News:: Giant scissors are your controller in this quirky first-person action game

There's this small world inside GDC 2018 called Alt.Ctrl.GDC, where you'll find a booth full of quirky games that incorporate physical objects into their story. With Scissors the that than (the latter part pronounced "da da dan," according to its Japanese developer), you use giant scissors as your controller and as the main weapon inside the actual game. Before we get into the premise of Scissors the that than, you should first know that the physical pair that acts as a controller only has a joystick on the left handle (which you use to move) and a red button on the right one that starts the game.

News:: The 300 Week 11: THIS IS LARA!

Hola, buds, and welcome back to The 300, a recurring feature on my harebrained attempt to see 300 movies in theaters in the year 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and festival films to experience the wide world of cinema in all its forms. Hopefully there’s something here for you to seek out and enjoy as well.

As always, there are three rules for The 300:

  • The movie must be at least 40 minutes long, meeting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ definition of a feature film.
  • I must watch the movie at a movie theater, screening room, or outdoor screening venue.
  • While I can watch movies I’ve seen before 2018, I cannot count repeated viewings of the same film in 2018 multiple times.

I’m back in New York City and the normal routine of seeing a lot of movies. In fact, next week’s installment of The 300 should be pretty big since I’ll be seeing a few films at The Inaugural Dr. Saul and Dorothy Kit Film Noir Festival, which opens tonight and runs through Sunday.

Eight classic works of film noir will screen at the Kit Noir Festival, most of them in 35mm. There will also be a special conversation with writer/director Paul Schrader. If you’re in NYC and love film noir, stop by the Lenfest Center for the Arts and give this a look.

And so, onward.

News:: Hands-on with Oculus Go: Comfy, wireless VR

Oculus Go might be the virtual reality industry's best chance at pushing the medium into the mainstream. Tethered VR devices are unwieldy and generally require a beefy PC rig to run properly; mobile headsets offer a taste of what full, immersive VR has to offer, but they're limited by smartphone specs and battery life. Standalone headsets are the future of VR, and while the Oculus Go isn't the first device in this category, it's an accessible and high-quality option backed by the marketing power of Facebook.

Oculus Go is a $200 headset rumored to hit the market at Facebook's F8 conference in May, but the company is showing it off, for the first time, on the GDC show floor -- and we've already gone hands-on.

News:: Top Fortnite streamer Ninja claims to make $500,000 a month

As streaming continues to be a lucrative endeavor for the crème de la crème at the top of the charts, Fortnite player Ninja has disclosed that he makes $500,000 a month streaming across both YouTube and Twitch.

In an interview with CNBC that I'm sure scared half of the parental population to death in the sense that they now have to fend off their child that thinks they'll go pro, Ninja explains that he's able to make that dough partially due to Amazon/Twitch Prime subscriptions, as well as his constantly growing profile, which includes a recent bout with the Drake.

Although many Fornite players had already heard of him, Drake was the straw that broke the camel's back and thrust Ninja into the limelight of major media outlets like CNBC. At the time of this writing Ninja has 5,352,571 subscribers on YouTube, and 3,882,163 followers on Twitch

News:: Justice League stinks, has the worst B.O. in DCEU history

Surprising no one, with the official end of Justice League's box office run, it stands dead last in the DC Extended Universe tallies. Sad face, JL, sad face. You're over $100M below your nearest competition. Take a look at the global box office numbers:

1. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $873,634,919

2. Wonder Woman – $821,847,012

3. Suicide Squad – $746,846,894

4. Man of Steel – $668,045,518

5. Justice League – $547,924,295

What's surprising is that despite the general audience disdain for these DCEU films -- outside of Wonder Woman, of course -- these films have grossed what they have. These are not box-office flops, by any stretch of the imagination.

The takeaway? If Warner Brothers and DC can embrace creative direction aligned with audience interests, they still have the potential to reap huge financial rewards. Despite what's largely been a progression of underwhelming and disappointing films panned by critics, and only entertained (not loved) by audiences, there's clear demand for a legitimate alternative to the MCU.

Are you still interested in future DC films, or have you given up? Personally, I'm thinking it might be time for Bloodshot (recently cast with Vin Diesel) after all.

News:: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered reportedly won't have multiplayer

Following a recent listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered on Amazon Italy, sources speaking to CharlieIntel and Eurogamer have confirmed the game is in production. A remaster isn't surprising, but there is an unexpected development: it reportedly won't have any multiplayer.

The now-removed retailer listing suggested a $25 price point, a detail that initially seemed suspect but now makes a whole lot of sense if Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is indeed single-player-only. Amazon Italy also pointed to an April 30, 2018 release, for what that's worth.

With Black Ops IIII coming later this year, I can see why Activision wouldn't want the two games going head-to-head. That said, a lack of multiplayer is always going to feel like a big omission for Call of Duty.

News:: Dragon's Crown on PS3 and Vita receives new update ahead of PS4 remake

Last generation's iterations of fantasy RPG-brawler Dragon's Crown are to receive a new update. This patch will not only prepare both the PS3 and PS Vita editions for cross-play with upcoming PS4 remake Dragon's Crown Pro, but they will also retroactively add new features to the game.

Atlus' patch notes features changes across the board. Camera movement has been improved, tutorials have been updated, and more statistical information has been added to the pause screen. Accompanying the various U.I and gameplay tweaks are a number of bug squishes. Basically, everything you need to get your current copy of Dragon's Crown set to ride into battle alongside the upcoming remake. The update goes live March 22.

Dragon's Crown Pro, which is already available on PS4 in Japan is currently scheduled for release in the West on May 15. A "Battle-Hardened" edition is available in the U.S. but sadly there is no sign of the luxurious "Royal Edition" that was available in in Japan.

News:: Over a million people have already played 'Sea of Thieves'

Have you been struggling to play Sea of Thieves since it launched on March 20th? There's a good explanation for it. In a launch update, Rare's Craig Duncan and Joe Neate have revealed that over 1 million unique gamers have played the online pirate adventure in just its first 48 hours. The team had anticipated large demand, but wasn't ready for as many as 5,000 logins per minute -- the servers went down for nearly five hours on launch day as a result.

News:: Review: The Council - Episode 1: The Mad Ones

As soon as I began playing The Council, I was immediately reminded of Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None on the Wii. I doubt others will have this moment in their head, but bear with me. The atmosphere felt incredibly similar as I walked around outside a manor and felt the rumbling of a mystery brewing. The mechanics couldn't be more different, but I was instantly transported back to years ago when I attempted to solve the mystery on that island.

Another striking similarity between the two is that neither is very good...

News:: Sea of Thieves had a million players in its first 48 hours, Rare talks server issues

Despite extensive pre-release testing, Sea of Thieves has had something of a rocky launch this week with players finding themselves unable to connect. The servers have been slammed, and at a certain point Rare opted to temporarily suspend new players from joining the game. Once-amusing error message names like "Lavenderbeard" and "CinnamonBeard" started losing their charm.

Rare spoke about the server issues today in a 10-minute video. In short? Tons of people are playing.

According to the studio, the scale of players at launch is "between three and four times" that of the game's biggest beta test. "I think at one point our service engineers told me we had 5,000 people coming in per minute," explained studio head Craig Duncan. "The other thing is just on a general level of scale, we've actually seen more than a million unique users in a 48-hour period."

Rare has implemented server-side fixes and will continue to do so. In the meantime, the developers suggested a few things to help combat problems during peak hours. If you're a solo player trying to queue up, you might have better luck joining a full crew. And if you're in a game but your quest rewards or Achievements aren't popping, just give them time -- don't quit out and rejoin.

"We do appreciate all the patience, we do appreciate the support. Believe me, it is as frustrating for us as it is for anyone that's experiencing an issue," Duncan said. "We wanna get to an end state where everyone has a good time all the time every time they play."

News:: GTA Online begins its Southern San Andreas Super Sport Series

Grand Theft Auto's online universe continues to run and run, with Shark cards being snapped up weekly, and shed-loads of players still leaping into the carnage-filled cities with little more than mindless chaos and wanton destruction in mind.

But it's not all about grenade-tossing and crashing your speedboat into a golf clubhouse. Some people just like taking to the streets in fast and furious fashion. Right now, those guys 'n' gals are in heaven, as Rockstar have just begun the Southern San Andreas Super Sport Series.

The GTA Online universe has been blessed with the Hotring Circuit, a high-speed race course which will afford up to thirty players the opportunity to burn rubber in a bid to win a selection of cool prizes, which include exclusive vehicles and in-game cash. Players can also attempt to beat the clock with a new Time Trial mode.

It's not all about speed either, as the Tag Assault mode, coming to the track on April 3, will see two players piloting a vehicle and simultaneously shooting down track-side targets. If that isn't enough, there is also a discount offered on Vehicle Upgrades, to get your beat-up jalopy ready for racing.

This is only the beginning, as future events, scheduled to go live in May, will see ten new Special Vehicle Races, seven new Transform Races and two more Adversary modes.

News:: What type of hero do you want to see next in Overwatch?

After its initial launch, Blizzard has gone into overdrive to address the support meta in Overwatch with its add-on cast members. While we started with the offense-minded Sombra, we eventually got Ana, Moira, and Brigitte (on top of Doomfist and Orisa), the three of which are supports.

With Brigitte being so freshly introduced (and not playable in competitive for a bit), it's tough to divine where the meta is going to swing, but that doesn't mean you can't build your own personal wishlist of what you'd want out of the game. Many folks initially speculated for months and added Doomfist to their lists, but after that I haven't seen a collective zestiest sort of "community need."

I'm going for a more lore-based angle here, as I just want more Talon baddies. Moira and her strong connection to characters like Reaper was a nice start, but we currently have an overwhelming amount of "good guys" or those tangentially working on the side of the Overwatch organization, compared to evil characters (even Junkrat and Roadhog, while dastardly in appearance, are more Chaotic Neutral than anything).

It's a weird totally "me" request as I can't think of anything mechanically that I'd want right now (the game is in a pretty good place), but I want to hear your ideas!

Here's a specific breakdown of what's included in the Spring Pack:

ICA Facility

  • 2 story missions
  • 2 Escalation Contracts
  • 40+ Challenges
  • 17 achievements /  Trophies

Sapienza

  • 'World of Tomorrow' story mission
  • 12 Escalation Contracts

News:: Valkyria Chronicles 4 launches in Japan and unveils Season Pass

There's a famous saying that only two things in life are certain: "Death and Taxes". But I'm really starting to think that the idiom needs updating to "Death and Passes".

Sega have revealed a Season Pass for their upcoming strategy warfare game Valkyria Chronicles 4. Buying the Pass enables the player to receive a selection of post-release DLC content, which will take the Federation Army and their battalion of tanks to the sea-side, among other locations.

Four new scenarios will be added to the main campaign: Squad E to the Sea! (March 29), Captainless Squad E (April 5), The Two Valkyrias (April 19), and the amazingly titled Raid Battle Hard EX! (April 12) Several of these scenarios can only be playing after reaching designated points in the main campaign. Completing Squad E to the Sea will also unlock beachwear for Riley, Minerva, Claude, Kai and Raz, perfect for frontline warfare.

It is undeniably unfortunate that all four scenarios have release dates within a month of the game's Japanese launch date, as it reeks of "Cut-out content". However, such matters are sadly no longer a surprise. The Season Pass will be available alongside today's Japanese release, and is priced at ¥4,000, or around $38.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 launches in Japan today on PS4 and Summer on Nintendo Switch. It is scheduled for release in the West on PS4, Xbox One and Switch later in 2018, with a recent rumour pointing to October 16.

News:: THQ Nordic is re-releasing a bunch of Nickelodeon games

THQ Nordic has been steadily reviving games from the expansive THQ catalog, from De Blob to Titan Quest to Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Today, the company announced plans to re-release a bunch of old licensed titles based on Nickelodeon properties. I can already see the SpongeBob memes.

Here's what's on the docket, generally speaking:

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender
  • Back At The Barnyard
  • Catscratch
  • Danny Phantom
  • El Tigre
  • Invader Zim
  • Jimmy Neutron
  • My Life As A Teenage Robot
  • Rocket Power
  • Rocko's Modern Life
  • Rugrats
  • SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Tak and the Power of Juju
  • The Fairly OddParents (US only)
  • The Ren & Stimpy Show
  • The Wild Thornberrys

"It is a perfect fit for our 'asset care' strategy: bringing back fan-favorites, continuing to support legacy games and make them available on current and even next-gen platforms," said Adrienne Lauer, Vice President of Digital Sales & Business Development Americas.

Some of these shows spawned a ton of different titles, so it'll be interesting to see what exactly THQ Nordic chooses to focus on. I don't have any particular nostalgia for these games, but even with the less-than-great adaptations, it's nice to see them preserved on modern platforms.

"On-shelf availability will be announced in the coming months," according to THQ Nordic.

News:: The latest PUBG hack craze involves flying vehicles

Any big game is prone to hacks and exploits, and PUBG has had this growing pain for many moons now. With such a big playerbase cheaters are bound to happen, and development teams employ different strategies, from patching vulnerabilities to suing hackers.

But PUBG is still fairly vulnerable, as evidenced by the recent wave of vehicle manipulation kills. It's not a new concept as the phenomenon happened sparingly to the point where it was chalked up as a glitch months back, but recently all signs point to pure exploit management.

The gist is that you can basically just fly around with a vehicle at rapid speed, allowing you to escape and/or ram into other players to instantly take them out (like the hilarious video below that begins in earnest at 0:30). It's funny to watch, but not so funny when it happens to you in a particularly tense and close game. At least it's better than the aim bots that are currently plaguing PUBG right now.

News:: How Facebook plans to colonize gaming

Facebook is in the middle of a public relations nightmare, caused by reports that research firm Cambridge Analytica used its site to harvest data from 50 million user profiles. But, that's not stopping the company from talking up the potential of its platform, in this case as it pertains to gaming. As part of Facebook's GDC 2018 announcements, it revealed last week that any developer can now make Instant Games, thanks to new tools that let them create HTML5-based web titles for Messenger or the News Feed. Additionally, Facebook has made it easy for devs to build livestreaming features directly into their PC games, without any capture hardware or software required, in what's a clear attempt to challenge the likes of Twitch and Youtube.

News:: Star Wars Battlefront II unlocks all heroes, villains, and their ships

Today's update for Star Wars Battlefront II is the big one. It's the one that overhauls how progression works in multiplayer (gameplay-affecting Star Cards are unlocked through gameplay) and alters loot crates so that they only contain cosmetic items like emotes. But there are some surprises, too.

All of the game's current heroes and villains -- and their individual ships -- have been unlocked. You can save your credits. "With all characters now having a Unit Level, we don't want to limit anyone's chance to progress as we change the way you interact with these characters," the development team said.

There's also another map, Bespin, which "makes its return from the first Star Wars Battlefront as a new location for Blast, Heroes vs. Villains, Arcade, and for a limited time as Jetpack Cargo."

It's a shame EA had to put players through the wringer before we could get to this point. While it's simply going to be too late for some people, I'm happy to see DICE attempt to salvage Battlefront II.

For the patch notes, head over here. There's also an FAQ that's particularly useful for returning players.

News:: CD Projekt RED open new Wroclaw studio to help with Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt RED, the developer/publisher behind the acclaimed Witcher franchise, have opened a new studio in Poland to further development on their ambitious RPG project Cyberpunk 2077.

The new studio, based in Wroclaw, will join forces with the company's existing teams in Warsaw and Krakow to work on the mysterious but highly anticipated title, which was first announced back in 2012. The core of the Wroclaw division's 18-strong team is indie outfit Strange New Things, who themselves are made up of individuals from IO Interactive, Techland and, funnily enough, CD Projekt RED.

"Aside from their immense technological knowledge and artistic flair, the core team of CD Projekt RED Wroclaw are just great people." said Adam Badowski, Cyberpunk 2077's Director "CD Projekt RED is not a typical game developer - we put gamers, creative freedom and quality games above making business. These guys not only share this approach, but, much like the rest of the team, think that this attitude is essential to creating epic video games."

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development for "probable platforms" PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: ARK: Survival Evolved is heading to the Switch

Studio Wildcard has made the announcement today that ARK: Survival Evolved -- the survival game with dinosaurs, dragons, and naked people getting shot by other people with machine guns riding said dinosaurs on the beach -- is making its way to the Nintendo Switch later this fall.

Details are fairly scarce at the moment, but, the developers did confirm the game will offer the same features you'd find on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game. Jeremy Stieglitz, Studio Wildcard's lead designer, had this to say in the press release:

"The Switch's handheld mode provides a fantastic new capability for survivors who want to fully immerse themselves in the vast worlds of ARK. With this new version, Switch players can go directly from hunting and taming while sitting on the couch, to forming online tribes and searching out new conquests when on the bus, waiting in line, or wherever they happen to be."

News:: See Ready Player One early and free

I came away from Ready Player One a bit letdown by the whole thing. The references didn't feel right, and the film's plot was a bit slapdash. However, according to the ol' Rotten Tomatoes, I was in the minority, so maybe you should get a ticket. But why take the risk of spending money on something you might not enjoy when we've got 15 admit-two passes for a screening in Washington DC on Monday, March 26 (full details below).

How are you going to get these passes? Just leave a comment below about that '80s thing that you remember, because I bet we remember it too, and because we both remember it it should be the plot of a movie! That's it. If we get enough comments we should be able to write an entire novel based off of this contest!

Note: These passes do not guarantee you seats, so get there early!

News:: I love Shantae and the Pirate's Curse and now, on Nintendo Switch, you can too

WayForward's delightful platform adventure Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is now available to purchase on the Nintendo Switch eShop, The Switch edition includes an exclusive HD Rumble feature and Super Shantae Nab mini-game.

I've gone on record numerous times stating that Pirate's Curse, the third in the Shantae quadrilogy, is not only the series' best by a country mile, but is one of my favourite vidya gamez of all-time, and I've been playing since eighty-frikkin-five. It features a cast of delightful characters, spouting great, genuinely funny dialogue, and populating a varied world of wondrous design. All backed by an awesome score that perfectly captures the atmosphere of each stage.

Although strictly a platform adventure, the game also features smart puzzles and Metroidvania elements, while throwing the player the occasional curveball just as things start to get familiar. The narrative is great too, as Shantae, having lost her genie powers, must utilise newly-found pirate skills, team up with - gasp - arch-nemesis Risky Boots, and take on the undead Pirate Master.

With a witty script, gorgeous aesthetics and fast-paced, satisfying gameplay, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is easily one of the best platform adventures ever made. It is available now on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Wii-U, Amazon Fire TV and Nintendo 3DS.

News:: Platformer Shadow Bug, coming to Switch soon, is all about speedrunning

The indie scene on Switch is flourishing. In a complete 180 from Nintendo's previous generation I'm constantly seeing indie games released on just PC and Switch, or in some cases, Switch first.

I'm still not used to it! But with the rapid-fire indies from yesterday's "Nindies Showcase" I might be ready for the onslaught now, which also includes Shadow Bug. Released last year on PC to a small but positive reception, Shadow Bug is a platformer with a speedrunning tint, built principally on locomotion.

It's due out next week on Switch and you can check it out below.

News:: Fortnite's goofy 15-minute max Blitz Mode is now live for a limited time

Epic has been following the Riot Games style of limited time game mode implementation, which is basically a take on "always leave them wanting more."

Following the lovely 50v50 mode, Blitz just opened up in Fortnite this week, which will host matches at a maximum of 15 minutes. The reason for this extreme low end game length is because the storm circle (read: the thing that makes the arena smaller and causes death) has a shorter counter, and it'll rapidly force players into sticky situations and firefights. To accommodate for the madness items will spawn more and resources harvested from the map are doubled.

Like 50v50 I'm going to play this as much as possible. It'll be interesting to see how Epic handles different modes going forward -- as I'm sure they don't want to curb or separate their playerbase with tons of different gametypes.

News:: Tobii's EyeCore will make next-gen VR experiences even more immersive

VR and AR may be the next big thing immersive experiences but so far, their user interfaces have been anything but intuitive. News:: Fire Emblem Heroes 'Hares at the Fair' trailer makes bunnies out of brawlers

A new paralogue story is coming to mobile battler Fire Emblem Heroes. The story chapter Hares at the Fair is, in case you haven't guessed, bunny-themed, to tie in with Easter.

Four Fire Emblem characters have also received makeovers in honour of the festivities, with Catria, Sharena, Alfonse and Kagero all receiving lop-ears and carrot paraphernalia. Unfortunately, none of them look as good as when Bugs Bunny used to put on a dress and pretend to be a girl to fool Elmer Fudd.

The trailer below gives you a glimpse of the new chapter, the seasonal character variants and their special powers. The Hares at the Fair event goes live on iOS and Android March 22.

News:: Kirby's Dream Land 2 friends are coming to Kirby Star Allies by way of free DLC

Kirby Star Allies is already getting heat for its price, but if Nintendo keeps adding to it by way of free updates, it could sweeten the deal for some.

Nintendo has announced that Rick, Kine, and Coo, the trio from the Game Boy release Kirby's Dream Land 2 (that are also featured on the cover) are coming to Star Allies as free DLC. They'll arrive alongside of Gooey and Marx, and are going to be incorporated as Dream Friends.

For those of you who haven't played Star Allies yet, the dream mechanic involves an area in which players can recruit cameo-level characters into the fray like Meta Knight, King Dedede, and so on. Keep these coming Nintendo!
