News:: Heroes of the Storm's Deckard Cain almost had a meteor smash and an ultimate that replicated abilities from Diablo characters

Deckard Cain, the scholarly scribe of the Diablo universe, wasn't one for direct combat. Although his influence over the arcane was a huge part of the lore, and a lot of us were really waiting for his Super Saiyan moment, his role in the series has always been rather subdued; which is one of the most interesting things about him.

I talked with lead hero designer Matt Villers about the difficulties of adapting the iconic character in a MOBA, and what's to come.

News:: State of Decay 2 should really hit the spot

I'm very much looking forward to next month's State of Decay 2, but I know it'll only be a matter of time before the harsh realities of keeping people alive in a zombie-infested sandbox crash down on me. Painful losses are all a part of the experience! That's what I'll say to cheer myself up, anyway.

This gameplay montage out of PAX East covers a lot of ground. If there's one takeaway, it's this: don't dilly-dally at night. It's dark and dangerous and your favorite survivor is just asking to be torn apart.

State of Decay 2 has cross-play support on Xbox One and PC, it's only $30, and if you subscribe to Game Pass, it'll be included with your membership at launch on May 22. Good stuff all around.

News:: Firewatch is bound for Nintendo Switch

Campo Santo's Wyoming wilderness-set adventure Firewatch is coming soon to Nintendo Switch.

"We've been hard at work stripping much of Firewatch's tech down to the studs and rebuilding it to render the world more quickly, to stream and load faster, and to generally be more responsive," wrote Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin. Performance would've been my first concern, so that's excellent.

Switch owners aren't the only ones getting good news. "We expect to bring the low-level optimizations and tech clean-up we're doing for the Switch to all platforms eventually. That means if things go to plan, we'll see performance improvements on PlayStation 4 (and 4 Pro), Xbox One (and One X), Mac and PC."

It's nice that we won't have to wait until In the Valley of Gods to see more from this team.

News:: Steam is giving away Crusader Kings II for free for the next 48 hours

Paradox Development Studio is known for its grand strategy games that have largely the same gameplay but are spread about different eras of human history. Six years ago though it released Crusader Kings II and while you could still move about Europe expanding your empire and spreading your influence like most other grand strategy games, there was an expanded diplomacy and heritage system that perfectly brought in the best elements of the role-playing genre.

Ever since the game released, Paradox has been supporting the game through DLC and expansions that range from small things like unlocking new kingdoms to play as all the way up to the latest expansion which added an unplayable but still influential Chinese kingdom that changed how you played in Eastern Asia. Some people think the DLC plan is bad but for a chunk of Crusader Kings players, it is the only game they play so tossing another 15 bucks to the developers every six months isn't the worst thing in the world for something you love.

News:: World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is out August 14

Blizzard has landed on an August 14, 2018 release for World of Warcraft's seventh expansion, Battle for Azeroth. You can go ahead and mark your calendar (and X out the rest of the month while you're at it).

The company has also detailed the pre-purchasing options for this expansion.

The Standard Edition of Battle for Azeroth ($50) offers a level 110 boost and early access to unlock four Allied Races (the Highmountain tauren, Lightforged draenei, Nightborne, and Void elves). The Digital Deluxe Edition ($70) packs in additional in-game goodies, including a baby Tortollan pet and Gilded Ravasaur and Seabraid Stallion mounts. Finally, the physical Collector's Edition ($100) has a double-sided Horde/Alliance emblem, Elegy & A Good War hardcover book, and digital soundtrack.

Blizzard is also throwing in the most recent expansion, Legion, for pre-purchasers. I may not be into WoW, but I appreciate the heck out of that Orcs & Humans-style artwork up top.

News:: Don't Starve: Nintendo Switch Edition looks like a nice package

Ooh. Don't Starve is coming to Nintendo Switch, and soon!

Klei Entertainment is bringing its tough survival game to the Switch eShop next Thursday, April 12 for $20. While this version won't have Don't Starve Together's co-op functionality (hopefully one day?), it does bundle in the Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked expansions. It won't be short on content.

Good game for a good price. I just wish I were better at it!

News:: LawBreakers developer Boss Key shifting to new project

There's enjoyment to be found in Boss Key Productions' fast-paced multiplayer shooter LawBreakers, but it failed to resonate with a large enough audience. Without players, there is no game. The studio has broken its recent silence with a statement today, one whose message you probably saw coming.

It has been a while since we said anything about LawBreakers. With that, the past four months at Boss Key Productions has been especially trying, as we pride ourselves at being communicative and transparent.

So here is the very real truth, which may not come as a surprise.

The fact is LawBreakers failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner we had originally planned for and anticipated. And while a pivot to free-to-play may seem like easiest change to make, a change of this magnitude takes publishing planning and resources to do it.

The team here has worked hard on this game over the past three and a half years and our studio is determined to give this game the second life it deserves. However, between now and then, we cannot sit idle. We will continue to support the game in its current state, but we also need to focus on other projects with fresh creative leaders. We have been working on something new and we can't wait to share more about it! It's a passion project that we're in complete control of.

Thank you for your ongoing understanding and patience.

LawBreakers could move to a free-to-play model under its publisher Nexon, but at this point, it's hard to imagine even that change being enough to revitalize the game long-term. It's sad, really.

Looking ahead for the studio, the choice of words here is curious: "we also need to focus on other projects with fresh creative leaders." I hope they get another go at it and things work out better.

"I just want to make fun videogames, have since I was 11 years old," said Cliff Bleszinski‏.

Klei's Don't Starve has been a hit ever since it came out for PC in 2013. It's since appeared on the PS4 (as well as the PS3 and Vita), iOS and Android, and continues to thrill with various DLC ("Reign of Giants") and spin-offs (Shipwrecked, Don't Starve Together). News:: Vampyr's story trailer doesn't suck

Vampyr, Dontnod's upcoming action RPG, has avoided the spotlight for most of 2018. After a delay announcement last year, there hasn't been much information about the vampire-themed game, save for its new release date of June 5.

Today, however, Vampyr rears its head once more in the form of an all-new story trailer. It's dark, as expected, and set to a very "video game-y trailer" cover of Don't Fear the Reaper.

News:: New Fighting EX Layer video showcases 'Expert Mode'

Arika's President and CEO, Akira Nishitani, has tweeted a new video featuring a mode coming to upcoming PS4 title Fighting EX Layer, dubbed "Expert Mode."

From the looks of things, Expert Mode is basically what other fighting games would refer to as trials, where players can pick their favourite characters and work through a series of combos, ever-increasing in difficulty. The video features the blue-haired Blair prepping herself to chew bubblegum.

I like the look of Fighting EX Layer. I'm keen to get some quality time with it. But there remains an air of uncertainty about the title, with the publisher splitting the price tag, and being unable to commit to future platform ports and roster additions.

Whereas some fighters can have a really rocky start, such as Street Fighter V, but still have the machine behind them to keep pushing, more niche titles, such as Fighting EX Layer, literally live and die by their early sales. Here's hoping the game delivers when it arrives on PS4 this Summer.

News:: I don't know how to feel about Infinity War

Marvel seems to be on a roll with its cinematic universe. Oh sure, it was always a massively popular franchise that raked in billions, but 2018 is a special year for Marvel. Not only did they have the release of Black Panther, which has become the highest grossing superhero movie domestically of all time, but they're gearing up to release Avengers: Infinity War in a little less than a month. Infinity War is meant to be a massive celebration of the MCU and a culmination of everything that has come before it. To steal a phrase from DC, worlds will live, worlds will die, and nothing will ever be the same.

But here's the funny thing; I'm a bit cautious about Infinity War. Not because of the fact that I don't think it can meet our lofty expectations. So far, everything shown in the trailer has led me to believe that it's going to be grand, impressive, and action-packed. My biggest fear is that it's a sign of the beginning of the end of the MCU and that the MCU is finally going to collapse under its own weight.

News:: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is looking good on Switch despite its price

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is shaping up very nicely if this new footage is any indication. The game already looked fantastic on Wii U, but at this point the Switch's extra power makes it really pop.

Again, we now know that Tropical Freeze will debut for $60 on Switch compared to the Wii U's $50 price. We also know that it loads roughly twice as quickly on Switch, and that it takes up about half of the file size. Finally, there's a new Funky Mode that allows players to utilize Funky Kong in all his glory on top of Donkey, Diddy, Dixie, and Cranky.

Yesterday I half-joked that Nintendo should cut the price before this game launches and I'll keep campaigning for that. But I'll also be the first in line to replay Tropical Freeze as it's one of the best platformers of the past decade -- $10 Switch tax or not.

News:: Samurai Shodown III bursts onto Nintendo Switch today

Courtesy of the fine folk at Hamster, SNK's 1995 release Samurai Shodown III will making it's artery-slashing debut on the Nintendo Switch, with the classic fighter being made available for download today.

Samurai Shodown III was a reboot of sorts for the series, back before everyone used that word in the incorrect context, like I just did. After the amazing Samurai Shodown II, SNK took the series in a gritter, dare I say, "edgier" direction. This was achieved via a slightly more muted colour palette, a revenge-fuelled narrative and the toning down of comical characters.

Many roster veterans returned for this iteration, but each character received an alternate form. These "dark" variants are know as Bursts, and allow characters to perform new moves unavailable in their standard "Slash" form. The lovely Nakoruru even swaps out her hawk pal Mamahaha for wolf sidekick Shikuru.

While not quite the progressive leap from its predecessor that SSII was, Samurai Shodown III is still a very cool game. With this release, all four of the original games are now available on the Nintendo Switch. You can't really go wrong with any of them, though I personally think SSII is the best of the bunch.

Samurai Shodown III is available to download on Nintendo Switch today. It is already available on PS4 and Xbox One.

News:: After the mass bricked Switch situation, Nintendo explains which USB-C cables are safe

After the latest firmware update, Switch owners that use all sorts of third party hardware solutions have been panicking a bit. Reports surfaced that many users were impacted by bricked consoles, and most of the cases seemed to be linked to third party chargers or docks. Nintendo even came out and re-iterated that they don't want anyone using non-sanctioned products.

To further quell that fear Nintendo has provided a landing page that explains what's safe -- and it basically boils down to USB-A to USB-C with 56K OHM resistors. Bottom line? Don't get cheap bargain bin cables and you "should" be okay according to Nintendo. Or you can just opt for USB-C to USB-C to be safe.

Of course, a lot of people are pointing the finger at Nintendo for essentially crafting a quasi-proprietary product. Other pieces of hardware generally don't brick when you use cheaper cables, and folks say this pushes users toward the expensive, still-too-highly priced extra official dock.

News:: Insomniac reveals Spider-Man info including photo mode, frame rate, suit crafting and more

In the wake of yesterday's Spider-Man release reveal, developer Insomniac Games dropped various other nuggets of info across news-sites and twitter regarding the web-slingers upcoming PS4 adventure. There are some character reveals upcoming, so if you want to stay dark on the game, best step aside.

Spider-Man will have an intricate suit-crafting mechanic, which will allow players to give Parker all sorts of different looks, mostly based on his appearance in comics, series and movies since he first showed up, way back in 1962. The game will also have a Photo Mode, naturally, given Parker's role at The Daily Bugle.

In terms of story, the narrative will take place over several weeks. A playable Mary-Jane Watson "is going to surprise a lot of people," Insomniac told Game Informer in their exclusive interview. Villains include Kingpin, Mr. Negative and Shocker. It was also mentioned that one of my personal faves, Black Cat, will be putting in an appearance as part of the game's DLC. Still no sign of Jessica Drew... sigh

New York will be full of side-quests and objective grinds, such as taking photos, stopping street crimes, and taking down Kingpin's outposts. In-game locations include The Avengers Tower and the Wakandan Embassy, but Insomniac are keeping tight-lipped on whether any of the site's respective characters will be showing up in the story.

Regarding hardware, Spider-Man will run at 4K on PS4 Pro and will feature HDR on both versions of Sony's black box. Both consoles will lock the game to 30 FPS. It has also been reiterated that the game will be microtransaction free. No doubt, as the months pass and with E3 just around the corner, we'll learn a lot more about this exciting project.

Spider-Man launches on PS4 September 7.

News:: Heroes of the Storm to add playable Deckard Cain, this is not a drill or a joke

For months folks have been saying that Deckard Cain should make his way into Heroes of the Storm. I even joked about it with a senior developer once upon a time, who noted that while he would be difficult to implement, he could work.

Well Blizzard has implemented everything they've needed to, as this not April Fools Joke character is really real, has his own talent list, and is accompanied by his new look above.

Deckard Cain will play a support role, and is instantly buffed if he's near another allied hero (10 armor, basic abilities recharge 50% faster). He can toss healing potions (Q), the Horadric Cube (W) for damage, and unfurl scrolls of sealing (E) that do damage and root.

I'm sold on the concept, but we'll likely be able to test him out on the PTR soon enough to see if he actually works in action. I love the idea of throwing out five stock healing potions with a 50% faster cooldown (that's a pot every 1.5 seconds) -- it's a decidedly more active support playstyle than a lot of other similar characters.

News:: Start a metal band with LABO Toy-Con Garage guitars

Nintendo have released the third video in their Toy-Con Garage series, showing you some of the fun inventions you can put together with just some cardboard, some imagination and a $300 video games console.

This video shows how you can use the Toy-Con Garage kit to make a guitar. As always, it involves the cause-and-effect mechanics of the software's "node" system, where the user redefines sounds and actions based on movement, infra-red sensors, or button presses. In the video, nodes are instructed to play guitar sounds, then rubber bands are used over the touchscreen to create a "strumming" effect.

From there, users can even program other nodes in order to change pitch and effects. This all leads to a Labo band, complete with guitar, drums and two keyboards. It's the best Nintendo music performance since, well... that one.

True story: In the late '70s, cardboard guitars were an actual craze. Metal-heads would cut guitar shapes out of cardboard, then would actually take them to nightclubs to "fake play" along to music with. In the go-go '80s, we were too lazy to make props, so we just pretended to play with air, hence "air guitar". Less hassle. Just as uncool.

Where was I? Oh yeah, for all the cheese of these videos, I genuinely think Toy-Con Garage is a great concept. With some ingenuity and invention, people are going to come up with some really out-there ideas. I'm looking forward to weird and wonderful YouTube videos when the software launches, April 27, on Nintendo Switch.

News:: Blue Mary making her long-awaited comeback in King of Fighters XIV

Blue Mary, baggy-pants loving bone-breaker, will be making her return to the ring in SNK's King of Fighters XIV next week.

Mary, who originally debuted in Fatal Fury 3 back in 1995, made her first King of Fighters appearance in KoF '97. The petite wrassler closes the distance feet-first via dives and flips, before transitioning to painful joint locks once she hits her mark.

Her KoF XIV iteration is rockin' slightly shorter pants, also she has dropped her classic buckled boots for some ice-white kicks. I'm bit disappointed to see her badass sculpted guns have been somewhat trimmed into my noodle arms, but at least her wrestling skills appear present and correct. All that's missing now is her ever-faithful doge, Anton.

Blue Mary joins Heidern and Najd as a trio of upcoming DLC characters. All three will be made available to purchase on April 12, when SNK drop the Version 3.0 update, which will also contain bug fixes and balance changes for the team-based brawler.

News:: Someone modded Waluigi into Mario Kart 7 and it kind of makes me want to play it again

Honey Queen has it rough. She was riding (flying) high in the Galaxy series, but after he one cameo in Mario Kart 7, she was unceremoniously cut in 8; not even the DLC was gracious enough to bring her back into the fold.

She's even cut in this new mod from PabloMK7, who replaces her with the one and only true Nintendo mascot -- Waluigi. According to PabloMK7 Mario Kart 7 is infamously tough to mod, and after four years folks have finally started to crack the code so to speak.

This mod includes the model and vocal work, and it had to be meticulously built using a new process. It's not available now but will be "soon," presumably in an upcoming video.

News:: 'Spyro Reignited Trilogy' reaches PS4 and Xbox One on September 21st

After years of speculation and more than a little teasing, it's official: the Spyro series is getting a remake. Activision and Toys for Bob have unveiled the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which reworks the first three Insomniac-made games (Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon) for PS4 and Xbox One. Not surprisingly, the graphics get the biggest upgrade. Toys for Bob has "faithfully" mapped the original levels, but with loads of added detail and flourishes that weren't possible on a PlayStation 20 years ago. And then there's the characters -- much like the Crash Bandicoot overhaul, Spyro and company look better than the original box art (not to mention Spyro's fiercer appearance in Skylanders).

News:: New Overwatch comic fills in the Retribution event backstory

Blizzard have released the latest issue of the Overwatch comic. The new story, Retribution, is a short prologue to next week's PvE event, which was revealed yesterday during Stage 3 of the Overwatch League.

In the latest issue Gabriel Reyes, the man who would be Reaper, prepares his Blackwatch team, comprised of himself, McCree, Genji and Moira to prepare for yet another "dirty-hands" mission, the kind Blackwatch were designed for. In this case, the team are preparing to abduct a high-ranking Talon member, known simply as "Antonio".

As always, the latest issue available to read online, free of charge. If you haven't given the Overwatch comic a shot, I'd recommend it. The stories are breezy but interesting, fill in some great lore gaps such as real names, backstories and political leanings, and the artwork isn't too bad either.

You can check out Retribution, and all previous issues, right here. Overwatch's Uprising and Retribution events begin on all platforms April 10.

News:: SXSW Review: Blockers

Prom! That magical experience of near mythical importance for high school students. You'll dance. You'll drink. And then you'll definitely lose your virginity, because only losers haven't after prom has come and gone. The tradition, started with 1999's American Pie, continues nearly 20 years later in Blockers, the cock in the title being implied, or represented in marketing materials with the silhouette of a large chicken.

The game has changed slightly since audiences learned of the forbidden love between man and pastry. Instead of 4 teenage boys making a pact to lose their virginity, it's 3 teenage girls. Oh, and we have a woman directing the major studio release of an R-rated comedy.

As director Kay Cannon said onstage at SXSW 2018, presenting the movie's world premiere, this movie might not have been possible five years ago. It's the right time for the right comedy, one with a female perspective, both from the helmer's point of view, and from a protagonist's. "I'm a woman. And I directed something. It's R-rated and studio released!" Cannon said, clearly elated in the reception to her directorial debut. She should be elated, Blockers is funny. Very funny, Despite it being familiar ground, it's fresh.

News:: Rumor: The developer of The Division is making a battle royale game

Like every industry, the gaming scene moves in waves. It might take a long time to pump out a game but by God, some studios are going to go with what's popular -- and while some genres have withstood the test of time (FPS, platformers), some haven't.

MOBAs are still around, sure, but there's only room for so many active development MOBAs at once, and many, even projects from big studios injecting tons of cash into them, have failed. That's where the battle royale genre, the new cash cow, comes in.

According to Game Reactor, Massive Entertainment of Sweden, the very same developers that worked on The Division and are toiling away at The Division 2, are planning a battle royale game. Based on their alleged inside source, Ubisoft specifically requested their studios to look into a battle royale title in January, and Massive answered the call, saying that they could figure something out in a short amount of time.

Yeah, they could easily be referring to re-using The Division assets for a spinoff Division battle royale.
