News:: Rock Band 4 is getting some more songs that hardly qualify as rock

I can honestly say that is has been a long time since I've bought anything Rock Band related. The game was practically my life during college and I didn't start to wane in interest until around 2011. Rock Band 3 really did have everything I could have hoped for from the rhythm gaming genre.

Then Rock Band 4 came out and removed some features. Keyboards were out and online multiplayer was long gone. Some of your previously purchased songs were MIA and all new songs would be locked to the newest version. Bummer, but at least the latter is understandable.

If you've been clamoring for more hard rockin' hits...then I'm sorry to disappoint you. Instead of adding some Animals as Leaders, Metallica or Gojira, we're getting songs from the Billboard Top 100 and Weezer's single from the self-titled album that I had no idea came out this year. That is pretty neat.

News:: New Beyond Good & Evil seemingly in 'pre-production'

The prolonged development of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is the ride that just won't end. Fans have eagerly, patiently tracked Ubisoft's follow-up for years, and now here we are, back at square one.

In his latest Instagram tease, designer Michel Ancel shared artwork of a familiar rhino character with the following note: "Endangered species - now saved - Game in pre-production - Stay tuned!"

If that's truly the case, I am curious how the project is looking these days compared to what we think (or at least what we once thought) a new Beyond Good & Evil would be like, to say nothing of any afore-rumored release plans. Shame we can't just hibernate until this game is finished.

News:: Battleborn's new free multiplayer mode is out on October 13

Gearbox's struggling FPS/MOBA needs a shot in the arm to keep its community from extinguishing completely. The first story-based downloadable content (Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion) is set to release on October 13, but if the ol' player-versus-player scene is more to your fancy, then there's something for you too. In addition to the Story Ops, the new competitively multiplayer mode Face Off is dropping for free on the same day.

Face Off takes place on the Capture maps, but instead of holding three zones, teams are pitted against Varelsi spawns in a sort of competitive wave-based survival mode. Each Varelsi killed will drop its mask, and the goal is to deliver masks to a central collector.

In contrast to most Horde Mode-type games, there's also an enemy team to contend with. Encounters with enemy players can lead to death, and death will cause a combatant to drop any Varelsi masks he has. Of course, there's also Battleborn's signature Helix leveling system, so over the course of a 15-minute match, the Varelsi also get more powerful to compensate.

It sounds like a neat twist, and a decent way to make use of the underplayed Capture maps. The fact that it's free may just be enticing enough to get some derelict players back into Battleborn. The real challenge is keeping them longer than a couple weeks after Face Off lands.

News:: Forza Horizon 3 October update brings new cars and a strange PC error

In some weird twist of fate, the PC version of Forza Horizon 3 is requiring a full game download for the latest patch. Either Microsoft made a huge mistake, or we're now into the era of 51 GB updates. Imagine that kind of day-one download.

One Twitter user posted an image of the Windows Store progress bar and it shows the insane patch. NeoGAF also has a thread that has a few other people chiming in and corroborating the claim. Obviously this wasn't supposed to happen.

News:: Microsoft is making rare Achievement unlocks feel more special

There's something to be said for knowing how many other people have earned an in-game accomplishment and where you fall relative to everyone else. I'm always particularly amused to see unlock rates for impossible-to-miss tasks that take place in a game's opening moments. "Uh, did you buy it and literally never get past the start menu? (Actually, wait. I'm sure I've been there before.)"

Per Xbox Live's Larry Hryb, one of the more popular fan-requested features, "Achievement Rarity," is coming to Xbox One this year. Those of you in the Preview program might already be familiar with the new look and sound of a rare Achievement unlocking, such as this one for driving down every road in Forza Horizon 3's Australia, which a mere one percent of players have earned.

News:: Download the Outlast 2 demo while you can

Hold onto your junk! Red Barrels has a limited-time demo up for its first-person horror game Outlast 2. You'll be able to download it until November 1 on Steam, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The game, to quickly recap, puts you in the shoes of an investigative journalist. You're working with your wife to "uncover the stories no one else will dare touch" and have followed a lead to the Arizona desert where there's "a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it." Which, oh. Good.

That cornfield up there brings back terrified memories of a real-life haunted maze I went to a couple of years back. Even as someone who likes to be scared, damn, it was intense. I'm still reeling just thinking about it. Indoor haunts are one thing, but being stranded out in a confusing corn maze with a bunch of costumed teens who take their job very seriously? I don't think I can do it again.

At least with Outlast 2, I can turn the lights back on.

News:: Deal: Rocket League bundle now available with eight DLC packs

Still on the sideline looking to get subbed onto Rocket League? Wait no more as Bundle Stars has started up a week-long sale to give you that extra nudge.

Until next Tuesday, you can pick up Rocket League for a cheap $13.39 or the game with nine DLC packs for only $27.99. While Bundle Stars usually does multiple tiers for its bundle, this one for Rocket League is straightforward: grab the base game or chose the bundle with almost all of the DLC.

  • Rocket League Bundle (Steam) — $13.39 - $27.99
  • $13.39 for Rocket League, $27.99 for Rocket League + 8 DLC packs

The nine DLC packs included are:

  • Aftershock DLC
  • Marauder DLC
  • Esper DLC
  • Masamune DLC
  • Chaos Run DLC Pack
  • Back to the Future Car Pack DLC
  • Revenge of the Battle-Cars DLC Pack
  • Supersonic Fury DLC Pack

"Missing" DLC packs are the Justice League and NBA Pack and two AquaDome-specific cars: the Triton and the Proteus. If you bought the eight add-ons above separately, it would come out to be $22. With the base game at list price, you're looking at a total price of $42. So at $28 for the bundle, this is a 33% savings. Not too shabby.

News:: Puella Magi Madoka Magica is getting a smartphone game

Madoka is one of the best shows I've watched in the last five years or so. What starts off as a standard slice of life/magical girl narrative becomes so much more, and I won't spoil it beyond that.

It's also the kind of series that would translate well to the gaming realm, and although we've had several portable and mobile releases, none of them have made it out of Japan -- maybe this one will be different. It's called Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record, and features new characters and an entire city of magical girls.

The premise sounds good enough to me!

News:: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered will have bots in private matches

Even though it's gated behind a disc and another game entirely, I'm glad Activision (or developer Raven) isn't going into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered half-assed. It'll eventually get every map by way of a free update, and will run at 1080p60.

But fans want to know more, and lead Raven Software designer Amos Hodge heeded the call over the weekend to bring several lingering questions to light. The big one? Bots will be supported in private matches, so even if one day Remastered becomes a coaster of a game with shut down servers, you can still play multiplayer (though that won't happen for a long while, as legacy Call of Duty games are still supported).

Hodge also confirmed that there will be an option to disable the in-game HUD icon for medals (a feature some found annoying), a request that came out of the recent Call of Duty XP event. At this point people are more excited for Remastered than Infinite Warfare, and I can see why -- we already know Call of Duty 4 is good.

News:: When will Nintendo announce the NX?

Pretty much every developer who is interested in working with Nintendo has seen the NX. We have games confirmed for it already, and we've heard that it will feature a cartridge system, and will be a console/portable hybrid with a higher-end processor.

Yet, we still don't really know what it actually is, or if the "NX" will make it in the name at all (Nintendo Xtreme?). Even though Nintendo has said it "won't replace the Wii U" they've basically given up on it, so it seems like they are hedging their bets on the system in a big way. In fact, it may even be the next successor for the 3DS and the Wii U simultaneously. If it manages to incorporate a full mobile system in there with free-to-play games, it could be a pretty big and revolutionary thing.

But I'm getting ahead of myself here. We can speculate all we want, but we don't actually know anything substantial until Nintendo actually reveals the thing. And since some of us are getting restless, feel free to muse on what the NX will entail and when you think they'll pull the curtain back below.
