game that originally required the GBA link cable for GameCube. Considering that no one ever used that, this may be the first opportunity for many to play the asynchronous multiplayer title. As for whether or not that makes Museum worth a purchase, well, that depends on how much you like the other included classics.

News:: Respawn CEO: Despite sales stumble, expect more 'Titanfall'

Titanfall 2 has sustained its playerbase and momentum with free DLC every month since its release, but there's no question that the game was a hit that didn't make the impact it should've. In an interview, Respawn's CEO chalked it up to an inconvenient release window, but the long chat revealed the company's plans to expand the franchise, though he wouldn't say anything concrete. Luckily, the franchise's mobile game, Titanfall: Assault, just got a wide release date of August 10th.
